So how is it going for everyone? Most of us have had our babies so how was the first few weeks?

urgh injections were very traumatic! Was on my own and Caleb screamed the place down, took me nearly 15mins to calm him down. I cried as much as he did! I gave Caleb some Calpol as he got a slight fever and was generally off colour. Caan't believe I need to go through it twice more, was really horrid

Had Caleb weighed and he's now 11lb 14oz! He's still a good baby and generally goes 6 - 8hrs at night sleepwise. Still hates been put down though so I tend to carry him everywhere.

7 babygros3 sheets (2 cot, 1 bed) and lots of sick later....
ds2 has reflux

Popsycal - your poor DS. And you too, all that changing sheets etc. I hope your DS isn't in too much pain from the reflux and that you find a suitable remedy for him. What are you trying?

popsycal · 28/04/2005 14:39

HV just suggested keping him upright after feeds and raising the head of his cot. She wants to see him at next clnic to keep an eye on his weight...
i am tempted to go and buy infant gaviscon to see if it helps...

OP posts:
Cristina7 · 28/04/2005 14:41

Is infant Gaviscon given without a prescription? I know when they are older you can try and thicken the feeds but it must be so tough now when they rely only on milk. My DD is puking a bit too, but nothing like reflux (yet & hopefully).

popsycal · 28/04/2005 14:43

i heaard that you could...i am breast feeding so dont quite know how it would work anyway...

might see how he goes today and see doc tomorrow if necessary. poor liitle mite screams and screams

misdee · 28/04/2005 14:47

popsycal, i have loads of infant gaviscon left from dd2 who has reflux. email your address and i'll pop it in the post tomorrow if you want. dd2 wont touch the stuff and the sicky episodes are getting less frequent.

misdee · 28/04/2005 14:48

you just mix it with water or a little EBM if i remember correctly.

popsycal · 28/04/2005 14:49

thank you.....t is worth a try...

Well, 6 days into the 'get tough' sleep campaign with Iris and for the 3rd night in a row she has gone down at 7pm ish, requiring only one return visit for a cuddle after the final feed and put down. What a marvel.

Really enjoying reading everone's posts here ... now I'm dashing off to slump in front of the TV and scoff some chocolate, before I feed Iris again at 10pm.

misdee · 28/04/2005 21:15

pops, your address for the infant gaviscon {grin]

popsycal · 28/04/2005 21:17

baby brain?

bonym · 28/04/2005 21:32

Shaalaa about Caleb's injections - not looking forward to those.

Leogaela - I have also been having problems with the Isis - couldn't get anything out to resorted to hand expressing. In retrospect though the pump may not have been put together 100% correctly (ie not all bits tight enough) so I will not give up on it completely.

Pidge - sounds as though you have is sussed with Iris. Do you actually wake her for her 10pm feed? If so, how? The only way we can get Grace to wake for a late night feed is by changing her nappy, and sometimes she becomes "too" awake and we have trouble settling her again. She dropped off at 8.45 tonight so I might just leave her to sleep and see how we go...
Guardian article is set for next Tuesday btw - health section.

Popsycal - the reflux sounds terrible - poor Harry (and poor you). Hope the Gaviscon works - I think I read somewhere that the GP can prescribe infant Ranitidine (Zantac) for reflux. Worth enquiring?

3mummy - I have times when I feel I am a bad mum for giving Grace a dummy sometimes so that I can get myself lunch/ have a shower/go to the loo etc. Logically I know it's daft to think like this, but some things just have to be done and are impossible to do with a crying baby

Re the poo situation - Grace must be unusual for a breastfed baby in that she poos at least once a day. Do you think this means that she's not absorbing enough of her feed? She seems to be putting on weight ok though so I guess I shouldn't worry?

I've managed to take dd to school every morning this week which I feel is a real achievement as before now dh had been taking her. Hopefully the walking there and back twice a day will help get me fit - I feel a bit of a wreck at the moment. Can anyone get into their pre-pregnancy clothes yet (go on, make me jealous!). Maybe I should stop eating so much chocolate as well...

Well, Dh is in Hamburg tonight so I think I will try to get an early night in to make the most of the fact that Grace is asleep already - going on the last few nights she will probably wake antyime between 1.30 and 3.30am. Here's hoping it's closer to 3.30

misdee · 28/04/2005 21:34

well Serena poo's round the clock. she is fully breastfed as well. she can let rip like her dad lol.

popsycal · 29/04/2005 09:21

harry is the same as serena!

OP posts:
Cristina7 · 29/04/2005 09:28

Popsycal - Harry must be getting lots then despite the rfeulx.

popsycal · 29/04/2005 09:36

i dont think it is too severe but it is getting worse not better.
saying that though, the tips the hv gave me have helped him be a bit more comfortable and he had quite a good night

Faiths poo problem is well and truly sorted!! I got up this morning after she had fed and fallen asleep again, and left her for 10mins while I made brekkie for DDs1 and 2. She was straining again in her sleep. When I went back in to get her up she was lying in a pool of poo! And yes, she was in our bed! ha ha, I'm just glad she's relieved! She was covered in it, I just stripped her off and bathed her - the only place she didn't have any poo was her face and hands! Yes, she was in a sleepsuit! I'm just glad she's breastfed or that would've been horrendously smelly.

Thanks for the tip on apple juice, it worked a treat .

Had my postnatal 6wk check up yesterday, all ok. Gave me the talk on contraception! Ha ha, a lot of people seem to think we don't know what that is - we've only got 3 children!! I'm amazed we are seen as a large family.

Bonym and misdee - I agree with you re poos, my DD1 whom I also breastfed pooed day and night, DH said to me the other day how he remembered always changing pooey nappies with her and how Faith is only ever wet. That was before we realised there was a problem.

Bonym - I fit into my pre preg clothes, but I was fat pre preg! I lost weight while preg, and am soooo hungry while BF I seem to be gaining - I've only put on 5lbs but my clothes feel like i've gained a stone . Anyone else really hungry?

3mummy · 29/04/2005 10:09

Popsycal - I remember the baby whisperer did some work with a baby with reflux, and was really succesful. I watched it while I was pregnant with Faith and cried my eyes out as DD2 had undiagnosed reflux and was in pain for the first few mths of her life. Although the HV gave us gaviscon and recommended thicker milk for her (couldn't BF dd2) she still suffered, and the doc didn't believe there was a problem.

So you could look out for that episode or search discovery health website. Hope you find it and get some relief for yourself and Harry.

norash40 · 29/04/2005 12:10

Goodmorning Mums,

Hope everyone had a bearable if not good night.

Hey 3Mummy I am breastfeeding and I also feel really hungry but I don't seem to want to eat most of the time but i try and my Mum is making sure I do.

About the weight, i don't know whether I have gained or lost but my clothes seem to fit ok. I wish I was loosing it though. I can't wait for to heal properly so I can start working out.

For now this seems like a distant dream.

ZoeC · 29/04/2005 19:13

Hi

Well, must be the sunshine but I've had a great day with dd1 and dd2 . Had a bit of a cry about it all to dh last night which helped, and I'm going to try and not be so hard on myself about not attaining the 'positive parenting' model I set for myself. I'll just feel like a failure every bad day I have. I have accepted that having them both on my own full time won't be easy, but in time will get better and in the meantime I can only do my best.

Popsy - hope your dd2 responds to the gaviscon soon. Still ,lots of sick here too but no pain. I read a description somewhere of a 'happy spitter' so I think that's what I've got ;)

Happily, I am in pre-pg clothes. Think I'm a few pound up but not too bad - bf must be good to negate all the choc I'm eating

I've been expressing using the avent isis - I can get 3oz in the morning while dd2 feeds on the other side, and she has taken it fine from an avent bottle. I am determined not to miss Star Wars at the cinema!!!

Oh, cute moment today with dd1 - she breastfed Baby Annabel!
