Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

He gets some phone time. I write letters, but he is rubbish, and email access can be sporadic at best, depending where he goes. Last time he was away he got to a computer three times in four months. But the base he was at in Iraq last time was pretty lo-tech, plus they were getting rocketed fairly frequently, so I preferred him not to run back and forth to the computer huts to much. Hopefully this time he'll get more email access. He's quite excited as he's never been to Afghanistan before, says it's better than going to Basra again. Hoorah for the RAF...

Dontpanic · 21/01/2009 08:05

immune system stuff, only things i can think of are lots of vit c, maybe a probiotic capsule which you can sprinkle over food, and colloidal silver - I'm using that on LO from next weekend to build him up for a couple of weeks before the flight, it's in a 15ml spray bottle, and he loves having it sprayed in his mouth! You can get 100 or 200ml sizes as well but it's darned expensive (highernature website).

LeoM, that's a radical namechange! But he didn't have time to go on hols and had a heart attack, how does that fit with the old HQ?

ff- wow, I don't think I could ever manage that lifestyle with DH swanning off into action (laughable though the thought is, knowing him!), I'd be too much of a nervous wreck. Still, I guess you get accustomed to it, if not "comfortable" with the situation. Hope he manages to keep in touch this time.

timmyinatizzy · 21/01/2009 09:28

This is it. My last day of being a stay at home mum. Back to work properly from tomorrow . Fingers crossed DH is in line for a pay rise which may mean that I could possibly do 3 days a week. But I'm not getting my hopes up too much yet. Have a nice day everyone.

LeoMcGarry · 21/01/2009 09:41

Timmy - a friend of mine went back full time last week. She said that the first day was horrid but by the end of the week she was enjoying work, her DD was enjoying nursery and she felt so much better. I'm sure you'll settle down quickly. Have you got something nice planned for your last day of freedom?

Dontpanic - my new name is a warning lesson to me on how not to run my life

FfFf - my dad was in the RAF but before I was born. I think anyone in the services is wonderful, but even more so their families who have to deal with all the absences etc. You and Ff will be in my thoughts as and when he goes (and I'll be hoping he has decent internet access too!). I'm glad he'll be around for her birthday though

DS was v impressed with the inauguration yesterday. Played his xylophone when Aretha was singing, and danced madly when they played Hail to the Chief!

timmyinatizzy · 21/01/2009 09:55

Leo - No not really. Just enjoying some me time. Going to get Luke early from nursery to get him weighed (not done it since November although I did weigh him on the Wii fit board and it said he was 1 stone 5 lbs ) and then go to the our Sing and Sign class that I would of loved to be able to carry on but cannot as it is during the day.

littleducks · 21/01/2009 19:26

timmy- long time no 'see' good luck tomorrow

oh and to any mums secretly cursing themselves that the lo is always ill due to being in nursery, fret not we still have not cleared the sickness from the house despite my sahm-dom which is more like 'doom' atm

ds is constipated, what can i give him? dd always had the total opposite issue so am at a loss.....

timmyinatizzy · 21/01/2009 20:25

Hi Little Ducks . I'm going to have more time to come on here when I'm back at work than when I'm at home

For the constipation have you tried prunes? A couple of mums from my post-natal group swear by them. Chop them up small and hide them in his favourite food. It seems to work for them.

Well we enjoyed our last sign and sign class. The lady who runs it is hopeful that she can start a Saturday class that we could probably attend. I'm going to miss it , and I know Luke will too.

Got him weighed today, 17lb 12oz, he's now dropped under the 9th Centile, but we're not too bothered about that as he is so mobile and loves his food. Think he may just be small all over.

HQ - How is your DS today?

monthlymayhem · 21/01/2009 22:12

Timmy - good luck for tomorrow! I start back work full time on the 2nd Feb, so next week is my last week as a SAHM. I'm lucky that I can work from home a couple of days a week, but even so it is a really daunting prospect. Not just because I'll miss ds, but also because I'm not sure if I've still got a functioning 'work brain'

Hello to everyone else, hope all LOs with sickness/injuries are getting better. We managed to jinx ds by commenting on how well he'd been sleeping recently and not had a cold for a few weeks.....woke up this morning with stinking cold, sore teeth, and was up 6 times last night....has been up 3 times so far tonight after going down at 7.30pm Remind me to keep my mouth shut next time!!

LeoMcGarry · 21/01/2009 23:51

timmy - good luck tomorrow! DS is good thanks - starting to put weight on his foot albeit gingerly. Not encouraging too much of that though as want him to heal good and proper!

LD - definitely prunes. Fortunately my DS loves them so has them most days anyway. Soak in boiling water overnight so they get really juicy then he can eat them as they are tearing bits off with his gums, so don't even need chopping.

If they need to be hidden and you eat meat, then Nigella has a delish beef stew which is very simple, and includes loads of prunes to make gravy lush. DS loves it and is v easy to eat with hands (you BLW, right?) Soak about 100g prunes overnight in boiling water (enough to cover plus a bit extra). Coat about 500g stewing steak in a mix of half flour, half mustard powder and fry off briefly until lightly browned. Chop an onion smallish and cut 2-3 carrots into batons. Put veggies, beef, prunes in casserole. Make up 350ml liquid using water from prunes topping up with beer (this is N's recipe, if you prefer stock would be just fine). Pour on beef and veggies. Cook in oven at about 150C for 2.5-3 hours until tender (probs need to mush prunes into gravy, may want to add a touch more water). Great with mash and green veg, freezes well.

Dontpanic · 22/01/2009 22:19

How'd it go Timmy?

And in case I forget between now and then, happy birthday Merry for Saturday.

merryberry · 23/01/2009 08:04

ta dp. ooh, sounds like you're my dp now...laugh

anyhow, i was just posting on fb...fromm tomorrow i'll be closer to 60 than to 20, which is a bit of a thing to comprehend.

am going away for the night to stay in a london hotel with a pool i like and power plates, which i want to try, see how the arthritis takes to them, as iu;m having proper trouble finding exercise i can do consistently. even walking more than 4 miles a day sends my feet off . si, i plan to sit still a lot as well, and get hot drinks which i start to drink while still hot. i am goiung to drink alone in front of the box and not have to prep anything for hte next day! well, you know, the non-kiddie works, incl b'fast in bed with the paper, and going back to sleep again...

wearehipsandmakers · 23/01/2009 09:53

ooh mb, where are you staying? I've negotiated a weekend away ALL BY MYSELF to spend in a hotel reading all the books I haven't got around to yet. And yes, waking up by myself w/o DS kicking me and asking for stories and/or escorting to the toilet. And yes, to drink a hot drink while hot and have a wee in private and to eat what I want for lunch when I want to eat it. (and probably drink wine while watching TV but I do that anyway.)
London is only an hour away on the train so I can leave the house by 5.15 on Friday and not be back till Sunday teatime. The problem is I don't know where to stay in London- I want somewhere where I can eat I think rather than braving a restaurant on my own on Saturday night. And I have to pay for this indulgent hedonistic weekend out of my own money so it can't be too expensive. I need to save my cash for Liberty's. .
It is snowing now, when will this winter end???

merryberry · 23/01/2009 14:08

I'm staying at a jury's hotel off marylebone high street, very quiet, newly refurbed. i chose there because it's on top of my old health club and i like the little pool and spa/gym bits. is basically 5 mins walk to selfridges, 20 mins to liberty. dh has booked me an exec room at £134 incl continental breakfast. you can get rooms for 99 quid at the w/e, but they are quite pokey, basically all bed and a chair. if you think it's a stretch, tell yourself it is one of the hotels/locations which is worth it in london, quiet and with the pool!

there's a wagamama and zizzi pizza house 5 mins away as well, which are standard cheap enough eats good for eating onyour own, or there's various deli's and a waitrose on the high street to take out back to the hotel. i think the hotel restaurant and room service itself is a bit overpriced, from what i recall, but really there are great places just behind it!

10 minutes north of it is regent;s park for a good walk.

merryberry · 23/01/2009 14:11

and i'll come have a bite with you on the sat night if you fancy it, and i'm free, no worries if not! i could just be your solo-mum beard!

CricketsMum · 24/01/2009 12:14

a weekend in a hotel alone sounds blissful!!!! Enjoy merry!

We have another tooth here - one of her top ones (and another pending)... she now grinds top & bottom together - horrid noise!

Have had my sister & niece here all week which has been fab, tho not sure that i could cope with 2 babies at once on a permanent basis!!! bad enough whenthe child:adult ratio is 1:1!!My niece (7 weeks) sleeps 11 hours a night! unbelivable.

hope everyone is having a good w/e.

LeoMcGarry · 25/01/2009 11:39

V of the hotels alone, although have no right to be as off on holiday to lovely hotels later today. Going to South Africa for a couple of weeks Would be v excited but actually v apprehensive as have v grumpy, teething baby to deal with on a 12 hour flight. Eeek!

Met my 3 day old nephew yesterday. DS was 9lb and seemed huge; DN was 9lb5 yet seemed tiny! I'm used to my 9mo now but still think of him as a little baby although to my 5yo nephew he is actually "a little toddler who can't walk yet"

Hope you all have a good couple of weeks, enjoy the hotels mb and weare, enjoy LA dontpanic, and hope everyone else is spared sleepless, teething, ill babies as much as possible.

Dontpanic · 25/01/2009 20:00

LO took a few steps tonight with his stroller thingy !

turtle23 · 25/01/2009 20:11

Speaking of steps...is it six weeks from proper walking you're meant to wait before getting proper shoes fitted? DS is now RUNNING and I would very much like to take him outside to do so. Can't remember when he started walking, but it must be nearly six weeks now. Scary.

Dontpanic · 25/01/2009 21:01

Turtle, hello! What's the latest with the bf?
No idea on the shoes, I was just going to go for something like schoo shoes so Lo's feet don't get too cramped?

turtle23 · 26/01/2009 05:55

The latest with the BF is that I am just rubbish. I am physically incapable of stopping. Have been trying to find someone to go on holiday with me (w/o P) so I have no choice.

spugs · 26/01/2009 16:51

Turtle - if you want to take him outside then go to clarkes there first shoes are really good. izzy is now running up and down with the pushy walker thing and can stand up byherself (wobbles lots). im dreading the cost of shoes for 3 children though!!!

Dontpanic · 26/01/2009 20:26

Turtle, you're not rubbish! You're obviously very good at it or P wouldn't want to keep going. He's just being a typical bloke and wanting it on tap
Hope you find someone to go on hol with, am v jealous as we're only doing a hotel by the airport in LA and (whispers) going to a Doctor Who convention. I hope to get a bit of sun each day by the open air pool. No such thing as a spa, sigh.
