babylove - Page 4 of 5 simply means that the next message will be on page 5 (which yours is! )

I'm not a good cook either. I bought Anabel Karmel's book and (though I've never read any others so can't really offer a considered view) has given me enough inspriation to go along with - some one else may know of another book? I also like the Heinz custard things - DS adores apple and Mango... He had carrots and chicken today(pureed courtsy of Mr Heinz) and loved that too - though I thought it tasted like cak

I think DS is actually frustrated.. He can see things / wants to move (actually is DESPERATE to move) but can't and I think that translates to frustration when I put him down, as he's worked out he is stuck wherever I put him. He is sitting happily on my knee as I type this (trying to help me type!!!) haha but wouldn't be happy if he couldn't see what was going on.

GoodDaysAndBadDays · 10/11/2008 16:35

babylove21 Here are a few ideas of what you could cook for DD. It's just some things I've done, no books....

Butternutsquash - my fave food!!! You can either boil it then mash it, but it's a bugger to peel. In fact you can't peel it as such, you have to cut it into 'rings' then with a small knife...cut the skin off. It's really faffy, I always get DH to do it (my bad shoulder does have advantages!). Boil it for about 20-30 mins, then it mashes really easily. It's very sweet and doesn't really need butter added. DD1 and DD2 both love it.

Plain old mash potato, or you can add green veg, broccoli, spinach, or carrots to the mash.

Mashed sweet potato. Peel and boil for 10-15 mins. mashes well and very sweet and also very good for you!!

I do mix veg batches, swede, carrot, potato, carrot etc, boil them all up then either mash or blend. I find blending quicker and easier to start them with, then go onto mashing, so they have more texture.

Parsnip mashed (boil and mash!!!). add a bit of butter if you like.

The trickiest and fiddliest bit is painstakingly spooning it into the icecube tray . It is a bit of a faff, but tbh, if you just set aside one evening to do it, then it's done and should last you weeks.

I got some brilliant rubber ice cube trays, so they're a bit bigger and it's easier to pop each cube out, IYSWIM. I got them on ebay, will have a quick look now....

GoodDaysAndBadDays · 10/11/2008 16:37

bit like this

Mine weren't as fun, but tbh, it doesn't really matter what shape it is as it all gets mixed up once heated.

Also, you can get it out straight from freezer and do it in mic for about 30-40 secs...instant!!

GoodDaysAndBadDays · 10/11/2008 16:40

Oh blimey, I'm all paranoid now....no offence to anyone who does use a book....I bought a book (won't name author) and it had 2 pages on 'how to make carrot puree'. I very quickly realised I was fine on my own ( I love cooking). It's fun making up ideas for them to eat, but also good to get ideas from the books as to what goes with what.

I think you can buy Bsquash ready chopped and peeled these days?

NSSA Can DS sit indep yet?? I found that made a massive difference to frustration, both my girls. I'm sure when he can sit on his own, which shouldn't be long, he'll be a lot happier.

notsoseriousanymore · 10/11/2008 16:49

hi GDABD - Don't be paranoid!!! I need to use a book because I'm terrible at cooking and would be stressing over having gotten something wrong if I did it myself. I am the goon that needs a two page instruction manual to make carrot puree!! . I got kicked out of Home Ec. class after about 3 weeks in senior school as it clashed with my flute and piano lessons. My dad decided that I didn't need to be able to cook (or sew - I got kicked out of that class too ).

Now, I can play the flute and piano quite well but they don't seem to be quite so handy when it comes to feeding DS!!

DS can sit up but not for an appreciable amount of time (I would need to stay close to him) I reckon today is because I went to a friend's house and she put him in her door bouncer (one of those lindam things) and he ADORED it... Now all he wants me to do is hold him up so he can 'walk' around the floor. I've popped in his play pen and he is NOT happy with me!! Best go and rescue him!!!

Flick How was your weekend?

NSSA x

GoodDaysAndBadDays · 10/11/2008 16:55

NSSA if it's any consolation, once both my girls started being able to sit, they very qucikly, within a matter of days, went from sitting on their own for a few seconds, to a couple of mins, to now half hour or so. I'm sure H will get there soon!!!

Can you email me your new address please? I can't find the other email you sent me and I found something today that I did for DS in the summer and I want to send it to you/him.

Thanks!

Oh, and fruit wise babylove, good combinations are mashed banana with a few raspberries, or...a really good one, mash banana with avocado...really good for them cos it's good fat.

Mango, plums, pears etc etc Just mash it all up!!!!

Mitchell81 · 10/11/2008 17:18

I also have a baby recipe book and one is something with watercress, unfortunetley I don't cook with watercress so pain old veges and fruit for my DC. You can also use a steamer if you have one?
And as Gooddays says takes abit of time but you only need to do it every couple/few weeks and much cheaper. If you looking for a recipe book there are lots of there and your HV might have some printed sheets for you.

This is going to sound very sad but we have done our christmas photo of the kids for the christmas cards it came out very well so now just need to write the ones for family abroad as postal service can take weeks.

DH is going away this weekend for 3 weeks so trying to get organised as will be on my own.

DS2 was better with mashed banana so maybe he just didn't like baby cereals to start with. He will be 6 months on wednesday.

notsoseriousanymore · 10/11/2008 17:44

WHere is he off to this time, MItchell? I have most of my pressies sorted now, it's easy this year as I have no bloody money to spend and DH will give me a hard time if he knows how much I usually spend, but haven't done a picture of DS in a christmas hat. Not sure I'll get around to it now, to be honest, I think I'll just end up buying some!!!

notsoseriousanymore · 10/11/2008 17:54

Isn't it funny (in an ironic, rather than funny way) how life changes when you have a baby?

I just read a story on the news about a baby being abandoned at a hospital... It's not the first time I've heard such a story, but today, my heart skipped a beat... I wonder what happened to that mother that made her want to / be able to do that...

It makes me realise that, while life is never perfect, I am so lucky to have the support network I have (and that includes you guys!)

You know, as GDABD's name says, we all have good days and bad days - DS has been a little terror today and I haven't done any of my jobs today (and have resorted t RFU milk again, as no time to make up bottles) but, goodness, I love him... And (to take a phrase from the Jermemy Kyle show - which of course, I NEVER watch ) at the end of the day, how lucky are we to have the lives we have, the support we have, the love we have... Makes me thankful for all the things we have to be thankful for..

Sorry, had a bad day today and just feeling a bit 'goodness, you have no idea' sort of moment!!

NSSA x

Denny185 · 10/11/2008 17:55

Hello GDABD, have fun with the Bean, really looking forward to Friday

NSSA, DD2 still isnt sitting properly and shes an April baby, try not to worry too much.

I made braised red cabbage/apple/onion for DD2 at the weekend - Delias one, just blended it, mmm yummy.

Mocat · 10/11/2008 18:32

Right, tried BLW and DS choked on almost everything!!! DH not amused. DS liked holding food and gumming it but as I said, choke, choke, choke. Blitzed it all after 5 mins and he ate that!! Hooray for hand blenders!!

Mitchell81 · 10/11/2008 20:13

NSSA back to Trinidad for afew days and then offshore from there. So nice sunny weather instead of the frezzing cold North sea.

Sorry you had a bad day, I always cry whenever I see anything to do with babies or children being hurt, abandoned, sick etc. The mummy instinct is always there and you think how could that happen and thank god it isn't happening to your child.

Denny Is red cabbage really nice? I don't ever buy it, bad memories of boiled stinky green cabbage at my nans.

Babylove Glad that the consultant has made a follow up apointment for you. Hope DD is still on the mend.
Your consultant seems nice, We had to go to the Hand clinic today for DD and he is such a nice man I always am happy after seeing him. It does make such a difference.

Mocat Oh dear about the choking, but glad he enjoyed it from a spoon.

MOnkeysmama Sympathy about the lack of sleep, we were going quite well, but I think a cold is on its way as DS2 seems to be watching more again.

Baiyu Hope everything is ok with your arm.

mumofkandj · 10/11/2008 20:22

Glad the blender helped Mocat! Thinking about the choking, I think blooming marvellous used to sell a mesh thing to put fruit in, so they can suck and gumm it but not get big lumps? I remember a freind of mine using one and liking it, if that helps...

I have 2 annabel carmel books, and TBH they're so similar I think she must rehash the recipes to get a new book out of them. Though I really liked making some of the stuff, I usually make her rice pudding recipe and I use the idea of cornflakes as a cripsy coating on anything I cooked for ages (we were avoiding wheat and egg with K). I found the little suggestions like putting cinnamon in fruit or chucking raisins or grapes in savoury dishes really helpful.

Earlier this afternoon when I was going all mushy remembering K being born (2.15 pm to be exact) J did her first commando crawl! Laptop died or I would have said straight away...as it was I only remembered to tell DH when he was OMG she's MOVING- and did the typical - 'oh that, yeah, she did that earlier...' in a calm tone of voice.
Anyhow, she saw a ball, wanted it and kicked legs (occasionally they helped) and wriggled and pulled herslef to it. Awwww. Next is the panic for all the destructables around the edge of the room, but right now its awww.

Bloody fridge freezer still isn't right. the men came to look at it while we had tea, but I'd turned it off in the hope I'd clean it (No such luck). So when they turned it back on again, it was making the NORMAL noises, not the weird ones, and getting cold, typical. They've said if it stops working within the next 24 hrs then its not worth fixing, but if they need to come back out within a month there's no extra call out charge. Now its done this, I don't think I can trust the bugger. We get half a lamb and an eighth of a cow delivered each year, and its nearly delivery time....I think we might have to get a new (bigger, shiny too!) Fridge freezer. But we'll still see what happens overnight.

thefortbuilder · 10/11/2008 20:49

hey everyone - gbabd it was a bit tongue in cheek about 12kg, but glad to have started a discussion!!! he will probably move across when he's around 10kg tbh

nssa how does next week sound now? i'm manic at the moment trying to do businessy things and next week would be good if that suits you - friday?

it apparently takes 10 tastes to accept a taste for a lo. we have gone the puree route with sam and he's loving it! he's actually having some ready mades (ella's kitchen and plum) and a lot of home made - for anyone interested i'll list it all down here:

ella's kitchen
apple and banana puree for breakfast (smooth)
strawberry and cream rice pudding (textured)
fish pie (textured)
chicken casserole and rice (textured)
beef stew and spuds (textured)

plum
lamb, sweet potato and carrot (stage 2, textured)
red cabbage, chicken and apple (stage 2, textured)

he also has homemade kind of lumpy-ish depending on how much we puree it! but quite thick as well mixes of:

sweet potato
normal potato
butternut squash (if you cut it into big segments you can roast it and then the skin comes off really easily, or buy ready prepared from M&S which is expensive)
parsnip
carrot
baby corn

i normally cut a mix of the above into similar sized chunks, and boil or steam for around 15/20 minutes, then strain, add a little of the cooking water back to it and use a hand blender to puree.

am starting to add some poached chicken to it as well

i used the icecube trays with ds1 and ds2 eats so much more so we are using the tommee tippee blue storage pots and filling those up and freezing them - we get through 2 pots of savoury in one meal though as well as some pureed fruit or rice pudding, or fromage frais! after saying he was eating 220g each meal, it's gone up to about 350 over the weekend each meal!!!

not much else to report here - sam is now sitting up well on his own - as gdabd said with hers, he went from sitting for a few seconds to a few minutes in a leap! he's been in a high chair for a few weeks now and doesn't slump over at all. we are using ds1's tripp trapp as he is now refusing to sit in it!

notsoseriousanymore · 10/11/2008 21:28

GOsh, talk about FML's - I think we are the only nice thread on MN!!!

I've managed to get into a huge argument, which even I'm not sure I agree with, but there are SUCH biased views (and some from MN'ers who I KNOW don't always hold such moralistic views!!)

I think I'm going to stick to this thread only!!!!

Eekk!!

GoodDaysAndBadDays · 10/11/2008 22:00

mitchell No need to be . I have bought a santa hat from Asda for DD2 to wear, and I am gonna try and get a 'Christmas' photo of the girls to make cards for immediate family and family who don't really see them, to see how beautiful they are .

flick LOL! I feel like a bit of a tit now, after thinking you might be serious....12kg in a baby car seat !!!!

When you want to move on from icecube trays, I find the avent milk storage pots a perfect size for individual meals, or any little tuppaware pots you can get from Tesco etc. I got some Tesco value ones, think they were about 29p each, and they are FAB!

Just been waxed within an inch of my life [pain emoticon]!!

Ummm, don't want to make you all incredibly but did I mention that Denny and I and the four of our mates are going away for the weekend with no children!!!!!!! Fri am til Sun pm.....Yipeeee Mcflippy!!! We are so frigging excited, I think it's just what I need right now....wish you could all come . we are staying in a 4 star hotel all courtesy of Tesco clubcard vouchers . CANNOT WAIT !!!!!

GoodDaysAndBadDays · 10/11/2008 22:01

How many times can I mention TESCO in one post

macaco · 10/11/2008 22:01

Can't write much..dinner nearly ready. I wasn't being funny about BLW, I think it's great fun, just that spoon feeding is fine too and that I don't find pureeing a hassle.
Bnut squash much easier to peel once roasted.

NSSA, what thread are you in a bunfight?

DS (7 and a half months) is nowhere near sitting unsupported but is desperately trying to crawl. Still think there are some teeth on the way.

oooh, there's dinner, must run.

love to all the FMLs!
xx

notsoseriousanymore · 10/11/2008 22:05

Have a lovely time LM

FWIW, I have a Maxi cosy Cabriofix and they are OK up to 13Kg... check here but it also says up to 12 months, but I am planning to keep DS in this Cabriofix up until a year.

Flick Next Friday would be great.

I might be really brave and bring DH's new car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Who am I kidding!! hahahaha!)

NSSA xx

GoodDaysAndBadDays · 10/11/2008 22:20

NSSA Please just delete that thread you are on and don't look at it again. FWIW, I'm afraid I don't agree with you (DH is a paramedic and has seen some horrific things ), BUT I don't like seeing you getting slated, and if it was me, I'd be getting upset by now, just leave it and try not to think about it. It's your decision. I have got so wound up in the past by things on MN, and I get cross with myself for letting it get to me. I'm aware that you are on your own, and I don't want you to dwell on it. Just leave it/them.

Hope you are OK.

LM, your fellow FML xxxxxxx

thefortbuilder · 11/11/2008 11:27

nssa hope you are ok and i do hate to see you getting slated on there. not sure if support would actually achieve much on that thread though.

i would just delete it and ignore if you can

not much else to say really here! lots to be getting on with

Mitchell81 · 11/11/2008 13:55

NSSA: hope you are ok I agree just delete the thread, hopefully no one else posts and then it can just be forgotten. Some people can be so nasty.

baiyu · 11/11/2008 14:58

Oh dear, I didn't mean 'guilt' so much as worrying if I should have gone down a different road as others were really enjoying BLW and then reading BLW sites (some of which are pretty anti-puree but I guess if they're promoting BLW then that's allowed!)and getting stressed. Not so much from MN and definitely not from this thread! It's all this unneccessary mummy worry. Though I'm with you all on the 'isn't life great aren't our LO's wonderful!' today. DS is 6 months today and he just amazes me every day. I met a friend today with a gorgeous LO of the same age but she has all these nasty stresses with ex-DP, no child support, denying paternity etc etc that's just horrible. Makes me feel very lucky in my life, stony broke but rich in all the things that matter.

gooddays enjoy your break! Gosh, Tesco clubcard points, I always just spend mine on the shopping, I need to look into the options here!

Hmm, big amazing Romanesco cabbage in my veg box today (looks like it's from space) - what will DS make of that? Hehe.

GoodDaysAndBadDays · 11/11/2008 15:52

OH baiyu you should never just spend them on shopping, they are worth four times as much on deals, so £10 is £40!!!

Saw the HV. She was lovely and has said she thinks I have mild PND .

Other than that, a good day

macaco · 11/11/2008 16:17

what is this awful thread of NSSA's? Do you need a FML to pile in there? Hope you haven't strayed into anything too horrible.
