Bit bored so thought I would start the new thread

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Amberc · 26/01/2009 11:56

I however am going to post myself stupid as it is also my final week of stay at home-dom!

Paro - forgot to say that is a lovely dress - really nice detail in the back.

Mark and I are also being very childish and hardly speaking.

neenztwinz · 26/01/2009 13:12

Thanks for messages about Grandma. She is 84 and has always been very independent, this has really knocked her sideways. No updates today as yet.

Amber, aren't FF car seats only for babies who are at least 9mo no matter what their weight? They need to have strong neck muscles to withstand a crash. I can understand why you have put him in FF seat though but I have this sort of thing on my car seats and the DTs love to play with them. The longer the baby can face backwards the better and some road safety partnerships are lobbying for all stage 1 seats to be RF (tho they are so long that that will be impossible). Hope you and Mark can kiss and make up!

Paro, if the legs are sticking over the end it is fine, and their head can stick a little above the top - the eyes need to be at least level with the top of the seat. That;s what our local road safety people told me. I think 13kg is massive for those maxi cosi seats - that's 28lb. I have a niece who is 2 in March and is still only 24lb, she would never fit in an infant carrier.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 26/01/2009 14:02

Amber - I am with Neenz and to be honest I am shocked that you managed to buy a forward facing car seat before Luke is 9 months.

poppy34 · 26/01/2009 14:11

quick post to mark place as you lot can talk - amber/whinegums sorry you're not having such domestic bliss but look forward to amber/hh posting fury

neenzsorry about your grandma

sponge how ANNOYING about your wing mirrors.

edie getting her first tooth which explained the high maintenance/short attention span behaviour last week - once saw it poking through seemed to calm back down as opposed to acting like someone who made mariah carey look like a volunteer charity worker.

spongebrainbigpants · 26/01/2009 14:16

Thanks for the clarification on FF car seats - dh and I were just discussing this yesterday and didn't know when to switch. A is getting a little big widthways for his seat! We will hold out a bit longer though. I was going to buy a RF seat but we have been given a FF Maxi Cosi by friends so seems daft not to use it as I understand they are v good.

Neenz, hope your nan is bearing up.

josey, hope you get some joy from your complaint about your consultant - what a bastatd .

Hi everyone else.

vivaGlasvegas · 26/01/2009 16:01

Have been lurking as had no good news to post in our bottle battle.... until Friday! We have won, C is now taking a bottle quite happily twice a day, and I'm so relieved as she starts at nursery on Monday. it's been a three week marathon, so glad it seems to be finally over!

essie I have emailed you some details, if anyone else wants to know what worked for us, let me know!

I have been told the advice on FF car seats is 20lb or 9 months, whichever you reach first. my friend who's baby is a day younger than C (we're early July here if you remember) has been in one for a few weeks now as she's over 20lbs.

sorry for anything I've not caught up on...

FiveGoMadInDorset · 26/01/2009 16:04

They also need to be able to hold there head while sitting for 30 mins so basically able to sit undaided for 30mins otherwise there neck muscles can't cope.

spongebrainbigpants · 26/01/2009 16:56

Glasvegas - that's a relief cos I really don't think A is going to fit his car seat for another two months! He's already 21lbs 7ozs so maybe will think about it sooner.

bitofadramaqueen · 26/01/2009 17:06

Hi everyone, been mad busy over last few days so just been skimming and lurking...

On car seats, the safety information can be found here. I read up on this before, and came accross something (although I cant remember where I found it now) that said its no problem for babies be a bit long for a rear-facing seat, you can just bunch up their legs. However, if they are put in a front-facing car seat before they reach the safe weight, the force of a crash/bump could snap their necks.

Neenz I'm pretty sure the safety information is all about weight and that age ranges are just given as a guideline.

Gorgeous dress paro!

Aaarggghhhh, he's awake so gotta go!

Amber please dont feel I've posted to criticise you at all, I just thought it was pertinent to share this while it was being discussed.

Other news... I got an ipod touch for my birthday at the weekend and I love it!

On a more miserable note, I've developed some kind of sensitivity on my hands due to all the hand-washing that comes along with having a baby and now have horrid scabby hands. I've got some steroid cream and emollient (sp?) but be warned anyone who uses anti-bac hand gels a lot! Oh my useless GP also commented that some mums go a bit overboard with hygiene when they have a baby . Does anyone think that washing hands after going to the loo, changing a nappy or before handline sterile bottles etc from the steriliser OTT?

vivaGlasvegas · 26/01/2009 17:10

that's a really useful site BDQ, thank you. have bookmarked it!

definitely don't think your handwashing is OTT, I think it is exemplary!

Amberc · 26/01/2009 17:15

Correct Viva - that's 9kgs or 9 months old. They do say that you should try and keep babies in the rear facing seats for as long as possible though agreed. Luke can sit up unaided for any period of time he wants now - 30 mins/40 mins etc etc. He has great balance and sits in the bath without anything other than a non slip bath mat - sitting up skills all present and correct! He never topples over unless he's lunging for a toy so all muscles strong and ready to go and those MNers who have ever tried to hold him for more than 5 mins can verify his unbelievable strength! The Mothercare lady did ask if he could sit for 30 mins and I laughed as he's been doing that for ages! I wouldn't have put him in it otherwise obviously. He's so much happier in it so I am pretty sure I have made the right decision for our family. Thanks for the concern though!

FiveGoMadInDorset · 26/01/2009 17:17

Sorry Amber - didn't realise he was sitting. S is no where near it.

Amberc · 26/01/2009 17:18

PS BDQ your info backs up what I have said as Luke is just over 21 lbs so didn't take any criticism from your post at all!

Amberc · 26/01/2009 17:20

No worries Five

Rolf · 26/01/2009 17:39

BDQ - I have scabby hands, too, and around my wrists. I don't think there's much I can do to prevent it, what with Thea's nappies and DD1 pooing/weeing all over the place. I'm using a nice thick hand cream at night and it's feeling a bit more comfortable now. Hope yours is better soon.

spongebrainbigpants · 26/01/2009 17:45

Can't believe that Luke and Alex weigh the same Amber, they certainly don't look it!

Don't know whether Alex can sit for 30 mins or not as he doesn't stay still that long!

neenztwinz · 26/01/2009 18:17

Oh that's good Amber, hope I didn't offend you but couldn't not say anything in case it was putting Luke at risk. I'm sure you'd rather be offended if it means getting all the info (which you knew anyway!)

Been reading about Calpol - from what i can see it is linked to increased excema and asthma. My two have it all the time but I am not too worried. Lots of things can cause allergies so you've just to use it when you think they need it I think. I'd rather that than them be in pain. The doc said keep them dosed up to the max when they were poorly so he is clearly not too worried. I didn't give them that much though (only 2 or 3 times a day usually).

Amberc · 26/01/2009 18:53

Sponge - Luke is much plumper all of a sudden but he is also immensely long which is where the weight comes on I guess. Luke and Alex are very different shapes!

Amberc · 26/01/2009 18:54

PS - can babies this age eat fish fingers?

bitofadramaqueen · 26/01/2009 18:58

Glad no offence taken Amber I only caught snippets of the discussion and just thought the stuff that I came accross might be useful!

Can anyone link to the calpol stuff for me (apols if it's already been done)

Fish fingers should be fine I think Amber. Rolf glad its not just me. You should get to the GP while you get free prescriptions - she gave me a mahoosive tub of some liquid paraffin hand lotion stuff. I normally pay a fortune for a paraffin wax manicure!

spongebrainbigpants · 26/01/2009 19:14

Lol at A and L being different shapes - what are you saying about my baby?!!

Fish fingers should be fine I would have thought - have you checked salt content? Even if it's high, once in a blue moon isn't going to hurt.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 26/01/2009 19:16

If either of you are near an agricultural supply place then udder cream is amazing. My hands were covered in it when I used to do the milking and even though I was digging, shocelling spreading straw and they were wet everyday with freezing cold water they were still in good condition.

neenztwinz · 26/01/2009 19:20

Vaseline is great for dry chapped hands, I go through loads of the stuff.

calpol article

bitofadramaqueen · 26/01/2009 20:10

Thanks neenz. Unfortunately vaseline wouldn't really cut it with my hands - they have been sensitised to any kind of detergent and so I have a rash, broken skin etc etc. Properly scabby

five my employers are in the agriculture business - I'll have to see if I can get some!

Rolf · 26/01/2009 20:21

Wonder where in Liverpool I can ask for udder cream? .

BDQ I have a number of circular (say the size of a tiddlywink), red, rough patches on my fingers and they are slightly swollen. Also lots of cuts all over my hands. One forearm is slightly swollen and red and scabby (so attractive). Is that what yours is like?

Also on the subject of rashes, does anyone know if it's ok to put metanium on legs? Thea has a red weepy patch behind one of her rolls of leg fat! I'm trying to keep it dry but I think it needs a bit of help.

What a charming post. I won't start on my piles...

Can't remember if I posted that DH told the boys that his IPhone (which he loves) has a lie-detector programme called ILie .
