Not sure about the bm thing Ali - i think BM does change after six months but I also think if bm was all a baby was drinking it would be just fine. I take what Drs say with a pinch of salt (and even more so friends of Drs) cos they are not all experts in every area and you just don't know what they are basing their comments on - they could have just been told that by their own HV. It is worth more investigation tho.

Where you off to?

Forgot to post this link before - we got some pencil potraits done and they are really good www.portraitsinpencilbybobby.com/

neenztwinz · 18/12/2008 09:34

Portraits of the babies!

spongebrainbigpants · 18/12/2008 09:44

Ali, PMSL that dh works for Nuts magazine - he's an IT consultant and at the time of this delightful present was working for THE software company! You wouldn't think one of those nerds would come up with something so racey!! Makes you wonder what was going through his mind when he bought it - yuck!

Think that your friend has def got the wrong end of the stick about bf getting less nutritious - during the war babies weren't weaned onto solids until nine months or later and survived on just bm. But I'm no expert!

spongebrainbigpants · 18/12/2008 10:01

Oh god, just had a really horrible experience and need some cyber hand holding .

Was giving Alex his breakfast - he had 4ozs of milk from his bottle, then some porridge and then was just playing with some pear. I'm trying not to sit and stare at him now, so just turned my head for a few seconds to drink my tea and he started vomming everywhere. Not just the usual baby-dribble sick, but proper retching vomiting . It was horrendous. Such a shock, he's never done that before. Brought up all his milk and the small amounts of breakfast he's actually ingested.

The other thing that has really upset me is my reaction - I'm an emetophobic and have always been concerned about how I'd cope with kids being sick. I could never handle it at work but thought my mothering instincts would over-ride it - they didn't . I thought I was going to be sick too and I'm sat in the lounge trying to summon up the courage to clean it up at the moment. How am I going to cope when it's proper sick?

Anyway, Alex seems fine now and is practising his crawling in front of me, but what should I do about feeding him today. Do you think a bit of pear caught his throat and made him sick or do you think I should avoid solids for the rest of the day. It's really shattered my confidence .

Sorry about ego-centric post, needed to get it off my chest.

spongebrainbigpants · 18/12/2008 11:40

Where is everybody?

I've cleared up, and Alex is now sleeping. He's been asleep for an hour which is unheard of for him - poor little mite. Hope he hasn't got "the bug", but he seems fine otherwise.

Hope you're all having a good day!

hedgeHogfather · 18/12/2008 11:47

only going to be able to Lurk until after christmas probably as at my parents for the next couple of weeks and their is lots planned. Hope everyone has a fab christmas with their little ones.

Will try and post but make no promises

jingleallnewjinglebells · 18/12/2008 11:49

Thanks all for the wise words -and I'll get looking on MSE!

libra sorry to hear about your job, sending you good luck for finding something else relatively soon. Will you get a decent payout to help?

Interesting reading about baby shrieks! We spent a few days with my nephew (2yo) last week who has a very high pitched shriek when excited. A, who had never done this before, has now perfected his imitation! Amazing how quick they pick things up!

Well I found out why I'm feeling rubbish - I've got tonsillitis! And to top things off, A was awake every hour last night. Luckily DH is off work today to help out

neenz/essie/rolf - would love to join you if you're meeting up again in the Chester area any time soon

DreamingOfMincePiesInAustria · 18/12/2008 11:51

Sponge - maybe stay clear of solids for the rest of today just in case it's a bug or try again this evening a little something when your dh is around to clear up the sick.

Amberc · 18/12/2008 11:56

Non salted butter tastes rubbish.

Amberc · 18/12/2008 12:08

Sponge apparently babies can vom a lot during weaning as they get a bit of solid food in their mouths and the gag reflex kicks in. Most of the time they spit it our or swallow it but sometimes that gag reflex causes them to vomit. It's very common. I know what you mean about sick - I am not good with it either but not phobic.

Amberc · 18/12/2008 12:15

News from me - well Luke is still not keen on food but we are slowly getting there. Ali yes he does like toast. Mouths it sucks off the butter and then lets it fall to the floor. I think some might get eaten but mostly not. He did eat some Organix fruit baby cereal yesterday - it tastes gorgeous! I ate the rest of it and could have had a whole bowl. Tried veggies but he cried when faced with a boiled new potatoe, He also likes baby bell - am I allowed to give him these? I try and give him something 3 times a day now - trying to break him down!!!

Now my best news is that Luke has slept until 7 three times in a row!! Gone to sleep at 7, woken him for an 11 feed and then he grumbles a bit at 5 (we give him a dummy) and then through to 7am. It's a miracle that I put entirely down to the switch to follow on milk. God bless follow on milk! It has double iron levels in it those of you who do formula feeding. I actually have a stinking cold but feel better than I have in such a long time.

Good luck little Olivia for your operation!

PS I waited till 6 months to wean Luke properly - can't remember who mentioned it but weaning is a pain in the arse so leave it as long as possible!!

Amberc · 18/12/2008 12:16

PS re the solids thing, yesterday I found a complete chunk of baby bell cheese in Luke's mouth about an hour after he had eaten it and had to fish it out! Obviously he had no idea what to do to process it in his mouth - silly arse!

jingleallnewjinglebells · 18/12/2008 12:38

don't know how that happened - must have forgotten to read the last page before I posted!

sponge poor you, what a shock! Don't know how I'll cope either when it happens. I guess maybe he just gagged or something and vomitting was maybe from shock? At least he's not bothered by it which is good. Good for you for managing to clean it up!

iron levels - what I thought was that the iron levels they're born with start to deplete after 6 months

Sending thoughts to josey & olivia

amber - where did that come from?!

jingleallnewjinglebells · 18/12/2008 12:41

cross posted amber
on the sleeps, but that's great news!

neenztwinz · 18/12/2008 13:06

Sponge, sympathies! Sounds awful, and maybe a bit more than just a gag reflex - there is that horrible vomiting bug going round. Have you rung NHS Direct? They will be able to advise. My friend's LO had it and couldn't even keep milk down . Just try him with a bit of food later and see how he goes on. Sorry you had such a trauma.

Amber, interesting thoughts on non-salted butter . Congrats on Luke sleeping longer - I think follow-on milk is supposed to be 'satisfying', Esther loves it.

Allnew, where do you live then? Didn't know you were in the north west. Would love to meet up.

Iron levels do deplete after 6mths and most nutritionists say you have to give iron-rich foods (brocolli, lentils etc) after 6mths but BM still has some iron in which is easily absorbed. I think it is accepted that babies do need some food after 6mths (ie that BM is not enough) but if they didn't have any food they would survive on bm, may not be optimally nourished tho.

hollyivypoppy34 · 18/12/2008 13:20

amber good news re the sleeping, food progress..and agree not slated butter looks/tastes like sick

sponge agree with neenz loads of bugs around but rubbish for you. but giggled abotu your dh's present...

some progress in that edie is keen on melon/mango but going to hang off on 3 meals as can't face the pain given the lack of progress on just one. I've no idea re the iron thing (libra?) -and libra i'm sorry about your job

edie very frightened and cried this morning as had nct girls over and one of their babies is very noisy and shrieky... am now worried mum that she will be shy girl (although this baby is a vocal little miss bless her).

sorry brief post as typing over sleeping baby head - we're regressing re sleeping alone in the daytime here...

sybiltherednosedreindeer · 18/12/2008 13:40

Jamie has horrible snotty cold and has refused all solids for two days (sigh). Just as I thought we were staring to get somewhere, he is now crying as soon as I put the bib on.

Sponge, sorry to hear about the sick, hopefully a one off. My oldest had a really strong gag reflex and a weak valve which meant he was sick with food alot. Once a day at least for about two years. Being sick made his valve even weaker and he learnt to gag even more easily, it was a bit of a vicious cycle really. This is another reason why I daren't do blw, as I am terrifed of Jamie doing the same and panic at gagging.

sybiltherednosedreindeer · 18/12/2008 13:45

Should say though, that this is obviously not a common thing and I wouldn't worry about it happening to you!

FiveGoMadInDorset · 18/12/2008 14:30

Libra sorry about the job will email you, if you are worried then you could try follow on milk as that has extra iron in I think.

sponge there is an emetaphobic support thread on here, you are not alone and huge sympathies for you.

Amber yes unsalted butter is not as good but better that then making Luke ill, also just watch the amount of cheese that you give him as that is quite high in salt.

Josey thinking of you today.

AH what are you thinking of, moving just before christmas are you mad

Essie welcome back and hope you feel better soon

Sorry if i have missed anyone.

Well saw GP, have to have S weighed every week by HV, so have to run the gauntlet and hope I get the nice one, who has ben checking with Doctors and keeps phoning me up to check for details, has no interest in food, not a lot more interest in milk and throws it up. I had to get a stool sample from him today, yuk, The nice HV thinks it could be just a very bad case of reflux, she has just had one boy in her care who has finally stopped at 18 months so only another year to go. Have to stick with the Gavsicon and soya formula.

Also Edie is virtually potty trained, no accidents at nursery today and none at home for 3 days. Still in nappies at night but I think we are there.

sybiltherednosedreindeer · 18/12/2008 14:55

5gomad - glad to hear they are taking you seriously and have a plan of action. Am I right in thinking you are on soya because of lactose intolerance? A good friend of mine, her daughter was allergic to dairy but also intolerant of soya, apparently it is quiote comon to have a reaction to both and she had rice milk. I'm sure you have thought of this, but just wanted to mention it as you say he is still being sick on milk. Hugs to you, cleaning up sick is soul-destroying I know.

spongebrainbigpants · 18/12/2008 15:52

Hi guys, thanks for all the sympathy - Alex had a two hour nap after his sickness which is unheard of for him. However, he woke up full of the joys of spring so stupid mummy took him into our work Christmas lunch. He was a star - smiling and laughing and being passed round for cuddles. Then he promptly threw up all over one of my colleagues - while we cleaned up, another one held him and then he threw up all over her .

So it's definitely a bug. No better place to be than a room full of children's nurses though .

So we're back home, he's cleaned up and I'm left with a dilemma as to what to feed him - no solids, I mean do I give him milk or water? He seems so well in himself, he's back on the floor practising his crawling again, but has kept nothing down for nearly 12 hours, poor little boy.

5gomad, thank you, I will go and find the support thread. I really am very worried about how I'm going to cope .

Hope S improves soon and well done Edie!

Thinking of Oli and josey.

Sorry to miss anyone else, oh, Amber great news on the sleeping, also very !

abdnhikinginawinterwonderland · 18/12/2008 16:20

Essie would definitely love a meetup if you make it to Aberdeen! Why is the dept scandalous? And I used medised with DS1 - so don't feel guilty!

libralady hugs - that's bad news about the redundancy. I hope something infinitely better pops up.... Also with respect to weaning, we gave DS1 a vitamin supplement from 6 months which I think solves the problem of iron levels diminishing - I need to go buy a bottle for Fraser.

sponge I'd bet that was his gag reflex preventing him from choking. Fraser does that all the time (the vomiting) and it's really annoying. As for cleaning up the puke - if Alex is okay then surely if you wait a bit to clean up it doesn't matter? -Oops! just scrolled down and read your last post... ignore this!

Amber congrats on the sleeping! I'm

bitofasnowqueen · 18/12/2008 18:56

Evening all. It has just taken me about half an hour to log on to this page for some reason so no time to post. !

OP posts:
spongebrainbigpants · 18/12/2008 19:34

Well, took Alex to the doctor as he can't even hold down water - and he promptly threw up in the consulting room !

She has given him some dyrolite (sp?) and said to keep monitoring his fluid levels. Poor little man.

On a separate note, any knitters out there who like knitting toys, there's a new Alan Dart website, and especially for puree&peals, I found this:

Baby Pearl
