Hi - welcome to the new thread!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Pacita · 19/01/2009 23:24

eanz big hugs to you, and the hope for a quiet night.

Debs75 · 19/01/2009 23:48

Pacita I think you do need a prescription, my doc said it was instead of the epaderm which I used to get, as that makes my skin sort of heat up and get really itchy. Aqueous cream feels really harsh and stings.

Eandz You know your baby best and if you feel he needs to see the gp again then just get down there. If they fob you off or make you out to be a neurotic mother |(I don't think you are) then tell them you are going to take him to hospital. GP's don't like being showed up when you go over their heads.
It mighht be a good idea to see a different dr if you can.
My friends ds1 had a similiar problem which the gp's ignored and she ended up with him in hospital he couldn't keep anything down and was starving. They treated him (sorry can't remember what they did) and he was home a few days later. He was on special milk for a while.
Big hugs to you both and hope you get some answers tomorrow.

foxytocin · 20/01/2009 04:04

maggot send the whole tin for checking out. don't spread the contents over a surface. if there is one maggot in it from point of contamination there is possibly another or eggs from others. biologists have egg and maggot and full grown fly of all these things. i'd send the whole packet to baby milk action and let them find a lab to look at it.

'use by after opening' and 'use by dates' are a legal guidelines. no maggot should have been in there in the first place, irrespective of the guideline.

farnecombe surrey - anyone nearby and can make a slingmeet? I have some interesting news about it if you think you would like a connecta carrier.

foxytocin · 20/01/2009 05:58

ahem, i meant to add, CAT me for further details.

notsoslimnow · 20/01/2009 07:46

eandz....i had a similar thing with oscar afew weeks ago, turned out he was just constipated! feel terrible for you as he sounds like he is in alot of discomfort.does he always drink 36 oz of formula per day? im no expert but that is a massive amount.have you swapt formulas at all? i did this with devestating consequence...it gave oscar terrible wind and upset his digestive system.what formula do you use?

Hopefully · 20/01/2009 08:28

No explanation for the screaming! He refused to feed or be calmed in any way, gave him teething gel etc. Then he randomly took a full feed and went straight to sleep! Think he was probably totally over tired - he was up from 5:15-10:45pm with only one 10 minute catnap.

DG T loves to suck on a muslin - he goes to sleep every time with me holding it over his lips until he's asleep, then I take it away - can't wait till he's got the co-ordination for me to be able to leave it in with him, as I think it will probably turn him into the amazing self settling baby.

Meglet glad you're feeling so positive!

OMG, I think T is 18 weeks tomorrow (who else gave birth on the 17th? is it 18 weeks?), how did that happen? Still feels like no time ago at all. I remember seeing women with 3-5 month old babies and thinking they looked so together and on top of it all, and I still totally feel like I'm winging it!

eandz · 20/01/2009 09:24

thanks everyone.

notsoslim
he seems to be pooing fine. one to two times a day. there is always a big giant poo and then sometimes a little one. but he might want to poo more. 36oz is on a bad day he'll often drink 42oz in a 24 hour period. I'm feeding him similac for fussiness. i tried a few different types, but with this one he at least is able to sleep.

maybe i'm over feeding him?

Hopefully · 20/01/2009 09:39

eandz the recommendation on my box of formula is approx 30oz per 24 hours for a 3-5 month old baby. If you're using a different formula the recommendation may be different? Overfeeding certainly wouldn't be causing the insane amount of vomiting, but if he's taking more than he needs (I've heard some reflux babies do this as the milk is soothing on their stomachs) it might make the vomiting look even worse than it is.
I don't think you can particularly do any harm by overfeeding at this age though, as they seem to just vomit up everything they don't need, but perhaps it's another thing to mention to the doc?
Hope you manage to get a sensible doc/second opinion soon!

notsoslimnow · 20/01/2009 09:48

eandz.... have you tried a drop of cooled boiled water? this used to help oscar when he had tummy ache. 42 oz of formula is a huge amount.have you tried the secong stage of whichever brand you use?when oscar got to the point of drinking more than 37 oz of stage 1 he kept being sick and getting tummy ache from the volume he was tring to consume so i swapt to next stage and he went back to eating 30 oz ish per day with no sick etc.also less wind as it was thicker/x

eandz · 20/01/2009 09:52

me too. i'm waiting for the housekeeper to come before i head out. i need someone to hold noah while i shower. which really bothers me because i would have liked to workout before my shower-- but i can't just let Noah wait till I'm done.

thank goodness for this thread. i missed thee.

SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 20/01/2009 09:54

eandz persevere with the GP! My friend's baby had similar problems and after 7 months of seeing GP every week, being referred to dietician (baby wasn't putting any weight on) instead of paed as requested and being told to give her extra fat, oil and butter , it took a paed in a different country to tell her off for letting her DD being anorexic and tested her - turned out she had some intollerance (which she has now grown out of eventually).

oh, bugger! think a mouse or something is inside the extractor fan pipe... I'm sure it's walking up and down on top of the cabinets! eeeekkkk

jennylindinha · 20/01/2009 10:27

Good Morning Everyone, hope you are all well! We've got the lurgy here unfortunately and I'm praying that DD doesn't get the snotty nose as that will mess up feeding...

Meglet - glad that you are back online and that you feel so positive in spite of what's been happening.

Eandz - nice to see you back and sorry to hear about the problems with Noah. I don't have any advice but I hope that it sorts itself out soon. I've heard lots of positive stories about cranial osteopaths so hopefully that will work wonders for you.

imoscarsmum - glad you enjoyed the Water Babies! Our first class was cancelled but I took DD last week and it was fantastic! A bit manic as the pool was tiny and surrounded by excited/anxious parents. DD loved it though (well, she didn't hate it or scream the place down) and she didn't even mind going underwater although she hates water in her face usually. However, I had the same problem as you did afterwards - horrendous screaming at being wrapped in a towel and left while I quickly got dressed. To be honest, I just shoved on some knickers, joggers and top then a fleece and didn't even bother with a bra! Once outside, I fed DD in the car and then took her home. Not sure how to stop the crying but on alternate Fridays I'm going to pick up DSD from school and take her with me to help!

Pidge - great to hear from you the other day! I often wonder how things are going for you, especially when I'm out and about locally, particularly at the Horniman museum. If you ever fancy meeting up for coffee and cake, let me know. It would be lovely to meet you and your DC.

Right, better get some washing on and whilst in the kitchen I can raid the tin of ginger muffins I managed to make yesterday, mmmm.

ps. Sunflower, I found a mouse the other day - yikes! I thought we'd got rid of them all but they are wily little pests aren't they?

becaroo · 20/01/2009 10:45

DG Toby will chew anything!!! His fists, muslins, his blue blanket, my fingers.... Very red cheeks and unsetled in the evenings too lately....teething?? Oh my god!!

eandz You can get special formula from your GP called "SMA Stay down" on prescription. Might be worth a go....you seem to have tried everything else. I too know of children who were very sicky babies and it got better once they were on the move.

Tobys 4 month check today...

becaroo · 20/01/2009 10:49

........oh, and Toby often has 36 - 42oz per day.

On my box of formula (Aptamil) it suggests 35oz per day for 4-6 month olds, but they may be different for different formulas.

Sorry, have never heard of similac.

lollipopmother · 20/01/2009 11:16

EandZ - I am bfing DD so I don't know how many oz she has, but if she has a particularly long feed it always comes out in a spectacular fashion, and when she was super-little and I was feeding at every cry she used to have massive screaming attacks, I'm sure I was over feeding her which made her horribly uncomfortable.

Water Babies - I always get DDs cossie off then put dressing gown on with hood up and sometimes lay a towel over her too, dummy in, whilst I change, then I deal with getting her dressed.

imoscarsmum · 20/01/2009 12:12

Thanks all re comments about getting dressed after swimming. Will try to get me dressed first on friday and see what happens.

Eandz I cannot recommend a cranial osteopath more highly - I hope things get easier for you - it will get better at some point.
C has between 28 and 32 oz per 24 hours of SMA, think she'd explode if I gave her more (but she's not a big girl - still in her head hugger in her car seat )

C has her 3rd set of jabs today - dreading them. DP working from home too today so had hoped he'd come with us but apparently he needs a hair cut so has gone to get one. Not sure if he then has time for another trip out. Clearly he has time for hair cut but not helping our daughter with her jabs....

C woke us up at 5.30am today but for a very exciting reason - she had turned herself over in the basket and was on her back (sleeps on her front)! Very proud. Another first - she's having a short nap at present in her cot - very first time! think she's almost out of her moses basket.

Hopefully C is 18 weeks tomorrow and was born same day as T.

lollyheart · 20/01/2009 13:10

EandZ def keep on at the doctors, poor Noah and you it must be so stressfull.

Meglet im glad things are better for you now, if you did want to meet up with debithescot and i, i am always up for a meet up, and anyone else is welcome to.

F slept in his cot for the first time last night, he slept from 8.30 untill 7.30 i bet it was a one off tho , he has been waking at 2 and 5 for a few weeks now. I am still tired today as i couldnt sleep properly with him not next to me.

He can roll from front to back and when he is on his back he can roll on his side, dd rolled at 23 weeks and crawled at 6 months, ds1 rolled maybe once or twice at 7 months and crawled at 8 and a half months.
I used to worry if dd was not doing the same things as other babies the same age as her, i have learnt not to worry now all babies are different and do thing when they are ready.

CarrieBo · 20/01/2009 14:25

eandz can you ask your gp to refer you to a specialist?
Dd was ff and I'm sure the guidelines were something like 2.5x as much formula as their weight in pounds. So a 14lb baby should have 35oz or thereabouts.
Perhaps smaller feeds might be gentler on his tummy?
Really hope you get help and see improvements soon

eandz · 20/01/2009 14:32

alright, just came back from the doctors and lo and behold my computer still had you all up!

boy, was everyone really annoyed to see me . but noah did his crying thing for soo long they eventually squeezed us in. all in all i only had to wait 15 minutes for 10 minutes of gp time. i also told them that when i mean emergency, i'm not kidding and as i live literally next door i'll just walk in and wait to be seen if i'm not given an appointment thats reasonable.

they've upped his dosage of medicine from .3ml of renititdine and .5ml of domperidone to .45ml and .6ml (respectively) and told me to come back on Friday morning. he's calm right now, but of course he would be, he's in the sling watching winnie the pooh.

i was able to run for an hour and have a shower. i started to get cheeky and fantasized about my housekeeper wearing noah for an additional hour so i could get the centipedes on my forehead groomed into eyebrows...but then i noticed how unhappy the pair of them looked.

in other news, i tried gfing noah in the sling since he's been a poor sleeper as well and success was mine. he let me sit on the yoga ball for four hours until it was husbands turn, and when husband did it, he was able to sit on the yoga ball too. we both tried laying down a couple times and noah did his noah thing and screamed like a maniac.

eandz · 20/01/2009 14:39

pacita
i'm in london. i'll look at that link as soon as i finish this post. i hope they have availability sooner then the week after next.

meglet
you rock! i love how quickly you've bounced back with such a powerful optimism. i like how your very real with everything and how you've got your priorities sorted out.

eandz · 20/01/2009 14:41

notsoslim

you know, it didn't even occur to me to check if they do a stage two. what if they don't? then what will i do?

eandz · 20/01/2009 14:50

digitalgirl
yeah, noah is chewing on everything, he especially likes the part between his thumb and forefinger.

i am getting help. mil and my parents decided to hire us a housekeeper for a year as a present to me. (thank goodness the whole family knows how domestically useless i can be).

notsoslimnow · 20/01/2009 15:57

eandz... i used aptimil first then 2nd. see if they do a stage two and if not perhaps introduce a different one very very gradually.i do think though if a baby is drinking 40 plus oz per day it doesnt seem he is getting all he needs from that milk.i have honestly never heard of a baby consuming that much around this age.i let oscar have 36oz of first stage milk when he was having a hungry stage and he threw that up and everything else for the next day or so.there is only so much a little digestive system can cope with. in no way do i have any expertise in this BUT i would definaltely give a thicker milk a go so he is having to digest less but just as satisfied iyswim.?

LittleConnie · 20/01/2009 16:00

eandz how much does noah weigh? A weighs about 6kg and is on 0.6ml of ranitidine (75mg/5ml suspension) and 1.1ml of domperidone (1mg/ml suspension) and I don't think she's at the max possible dose... sounds like double what noah is on and A didn't improve until it was increased. Really don't mean to confuse things or muddy the waters but just want to give you hope that the meds can really work! Would your mum the doc be able to help at all with this?

SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 20/01/2009 16:38

hopefully things will improve soon eandz.... by the way, do your parents want to adopt me? I'd love a housekeeper...

DP came home and checked for mice, no trace, but put a net in front of the hole where the pipes goes out... there was definetly s.thing there......

went shopping and it turned itno a nightmare as we got to the till, at least the checkout lady told me just to hold DD and she'd get s.one to pack, she was really nice, or probably very sorry for me! oh, and DD woke up around 10.30pm and didn't sleep for ages, so she just watched the count of montecristo with us, as she was so chatty and didn't want to wake up DS too... so, won't mention her sleep again as she always wakes up a few times afterwards!!
