You are in the wars Inzi that is for sure. Sorry to hear about the fight. Take it easy today.

Stefka · 27/11/2008 08:25

Also if it helps any I did come across some horror stories the other way - of children who had died from measles or ended up deaf or blind. It's really not easy being a parent is it.

muppetgirl · 27/11/2008 10:06

Hi all, thanks so much for your opinion re the c-section xxxxx

Have to say I left Ollie's MMR till he was four as I would then know his personality. We had it done earlier this year in April/may and six weeks later he developed the rash, swollen glands, diahorrea (sp?)extreme tiredness and concentration problems. He hasn't been right since and has been re referred to the paediatrician again as his glands are still swollen (6 months now) and he his still extremely tired so much that school have asked him to reduce his hours as they think he is too tired to be at school. This may a total coincidence but when I told my osteopath about Ollie he said it sounded like his immune system was being battered by something that his body couldn't fight. When I said he'd had the MMR 6 weeks previously he said 'there you go' My Dr thinks there is no link at all and Ollie has a Glandular fever type virus. I am left feeling that I have done something awful to my son when I believed I thought what I was doing would be beneficial. I understand the MMR may be totally unconnected to these symptoms but due to the nature of the beast it's not even being considered yet the NHS website does list possible side effects and the above list of Ollie?s symptoms covers most of them. What it doesn?t say is how long these symptoms can go on for which means this long illness of Ollie's can be attributed to something else. I'm not looking to blame the MMR I just want everything to be considered so we can get the whole picture of what is wrong with Ollie and not to discount certain possibilities due to them being a political hot potato. We aren't going to get Henry MMR'd although I am happy he has all the others.

I really don't want to put anyone off and are desperately not trying to scare you but I do feel that some children will always have reactions to immunisations as it is possible to have reactions to any drugs we put in our bodies. I believe Ollie is one of the few that do and that the benefits of immunisations still outweigh the possible consequences, however, you always want your children to not be the ones who have the reactions.

Stefka · 27/11/2008 11:43

I can't bear to think about it now as it is too late.

Just to let you know my laptop is not well! Hasn't been for ages but I have not got it fixed because of money. I can't avoid it any longer though - I am amazed it's even letting me on just now. Taking it in to a shop this afternoon and hopefully they can fix it asap.

Also got a job interview on Monday.

muppetgirl · 27/11/2008 11:44

Fab news on the interview!!

FloriaTosca · 27/11/2008 12:24

Muppet;meant to celebrate with you your return to a centrally heated home (made me wonder how my grandparents survived with just coal fires when we had to suffer without our constant heat a few years ago)So sorry to hear Ollie is still not himself and it is easy to blame the mmr as it would have been one heck of a coincidence if it hasnt something to do with it ...just an unmedically trained thought..but in the dog world a lot of us with dogs with strong immune systems have stopped having annual boosters because the regular bombardment seems to be overloading their systems (I have Thanes leptospirosis booster given annually but the rest he only gets every other year)I wonder if something similar could have happened to Ollie?..if he has been exposed to one or more of the diseases and developed his own immunity without developing the symptoms could he be having an adverse reaction to getting a "booster"? It might be worth asking someone who actually knows anything if it is an explaination.

FloriaTosca · 27/11/2008 12:35

OOh Stefka! Good luck on Monday!

muppetgirl · 27/11/2008 12:43

Floria that is something of interest and I'll talk to the dr about it! I find as soon as I mention the MMR they cloud over and don't want to discuss it. I'm not looking for blame, I'm looking for an answers as to why Ollie is still not well. My friend's hubbie had shingles in Canada and they gave him ant-virals as a matter of course. (We don't in England apparently) This is something I'd never heard of (anti-virals that is!) and they boost your immune system so maybe that would also be worth investigating? Maybe by not having it he did develop his own immune system?

I have an excellent book 'Immunity foods for healthy kids' and he's eating tons and tons of fruit and veg but not much meat at the mo so I'm at least trying to actively do something about it in my own small way.

Rest doesn't help him and neither really does sleep. He sleeps 12 hrs per night yet is still exhausted.

I have also read an article saying that we don't yet know the full effects of so many immunisations at such a young agevon our health which is interesting.

muppetgirl · 27/11/2008 12:44

And having heating is FAB! x

HeinzSight · 27/11/2008 12:50

inzi, sorry to hear about your fight with DH , it's horrible when that happens. Do you normally kiss and make up quite quickly? Hope so.

Niamh had her MMR last month, she was a bit grizzly a few days after. She does still seem to have swollen lymph nodes in her neck. Am just keeping an eye on them for now. It's true though how we aren't given any advise as to how long the after affects can go on for.

Stefka, great news re the job interview. Keeping fingers crossed for you.

Muppetgirl, re c-section. I was VERY 'lucky' in that Niamh turned out to be breech, I was so happy! Basically, I was going to request a c-section anyway because both my boys were over 10lbs and after having DS2 I had awful problems with my bladder, this carried on for 5 years, it was a tough time. So the plan was, even if she had turned cephalic, I was still to have a section to protect my bladder. HTH

alicet · 27/11/2008 14:00

Muppet sorry to hear that Ollie is still not well. Floria makes an interesting point about him maybe having a mild version of one of the illnessers already. I don't know for sure if this could then cause a reaction but going by what I understand about immunity I would have thought that having the illness prior to the jab would have already made you immune and as such wouldn't be affected by a live vaccine being given to you as it would be the same in principle to you being exposed to the illness after having the vaccine. Have responded on your section thread too - good luck!

Stefka good luck with the job interview and good luck with getting your laptop fixed!

About MMR - we had Sam vaccinated and Adam gets his next week. Did the research as I am sure we all have. Basically there are complications of the jab like there are with any drug. But to me the risk of them getting a bad form of one of the diseases was a greater risk and one not worth taking so for me in the end it was a no brainer. A small thing that would have tipped the balance if I was wavering is that I do not know a single doctor who has not had their child vaccinated with MMR.

Can undersand muppet's rationale behind waiting until Ollie was 4 and she would know his personality although to me that meant 3 more years of risking exposure to the illnesses and for me that wasn't a risk I wanted to take (not having a pop muppet - we all have to weigh up the evidence and make our own choices - yours is a very valid one but not for me). Inzi I don't understand the reasoning behind waiting until she is 18 months though? Have you been advised this? Am just curious to hear what you have to say as personally I don't really think the extra 5 months would make that much difference.

Inzi sorry to hear you and dh have been fighting again xxx

SOrry forgotten everything else as had to go up and put Sam on the toilet while posting this and have forgotten what you all wrote. Also need to rush as I have been here much longer than I meant and I have loads I want to do while the boys sleep (or rather while Adam sleeps and Sam sings to himself in bed ) Will try and post later....

LOL @ wet nappy splatting on DH's head inzi

muppetgirl · 27/11/2008 18:56

Inzi!!!! That was so funny. I had a lovely mental picture of a wet nappy hitting a confused husband's head!!!

Thanks Alice for the c-section input. I'm going to take a look at your birth plan. I said to dh last night that I felt that I wasn't listened too last time and are a bit nervous about really insisting. Dh will come with me to any apps so that's fab.

Re the MMR thing it's tough isn't it? I felt comfortable with the decision we'd made about Ollie and the MMR yet now I feel we did the wrong thing...

I am sat listening to Henry sing and giggle in his cot -he's very simple that one!

muppetgirl · 27/11/2008 19:21

Alice those birth plans are fab thank you xxx

strawberrylace · 27/11/2008 22:13

Hello everyone
Just a short post as we are going to my sister's for the weekend tomorrow, and I should be packing.
Muppet - hoorah for the heating, sorry that Ollie's not feeling well still. I had a c-section, and it really didn't take long at all before I was back on my feet and doing things - though i did make DH do all the lifting for a long while, and insisted he pushed the trolley round tescos which is pretty much his idea of hell
LES - great news about Grant?s job
Stefka - good luck with your interview
Inzi - hope you've made up with your DH now, LOL at the wet nappy at head....

Re: MMR - I have booked Olly's for next friday. I think it's the right thing to do, but can appreciate what people are saying about not being quite sure. I think there are so many things that we have dilemmas about as parents - eating, sleeping, developing etc. As soon as you get over one hurdle, another one comes along. My current worry is wondering if I pay DS enough attention cos I work 3 days a week and they are long days so I only see him just before he goes to bed, and whether this will affect his development....

LisaLessLumpy · 28/11/2008 08:37

Les - Great news
Muppet - I posted on your thread, hope you get to the bottom of Ollies sickness soon. xx
Stefka - WooHoo Congrats on the interview, all digits crossed for you for this one

Regarding MMR - I have had both Sam and Ben done with no second thoughts. I didn't read any bumf as I didn't want to scare myself silly. Ben had his two weeks ago and has been fine, no problems other than a bit of a temp and miserablness (is that a word?) at day 8 and 9 after the jab. Sam did have a reaction though he came out in a measles rash all over, I think I have pictures if anyone wanted a squizz

Ben is being a cheeky monkey, he doesn't listen to me at all he laughs if you tell him no and tries to hug and kiss you instead I think he is going to be a master manipulator Yesterday he was upstairs whilst I was dealing with the shopping that had been delivered, he was very very quiet.... when I went up he had shredded half a roll of toilet roll all over my bedroom and bathroom floor I wouldn't change him though, he is a proper little character
