wish i had the balls to go on this thread about teacher hitting pupils with school equipment and post my worries for the school equipment.

must get out more.

Rubbish start to new year here: DS being difficult about weaning so now having to do some long drawn out process involving him being given a cup of formula to play with, sip, turn his nose up at as if it is poison and then throw around the room in the hope he might eventually drink it. Anybody would think he had been breastfed exclusively, without even any ebm, but this behaviour is from the boy who was mix fed with bottles from 2 weeks old until about 3 weeks ago...

Then we got home from a weekend away last night to find out our house had been burgled Fortunately, if that isn't too strange a word to use in this context, nothing of real value was taken. Only a couple of tvs, an ipod, my mobile and a camera. No personal papers, nor the computer with wedding and baby photos, and not the passports (first thing to be checked in the HQ household!). For the first time, I'm thankful that my DH is not the sort of guy who goes in for buying me expensive diamond-encrusted presents... The Met have been surprisingly efficient and helpful, and our poor locksmith deserves a medal for repairing our door at midnight in freezing temperatures.

Sigh. I'm off to eat leftover Christmas pud and console myself. If I don't return it's because the pud should have been thrown out 10 days ago and I've poisoned myself (bad luck coming in 3s etc.)

Toodle pip

fitnfestiveone · 05/01/2009 21:55

oh HQ, that's a horrible thing to happen, but I'm right there with you on the babyphotos ...

MarchNowFebMum · 06/01/2009 02:44

HQ so sorry! You sound very calm and balanced about it. Enjoy the pud.

Jet lag has set in at the mnfm household - baby wakes at midnight each night for crying session, which wakes me and sets off my lag for a couple hours, even after she goes back down. Did give me a chance to catch up on our board though! Happy new year to everyone and extra love to those with unhelpful dh, in laws and non sleeping babies.

Someone asked aboout formula and food in the US airports - almost impossible to find and I would suggest taking a good amount of formula powder from here bc it's v different over there. I ran out (did not account for dropping bf while there! am happy about it, though, seemed natural break even though I had one year in my mind) and she hated everything I could find there. Was in a bit of a panic as I had dried up so had to give her cow's milk (mixed with corn syrup - apparently old mother's trick from my aunt. feel a little weird about the syrup but only thing she would take) until DH showed up with HIPP supplies!

Ff (others look away) my dd is 19 Feb so same age and sleeps similar times to your dd, I think 12-15 hours in 24 is acceptable for this age group. hq gina ford says 9-12 months is the time to introduce milk beaker at 2:30 rather than breast or bottle. I don't do her contented baby business but I have been following her feeding routine. I am doing beaker at 7/breakfast and bottle at 2:30 and 7 (water at lunch). But I am going to start doing beaker at 2:30 shortly. Not sure when they drop this entirely (haven;t read that far), but as ilgb says i thik they need something - snack, etc - at 2:30 for quite some time.

OK, need to get back to bed so a bit of crap tv and then I'll try this sleeping thing again!

Oh HQ, that is truly hideous. Big hugs!
I am not going to post on here or a while. I am swimming in issues. You can still find me on MN if you need me, will be back soon.

noolia · 06/01/2009 08:50

Hello all, I haven't been on here for ages, sorry to read about all the tough times some are having.
DD had chicken pox over christmas - one spot and she felt fine, but we did have to miss lots of things. Her first tooth came through yesterday - she's 10 months! She can do a couple of very tottery steps now but is still feeding rather alot in the night! It's so damn icy here that I daren't drive along the twisty lanes to playgroup, cabin fever may develop!

MarchNowFebMum · 06/01/2009 10:18

we also got our two front teeth for christmas - how often are you all brushing the teeth? have nifty baby brush and weleda paste but haven't started yet...

MNFM - We aim for a tooth brushing every night, but I'm not sure how effective I am at it. Ff loves it, but there is so much giggling and brush-gnawing that I don't think a huge amount of cleaning takes place. Still, I think it is more about establishing a habit at this age. (Or that's what I am telling myself, anyway...)

First steps using the vtech walker this afternoon. I was a bit cautious, since being up on her feet is still very new, so was holding lightly onto her dungaree straps, but no such concerns from Ff, who thought it was all hilarious.

I know what you mean about being trapped in because of icy lanes, haven't dares take the car out for days. But, we are very lucky to have gorgeous countryside around, and yesterday got all bundled up and took the dogs out in the snow. Ff is still (just) small enough to go in the bushbaby, facing outwards, so was giggling away, trying to grab the snow flakes with her bulky mitten clad paws, while Girldog ate as much snow as she could and Boydog (most feminine rottie in the world) tiptoed about looking a but worried about getting his fur wet.

Have to go...am meant to be searching the net for something to do with a pheasant and the contents of this week's veg box. Feel like I am on Ready Steady Cook.

Hope you're all tucked up in the warm.

HQ, that is awful, I'm so sorry. But at least you weren't at home. My friend only realised she was being burgled when they opened her bedroom door at three in the morning. (This is probably of no comfort at all to you, sorry.)

FfreckleFface · 06/01/2009 15:30

Sorry for double post. REalised I had left out message to HQ, thought I had stopped it, but apparently not...

HolidaysQueen · 06/01/2009 15:51

Ff - yep, I was very grateful not to have been in the house. And in some ways, being burgled feels a bit less horrid than if I had had my bag snatched. The invasion of our home isn't nice, but at least they didn't mess anything up or take anything personal. So it all feels slightly more removed from me IYSWIM than if I had come face to face with them Anyway, we're doing fine and now have an excuse to buy an exciting new tv

Re pheasant, I had a lovely stew in a pub this weekend - pheasant, onion, celery, carrot and streaky bacon in a dark gravy. It was fabulous with mashed spuds, and a real winter warmer.

turtle23 · 06/01/2009 16:21

re teeth brushing am not much help as we have been doing it twice a day since he was 15 weeks(when 1 and 2 appeared.) He loves it and just stands with his mouth wide open. I think he is a bit odd in this respect though. We are trying for tooth 9 and 10 and he looks very strangely grown up with his big toothy grin!

HolidaysQueen · 06/01/2009 19:02

My DS enjoys having his teeth cleaned too - but he is particularly obsessed with putting things in his mouth, to the extent that mums with babies of a similar age comment on it! He only has his two bottom ones (although bizarrely the fangs are looking imminent - I'm going to have a mini-Dracula ) and we clean them at least once a day with a smidgeon of toothpaste and just a normal child's toothbrush. We should be doing it twice a day but DH and I are both a bit rubbish at remembering

fitnfestiveone · 06/01/2009 21:22

bought the weleda toothpaste and a brush months ago but haven't used yet as LO doesn't like anything going in his mouth unless it's of his choosing and for him to chew/bite damn hard.

turtle, keep having the virtual{{{hugs}}}

merryberry · 07/01/2009 10:15

not doing brushing atm, as it would be baby torture while second top tooth works it way in and out and in and out of nasty swollen gum. poor boy.

Ewe · 07/01/2009 21:37

We're out the other side of chicken pox - it was awful, she had/has loads of spots and had a very high temp at times, glad it is over.

Sorry to hear about your burglary HQ, how horrid!

turtle - don't feel you have to steer clear because you're not posting happy things all of the time, we're here for everything and I am sure I speak for everyone when I say we'd like to support you as much here as we can - god knows you have done it for all of us at various times!

Has anyone been to baby loves disco? Feel like someone may have mentioned it but can't remember who as my brain has turned to mush since I became a parent! I am thinking of going to the one in Clapham on 18th Jan.

Toothbrushing happens sporadically but she seems to like chewing her toothbrush which is as good as it gets I think!

DD really good at standing unaided now and from time to time she takes a couple of steps and then falls but she prefers her walker and trolley full of bricks more than trying to do it on her own.

monthlymayhem · 08/01/2009 00:02

HQ - how horrible

On the toothbrushing, I try to brush LO's teeth twice a day, but usually forget and they get brushed once or sometimes not at all [bad mummy emoticon]

Got a bit of a shock when brushing yesterday though - LO has had two bottom teeth since five months and one top tooth came through at 7mths, but hadn't really been able to get a good look recently....he now has seven teeth with another near the surface! Not quite catching up with Turtles, but it certainly explains why he has been extra grizzly!

Went to baby swimming lessons for the first time today, and although trying to coordinate drying and changing a crawling, standing kamakaze baby was a bit of a nightmare, he loved the class and getting dunked under

3 and a half weeks till I go back to work now I know I've had a nice long time off but the thought of going back to a stressful job fulltime is starting to make me think that another dose of maternity leave might not be so Well ok, maybe that's going a it far

turtle23 · 08/01/2009 05:50

I feel I may be jinxing things if I say it out loud...
Pascal has slept through the night for two whole nights.

merryberry · 08/01/2009 06:57

oooh, i bet you feeel weird finaly getting some sleep! assuming you are getting some sleep!! took me a while to relearn how to with ds1

hq, how you doing? still feeling calm-ish about it? when i read your post i snarled 'oh the fuckers' on your behalf, which given i was on a mobile phone got me looks from the bus queue...

turtle23 · 08/01/2009 07:29

Managed to sleep 930-2 first night and 930-4 last night. Getting there!!!

HolidaysQueen · 08/01/2009 09:57

Turtle - hurray! We've had the last 3 nights straight through from our DS (which stands for dodgy sleeper in our house!) Isn't it just fab? We're trying hard to just enjoy each night rather than anticipate it continuing!

lol at mb in the bus queue Feeling fine about it - mainly because I'm worrying about other things like organising childcare! I'm back to work in 8 weeks and haven't sorted anything yet Probably need to get a nanny as it's not clear if I'll be back 3, 4 or 5 days yet, and if it's 5 days then I have a 3 month phase back, and I can't see any nursery around here being accommodating enough to fit in with that schedule. We can afford a nanny alone if we have to but not with much left over, so looking for a nanny share at the moment which is a bit scary as I need to find a family that we fit well with. Fortunately we live in London so lots more families about than if we were in the countryside or a smaller town.

Anyone done this and got any tips on how to make a nanny share work?

Ewe - we're thinking of going to a baby disco as our DS loves to dance (MisTeeq is his favourite!) I think it was PurlyQueen who went.

wearehipsandmakers · 08/01/2009 12:29

HQ GRRRR about the burglary. Hope you are still feeling fine.
Turtle- great news about the sleeping through(ish). It's amazing how quickly you can start to feel human again.
I am a little with DH this morning. He has a tendancy, when it's his turn to get up with DD to palm her off with a rice cake and the tellietubbies while he necks that all important first cup of coffee. This has always annoyed me a little but I try not to criticise his parenting decisions. I came down this morning and he'd given her a cadburys chocolate finger ffs. That's not right surely???
To judge by the state of her dressing gown, she did enjoy it tho'. Chocolately drool everywhere.

MarchNowFebMum · 08/01/2009 19:39

LOL at the cadbury. Sorry to laugh but it's a funny picture. Blokes!

HQ, check out nanny share to find other families. I have a share but not in the traditional definition. A family we know from NCT had a nanny lined up (she had been their cleaner for ten years) and we 'share' her time, only putting the babes together a couple times a month.

Woke up this AM to two more teeth so must get on this brushing thing!

PS Congrats to Pascal

FfreckleFface · 08/01/2009 21:31

Yay, Pascal! How are you feeling, Turtle?

Ff suddenly extremely mobile. Doesn't want to sit and play anymore, just wants to climb up ANYTHING that pauses for a second. The furniture, my leg, and earlier on I turned around to find her pulling herself up to standing using Girldog's left ear. Girldog, luckily, is a wonderfully child-friendly combination of extremely chilled and docile, but frighteningly tough, so doesn't mind this sort of bothering from Ff. Boydog has taken to moving away whenever she looks at over at him, so we are all treated to the quite funny spectacle of a fully grown rottweiler being chased around the room by a crawling baby.

Who is back/almost back to work now? I decided a few months ago that I was going to try and make a living freelancing rather than going back to my job in publishing, and (touch wood) I'm getting by at the moment. It is a bit of a pain having to start work when Ff goes to bed, and the temptation to mumsnet instead of work is very strong (clearly, as Bloke thinks he can't use the laptop at the moment because I am working , but I'm pretty happy with my decision so far. But...working on law books has sparked my interest, and I am seriously considering going back to uni to do a law conversion course in Sept, and then do an LPC next year. Unsure at the moment, but find the idea quite exciting.

merryberry · 08/01/2009 22:14

poor ds1 is like Boydog...
