Smudgey - I co-sleep and DS just lies next to me. I position him for a feed in the crook of my arm and curl around him, then I drop off to sleep. When he's done he rolls back and sleeps beside me. Does that make sense?

I bought a breast pump yesterday and am quite excited at the prospect of using it today and hopefully DP being able to give Stanley a bottle soon. Isn't it funny how your definition of excitement changes when you have a baby...

Honeymoonmummy · 23/11/2008 11:21

Hi all, I'm sorry to hear so many of you have poorly babies, best wishes to them xx

We are supposed to be meeting friends at a pub at 1 (easier than tidying the house!!!) but I have had Poppy latched to my boob for the last 2 hours, give or take 5 mins... the girl sure likes her milk...

I am still completely confused about slings, I really want one asap but I dont want to order one online just to find it doesnt suit and I am not average sized, plus Poppy is long. Went to Mothercare the other day and tried the Babasling and the Primaxx, the Babasling seemed too small and the Primaxx I have read on MN reviews gives you a bad back. AAAARRRGH!! Have just emailed my local NCT representative to see if she has any ideas.

ajm200 · 23/11/2008 12:36

Honeymoonmummy, There is a site on the web that lets you hire slings to try www.bigmamaslings.co.uk

What you really need is to visit a local slingmeet where you can talk to other sling users and try a variety of slings. www.slingmeet.co.uk/

great site. i justordered the peanut shell! anyone tried that one?

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 23/11/2008 18:42

hi everyone - doing my best to catch up for the 1st time since Ethan was born, where the hell does the time go?!

Sorry to hear about all the sick babies, must be a bit miserable for mums and babies alike.

Sling-wise, think we'll go to a sling meet because Ethan is too long to be carried in the cradle position with our calin bleu fleece and can't hold his head up enough for the cross carry - also I still haven't mastered getting it on on my own, think we may have to just get a baby bjorn for now

Had a tough few weeks as a new mummy, never thought it would be so hard - hugely rewarding and I adore him but flipping heck!! Have also thrown out all the parenting books as the stress of being the perfect parent with the perfect routine baby was making me spiral in a mess of baby blues - not pretty, so learning how to trust my own intuition again.

hope to be able to keep up to date a bit better from now on

CantSleepWontSleep · 23/11/2008 19:05

Parenting books are great in theory aren't they gwtmh, but sadly most babies don't read them!

If you're going to get a bb carrier, then may I suggest that it's worth paying the extra for the 'active' one, as the back support is much better.

DD is bouncing today, so apart from her runny nose you wouldn't know that anything had been wrong yesterday.
Sadly the same can't be said for the rest of us, and I am now officially Not Well. Not helped by only around 3 hours sleep last night. Will be v glad when ds' cold is gone and I can try to get him into his crib again without guilt! Last night's attempts failed miserably.

loulou33 · 23/11/2008 19:55

Soory you're still so poorly csws and hope you get more sleep tonight. I have been failing to get Joe to sleep anywhere but with me during the day due to his cold and blocked nose. My MIL has helped no end in getting me to put Joe down at night awake in his cot but it's not working during the day and i can't be bothered with it whilst he is so unwell....he did let me put him in his rocking chair once he was asleep this pm but like Duncan he woke after 20 mins with a big sneeze, poor love.

Newsflash - Joe had a HUGE poo this morning you will all be pleased to hear!! Very relieved, especially Joe i expect...right off to watch SCD
here's to a quiet and settled night all round

4andnotout · 23/11/2008 20:06

ajm200 i have a pair of lilpadz and just cant get on with them, my let down is fast and furious and they just cannot cope with the amount of milk,so have gone back to the avent washables and changing countless times!
Has anyone else had snow? We had about 3-4 inches, we tried to leave our village to pick up dd1&dd2 from my parents but our van couldn't cope with the snow and hills and after much slipping, sliding and desperation (i pushed it up a bloody hill for about 1/2 mile!) we had to turn round and come home as it was simply to dangerous So our dd's are sleeping at my parents again tonight and hopefully tommorow it will thaw and we can have them home.
Tilly-Grace doesn't have a cold yet everytime i move her head from my boob she has left a lovely little bogey for me Parenting is such a glamerous job 'eh!

pepperrabbit · 23/11/2008 20:49

evening all,
csws sorry you are having a miserable time wth sinusitis - can you take anything for it? i seem to remember having some abs when I had it and was PG with DS2 so there should be something safe while BF?
loulou v glad to hear about Joe's poo !
gwtmbh no-one tells you quite how tough a new baby is, especially when it's your first and you're making such a huge adjustment to being a mum. My mum said - "but you wouldn't have believed me anyway, and why make you miserable in anticipation!"
Hope all the other poorly babies feel better soon.
We had a lovely evening out, though I yawned all the way through the dessert and we didn't last till coffee! Then we had the most appalling night DD just wouldn't settle till 2.30, woke at 3.15 , took me till 4.30 to feed and settle her again and she woke back up at 5.15....
Have looked like a zombie all day and Dh is in bits, as he'd had a drink to celebrate his birthday as well so had that to fight with too.

CantSleepWontSleep · 23/11/2008 20:55

Actually pepper it's not so much sinusitis as I had expected, but a horrendous chest/cough. I went to bed an hour ago, but after not going more than 2 seconds without coughing, and being barely able to breathe, I have got up again. No idea how I will cope later, as all my inhalers were out of date (never use them normally) so were thrown away.

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 23/11/2008 21:20

thanks pepperrabbit - I've found it a really hard adjustment just in terms of knowing when to trust myself and my intuition, think that's been the hardest thing of all...csws have heard those wise words before - that the babies don't read the books!

jenwa · 23/11/2008 22:29

ajm I know its not funny but did chuckle at your DS dragging DD more of the image really, scary as they can be so quick to do things, DD tried to pick up DD2 yesterday no!!!!!!

Feel tired, DD never settled for ages last night, took from 6:30pm til 12:30 with feeds on and off but then slept til 6am, have put her in the swinging crib as she fell asleep in it this am and hoping she sleeps now til next feed due and I will go up to bed too! Please dont let me jinx it by saying she slept in it this am fingers crossed. csws you poor thing, I cant cope when I am tired so dont know how you are, I slept from 10 :30 -12:30 then 1am - 6am and am shattered!!! Hope you feel better soon, and get some rest!

Girlwiththemouseyhair just ask on here as you will get good advice from other mums. I think the books are good for a guide but its hard to stick to set routines as you can never live like that everyday! Other things happen and you just have to tweak things to work around you. Just do what you can and dont get too stressed

My Dh went out the other night and he kept me awake by falling on me and throwing up afew times oh and then snoring!!! He made up for it today bu getting up with DD1 and bringing me brekkie in bed

CantSleepWontSleep · 24/11/2008 02:40

Blimey jenwa - that's more sleep than I used to get before even getting pregnant this time!

(Am up drinking honey tea to try and ease chest whilst feeding ds).

OP posts:
star6 · 24/11/2008 04:22

jenwa how did you do that? I would give my left arm to sleep 1am-6am. i chuckled at dragging baby by one leg image, too! but agree, very scary! and at your dh!
csws i hope you get some sleep tonight. dont know how you do it!!
congrats on the poo loulou how do you get him to sleep putting hi down awake??
gwtmh I know! big shock, isnt it? like jenwa said, keep posting here, everyone is super helpful and have first hand experience and practical advice.
pepper not sure how you made it through the day. I hope tonight is better!

Honeymoonmummy · 24/11/2008 07:49

I've already tried the slingmeet site and there is nothing in my area unfortunately. I will have a look at bigmama, didnt realise they hired, ta.

ajm200 · 24/11/2008 10:17

Honeymoonmummy, it's a shame there's no slingmeet in your area.

gwtmh Have you tried the cross carry with Ethan's head behind one of the shoulder straps. I have carried Amelia like this from birth as she fussed too much in the cradle carry and as my hormones went a bit made I ended up with enormous boobs for a week or two so with Amy's head against one and her bum against the other I looked like I had a Jordan style boob job and was wearing lilac bandages over my clothes. The last straw was a boozy old bloke commenting on the size of my bust to his equally drunk mate. Another option would be the cradle carry with his legs hanging out.

ajm200 · 24/11/2008 10:47

It look like bigmamaslings have stopped hiring them out since I was looking at the start of the year

Try www.slingjax.co.uk/ instead. 9.99 for two weeks hire + refundable deposit

star6 · 24/11/2008 11:15
