HAPPY BURNS NIGHT EVERYONE!
oooh that brings back happy memories of my years in Glasgow...haggis suppers and ceildhis and dancing strip the willow and the gay gordons until I had bloodblisters on
my toes!!!!{smile]

Inzi; the bean bag chair is a childs one similar to this just different material/pattern. at the chemist for being so insensitive ... and I'm sorry your granddad is feeling like hiding away ... my Dad went through a stage like that, I'm afraid we ignored it and invited some of his old friends round to reminise so he was forced to come out of his depressed shell...not saying that it would be the right way to treat your grandad but it worked for us.

WWAJC. With you on the shoe problem..Alex is a 3h, and John Lewis didnt have his size in stock when we went in September, so we went to the shoe shop at the other end of the TC (downstairs near Next), they had the wider ones in (just not in the style I preferred )...Mil went out on Christmas eve to buy him new ones, only to find that his feet hadnt grown (but got 4s anyway so he would get more wear out of them)..we have since been looking at "Jumping Jacks" which used to be sold here in the UK and were particularly soft and wide (and light)..they are only available in the USA now, but we are thinking of paying the import duty to get the width.

Tles; hope a nice flat in the right price range comes up soon.

Off to Mums now for Sunday dinner...should be fun only eating on one side

TheLadyEvenstar · 25/01/2009 19:42

alicet · 25/01/2009 20:24

Needcoffee CONGRATULATIONS!!! yOU CAN DO IT!

Inzi must be really tough to see your grandad struggling so much and not able to go see him... Do you think it might be a good thing to write that letter? xxx

LES glad your flat prob seems to be sorted

We had our burns night last night (thought it was then ) and the 4 of us sat down to haggis neeps and tatties. Wasn't sure what the boys would make of it but they both seemed pretty keen. Sam loved the haggis although adam was more keen on the tatties!

Hello strawberry - glad you had fun at centreparcs!

WWAJC hope you get Anya's feet sorted soon...

Muppet been reading a little of 'how to talk so kids will listen and listen so kids will talk' as Sam has been getting increasiningly willfull - I can see a mini Ollie in the making! Had what sounds very sensible advice (we'll see if it helps) about making everything have a consequence rather than punishment (I remember you saying punishing didn't work?). And also telling them how their actions make you feel. So for example if Sam is messing about in the supermarket, running away and stuff to say something like 'It makes mummy anxious when you run around in the supermarket because I can't see you. You have 2 choices. You can walk but you have to stay where I can see you and stop when asked. Or you can sit in the pushchair' If he then continues to mess about pick him up and put him in the pushchair and say 'I see you chose to sit in the pushchair'. Can't decide if this is just being wooly and not firm enough with discipline but it makes the point that punishments often don't work and end up breeding resentment. We will give this a go (probably aimed at an older child but I think Sam is intellignet enough to get it) and see...

Anyway off to finish cooking tea - see you later xxx

I have been talking to my mum....a woman full of wisdom of children lol having raised 3 of us and also working in the same school for 27 years.

Muppet she says...

Talk to the school they HAVE to cater for Ollie, and if they don't you can take it further. She said as for the tiredness insist your dr refers you to gt ormond street. she did say a whole lot more but would take foreverrrrrrrrr to type it here so will stick it in an email for you if you want.

Inzi, I know how you feel, I had to stop myself swinging at a nurse and a dr when my grandad was ill. And trust me it took all i had not to. Even though Grandad struggled to talk due to the stroke even he found a way to laugh......I will remember that moment always.

Seriously I would go to the pharmacy and ask why they felt they were within their rights to comment on the UNLUCKINESS of an ill man, and ask if they would like to swap places with him for a couple of days.

muppetgirl · 25/01/2009 20:44

Thanks all re Ollie

Alice - we do the choices -if you don't finish your dinner, you won't get the choclate cake. Ollie - I won't have the chocolate cake then...Still we do say well, it's your choice and this does seem to work better than most things. We talk about consequences -he can have telly/starwars game everyday as he's in control of his behaviour but it's his choice and a consequence of his behaviour if he misses out due to not concentrating and not listening. I think I need to work on my reactions as I used to be a clam and colected teacher who wouldn't raise to the bait of any child yet Ollie can make my blood boil in ten seconds! He was awful in that he was up too early this morning and woke us all up but we said he would lose his globe as we couldn't trust him to go back to sleep after he goes to the toilet but we left it there saying that he could earn a pastry if he tried in swimming so we've changed in that the first misdemeanour doesn't write off the entire day. As a consequence we had a better day. We planted the seeds as I remember a Head teacher I worked for saying that once a child had earned something for good behaviour you shouldn't take it away for subsequent bad behaviour so he was good for the 2 days we asked and he got to plant his seeds. We have noticed that being very firm has really helped over the week. We set very firm boundaries and not many of them he had to listen and try at school if he did he could earn 30 mins of telly/starwars game. Globe was taken away from his room as he now goes to bed earlier. He read fantastically to me earlier (not from the crap school books which was, I quote 'I am pushing, I am pulling, I am pushing, I am pulling. I am pushing' Very formulaic and he remembers from the first reading so he doesn't even look at the text when he reads to me after school. We've had 13 non-fiction in a row books all on this line 'I have big red boots, teddy has little red boots, I have a big coat, teddy has a little coat.....aaarrrrrggghhhhh) he is reading the usborne apple tree farm books and really loving them. He had a play bath (dh plays boats and biys stuff) with Hen so it was a really lovely day. I need to have more patience with him but keep to my guns as it were.

Strawberry - WELL DONE YOU!!!!! Are you putting the money you would spend on fags in a pot? My dad did this and you'd be amazed how much you get in a month.

LisaLessLumpy · 25/01/2009 21:11

Blimey you have all been chatty this evening

muppet - glad you have had a better week with Ollie and WooHoo with Henry standing in his cot, he'll be walking before you know it

Inzi - Happy Burns night
about the people in the pharmacy too, some people have no respect nowadays

NeedCoffee - Well done, I am so proud of you keep up the excellent work and I echo what someone said about putting the money from the fags into a pot. Every time you might feel the need to light one up count the pennies that you have saved instead, one, it will keep your hands busy, two it will spur you on seeing how much you have saved.

Not quite the same but I have been doing this with £2 coins, every time I get one in my purse I put it in a money box. I now have enough to buy Sam a really cool bike for his birthday in June without having the expense to pay out in one go. Plus another 5 months to save before then too

LES - WOOHOO so glad you have sorted stuff out and I am glad you seem to have a decent landlord after all

Sorry if i have missed anything else important, I am not ignoring you, just can't remember it all

I still have my cold, I still can't breathe through my nose and now I have a tickly cough to contend with too, so that's at least another three nights without a good sleep . Ben was awake crying at 11.30 on the dot again last night not sure why he keeps waking up at that time, but at least he then slept till 8am. Sam on the other hand was awake at 6.15 on the dot again but dh got up with them both this morning and sorted them out with brekkie and I had a lie in till 9am.

alicet · 25/01/2009 22:04

Lisa sorry you are still feeling rough x

Muppet sounds like you are doing a good job with Ollie - actually has always sounded like that!

Inzi it's good of you to respect the feelings of your mum and rest of your family about the letter to your granddad. However i think you have to think about what you need to do. Floria will be better here but I remember her saying how much she regrets respecting her mum's wish to not tell her dad what he meant before he passed away. If you feel you need to tell him how you feel before the unthinkable happens then I personally think you should send the letter. I think the only reason not to is if you think your grandad would not want to hear this - not whether your gran and mum think he doesn't. I wonder what others think though?

Good Morning All...dont mean to interrupt the conversation but if you or anyone you know needs a twin strollercheck this one out I've never seen one so adaptable, comfy looking and compact!!!(Do you think a pram like that is a good enough reason to have another baby???)
and everyone else, if you want to window shop and boggle at inflated prices have a look at their main site adorabletots.co.uk ... you need a second mortgage for those playhouses!! (but if I win the lottery I want the pirate ship for Alex!!!!...and the garden to put it in!!!!)

muppetgirl · 26/01/2009 11:24

Hi all -Floria that pram/buggy looks very fab, have sent link to dh but not sure we can justify the price but it's great!

Alice - I think I'm coing across as 'I've done that!' when people give me advice and I really don't mean to sound so defensive xxx I think I'm being a pfb about him and maybe I need to relax a little more...?

tumble tots was interesting...

£4.80, we got in ther at 9.45 and sang songs till 10 then played for 10-15 mins with the equipment, Hen fell over and banged his lip so had to cuddle and console for 5 mins, by the time we went back to the equipment they were putting it away for the next session and we then sat down at 10.20 for 5 mins of songs and then were ushered out at 10.25.

£4.80 for 40 mins and only 20 mins of that actually on the equipment?? Does anyone else think that's a lot? Also there's a £20 registration fee payable every year!

Henry loved it and once he got over the intial apprehension he was shuffling to get to things which was fantastic and the whole point of us going. I do think we'll just go to soft play next week as it's half the cost and we can stay for a longer time and there are no songs which really isn't what I was expecting. (don't mind songs, just wanted him to have more time on the equipment)

He's asleep now so going to have a nap myself as I'm feeling a very tired lazy cow at the mo!
love to all
xxx

NeedCoffee · 26/01/2009 13:49

LLL-sorry you're still feeling off-sending you get better vibes.
Muppet-so what if you are pfb about Olly, he is you're pfb I also think you're a fantastic mummy and i think Olly is very intelligent, must get it off his mum. Yep, £4.80 is quite a lot, soft play sounds better

FT-that pram is fantastic! Very nearly justifys having another lo and if i stay stopped smoking i could use my stash to buy one in 9 months! Only kidding, no more for me for at least after i finish college in 3 years!

Inzi-hmm its a hard one, but i think i am with Alice on this, you will truely regret it if you don't do it, can you explain how inportant it is to you to your Grandma? Thinking of you

Well, i'm on day 4, still not had one, but wish the cravings would hurry up and sod off!

News from me, i have managed to get Shannon into the college nursery, but not got it funded, but its not too bad, £20 for 10-5, aslong as get my tutor to sign that i have been in lessons all day, she starts tomorrow and i have got an exam, so wish me luck!

Love to all xx

Stefka · 26/01/2009 17:56

Hey guys,

sort of fallen behind on everyone's news. I have my appointment at the breast clinic tomorrow so can't focus on what every one has said properly. Will catch up properly tomorrow once it is all over!

WhiteWineAndJaffaCakes · 26/01/2009 21:38

strawberry - glad you had such a good holiday - welcome back to the real world

muppet - thanks for advice re clarks - will bear that in mind. LOL at Ollie "don't want the chocolate cake then" - according to my mum I was exactly like that - I could not be 'bribed' or 'punished' with anything - I was far too independent and would cut my nose off to spite my face to get my own way. I grew out of it (if that's any small comfort!) And yes I think £4.80 for 40 minutes is outrageous. Do you have any SureStart centres near you? They do more or less the same thing for free.

ft - tried the other shoe shop first (Charles something?) - wasn't that impressed really, the woman didn't seem to measure the width properly and she then brought out size 4 shoes, didn't say what width fitting, and seemed surprised when Anya couldn't even get her toes into the end of the shoe. I gave up and went to John Lewis. I probably just got a dodgy salesperson though and might have more success now I know what size her feet actually are.

LES - glad you are sorted out now - what a relief.

NeedCoffee - utility bills will actually be huge as the immersion heater and electric heaters use far more energy than the gas heating. Ah well. Head in sand time. Huge well done on not smoking - that's so impressive. Keep going! Good luck with exam tomorrow.

Inzi - don't know what to advise really re the letter - what a difficult position for you. Think Alice's advice is good - is it better (or less bad ) to upset your family or to miss telling your grandad how you feel?

LLL - hope your cold gets better soon.

Stefka - good luck tomorrow.

Nothing new here. Anya was very good going to sleep tonight for our next door neighbour while I was at a client meeting (2 evening meetings this week...) She's talked non-stop all day - can't be long now before a recognisable word pops out surely.

alicet · 26/01/2009 22:01

Just a quickie - good luck stefka

Not ignoring the rest of you but only got home from work a short time ago and have to tidy house for viewing tomorrow! See you soon xxx

Dalrymps · 26/01/2009 22:31

Just popping in, will catch up properly soon, honest!

Stefka - Hope all goes well tomorrow, will be thinking of you x

Inzi - (((hugs))) hope your grandad is comfortable and you can see him soon x

muppetgirl · 27/01/2009 10:34

Stefka - am thinking of you today xx
