I suppose I could be writing cards too but I can't be bothered.

Debs you could try rooting about in his mouth before feeding, its similar to tooth brushing motion. I cant really hurt I suppose seeing there is history with your other 2 boys. DO you mind me asking what they have difficulties with, you dont need to answer just interested.

Well one has to go to Australia so thought id better.

Im scared that Oli is sleeping so much,I wont get sleep. hopefully she is just sleeping through the cold and wont get another one or she wont get her op.

I have the docs for my test results, I had unpteen blood tests and swabbs cause Ive been bleeding for about 10 weeks now. Im dreading it. I have to say I did have such a laugh with the poor nurse that did the tests, I was so cheeky[sblush]she took it well though

Josey - hope the results are OK.

Stefan was quite slow to talk and had trouble with various sounds, unfortunately s and f were 2 of them!! so he would say his name was "tepan" He's OK now apart from the dreaded "r" in a Jonathan woss fashion

Tristan had undiagnosed glue ear and enlarged adenoids which meant his hearing was very bad whilst his speech was developing. He's had an op here and this is much better but he still has so many problems with sounds, we've mastered h, s blends - st, sp, sn now , and presently we're working on c, k, which used to make him retch to say them but don't now so he is making huge progress.

It doesn't really help that he's having to be bilingual , and as a result of being here I think his spoken English has also suffered - he still has problems with grammar - eated instead of eaten, wroted etc etc..I think it hasn't developed that much since coming here, it's still at a 3 year old level, which is really frustrating as he's a bright boy.

Essie, step aside... my eggs are first in the queue .

Theo has been waking every hour again this evening. He has a cold I think (snotty nose). He has not needed any painrelief today (unlike yest) but I have just given him some ibuprofen cos waking every hour is not like him. The HV said today ibuprofen can irritate the tummy so not to give it too much, but still have no calpol (one hour wait at chemist for prescriptions!) so had no choice.

Essie, AK says try your basic fruits and veg (apple, pear, banana, sweet pot, parsnip, butternut squash, swede etc) on their own, one a day to check for reaction. I tried apple first, they weren't keen, then carrot, not keen... it took a few days. I think it was parsnip or sweet pot they took to first, and baby rice. Baby rice is good cos it tastes like milk so all they have to do is try to swallow, they don't have to wonder 'what the hell is this in my mouth?' as well as trying to swallow!

I get so at the weaning threads! Interesting that VS hasn't replied to my post about whether a baby who wakes in the night cos of hunger stops waking after weaning. Er, cos of course it stops waking cos it is not hungry any more!

Neeze I bet these ppl are the real slobs that actually have there babies drinking coke from a bottle lol!!!

Gosh Debs, thats interesting but very sad with the Hearing affecting the speach. It must be frustrating but you also have to think that they are much more advanced than British children the same age who struggle with English never mind can talk two languges, and German is bloody hard(proud face for your boys) My neighbour is swiss, his wife hasnt learned German and they arent teaching there children, but they plan to eventually settle in Switzerland

Thank you for asking the weaning question Essie and everyone else for your replies. Think I may try this weekend too. Quite excited about it!

Yes, a laptop should last longer than 18 months. Grr. [fanger]

Bitofasnowqueen and Deb - thank you for the extra hugs! All gratefully received.

Jingle - I don't think rolling is all it's cracked up to be, in fact it's terrifying! Ryder hass started really pushing himself up on his arms (when on his tummy) and then launching himself into a kind of midair roll, you can always tell when he's done it because you can hear his head bang on landing and then the crying starts...

LauraT - Being 30's not too bad eh? I really dreaded it, but it ended up being the best year of my life. Hope you had a good day.

Josey - Have you kicked off on the weaning boards yet? I'm meant to be doing Xmas cards too. In case any of you need to know (Josey, yoou clearly already do), it's the last day to post anything to Oz/NZ pre Xmas tomorrow, so we've been wrapping presents tonight. Think we might get a tree this weekend. It's going to be just behind R's "dining chair", wonder how 'decorated' it'll be by Monday if I start weaning on Saturday...

DingDongAli - A friend worked the PR agency for that camcorder and it's brilliant, really easy to use. Looks cool too. I like the meet up idea too. Anyone coming down to London for some Xmas shopping want to join us?

BTW - What's the Ethan test?

DH just come home very very pi55ed. I have no problem with that, but am not looking forward to the snoring that usually ensues...

Morning

I am human - I woke up in a pool of milk because Ethan had slept through (smug Mummy emoticon)
No idea why it happened, it's surely to be a one off, yesterday we went out in the afternoon and on the way home Ethan screamed in the car for a good 25 minutes, much to the despair of his brothers sitting either side of him. We got home and I bathed him and changed him,a good long feed then he slept 8-6.30.It's not something I want to repeat every day for a good nights sleep though!

Ethan test - (someone else named this) when they grab food you're holding, and attempts to suck it, eat it. Ethan did it with my apple a few days ago, so now we're weaning.

Report
bitofasnowqueen · 05/12/2008 08:24

Oh that's great Deb. Fingers crossed its not a one off! Am pleased to report that S's random night time wakings seem to have eased, he's been back to just waking a couple of times for his dummy and going straight back to sleep, so we've not had to bring him into our bed.

And considering weaning this week or next. S is draining his bottles and reaching for food. Had good head control etc. How can you tell if they've lost the tongue thrust reflex? [thick mummy emoticon]

Hi everyone, loving all the festive cheer.

Happy birthday Laura!

Hi Josey, very interested in everything the SALTS are saying to you about weaning etc. If anyone takes a pop at you on the weaning boards, I'll take a pop back at them for you

Waves at Essie and Penguin

Sorry for lack of contact lately. C, D and I have all had some ghastly virus that involves a high temperature and nothing else. DS is now recovered, DD is on the mend but very very grumpy, and I still feel like s**t. DS came down with it just before his acting debut as one of the Three Little Pigs in his Christmas show, and I'm afraid I Calpoled him and sent him on.

I mentioned to a few of you that the HV had told me to wean Dorothy early (ie at four and a half months) because she's dropping through the centiles, and is now back on the ninth, where she started. Well, she's now puked up baby rice, apple and pear and the doctor has told me to wait until six months as her digestive system is not yet mature, and not worry about her weight. Honestly!

UDC - HVs! They are obsessed by the weight charts. Just stick to milk until she seems unsatsified with that, when the DTs started cluster feeding I took it as a sign to wean.

BSQ - I wondered that too about the tonge reflex. I just stuck my finger in their mouths to see if they stuck their tongues out. They didn't - they looked at me as if to say "what on earth are you doing?" - so I took it to mean they had lost the thrust reflex but they still spat food straight out when we first started. I think the tongue thrust reflex thing is a load of old bollox actually just like most of the militant 'only wean at 26 weeks' list of signs they are ready!

Not a bad night here - after waking every hour between 7-10 last night (again), Theo was up at 4am, he has a cold, but Esther slept 7-7.50am. Not complaining!

I really have loads of housework to do - need to get off MN!

Sponge what on earth happened to your message? Was it the one where you responded to me with my eggs? The twins film analogy has already been made: Ali's Peter and my Iestyn...hmm... Neenz I suppose ypu can double up on them eggs, so possibly more efficient?!

Weaning - well, tried carrot yesterday, a total disaster. Then this morning tried baby rice and he seemed to take some! That was a minute ago, and I've now just heard a huge nappy being produced. So got to go.

Sorry a total lack of posting, and self-centred - computer still broken, long saga, burst into tears in PC World (so can never go back to that particular store) and raging about the injustice of it all... Plus Tim's computer is strange and not as good as mine.

Report
EssieAStarInBethlehem · 05/12/2008 10:16

Oh, thanks to all replies on the weaning - it clearly worked as he took 3 (tiny) spoonfuls. I stopped then, didn't want to push my luck.

And also, stupid comment on Tim's computer - of course it's better than mine because he has a screen. Duh!!

Off to deal with that nappy.

Essie, I asked for it to be removed . I'd mentioned something on there that I didn't really want lost on a busy thread - wasn't thinking, but it suddenly upset me so I took it off. Sorry, that makes no sense at all, but it wasn't anything to do with the eggs thing .

Very hormonal yesterday - period started today so kind of explains everything .

EssieAStarInBethlehem · 05/12/2008 10:44

Oh, ok, Sponge - I was worried that you thought you'd said something that offended me. Which you hadn't. Hope you're ok.
I'm wondering about my period actually - bursting into tears in PC World is odd behaviour. Then again, this silly computer business is really making me feel like a victim. Odd.

Top parenting tip from Essie - if you hear your baby beginning to fill his nappy whilst sitting in the bumbo, move quickly. Do not carry on typing on mumsnet. Do not pass go. Just move. Iestyn had poo in his hair!! (And he's so very fair...)

Report
sybiltherednosedreindeer · 05/12/2008 13:31

Deb, I wouldn't worry too much about late weaning with speech problems. I weaned ds at 16 weeks and he had terrible speech problems, at 4 he was completely unintelligible, and it took a year of private speech therapy sessions to get him to a level where most of his speech was understandable. DD on the other hand was weaned at 5 months and had only a very minor speech problem, she couldn't say c or g or th. So I wouldn't worry, I don't think it has that much impact.

Report
neenztwinz · 05/12/2008 13:56

No I can't see how weaning a few weeks either way could seriously affect speech. They just say these things to worry us.

LOL at pooing in the Bumbo Essie - can't believe you had that with cloth nappies!

I have just given some of my house a good clean and it really needed - it was quite atrocious. Need to spend less time on MN and Facebook and more on cleaning!

Hahaha, the Bumbo was the equivalent of squeezing a toothpaste tube. Only a rubber suit would have stopped the spread of that one!

Well, I can report that this baby rice is nothing short of miraculous. Iestyn had his first baby rice at 11, and at 12.30 he rolled over back to front for the first time ever!

How on earth can weaning affect speech? I'm willing to be Iestyn will be one of the last to start speaking on this thread because he's going to be bilingual.

London ladies - I'm desperate for a meet up because I've been alone in the house for 2 days and going a bit mental with it. (Weepy by the evening and resentful of Tim then...)
I'm only around next week though, then a week in Wales, and then it's Christmas. (God!)

Well I didnt need to worry Oli slept through. Still sleepy and chocked with the cold.

Weaning and speach obviously wont affect every child, but apparently there is a window of opertunity that can be missed. Weaning helps with the forms the mouth makes to enable you to make certain sounds. Im sure it sounds stupid to alot of you, but hohum, maybe the several medical proffessionals looking after Olivia are talking out a hole in there ass!

sybiltherednosedreindeer · 05/12/2008 14:35

Josey I'm sorry if it sounded as if I were undermining your speech/weaning advice, I didn't intend it that way, merely giving my experience. Sorry though if it sounded that way!
