thefortbuilder · 04/11/2008 20:11

wolverina have posted - fwiw my mum has parkinsons too although only just diagnosed and very very mild.

not much to say really here

hope everyone ok

mumofkandj · 04/11/2008 21:15

babylove glad your dd isn't too poorly, and hope you get sleep soon!

Welcome wme! Nice to have 'new faces' here.

I've got a question- not meaning to offend anyone, genuinely curious. Macaco got me thinking about what is extended breastfeeding with her post. I was thinking that 6 months was normal, a year a bit less so and, I guess I was thinking in this country that over 1 yr would be 'extended' breastfeeding. What do you (nice friendly!) all think?

I don't use formula, but if you're LO are well on how you normally prepare it (and they've all got to 5 months ok!) IMHO I'd stick with what was working already.I think its really tough when they change the 'official' advice, and I can't help but be sceptical about it 'sterilising' the powder. I mean, for the parents who really need the advice (and if you're worried and trying to get it right then it can't be aimed at you IMO) it sounds way too complicated, too slow and too stressful to happen in real life, esp for certain families.

I don't sterilise anything for J at all, from day 1, and its not always dishwashered either- thats from knowing the advice, reading around and deciding what I felt comfortable with(I know with DD1 i read things like I've just written with horror and disbelief!). I was a bit miffed to be have to sterilise for donating for the milk bank (hadn't thought of that in advance) but when I express for them I do sterilise.

Mocat good luck for the x-ray results, hope all is well. I've just read loads but can't remember anymore, sorry.

DH has d&v so we got even less sleep than usual (and more washing) so I've been trying to do exciting things like disinfect door handles in the hope we all don't get it- I know we're unlikely to escape but fingers crossed.
goodnight all, it feels very late to me!

notsoseriousanymore · 04/11/2008 21:18

Hello guys!! Welcome WME!! Where did you have your baby? The hospital DS was born at were quite clear that anything over 5% weight loss would have them recommending Formula, so am impressed you are exclusively BF!!

S is weaning very well. Tried apricot today and tomorrow we start on the veggies. He has been an angel all day (though mostly because we walked around 10 miles and he ADORES being out and about! I am pleased about that though - he's not going to be a couch potato!!)
Mocat - Well done you for being so positive. I am SURE you are right and there is no problem at all but like LM and I (with our babies eyes) it's so much better to have it checked earlier than later..

FLick - I will be scouring VOgue for your listing!! did you send some more leaflets? I didn't get them yet?

Wolverina - Off to wade into your thread now!! haha!

Hope you are all having good weeks... DH seems to have had some sort of epiphany - has offered to take me and DS to the science museum on saturday and swimming on SUnday!!!! I AM NOT COMPLAINING!!!

RIght, must get back Ebay..

TO whoever asked: I am an Industrial Chemist and have done LOADS with the new REACH regulations, so I am now (almost officially!) a REACH consultant and will deal with people's queries on how it affects their business.. I will also be a work-at-home-mummy-who-also-does-all-the-childcare-and-never-seems-to-have-enough-time

notsoseriousanymore · 04/11/2008 21:20

Babylove - Glad to hear you and LO are doing OK.

NSSA xx

LuckymummyBigFatTummy · 04/11/2008 22:14

So NSSA you will be a WAHMWADATCANSTHET ??? . Sounds like a good job. Good luck!

DBM I have posted on your thread too.

monkeysmama · 04/11/2008 23:17

Evening ladies

I am up watching the US election results start to trickle through. I am very excited! My sister & mum are popping over in a while to watch history in the making (we hope!) with me too.

Welcome wme - my baby girl was born on May 14th and is still exclusively breastfed. We're going to start weaning (blw i think) in the next month or so but I plan to keep on bfing at least until next May when I am supposed to return to work.

I've been reading posts even though I haven't posted myself for a while. Followed the sterilising debate. It makes me a bit sad really. I like people who know what they think but it seems that increasing numbers of women posting on different threads are just, well, horrible & looking for somewhere to vent. I'm sure it was water off a duck's back to my fellow May mummies but to some women, particuarly those who are feeling a bit vulnerable, some of the posts could be really damaging. FGS - this mummy business is so political and judgemental. The last thing we need is more of it on here!

Okay - dd's screaming so I'm off. MM

wastingmyeducation · 05/11/2008 08:56

Thanks for the welcome!
notsoseriousanymore he was born at Doncaster, and I think it was more a case of short-staffed, overworked and inconsistent post-natal care than anything else. We got referred to paeds at 8 weeks, by which time he was gaining, and they said he was fine, and the HV brought me a pump, which I left in the corner til she collected it. I'd spent my maternity leave reading up on bf here and kellymom, so I knew my stuff.

xx

notsoseriousanymore · 05/11/2008 10:11

WME - Sorry your care was inconsistent... Sorry if I came over as a bit rude - I didn't mean to!

wastingmyeducation · 05/11/2008 10:24

You didn't come over as rude! Did I sound rude back? Up to 12% for large bf babies was what one of the MWs I saw told me. He did get a little dehydrated, and looking back, someone should have made a little more fuss, but I'm glad we sorted it rather than everyone going ott with the intervention.

xx

notsoseriousanymore · 05/11/2008 10:32

Yes, that's what I meant... When I had DS, intervention was immediate. (seriously, there was a button to press if the baby's nappy needed to be changed and the mum didn't want to do - I am not kidding!!) I was told to formula feed from day 3 and DS was never exclusively BF - and was 100% FF by 4 months.

It's an odd one, isn't it? My care was first rate, but with hindsight, I did feel a bit clueless and didn't ever have to just 'find my feet' - does that make sense? There was always somewhere there to help, IYSWIM. (not that I am really complaining!)

I've found, since we've been home, DS and I have coped very well, and I do wonder if it's because I'm on my own and I just have to cope. There isn't anyone coming home at the end of the day to help out... I just have to be there for DS.

ANyway, YEAH for Obama!!

wastingmyeducation · 05/11/2008 10:57

He didn't get weighed again til day 6. I felt pretty much ignored in the ward, didn't really know what was going on. the three of us in the ward had to ask when do we get to go home, and it was very busy. He wasn't weeing or pooing much when we went home on day three, and had red crystals in his nappy when he did wee, so we took him to a&e, and were told it was normal and sent home. However I heard later it was normal if dehydrated! He was weeing though just not very much, and we were into week two when the meconium finally went. CMW basically wasn't hearing me. I didn't know any better and as noone else seemed particularly worried I obviously wasn't showing much concern to the MW. It was at least a month before the HV suggested getting the bf lady (midwife support) to come out and help with my cracked bleeding nips.
Ooh, I'm still upset about everything!

That's pretty bad being told to ff on day three though!

xx

LuckymummyBigFatTummy · 05/11/2008 11:00

That's what you get if you go where celebs go to have babies NSSA Lucky you! I would love to press a button now when I don't want to change another nappy!!!! LOL!

MM I completely agree with you about the nastiness on MN. It's beyond a joke sometimes. I was talking to my good pal and May thread gatecrasher denny last night, and she reads our thread (cos I'm on it and she likes to be nosey and see what I'm up to ) and said last night that I am lucky cos we are all such a lovely bunch on nice chilled out ladies....I think the April thread (her thread) gets a bit heated sometimes!!!

DD2 did her first solid poo!!!!!!!. It was like a little monkey nut waiting to greet me...ahhhh, my little girl is growing up .

She's sitting really well now, for up to half an hour or so on her own [proud mummy emoticon].

Had a tough few days of feeling rough and DH being at work, and not being able to leave the house cos a) raining and b) shoulder too painful to push double buggy even if I did want to go out .
We are due at MILs later for fireworks, DH said I should stay home with DD2 but tbh I am soooooo bored I think I will go along.

BTW, welcome WME

notsoseriousanymore · 05/11/2008 11:02

Oh, goodness - I can see why you are upset!! Yes, I've since been told that FFing at such a young age means the mother's milk supply is affected, but I didn't know that at the time and did / do believe that they knew best... I was a little sad to stop BFing, but DS is thriving and that has to be my main concern...

How are you both doing now? DS is really aware of other babies now - and dogs too (but that's to be expected in our household!!)

I just got given a load of kids books on Freecycle, which are just great - they are the really thick cardboard ones which DS can messa bout with, without damaging them!

LuckymummyBigFatTummy · 05/11/2008 11:02

oh and YAY for OBAMA!!!! I wonder if he'll be as good as David Palmer from '24' .

notsoseriousanymore · 05/11/2008 11:10

Hello LM - Yes I think we have a nice thread here... lots of us have met and are friends on FB, and I can personally couch for the support when times are a bit tough.

Yes, there were lots of CElebs there (and since) and it was lovely. I was lucky and it was a lovely experience - I got mistaken for a footballers wife at one point (I DO NOT LOOK LIKE ONE!!! haha!) and I also got a few strange looks when I asked to keep DS with me at night instead of sending him to thte nursery!! haha!

I'm sorry times are a bit tough for you. Two babies is so much harder... I am going to a place called Kidszone this afternoon with a few other mummies. Under ones are free and it'll be a good place to go when it's raining... Though I have met two other mummies with babies same age as DS who have the same sort of dog as me (they are ALL mad!!) and we go walking together, which makes getting out and about easier...

DS is being an angel today. He has lots of new toys (mainly through the joy of freecycling!) and is playing happily on his own...

(well done on the solid poo, BTW - how many 'solid' feeds does your DD2 have now? DS only has one but I am thinking of increasing it...)

notsoseriousanymore · 05/11/2008 11:11

vouch not couch - obviously!!!

mumofkandj · 05/11/2008 11:17

Yippee for poos, Obama and Freecycle!

mumofkandj · 05/11/2008 11:19

though when J eats meat the poo REALLY smells compared to normal!

mumofkandj · 05/11/2008 11:19

But she's with the chilminder so I can have a shower alone, so she might poo without me!

wastingmyeducation · 05/11/2008 11:21

He's really aware, and active. When we went to baby massage in the summer, he was looking around at all the other babies and wriggling and rolling constantly!
He doesn't sleep though. I am too tired to get much done, but we are working on some techniques from No cry sleep solution, and pretty much anything else we can think of! We are starting to plan the move to his own room for a few weeks time as well.
Got him weighed yesterday and he's a little further up the charts than he was, nearly 25th centile, fattest he's been!

xx

LuckymummyBigFatTummy · 05/11/2008 11:30

NSSA DD2 has a bit of her big sisters weetabix (with cows milk) at breakfast time, and currently 2 'icecubes' of veg puree at about 4pm. I am going to increase to 3 cubes of puree today as DH said she 'wolfed' it down yesterday!

Will probably go to 3 meals a day in the next few days. I read my diary last night from when DD1 was 6 months old. A month after starting weaning she was on one whole weetabix for breakfast!!

Must go, my little monkey nut has woken up..

notsoseriousanymore · 05/11/2008 11:45

WME - that sounds like DS.. We went to Monkey Music on Monday and he was desperate to move (there are a few 10 month old babies in his class who can move and he is extremely envious!!)

LM - Am impressed!!!! Must start giving DS more solids. He is enjoying what I do give him and just bought some more ice cube trays for veggies this week!

Must go to... My own little cherub is also now awake!!

NSSA xx

macaco · 05/11/2008 12:27

Hello all, posting and running...

Welcome WME! My DS was 4 weeks early and a low weight (4lb 12oz) and he wasn't even on the charts to begin with! He dragged himself up them and was 50th percentile by about 4 months where he's hovered ever since. We were told when we left hospital (by which time he was mixed fed) to weigh him EVERYDAY and if he lost 4 days running he had to go back to hospital. I'm quite surprised looking back they let us out within 48 hours of the birth....36 weeks gestation, low weight, bad jaundice and not latching on. But I'm glad they did as it was actually easier to BF at home, once he latched on a week later.

I'm sooooo chuffed about Obama! DS obviously wanted to see history in the making as he woke me at 6am, just in time to watch the acceptance speech live on TV!

Must run as have to go to work

Have a great time at the science museum NSSA

macaco · 05/11/2008 12:32

oooh, meant to say we do 2 lots of solids a day usually but naps are all over the place at the mo' 30 mins here, 40 mins there so quite hard to fit any meals in...he's asleep all the time. Very bitey too, so perhaps a third tooth on the way?

right have to go now...
