i stopped sterilising at 8 months-dd has been on cows milk for 2 weeks.

sweetkitty · 27/07/2005 17:10

DD was BF up to 3 weeks ago so never sterilised after about 6 months (when she last had EBM), she's on cows milk in beakers now as well.

She eats anything as long as she can eat it herself, becoming more difficult to find finger foods!

poppy101 · 27/07/2005 19:26

I am still sterilising bottles, and cups as he is still on some formula. HV told me to put him gradually onto cows milk from 12 months.

Still pop the odd thing in the milton cold water steriliser too, but am putting things in the dishwasher now, doing it gradually as I have a really fussy husband.

I tend to give my lo organic food, so often just cook meals up for him, however, we do sometimes have the odd meal with him, often find that I give my lo his proper lunch at about 11.45 as he can't wait any longer and I often don't want a proper meal with him. However, now the holidays are here we are all eating more or less at the same time.

poppy101 · 27/07/2005 19:27

Just a quick query, my lo doesn't really enjoy his breakfast, will often devour his mid morning snack, lunch and tea, has a 7oz bottle for bed, but not that fussed on his morning milk or breakfast, is this normal ??

What kind of food do your children eat at breakfast and how much milk do they drink at breakfast time ?? I am really interested in this ?

hermykne · 27/07/2005 19:53

poppy tell your fussy husband that you really can stop sterlising, even if the baby is on formula, at this stage, his immune system is well capable of fighting any dirt from the household.
my dd was still on formula at 1 and her things werent sterlised after about 8mths.
with ds stopped sterlising at 5mths and when u have no2 you wont have time to sterlise til 1yr!!

i would be too worried if he isnt keen on breakfast. some babies are some arent, maybe he likes to wake up fully andenjoy his food later.
i'm sure it ll change, does he finger pick his food yet? maybe try him with just fruit 1st thing or a cereal he can pick up - cheerios?

my ds and dd
have cereal, yogurt for dd, and yogurt pancakes (made by me ) for breakfast, plus a banana and nectarine/peach whatever is about, porridge for ds with prunes/pear.

poppy101 · 27/07/2005 19:54

When you give cereal etc. what kind of portion do you give ?

poppy101 · 27/07/2005 19:55

He does enjoy finger feeding and will often sit and eat some fruit, or will eat toast in the mornings, have tried him with honey pops (Peter Rabbit range) with milk on, wasnt keen so gave them to him to eat without milk and he quite enjoyed them.

hermykne · 27/07/2005 20:51

poppy about a tablespoon of cereal and then if he finishes it, a bit more.
whereas porridge he wolfs that down and it prob about 8tbl maybe more

littlerach · 27/07/2005 20:53

Evie has abou 2/3 of a weetabix, then half a slice of toast.

OP posts:
Springchicken · 28/07/2005 09:44

I stopped sterilising at bout 8 months and Evie has been on cows milk now for about 2-3 months.
She is doing really good on it, only has 1 bottle a day now which is before bed and it saves sooo much more money.

Evie's daily food plan is a bit like this:
Breakkie: Slice of toast and banana
Lunch: Chicken Curry, Veggie lasagne, Chicken paprika and rice then ice cream, fruit or a cake.
Dinner: Shepherds Pie, Corned beef hash, spag bol - yoghurt ot fruit for pudding.
If she is hungry she has fruit or crisps for a snack.
Not very good with sandwiches yet, although she did manage half a cheese sarnie yesterday.

Also had her first happy meal at the weekend - a very proud moment i must say - she had fishfingers, fruit bag and a fruit shoot - loved it. She also tries her luck with my maccy d's, she'd devoured half of my double cheese burger before i even realised the other day .

sweetkitty · 28/07/2005 17:54

Abbie's munchies for the day:

brekkie: half to full beaker of milk on waking
one weetabix or ready brek with milk
toast about half a slice
banana or bits of apple as a snack
Lunch: cheese on toast
yoghurt (rachels organic or yoplait one so full sized)
4 strawberries
rice cakes or toddler biscuit as a snack
Dinner: chicken with homemade chips and peas, sweetcorn, broccoli and green beans (frozen veg mix)
rice pudding or yoghurt
grapes

beaker of milk before bed usually drinks about half

she also has 3 beakers of water/juice 90%/10% during the day

I was worried she was eating enough but having typed it out it looks a lot now, she's a nightmare though as everything apart from yoghurt has to be finger food.

poppy101 · 28/07/2005 20:40

Was slightly concerned but think that Rhydian is actually doing quite well, perhaps not drinking enough water though, he normally has

1/2 to 2/3 of weetabix and sultanas, some banana or some toast. Try and get about 5floz formula milk in and use some in his cereal. Tried him on a beaker but is so slow that top up with a bottle.
Snack - small drink of water and orange juice, a rusk, or some fruit or some rice cakes.
Lunch - small drink of water/ojuice, bowl of lamb casserole for e.g., Yeovally yogurt, and plenty of fruit.
2-3ish 5floz of milk
4.30-5 ish small drink of water/ojuice, bowl of soup and 1 piece of toast, or buttered rusks etc. and pudding of rice pudding or fruit.
Bedtime 7 floz bottle.

What is the best way to get him of bottle in the daytime, have used doidy cup but he blows bubbles, ttippee takes forever, not keen on other cups that I have tried, also not that keen on having a lot too drink 1 beaker of a ttippee generally lasts the whole day. Should I offer more ????

jessicaandbumpsmummy · 28/07/2005 22:35

Jess's average day

8oz milk at approx 6am
1 weetabix for breakfast
6oz milk for nap
biscuit/breadstick etc for snack
sandwich (1 slice of bread) at lunch followed by yoghurt
8oz milk for nap
biscuit/breadstick type snack occasionally mid
afternoon - not always interested
spag bol/macaroni cheese etc for tea - usually about 12-20 mouthfuls followed by yoghurt or fruit, although we have just found she is allergic to mandarins!
8oz bed time milk
8oz dream feed at 11pm if not all milk drunk during day!

Springchicken · 29/07/2005 08:04

Poppy - My DD didn't used to drink alot of fluids apart from milk really but over the course of the last 4-6 weeks she has picked up on it.
I brought her a new cup from ToysRUs yesterday - it's much bigger so lasts much longer, you can get them with or without handles.
We out for the day last week and Evie matched all the other kids (youngest being 2.5) drink for drink - i wondered if she was drinking too much but they must get really thirsty being so active.

Springchicken · 29/07/2005 08:06

Also......Why have i suddenly got the daughter from hell the last few days????
She is just not happy, you put her on the floor to play - she climbs up your legs, you pick her up - she tries to jump down, you put her in her buggy - she tries to throw herself out!!!!

For the first time ever last night, i have to resort to going to for a long walk to get her to go to sleep!
Anyone else experiencing this or is it just my delightful DD?

Sponge · 29/07/2005 13:06

Harry's still drinking his milk from a bottle. He has water from a beaker but hardly drinks any and I'm keen that he drinks his milk so I'm not too fussed about forcing the beaker issue yet.
He has a bottle at breakfast (some on his cereal), one at bedtime and another at about 10.30/11pm just before we go to bed, otherwise he wakes up.
He does eat finger foods - bits of toast, fruit, peas & sweetcorn, raisins etc, but for his main meal I still whizz it up otherwise he spits most of it out and he has a good appetite.
I'm not too fussed, as long as he eats, which he does.

poppy101 · 29/07/2005 19:05

Springchicken, what kind of cup did you buy from Toysrus, as I might look at trying something different.

Tried giving a beaker for breakfast with milk today, only had about 2 floz and that was mainly on his cereal, so gave him an extra floz milk at lunchtime from doidy and then gave his 5floz milk (from bottle) about 2.30pm and his bottle tonight. He had a bit more water to drink today from his beaker, so will see what he does tomorrow.

Springchicken · 29/07/2005 19:57

Like this Poppy but bigger, pretty sure it is an Avent one.
Think Sainsburys do them too.

littlerach · 31/07/2005 19:23

That's the kind we use, they are very good, though baby does have to suck hard to get it piut.

Wow, there's so much to catch up on. Now that I'm at work I don't find much time to keep track of what everyone is doing and in the evenings I'm just too tired.

About sterilising: I stopped doing that ages ago. Pretty much when Thomas decided to lick tables, chairs, the carpet and the kitchen floor. Much worse to be caught from that than a (clean) bottle. I did sterilise everything when I was expressing, especially if it had to go in the freezer. However, that is ages ago!

I mixed formula and cow's milk half and half for about a month but he's been on proper cow's milk for a month now. He loves it, as long as it's not straight from the fridge. Too cold!

For breakfast he has 3 oz of milk, followed by 1 Weetabix with some fruit or fruit flavoured baby cereal in it. He went through a phase where he wasn't very hungry in the am but he made up for that later in the day. He likes having a big drink of milk in the afternoon and we offer him another 3 oz after his bath. He often doesn't want this.

He's been drinking from a cup for a long time now. We use AnywayUp cups. The lids are hard to get on/off but they don't leak much. When the weather is hot he'll drink 4 or 5 cups of water/juice a day.

How are people doing for naps? Since Thomas has started nursery it's not as structured as it used to be. He was on two naps a day, a total of about 3 hours. Now he only has one, and often it is short because it isn't as quiet at nursery as at home. We're only giving him one nap at the weekend too now, to keep some sort of routine but he could easily have more. So he's quite tired these days and a lot more grumpy for it.
