Oh MM, I'm sorry you feel like that. My lard has repositioned itself somehow. I'm very conscious of my huge boobs too. My fitted tops are mostly too tight and anything loose makes my bust look even bigger.

I was chatting to a friend about this recently. She reckons that she didn't lost the last of her baby weight until after she stopped breast feeding.

Maybe you should treat yourself to something nice to wear to make yourself feel better. You could wear it on your birthday.

Marthasmama · 20/01/2009 11:16

Don't feel bad! Thank you for the hug, I feel very honoured! Extra weight is extra weight, it doesn't matter how much it is, if it's affecting your self-esteem it's a problem. What makes things worse for me is that I used to be super tiny - size 0 tiny, but healthy with it! I am trying not to let it bother me too much because I have a responsibilty not to be too crazy now I have a DD! But it is hard....

Huge norks = hassle bfing! I can't do it in public, nothing subtle about getting these babies out!!! Thank you myjob - Martha is the English version of my Granny's name, it really suits her but freaked my mum out at first. Especially as Martha really looked like an Italian baby with big cheeks and black hair! I loved Frances but DH said no or Dorothy if it wasn't my mum's name. Dottie, so cute for a little girl.

I have read somewhere that your body often hangs on to an extra 10lbs while you're breastfeeding to ensure that you still have some fat reserves for bubs. Could be that....?

4andnotout · 20/01/2009 12:34

Awww thank you! Naomi is beautiful too, such a smiler! And loads of lovely blonde hair! It's fun having a girl after years of buying boys clothes isn't it?

Marthasmama · 20/01/2009 12:42

4andnotout - you have four (wow 4!) beautiful children and your poor body has been through a lot!!! If you're happy, don't sweat it!

Oh, I thought she looked blonde in your pics....must be the light or my laptop!! . My two get on really well, sometimes DS is a bit too affectionate though! Martha has the bald stripe round the back of her head but it is growing back, and it's still dark. I am dark and had black ringlets when I was a toddler, so maybe......

Damn this teething....Martha's been through three outfits already with her horrible bottom!!

Aubergenie - I can sympathise on the sleep. We had that last week, with him waking every 1.5 hrs and I ended up with ds in my bed, but he seems to have gone back to every 3-4hrs and sleeping in his cot in between (except when I fell asleep during one feed ). It's too uncomfortable to do that too often as we've moved ds into his own room & I'm on a single bed in there (dh's work is manic from now till beginning of March so he really needs some good nights sleep).

CSWS - we went to the docs today & have been given steroid cream, antibiotics (as there are some weeping bits) and some medicated shampoo for his cradle cap . I mentioned the milk thing and he swore that it wouldn't make a difference as the proteins in milk are processed in my gut before reaching the breast milk. However, a friend whose ds1 was severely allergic to milk was told that if she had continued bf she would have to have cut out milk altogether from her diet. So now I'm really confused (not that it takes much ). Do you have any links to info on the milk/eczema thing?

Myjob I agree on the clothes thing. With dd I lost most of my weight really fast, but this time round I'm HUGE. Just putting up with it now as I'm like MM and worry too much about affecting ds's feeding.

Ekka · 20/01/2009 21:23

myjob I obviously didn't read to the end of the thread before posting! Great news about naomi, but sorry to see your ds is sick. I hope that he is feeling better soon. We're all running colds here so I hope we don't have anything quite as dramatic from dd.

Must go and eat..... Am starving as usual.

CantSleepWontSleep · 20/01/2009 21:30

From this page Ekka - "A small percentage of breastfeeding mothers notice an obvious difference in their baby's behavior and/or health when they eat certain foods. Cow?s milk products are the most common problem foods and the only foods conclusively linked by research to fussiness/gassiness in babies, but some babies do react to other foods. Food sensitivities in breastfed babies are not nearly as common as many breastfeeding mothers have been led to think, however.

If a breastfed baby is sensitive to a particular food, then he may be fussy after feedings, cry inconsolably for long periods, or sleep little and wake suddenly with obvious discomfort. There may be a family history of allergies. Other signs of a food allergy may include: rash, hives, eczema, sore bottom, dry skin; wheezing or asthma; congestion or cold-like symptoms; red, itchy eyes; ear infections; irritability, fussiness, colic; intestinal upsets, vomiting, constipation and/or diarrhea, or green stools with mucus or blood.

The severity of a food reaction is generally related to the degree of baby?s sensitivity and to the amount of the problem food that mom ate?the more food eaten and the greater baby?s sensitivity, the more severe the reaction. Food reactions may occur within minutes, but symptoms in breastfed babies more commonly show up 4-24 hours after exposure. If baby has an acute reaction to a new food, or to a food that mom ate a large amount of, then he will probably be back to normal within a couple of hours. If baby is sensitive to a food that mom eats frequently, symptoms may be ongoing."

If you scroll down on that page there's another whole section on sensitivity to cows' milk protein too. It doesn't give a reference to the research, but I'd imagine it's probably google-able.
Unfortunately GPs are notoriously underinformed about most things breastfeeding related .

Will read and respond to rest of posts now.

Myjob - we're trying something different tonight too, as I've put ds to sleep in the Amby instead of in my bed. He had a good nap in there this afternoon, after I followed advice from Aitch to swaddle him and put him on his side up against the edge of it, so I thought I'd see if we could do it at night too. I still have to feed him more or less to sleep first, but can live with that if he'll then have a good nap/night. Fingers crossed. Might help dd to see that he's not in my bed too, as we are having real issues there atm.

Out of interest, can those of you who have any sort of nap/bedtime routine tell me when those naps are, roughly how long, and what time they then go to bed?
Ds woke from lunchtime nap at 2:20, and couldn't make it through to bedtime, but that meant that he needed another late nap, and ended up having it from 6pm-7pm, and then going to bed just after 8! Not that I have much control over when he naps, but I'd be interested to see how others manage.

hi all, Joe still full of a cold and cough and he's kindly given it to me and dh as well. That's the whole family now so hopefully we'll get over it and not get another for a while...

myjob - hope naomi is still asleep and she goes down ok after her dream feed. It's amazing that they fall asleep when we least expect it without any help from us!

CSWS - why no soya for boys under 2 years? Do you mean they can't have it to drink directly or can i not have soya milk and bf Joe?? Should i not be drinking it or am i being thick [again]? Joe doesn't seem bothered if i eat chocolate or a little cheese. I think it only bothers him if i eat a lot of cheese ..can that be right??

right off to bed to sniff some olbas oil...

Ekka · 20/01/2009 21:58

CSWS Thanks for the information! I knew there would be something out there somewhere . Wish I could help you on the routine thing, but unlike with dd, we have NO routine at all with ds poor chap. I did read on babycentre that babies get tired about 2 hrs from when they woke up, so to try putting them down about then as they will settle more easily. Worked with dd, doesn't work with ds (though that may be cos I've got no quiet time with him on his own to settle him as dd keeps coming up and snoring loudly to tell me that he's going to sleep - only to wake him up again ). Luckily he is relatively chilled, so it doesn't seem to bother him too much.

Woohoo! Think he may have found his thumb - just heard him stirring on the monitor, then some funny slurping noises and all seems quiet. We don't do dummies here (both of them hated them), so its a relief when they learn to settle themselves. Though dd is totally addicted to thumb sucking so I'm sure we'll have our battles later on....

Am going to bed now to get some sleep as I think its going to be a disturbed night - dd has a hacking cough and is not happy.

4andnotout · 20/01/2009 22:01

csws dd4 mainly naps on the walks to and from school around 9-10, 3-4 then up to bed at 7.30 with the other dd's. I have had enough of them all by then

CantSleepWontSleep · 20/01/2009 22:07

loulou - 'The Department of Health and the British Dietetics Association advise against this [use of soy formula] because soy contains high levels of compounds called phytoestrogens that mimic the action of the female hormone oestrogen and which could pose a risk to the long-term fertility of infants.
There is also a risk that babies who are allergic to cow's milk will also be allergic to soy milk, and sheep and goat's milk. '

As long as Joe doesn't have an allergy to it then it's fine for you to drink, and a small amount (eg an occasional soya yogurt) is ok for children, but not frequent or large amounts.

I got a new bath seat like yours by the way. It's very regal compared to his old one!

Wow that she manages 10am-3pm without a nap 4andnotout! It think that ds would be in meltdown by then!

4andnotout · 20/01/2009 22:11

She is a very placid baby, the easiest of the 4 so far

Marthasmama · 20/01/2009 22:14

Evening all. DD does not like to sleep in the day. I try to get her down but alas, she won't have it. SHe might have one nap during the day, on me, if I am lucky. Otherwise she wants entertaining all day. My son was the same, but he did start to settle into a routine of two naps a day once he we started weaning (which was at 3.5 months on the advice of the HV!). I have tried settling her after she's been awake for 2 hours but she just looks at me like I'm mad, starts laughing then starts talking to her mobile. Oh well! Night time, she feeds and dozes on & off from about 8pm then tends to have a big feed at about 10 then has her longest sleep, which can be four hours or can be all the way through. So not really a routine to speak of.

star6 · 21/01/2009 06:16

myjob - did she stay asleep?
csws - how did the amby work out?
DS usually doesnt last awake longer than 2.5-3hrs. He was doing 40 min morning, 1.5-2hrs mid day then 40 min afternoon for weeks... but a few days ago started doing two 1.5 hr naps then yesterday only did 2 40min ones!... but was exhausted by 5.30pm.

when you all say "sleeping trough" do you mean the baby sleeps without waking at all? Does it count as sleeping through if wentdown at 7pm and I only had to pat back/give a few sucks of pacifier only TWICE for 3 minutes each? oh, and 10.30 pm dream feed then back in cot.... does that mean he "slept through"? or do my back pats mean not?

Marthasmama · 21/01/2009 08:41

With a little one sleeping through means sleeping for 6 hours straight, so technically it depends on when he slept until this morning. Don't stress about get your LO to sleep through. It's more luck than judgement when you're feeding on demand. But it sounds as though you're doing really well with geting your LO back off to sleep! DD sucks her thumb so can usually settle herself as long as she's not hungry, but before she found her thumb it would take a couple of hours to get her back off to sleep! She won't settle with back pats and the pacifier makes her gag.

My DD refuses to sleep during the day so has to do a lot of catching up at night, which is not ideal as she gets really, really moody towards the end of the day. I have TRIED to get her to sleep during the day but she just won't do it, then she gets herself worked up and overtired. So it takes about thirty minutes of screaming most nights before she settles down. But she is just so stubborn about sleeping even in her pushchair! She's too nosey!
