Ooh, buckets, does the vinegar thing clear softener residue from the machine or nappies? My softener drawer keeps just filling with water after each wash and i have to syringe it out. I have tried just putting a hot wash on with no powder/clothes etc but to no avail. Do you think there might be softener residue bunging it up which might clear with vinegar? Also will white wine vinegar work as i don't think i have any plain? Sorry for hijack on antenatal thread, I keep meaning to post a message on Good Housekeeping and never get round to it [lazy]

VG - DS will go to sleep, either being fed to sleep, or with a dummy and a cuddle. Even if you are anti dummy this might work for a bit - perhaps by saying that the dummy stays in his bedroom, so isn't part of his day time routine?

I did a search on MN about feeding babies to sleep and had to laugh at all the "my baby self weaned at 3 and a half posts!

3 wake ups/night here. Oh well.

BucketsofReindeerPoo · 16/12/2008 09:17

Both. Vinegar softens the water which makes it more efficient at rinsing (as well as needing less detergent) and dissolving detergent Also neutralises nasty niffs to a degree. Have you actually taken the drawer out to soak/scrub it or is the blcokage further in?

BucketsofReindeerPoo · 16/12/2008 09:22

VG if he doesn't suck his thumb naturally, you really need a dummy as a boob alternative. If Kurt won't sleep it's usually a burp issue so I wear him upright in the ringsling so he can doze off with his favourite thumb in his mouth while the milk gets a chance to sink further down his gut.

SazzlesIsASleighBell · 16/12/2008 09:29

Buckets our whole utility room is so rammed in that i can't open the door of the cupboard that the washing machine is in far enough to pull the whole detergent drawer out. I have cleaned it as far as i can and syringed it dry of fluid but it refills every time

I think i will try a vinegar wash today - do i put powder in or just a wash through with vinegar in the softener drawer? Also what temp do you recommend and is white wine vinegar ok do you know? [non domestic goddess emoticon]

BucketsofReindeerPoo · 16/12/2008 09:42

Can't hurt with the wine vinegar (I've used ordinary malt before) and just a 40degree wash since you've already tried a hotter one. Could bung some not-stained-only-slightly-smelly clothes in too for a freshen up.

cyLENTeeNIGHT · 16/12/2008 09:54

is feeding to sleep not recommended then? Joe's routine has always been bath-pjs-feed/sing/cuddle. lately he's been staying awake after the feed is finished and we've been able to settle him okay - i've even put him down semi awake and thrashing and he's dropped off on his own, which surprised me.

glad to report that nappies are still blood-free still lots of little poos, but he seems happy enough

off to nct coffee morning in a minute, so must wrestle Joe into his snowsuit

FestiveGardenia · 16/12/2008 10:13

He does suck his thumb, which has always been great as he can just pop it back in which he couldn't with a dummy. Tried last night not feeding him to sleep in stupid, desperate thought that could accustom him to going to sleep without feeding which would lead him to resettle himself at night. Don't ask, it was too horrible.

dingdong do you mean a holding cuddle or him-lying-down-you-being-reassuring cuddle?

Might rinse my machine through with vinegar too, I have gloopy conditioner drawer also.

AndHeaVanAnnNatureSing · 16/12/2008 10:23

I feed Seb to sleep. He always has a feed last thing and falls asleep while feeding. Just hope he learns to settle without feeding at some point.
Had a better night last night at least he even slept through the racket DP and I made hehe

sambo303mincepiesconsumed · 16/12/2008 10:41

Good morning ladies, just popping on as off out to SIL's for nice lunch/baby talk (she has LO of 6 months) plus she's handing on the 3-6month clothes

Hope all are well - dp off sick today and kept DS from his morning nap for play/watching cartoons - to make him feel better

SazzlesIsASleighBell · 16/12/2008 12:01

TwilightSurferChristmasAngel · 16/12/2008 12:21

Vinegar? never thought to use it in the wash.

Sambo, 3-6 month clothing? Now I feel horrible....Reese grew out of that size at 2 months. WHAT HAVE I CREATED?!?!?!

Sazzles, yes 52%. i only ordered 100 cards so quite easy to keep track this time. i need 130 cards but my plan this year is to delete some non-senders/folks who have no intention of keeping in touch.

as for sleep, i am thankful reese is a natural go to bed kid BUT last night, beginning around 2am things went like this:
feed, replace dummie, sleep, replace dummie, sleep, replace dummie, sleep, replace dummie, sleep, replace dummie, sleep, replace dummie, sleep, replace dummie, feed, WIDE AWAKE

TwilightSurferChristmasAngel · 16/12/2008 12:23

Oops is supposedly waiting til January so that should put her on the October/November thread.

TwilightSurferChristmasAngel · 16/12/2008 12:25

Will be adding another thread to my readings tonight.... DD1 is STILL wetting the bed. I was just sure she'd have grown out of this stage already.

NoroomattheCaveman · 16/12/2008 12:36

TS thats odd - ds1 wet the bed last night for the first time in months

VG I feed O to sleep, and I did it with ds1 too. Moved on from feeding him to sleep when I stopped bfing at 10.5 months, but then had to sit with him whilst he fell asleep . Okay so not so great on my part! My mum finally convinced me he could self-settle when he was around 20 months!! eeek. Hope not to be so easily pushed over lacking in resilience for ds2

Oliver is patiently sat on my lap whilst I am typing, so he is giving all his mn aunties a little pudgy-fisted wave

dingdongmerrilyfromhome · 16/12/2008 13:04

final baby-not-sleeping thought (and given that my temperature issues before coming to the UK were a/c related bear with me on this one)

I was worrying that as DS was feeding so much during the night he was also weeing a lot, and that as I don't usually change his nappy at night all this wee was getting cold in the nappy and making him cold.

Last night I changed his nappy during the night but no noticeable improvement in sleep. Nice theory anyway.

VG No - unfortunately a proper hold him, sit him on my knee or walk around cuddle! I also sometimes put him in the ring sling, which will sometimes send him off to sleep.

Sometimes in the night I put him back to bed awake and he will settle, or I guess that he does as time passes before I wake up again.

Dizzy said that sleep improved when her DD moved into her own room as she only woke with proper cries. Again I'm not sure if I wake too soon with DS - on the other hand I don't really feel ready to move him out yet!

Hello Oliver! DS is being very cute on the floor and he has started making very cute b-type farting noises.

SazzlesIsASleighBell · 16/12/2008 13:14

dingdong Emma has been in her room from about 10 weeks, sadly i can confirm this is about as effective as midnight nappies!

OP posts:
cyLENTeeNIGHT · 16/12/2008 13:45

yes, that's a thought - did anyone actually do the double in the end? (perish the thought [eek])

MerrySibhmas · 16/12/2008 15:38

Thanks Buckets-- DD2 is actually much better today. The drop of lavender in the bath water and the calendula cream have helped I think. I use the vinegar normally too. I think I might be bunging too much detergent in at the moment so will fiddle with that.

Sazzles when my machine kept showing a random error I put bicarb in the main drawer and washed at 90--not a setting I normally go near, but it cleared it and it has been fine since. I think it had just got gunked up. And the machine didn't blow up either, a possibility that didn't occur to me until afterwards ...

I may have mistakenly given the impression of having a handle on bedtimes. I fed the other two to sleep for a very long time, and have been doing that with DD2 too but she's been getting fidgety about staying asleep when I put her down and picking her up just starts the whole process again. She has decided for herself that dropping off while listening to Newstalk (Irish five live equivalent) and fighting with a muslin is the way to go. If she fussed at all I couldn't do it. I'd rather be exhausted and woken all night than tackle sleep training of any kind. My sister with the immaculately sleep-trained kids who sleep through from 3 weeks each is expecting her fourth baby who will of course behave like that too and thinks I am a wimp

BucketsofReindeerPoo · 16/12/2008 16:08

Longway, a wet nappy will stay body temp-ish in a normal wrap. Wet things only get cold through evaporation.

Kurt just had his 3rd jabs, that knocked the flirty grin off his face LOL but only took a minute to calm down. He has got so much more smiley and friendly lately, was quite shy and startled-looking for first 4months. Have stopped worrying about autistic hypersensitivity now (that's one symptom crossed off the list anyway, many more to watch for over the next few years though).

dizzyjingles · 16/12/2008 18:26

for those of you wondering whether or not to move to own room can I add that Dylan has now been sleeping through for 2wks (I think we had one or two broken nights with her coughing somewhere?) and last night she slept from 6pm until 8am

she's down at 6pm again tonight so fingers crossed I haven't jinxed it by writing it down and if it makes any of you feel any better DD2 still has to have a shout at least once during the night in the wee small hours which wakens us up

sibh I fully understand - I fed DD1 and DD2 to sleep and DD1 used to take a bottle with her to bed when she got older DD2 had her dummy for comfort but and I consider this a near miracle, I can put Dylan down awake and she'll have a wee kick about, find her thumb and go over - thank goodness as otherwise I think I'd be in a right mess

sazz I spent 45 minutes attacking my washing machine drawer this morning with a bottle cleaner brush covered in bleach - seems to have worked a treat even though it was a complete PITA!!

will not be staying up until stupid o'click tonight waiting on DH - we're going to a car auction again tomorrow so up bright and early

buckets hope Kurt doing ok after his jabs

No1 any more news on your nephew or have I missed it?

OhLittleBitShyOfBethlehem · 16/12/2008 18:47
