Bit bored so thought I would start the new thread

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

HH I guess I was only renting Fraser out - I'm not looking forward to going back to work because I'll miss the boys so much! But I know I need to so just need to stop thinking about it. (I don't think about brushing my teeth either - there's no point when it's something you have to do).

whinegums · 19/01/2009 17:12

Everytime I try to post on this thread B kicks off! So just a quick hello to mark my place. Josey, great news about Oli.

Big and Small is a favourite here too. Haven't found 'the' favourite Baby Einstein dvd yet, B is pretty much non-plussed by all of them!

spongebrainbigpants · 19/01/2009 18:28

josey, fab news - you must be a v proud mum!

SA, ohmigod you know the words off by heart! I think the batteries might accidentally fall out soon tbh with you!!

parofleurmapu · 19/01/2009 18:43

Quick hello, just to mark place

Fleur now has brochiolitis (only slightly) Drs here recommend ventolin every 6hrs and have given us an inhaler thingy Dont know whether its Spain being OTT or not any experience on brochiolitis?

Nice to see you back AH

We love bumba here for tv time check it out on you tube and in the night garden is popular
Though Baby Monet is on at mo and shes enthralled

well must go and put fleur to bed might check in later

AliandHerScallywag · 19/01/2009 19:04

Paro don't think it is OTT. Friend who had a baby on same day as me had her little boy in hospital overnight in Nov with it. Obviously it all depends on how serious each child is, but her DS was vomiting his feeds up so was getting dehydrated. Hope this doesn't panic you, but thought I should answer your question honestly. He quickly recovered and is fine now.

Amber - HC cream is viscious stuff so only prescription I would assume. You can only use it for a few days at a time v sparingly especially on the face where the skin is thinner. Yes P's cheeks are dry, but eczema occurs when the skin can't retain moisture as I understand it, so it's all part of the same thing.

neenztwinz · 19/01/2009 19:33

Systems, yes you need a nice low-maintenance semi with a garden! You must be mad to want a do-up job .

After DTs first teeth appeared last week T seems to be really struggling. Last week he was awake from 3am to 6am one night! Usually a feed gets him back to sleep straight away but last night he woke at 1.30, I gave him some Medised (5ml, the full hit, I was taking no chances ). I then just sat with him to see if he'd go back to sleep, he didn't (he kept crying ) so I fed him but he was not interested, then he started chomping on a toy so I put some teetha crystals in his gob, put on some bonjela and gave him a teething toy to chomp on and just left him to it. He then slept till 9am!

Not much else going on here, I have a bad throat, feels like I have swallowed a razor blade esp first thing in morning .

mellymell · 19/01/2009 19:33

Hi. Warning, long post on excema - hope it's helpful.

Interested to see all the posting about excema. My eldest had it and we were given all nature of creams by the GP. I finally had enough and went to see a children's skin specialist - Mr Harper at the Portland. It wasn't cheap but worth every penny.

He advised skipping the really thick emolument cream if it was petroleum based. It doesn't let the skin breathe and much of children's excema is caused by overheating. He said do use Hydrocortisone to zap the excema, but make sure you have a strong enough one to really get rid of it over 2-3 days, otherwise you just aren't sorting out the situation.

Bathe in warm, not hot baths, (max 10 mins) using oilatum oil and cream afterwards. I've found a brilliantly thick (water based) cream called diprobase which you can buy or get on prescription. Also, don't use soap in the bath but bog standard aqueous cream.

Hope this helps. My DS1 still has flare ups but it's no way near as bad as it was - he used to be continually itching.

Finally, for chapped facial skin when you can't use HC cream, try Elizabeth Arden's 8 hour cream - really thick and sticky but does the trick!!

parofleurmapu · 19/01/2009 19:41

No Amber you didnt scare me ive read a lot bout it so no what could happen. Thing is over here they do tend to dose children up and do quite radical things straight away without letting them ride their course but hey we have given her 2 puffs and we shall see if it helps she is wheezing slightly when brreathing but not having any real probs breathing etc fingers crossed it goes away quickly

poppy34 · 19/01/2009 20:37

sponge/systems so glad that you are sharing the joy of the vtech walker - according to vintage dad dh , vtech is pretty much a guaranteed sign that the toy will annoy the hell out of you with its noises. that said I've realised (as I sit here watching tv) that there is somethign as annoying as a vtech toy - MYLEENE KLASS.

josey great news re oli

ali glad excema seems to be improving a little.

paro its a precaution thing - I had ventolin off and on as a kid (was a sickly youth) but not needed it since I was about 19..but sorry to hear poor fleur is poorly

also for those of you with dry skin babies etc we've been using something recommended by midwife called doublebase (you can get it in chemists) -its basically watered down aquesous cream so skin can breath but isn't irritated - it also makes a nice non greasy body moisturiser. but has really helped when edie was getting v.dry skin...

poppy34 · 19/01/2009 20:39

on a more personal note anyone good any good home beauty tips for waxing legs etc? time has gone to sort gettting it done professionally (and if I ever get a free slot I don't want to waste it on a lge wax) and I'm hopeless at most kinds of home wax kits etc..any other tips for gadgets/home stuff for stopping me looking so european? I don't really want to go back to shaving.

spongebrainbigpants · 19/01/2009 21:06

poppy, lol at vtech toys - I used to hate Fisher Price toys but I have to say there is a special circle of hell all of it's own for the creator of vtech crap toys - they are HIDEOUS!

Essie3 · 19/01/2009 21:24

Poppy I would recommend an epilator. I have one and use it when I can't afford am too busy for leg waxes. Stings a lot bit, but hell, you've done childbirth now! I have a philips one I think. The newer ones are even better apparently. Would only use mine on legs, though, not 'etc' without gas and air at the very least, or hopefully diamorphine.
Downside is ingrown hairs, but not everyone is prone to them, and proper exfoliation would fix it.

spongebrainbigpants · 19/01/2009 21:30

Oops, should have prefaced that statement with "in my opinion" . Don't want to offend any big fans of vtech toys!

AliandHerScallywag · 19/01/2009 22:43

thanks Mel. We had diprobase prescibed initially and it seems ok for dry skin without the flareups. Have also heard good things about doublebase

Does anyone have any ideas for avoiding nappies that leak at the end of the night? For the last 5 nights, P has been soaked between 5 and 6 am. We tried changing him at 11pm but still the same. We have tried two different makes of nappies, and we have tried the next size up. Are reusables meant to be more or less absorbent? Very strange that this has only just started.

DebInAustria · 20/01/2009 06:27

Morning everyone, a better night here, Ethan slept until 3.00, fed, then slept until the alarm at 6.45 - hurrah!!

Allip - I find that nappies sometimes leak when the old size are a bit small and the new ones still too big.I can't help you with the makes as we use a German brand.Ethan will be going into the Maxi size soon.Oh - I've written all that and are you using reusables?

lol Sponge at your hatred of all things Vtech. I bought Ethan's walker from mil for her so it's a non noisy brick carrying one.

Neenz - hope T had a better night

Paro - my friend here had to spend a few days in hospital with her baby when she got bronchiolitis.Sounds like the Drs have diagnosed it early with Fleur - hope she's feeling better today.

Hello to everyone I've forgotten

systemsaddict · 20/01/2009 06:56

Paro as I understand it bronchiolitis is very common. Both mine had it and wheezed for weeks. I was v worried as a friend's baby had it and was hospitalised for a while. The dr. told me that a small percentage (3% or something?) of children go on to become sick enough to need hospital treatment for it, but for the vast majority it runs its course, with Calpol, Nurofen and lots of fluids to keep them comfortable, and as long as they can feed they don't worry about them. Of course each country has its own practices though and also your dr. has seen Fleur and made a decision based on her specific symptoms.

We are big fans of diprobase here! get it on prescription for both of them now. Also recommend epilator too - hurts a lot first time but you get used to it quickly.

Ali can't remember if you are on reusables or not? We use onesize nappies with Motherease wraps, with two boosters in overnight. They leak as you describe when the wrap is getting a bit small - Caitlin is now in medium wraps for the day and large wraps at night. I think also as the babies' bladders get bigger they can do bigger wees that the nappies struggle to absorb in one go, which is why it can suddenly start happening.

AliandHerScallywag · 20/01/2009 07:07

We use disposables (the shame). Thanks Deb and Systems.

No leak this morning because P woke up so early. However this was after he slept from 8.30 to 4.15. That's 7h45, what a miracle.

Does anyone have the problem of falling asleep as they sit feeding in the night? I keep on doing this and it means that I wake 50 mins later with a stiff neck and a sleeping baby. It was when I tried to put P back in his cot at 5.15 that I woke him up for the day...

parofleurmapu · 20/01/2009 07:29

Morning

my turn to work today, Fleur had a better night, no coughing from 12pm to 6am so that is good, slight wheezing and coughing this am but will shsall see

Thanks for all comments etc re bronchiolitis its so hard sometimes to know what to do, we are sticking with drs decision obviously and giving her the ventolin, but its all so different everywhere!!

Well its pouring down with rain here and 16C so not good weather either

Amber ive had a few leaks at night but find Huggies have been the best, but no other tips im afaid

AliandHerScallywag · 20/01/2009 09:55

Paro, we've been using Huggies recently, but they aren't working so well. I think the problem might be that P is a heavy baby but he isn't as tall as say the average baby of his weight who would be a fair bit older. So he is carrying his weight width wise possibly in thigh circumference and with a big pelvis which makes it tricky for the nappies to do up properly. (We are in size 4 or 4+ depending on the make)

DebInAustria · 20/01/2009 10:35

Ali - I'm too tired in the night to feed sitting up so I bring Ethan into bed with the intention of putting him back in his cot after the feed. Sometimes it happens but not normally, this morning he woke at 3.00, I fed him, next to me and next thing I knew it was 6.45 and he was still in bed with us!!

DebInAustria · 20/01/2009 10:41

Ethan had his 3rd injections today, he didn't even flinch, I think it helps that he has good solid thighs!!(Just like his Mum)

goingtohaveagoodnightssleep · 20/01/2009 13:31

Glad to hear Ethan took his injection so well. I still haven;t given DS his thrid lot but will take him on thursday before he has his 8 month check on friday.

Ali, DS had a couple of really soaked nappies when we started weaning. DS has the opposite problem wth nappy sizing. He is long so needs the length but has skinny snake hips so it looks as if I have really done them tighlty as the tabs overlap!

AliandHerScallywag · 20/01/2009 13:58

Skinny snake hips certainly don't run in our family

Deb - I do that too in the night when I know I'm not awake enough to sit up and feed him. Cosleeping is lovely in some ways, but we only have a double bed and P and I wriggle around alot which disturbs James. James takes it well, but I don't like to think of him being knackered before he leaves for work. I have also tried decamping to the sofa bed in Ps room, but the mattress is rubbish. Once I am tucked up in there, that's it for the night. P never makes it back to his cot; I end up with a stiff back, and James is abandoned .

FiveGoMadInDorset · 20/01/2009 14:13

Glad that Ethan is OK Deb

Well only one waking last night as her nappy was very full so she wanted it changed so less water tonight but so much better. I want to fly over and kiss your feet Deb.

and have finished birthday present shopping for DD tomorrow and DH on Sunday. I hate having 2 birthdays so close to Christmas.

abdnhiker · 20/01/2009 17:46

paro hugs to fleur! (no advice though).

Am absolutely zonked these days - so tired in fact that I took a pregnancy test - but I'm just exhausted. I think I need to cut back on the breastfeeding - we're still at 7 times a day and F should be able to handle more solids. Has anyone who's breastfeeding had sucess replacing milk with solids? If you're FF do you do the same thing? (and how when your LO is demanding milk?)
