I had one home visit from hv, and it's now up to me to go to clinic (which is on 2 mornings per month) if I want to see her again.

star - ds does settle better when swaddled tightly, whether with our arms or a blanket.
Last night would have been better if I hadn't wasted over 2 hours trying to get him to sleep in his crib instead of on us .
We have now concluded, however, that ds is milk intolerant, just like his sister was, so I am off all dairy for the foreseeable future.

OP posts:
star6 · 07/11/2008 14:55

what? no ice cream?
Just kidding, they have dairy free ice cream
Good that you figured that out, csws!

We continue to let ds sleep on his tummy with angelcare monitor and one of us awake watching him... doesn't do a lot for our sleep but he gets plenty now at least. He's up for feeds still every few hours after his long stretch (4-5 hours) but he only takes from one breast generally and then back to sleep at night... thank goodness! I'm sure there's another growth spurt coming up though so not holding my breath.

CantSleepWontSleep · 07/11/2008 15:20

I'm sure it would be fine for both you and dh to sleep whilst you have the monitor on star.
It's more the 'no cheese in cooking' that's a pain for me.

OP posts:
star6 · 07/11/2008 15:25

ohhh I didn't think about that! What a total pain!! No cheese! A good friend of mine - her fiance hates cheese... so they have that dilemma of cooking all meals without it. I think it's the weirdest thing to not like! Poor you. is there such thing as dairy free cheese?

star6 · 07/11/2008 15:41

must be a vegan cheese........

loulou33 · 07/11/2008 15:55

joe had his jabs today - bless him he howled til i stuck a boob in his mouth and then it was all forgotten. he slept all night last night after a week of not settling til 12/1am and feeding++. there's no logic to it at all.....now weighs 11lb 10oz today - 91st centile...that's my BIG boy!

star - a baby should gain about 1 oz a day or roughly 1/2lb a week but this varies and bf babies have big growth weeks and then tail off weeks where they gain nothing. i remember ds1 gained 8-10 oz a week til 12 weeks then nothing. i was demented with worry til a friend said a tail off is normal but the charts are based on ff babies who get the 'same' at each feed and therefore their gain each week is mo re gradual. there's nothing qrong withyour milk - all bf mums think this from time to time but he would tell you if you weren't making enough for him.

star - why do you need to stay awake to watch him - surely the monitor will wake you . i know it has woken me before and i'm a fairly heavy sleeper...get some rest both of you

csws - sorry about the lactose intolerance - that's a bummer for you.

CantSleepWontSleep · 07/11/2008 16:42

Dairy free cheese is sadly vile and not at all cheeselike!

Ouch for jabs - they come around so quickly don't they.

I didn't think there was a set amount that a baby 'should' gain, but would use whatever gain keeps him on his centile line as a guide (you can get bf charts from nct website iirc).

Can I be a bit anal pedantic precise and just clarify that it's cows milk protein that ds (and almost all children with a milk problem) can't deal with rather than lactose, which tends to be more of an adult problem.

SmudgeyDoodle · 07/11/2008 17:26

Evening all. DH has taken Ds for a quick walk down to the coop and little madam is having a snooze so thought I'd take the time to post. I can read whilst BF but still being so careful with my latch that I can't type. Sore nips gradually getting better so hope I've sorted it before it got too bad. DD still got no name (6 days old today) but I think we've decided really and are just trying it out for size at home first. Last 2 nights have been much better. She wouldn't sleep in moses basket first two nights home but MW suggested putting a t-shirt of mine that I'd worn in her basket and to rub where her head is going to go before you put her down (to warm it up and make it smell of you). No idea if she would have been better anyway but she's slept all night in moses basket since with just waking every 2.5 hours for food. Today she has been more awake and seems fairly content apart from when she needs to poo.
CSWS that's rubbish about the cows milk protein intolerance but at least you knew to try it yourself after DD. Hope DS now settles better. Star LOL at image of you and DH taking it in turns to watch DS sleep. There is no way I would be able not to fall asleep - how on earth do you do it? LouLou hope Joe isn't too disturbed by jabs and that you get another good night. Anyone doing anything exciting over weekend? I think everyone thinks we'll have other people visiting and we don't actually have any plans at all. I plan a nice lie in bed with a cup of tea and a good book but not sure whether the rest of the family will oblige!

rowanmac · 07/11/2008 19:00

hi i still exist. have survived first 2 weeks of home alone with 2 but no time to mn. ds is gen v good but today kept thumping his sister which made her cry so then my attention was on her so he threw cars and wooden blocks at me. unfortunatly quite a good shot.

have managed to take both into town for new shoes for ds. left his teddy in the bank so had to traipse round to find it while dd woke up expecting elevenses. slightly frazzled.

first day alone we had snow and the kettle broke at 9am. ds aged 3 said 'oh no mummys not had a coffee yet, she'll be all funny' ...they catch on quickly don't they.

anna is asleep over my shoulder i am slowly advancing in the battle of the moses basket, i started at 48hrs this time as opposed to 8 weeks last time. we are down to an hour per feed from 40 mins to feed and an hour to settle. still up 3x per night. she is growing well, no time to get her weighed but growing out of clothes.

still bleeding, had a huge bleed last week, mw was trying to admit me but i couldn't face going back in and disrupting ds again so waited for it to settle and agreed i would go in if happened again, which it didn't. not heavt now but annoying [3 weeks]

not quite caught up but hope pepperabbit feeling better and congrats to jenwa on another girl.

CantSleepWontSleep · 07/11/2008 19:24

I'm still bleeding a little rowanmac after 4 weeks. Thought I'd finished ages ago, but after a couple of days off I started again.

Hip hip hooray!!! 10pm-4am!!! a bit of stirring but was able to fall back asleep on his own. He woke to feed at 4am then 4.45-7am sleep! been awake since but sleepily feeding now.

loulou I have no idea how I stay awake and watch him. Im just so scared that something will happen. first night home he choked on spit up when on his back and was gasping for air... I picked him up and calmed him but it really freaked me out! Last night I slept while he did but only when I turned him on his side and angelcare monitor on... after a few hours of deep sleep on his tummy... tricked him!

star6 · 08/11/2008 09:31

myjob your dh sounds amazing. If I were to share information about bleeding down there with my dh he would put his hands over his ears. He's one of those who likes to believe that women don't use the toilet...
The birth was quite a shock for him... he saw the end result after cutting and ventouse and now refers to that area as "the war zone". He'll ask, "how's the war zone healing up?"
lovely.

SmudgeyDoodle · 08/11/2008 12:35

Wow star that's an amazing amount of sleep, nice one. Hope you feel better for it or did you lie awake thinking, well he'll be waking soon! LOL at war zone!
Rowanmac glad to hear you've survived the 2 alone. DS sounds lovely and very clued up re effects of coffee.
DH took DS swimming this morning and now he's in bed (DS that is!) so I've taken it easy, had a bath and scoffed chocolate digestives (sorry CSWS). Now aiming to try and fill in some of little missies baby book. Might not be able to get very far though seeing as we still haven't agreed a name! Also trying to persuade DH to go and rake up the leaves outside - chances of success - zero to nil I think!
Have nice w-e and hope all those daddies back at work enjoy spending time with their LO.

loulou33 · 08/11/2008 15:09

Star - i thought ds1 would choke as he was always sick in his sleep and so is Joe but paediatrician told me that it is virtually impossible forbabies to choke on sick except prem, drugged or sick babies as all babies have reflex that makes them turn their head to the side if being sick when on their back. I have watched both boys and yes, this is true that they turn their head to the side when being sick (this happens a lot in our house!!)
Well done on the sleeping front as well - long may it continue. Joe slept well last night too
Rowanmac lol at your ds - bless them

Ooh smudgey - I lived on choc digestives when dd was tiny, until we found out about her milk problem. Think they are prob my fave biscuit, though custard creams come close. At least most bourbons are dairy free!

Wow (and ) at your amazing night star. No doubt I shall live up to my moniker and be the last to have a baby that does any acceptable amount of sleep .

Well today I've managed to do some painting with dd (she loves this but I always try to avoid it), and then go to Ikea with in-laws as well as dh and dc. Dd was good (for her), but clearly completely exhausted by lunchtime, after getting up at 5:30 again. She fell asleep at 4:15 in the car, and is still asleep, so this doesn't bode well for bedtime! Ds also slept really well in the carrier (baby bjorn worn by dh this time), waking only when dh tried to clean off the lingonberry jam that he'd dropped on his head . He had a feed and nappy (and outfit due to leak) change and then went back to sleep. He got another feed when we got home and is now sleeping again on my lap. Am hoping that this means that he will sleep well tonight as not overtired, rather than not sleep well because he's already had so much sleep!

Think we've managed to choose some sofas and a crockery cabinet (or at least narrow the choice to two), so a productive day too.

Giving fireworks display a miss tonight as it's raining and cold, so will hopefully snuggle up with X-Factor and a calm baby instead . Anyone else off to a bonfire?

jenwa · 08/11/2008 18:12

I am still bleeding, was a bit worried as it seemed to have just about stopped then yesterday a clot fell out and been bleeding again since Its typpical as I got panty liners the other day and felt really good that it was stopping!

rowanmac Lovely name by the way for you DD

star I share everything with DH, I think he has a right to know just so he can be a little sympathetic and realise what we go through not that it prob makes any difference

I feel abit emotional tonight as DH away overnight with friends and DD1 away at parents so just me and Phoebe but I feel loney now and I was actually looking forward to it before!

Going off to eat pie and chips and settle down for X Factor

CSWS sorry about the intolerance again, at least you know from last time but still not great but hopefully Duncan will become more settled and you can get some rest

CantSleepWontSleep · 08/11/2008 20:49

Oh lol - isn't it just typical. I managed to get ds asleep in his basket in the living room, and dd decided to get out of bed and want attention, so I still didn't get to do much with the time!

Just sitting down to X-Factor now, so here's hoping I get to see it all (will leave results until tomorrow) and still get some sleep.

[hopeful]

Just put a new pic of Phoebe on here (well it was taken afew days ago)

loulou33 · 08/11/2008 21:24

hope all your littel ones are asleep right now....

csws - sorry it was my fault with the lactose thing - i know its annoying when people mix these terms up - i was typing with joe in one hand so not really concentrating, will try harder tomorrow

myjob/jenwa - it was my mum who mentioned the having a girl thing as she kept going on about how sad she was for me not to have the joys of a daughter. ie, you'll miss out on girly chats, shopping trips and the friendhsip of a daughter - she never let up and it left me feeling really p*ed off with her - thanks for your sensible words though to counteract her madness!!

myjob - no naomi doesn't need her charts altering as she was only 2 weeks early. they only take it into account with development if they are 3 weeks or more early. Joe's growth charts have been moved back by 3 weeks so in his book, he's only classed as 5 weeks at the moment. i think that's why she smiled as 5 weeks and Joe waited until he was 8 weeks(but 5 weeks from due date iyswim) phew - off to bed....sleep well xxx

star6 · 09/11/2008 05:46

Beautiful jenwa

Ekka · 09/11/2008 12:58

Haven't finished reading the thread, but Star, about the weight gain - I remember from dd that my hv said that anything over 3-4oz a week was fine (she was v slow to gain weight for ages). As long as the hv isn't worried then ignore other people! Apparently when I was a baby (I was bf too) I put on 1lb a week for a few weeks and my mum was worried she was over feeding me .

Things seem to be going ok here, dd is over her cold (but is now waking up at least 4 times a night). Matthew has had the cold and is really snuffly and coughs a lot, but seems to be feeding ok and goes up to 3 hrs between feeds (never managed that with dd at this age!). Luckily dh has taken on the job of dealing with dd at night, so I'm just tired, not completely shattered.... Got to go as Matthew is wanting food!
