New thread!

0-9 months one are Group 0 Neenz. 'Tis all very confusing. We currently have maxicosi one, but just planning ahead to try and decide which one to get for next time round. No idea what S weighs at the moment but he completely fills his car seat. Before long his head will be popping over the top!

No snow here Deb but its bloody cold. S is a wee bit poorly so we've stayed in all day. He's got a horrible cough and is very clingy.

Neenz what's this medised stuff? Did it used to be ok for babies and isn't recommended now?

spongebrainbigpants · 07/12/2008 16:36

snowqueen, medised is like calpol but has a mild sedative in it that is supposed to very effective! Consequently it was found that parents were rather overusing it to give their children a good night's sleep even when they weren't ill (or give themselves a good night's sleep should I say!) .

Hence the advice has been changed - still perfectly safe for babies but shouldn't be sold for use on children under two because of the misuse/overuse issue.

Plenty of people still use it for the occasional night, such as babies waking frequently with colds.

if it helps .

sybiltherednosedreindeer · 07/12/2008 16:59

oh dear Josey, I am so desperately sorry you feel this way, I hope you will reconsider and stay with us as you are in no way a 2nd class mum on this thread. If anything, I would say the responses to any news you have on yourself and Olivia show you are one of the more well-known and well-liked mums on here.

I have spent most of the weekend making a photo calender for the grandparents. Its a tradition we started 7 tears ago when ds1 was born and they really like it but it takes ages! Still all done now apart from the binding and very professional it looks too!

FiveGoMadInDorset · 07/12/2008 17:19

We gave DD medised in her juice for the flight back, she woke briefly on landing and styed sleeping until we were off the plane.

bitofasnowqueen · 07/12/2008 17:30

Thanks sponge - interesting thread!

sybiltherednosedreindeer · 07/12/2008 17:30

Welcome back 5gomad by the way, glad to hear you had a fab time.

bitofasnowqueen · 07/12/2008 17:59

Oh, I went and bought a car seat.

If anyone sees it at a better price after Christmas dont tell me

OP posts:
neenztwinz · 07/12/2008 20:33

They are so expensive aren't they . And I have to buy two.

5GoMad I am shocked ! Medised is only paracetemol but it has an antihistamine in it to help 'aid restful sleep'. Yes for some babies it is said to be very effective. When I have given it to mine it hasn't been THAT good ie they still have woken, but I think it is better than Calpol alone (it is only the same amount of paracetemol as Calpol, no stronger). The reason they say only over 2s now is cos some babies in the US were OD'd by their parents cos they were using Medised and Calpol together ie not reading the label so because they are so stupid we all have to suffer. Well, not if you are prepared to lie like I did . Theo and Esther have both gone to sleep tonight without any medicine but I have it ready to use if needed later!

bitofasnowqueen · 07/12/2008 20:42

Kiddicare do a discount for multiple purchases neenz - having twins must cost a fortune! What about toys and stuff at Christmas - will you buy two of things or buy them different things that they can share?

On medised, had a chat with DH after reading thread that Sponge linked to - we remembered the news item about medicine's being removed from sale because people didn't understand the dosage etc. We decided that we would fib and buy some to have in stock in case of very bad stuffiness/colds but stick to calpol for more minor. Think we might get some baby friendly ibuprofen type medicine in too. Although Neenz did you mention that it's best not to give it too often because its bad for their tummies? I'm pretty sure that overuse of nurofen in grown-ups isn't good for tummies either. If I take it on an empty stomach it makes me throw up!

Right, back to Miracle on 34th St for me

bitofasnowqueen · 07/12/2008 20:47

Oh neenz, we were talking about tongue thrust the other day... When I gave S some calpol at bedtime (he's got a cold and horrible cough ) he was grabbing the spoon and pushing into his mouth - do you think the tongue thrust reflex is gone? . When I took the spoon out he pulled it back in.

OP posts:
neenztwinz · 07/12/2008 20:47

HV told me last week that ibuprofen can irritate their tummies and not to give it too much. We also use Medised for 'emergencies' mostly, although often if it is sleep time and they are teething/have a cold etc and I am thinking of using Calpol, I might try 2.5ml Medised instead, after all if they are having the paracetemol anyway, they might as well have something that helps them sleep too. Sometimes I give 2.5ml Medised and 2.5ml Calpol.

passroundflourymincepies · 07/12/2008 21:03

Interesting re discussions on calpol etc.
I am dosing fleur every night at the moment because she has an awful cough and she wakes crying because of it

here we can get apirital which is just paracetamol 100g and its recommended to give her 1.2ml every 6hrs I don't really know if its working cause she still wakes every time she coughs.

Thinking of picking up some stuff when im back in england and id be prepared to lie and say shes 2 if it helped her to sleep cause at the moment its not nice at all
Hopefully it will go soon drs say her chest is clear and if it carries on she can have antibiotics

sorry ego post but no time to post more in and out of fleurs room all eve!! Actually thinking of going to bed with her so im nearer to console her!!

neenztwinz · 07/12/2008 21:08

LOL at tongue thrust reflex - I wasn't very good at determining it in mine. BTW Theo is now very good at feeding himself cucumber and rice cakes, so much so that he doesn't like me spoon-feeding him anymore. If only he could get more than 10 calories down him by himself! How BLWers cope, they must be up all night BFing their starving children. I will be very interested to follow any of our June babies who are being BLW'd.

neenztwinz · 07/12/2008 21:11

Paro - definitely pick up some Medised when you are in the UK!

Re. Christmas presents for the twins - we are not buying them any. They don't need anything, they dont understand Christmas and they are going to get loads of gifts from other people so we are not bothering. In the future we will just have a budget. Me and DH are both from big families and we both grew up with no money so we have no problem depriving our kids of all the 'must-have' toys! I think it is character building!

DreamingOfMincePiesInAustria · 07/12/2008 21:11

I did puree and a broccoli stalk today Neenz, so I could spoon in the calories whilst Ethan experimented!!The look on his face when the broccoli fell apart in his mouth was classic. It was like "hey my toys don't normally do this!" He managed to swallow some though.

Jollyjoseyjinglebells · 07/12/2008 21:34

I have probably been a stupid oversensitive B*tch will you forgive me and let me sneek back unnoticed?

I have never used Medisise, I was advised by a doctor when DD1 had a bad virus and fever, to use both Calpol and Ibruprofen as Ibru is only 3 times aday you stick it inbetween the calpol, and there was something on the news a year or so back that using this way helps children recover better. BUT Ibru isnt good for there tummies taken on a regular basis. Olivia cant take is after the blood in her sick and if there is a tummy issue this will upset it more.

Snowqueen that is the car seat I have but the older version.

Neeze could you maybe be given one or money for them for Xmas presents? I know its boring but 1st Xmas they will be non the wiser and we did this for DD1s Maclaren

Jollyjoseyjinglebells · 07/12/2008 21:36

Also after 3months calpol can be given at 5mls if they are really poorly.

Jollyjoseyjinglebells · 07/12/2008 21:40

If babies struggling at night, I put Vicks on a muslin and either put in the cot or over the side, out or reach, Oli having the tube a put a small dab on the tube as that nostril is usually over blocked and if really bad I ruin her baby grow with dabs on that. I can honestly say it has her sleeping in 5mins.

OK I will shut up now

UpsidedownChristmascake · 07/12/2008 21:41

Josey, have been lurking but just want to say am glad you're back. As others have said, I find your strength awe-inspiring, and you have had an appalling year. It's wonderful that Oli has been babbling. That must be so exciting.

EssieAStarInBethlehem · 07/12/2008 22:00

OK, haven't read all the way through, but realise that I'm guilty, Josey, with my 'How on earth can it possibly'. Really sorry.

I have Gilbert's Syndrome and can talk about it if you want.

And I'm going to pieces here - thoroughly depressed, smashed my breastpump in mega furious anger last night, and Iestyn is refusing to take a bottle.

EssieAStarInBethlehem · 07/12/2008 22:04

Sorry, will attempt to cheer up!

Jollyjoseyjinglebells · 07/12/2008 22:10

Think I have finally got through all my Xmas Cards.

Essie, are you ok? that would be good, the havent said much just think you have it and we will re test, having googled, I do have some symptoms, also symptoms of Thyroid being underactive, but symptoms only mild. I just think its the last thing Olivia would need ontop of everything
I think I still have my non used BP(for obvious reasons) in the cupboard I could look and post it to you.
AND if not taken notes of who said what, I have probably been bang out of order.

neenztwinz · 07/12/2008 22:16

Hey Josey! Welcome back, glad you are feeling better. I was feeling very hormonal yesterday and was thinking maybe it is something in the water .

Essie, what's happened?

neenztwinz · 07/12/2008 22:18

Don't sweat it Josey . If anyone deserves to have a rant it is you.
