Yay!!! There's hope for my country! I'm not so ashamed of it at the moment

SmudgeyDoodle · 05/11/2008 06:32

Morning Star. Wondered whether you'd be celebrating this am. Have a good day. Quinlan's maybe the start of new things.....

star6 · 05/11/2008 07:07

I'm from Vermont, which borders canada (2 hr drive from my town to canada)... so I usually claim canadian at comedy clubs and such to save embarrassment
SO happy more people got out to vote!

smudgey I do think sleeping on us is comforting for us as much as baby

CantSleepWontSleep · 05/11/2008 07:26

Worst night yet in sleep terms. I went to bed at 8:45 and got nearly 2 hours whilst ds was sleeping downstairs, but other than that I got less than an hour all night. Ds wasn't screaming, but just couldn't seem to settle, and was quite refluxy. He's now desperately overtired (not the only one!) so is doing his screaming this morning instead. Have asked dh (who always gets much more sleep than me) to drive dd to school, as not convinced I would manage it without an accident.

SmudgeyDoodle · 05/11/2008 07:31

Oh no CSWS - that sounds awful. I hope you manage to get some sleep today whilst dD at nursery. LOL at claiming Canadian heritage when at comedy clubs etc. I always wonder whether people are brave or stupid when they own up to being from wherever the comedian mentions!

ronshar · 05/11/2008 09:15

CSWS. Sorry only just got back on computer. I had to stop the infacol the next day. It did seem to very rapidly stop the bad wind pains but the folowing night poor William was swimming in his own vomit!!! All a bit projectile. I have heard good things about the other one. Begins with a D, not sure of name.

Have you tried Dh winding baby? I watch in wonder after i have been rubbing, patting, jigging about and dancing round the kitchen, when DH just puts baby across his lap and a minute later great big burp and explosion out the other end and one happy baby and a smug DH.
Still not getting alot of sleep. Last night we managed a whole 3 hours between feeds. still a shock. Both girls were sleeping through the night by 2 weeks! I do find it difficult as no good without enough sleep, luckily DH has finally realised I was crumbling and is being great now. Finally.

Well done Star sounds like you are fantastic mummy.

We love Barack and all those Americans who want a better world to live in

star6 · 05/11/2008 09:18

Right, this may be a silly question but looking at my bf books, one shows a picture of a baby bfing with Mother laying on her back... Is that possible? I always lean forward so that gravity can do it's thing and make the milk flow to the baby.

I think of it like if it were a bottle the baby couldn't suck the milk out if the bottle were standing on the table and you just put the baby's mouth on it.

Has anyone done this? I get the laying on your side thing... that makes sense, milk can still flow.. but on your back? Surely not, right?

CantSleepWontSleep · 05/11/2008 09:27

I can feed laying on my back star. Try thinking of it more like sucking through a straw than sucking at a bottle.

Think you mean dentinox ronshar. I tried that with dd but wasn't as keen, though I forget why. Think there are some underlying causes to our wind problems, so we're investigating those at the moment.
Dh sadly worse than me at winding. Either of us can get a good burp out of him, but he does tend to retain some as well.

OP posts:
star6 · 05/11/2008 09:38

Thanks csws what do you do with the baby? Bring him on from the side or lay him vertically on your stomach? And how do you support him? Sorry, if too difficult to explain, that's ok. I just want to try it and there's no explanation in this book, just a photo and I can only see baby's head... which he is holding up himself.

CantSleepWontSleep · 05/11/2008 09:41

star - think these links might be useful to you re breastmilk storage, as lots of people wrongly suggest that it can't be kept for this long, when in fact it can. Breastfeeding network and La Leche League.

OP posts:
CantSleepWontSleep · 05/11/2008 09:45

Well it's obv easier with dd, but I do it sometimes with ds because it helps to keep him upright while he feeds. I bring him on from the side, so that he's sort of crouching beside me - he bobs his head like a chicken searching for my nipple then .

OP posts:
star6 · 05/11/2008 09:49

If I let ds bob his head around my nipple like that I would be in loads of pain. My nipples are still really cracked, pink and extremely sore to the touch (even water from shower and towel hurt like crazy). I'm going to try it with him but is there a way of controlling where his head/mouth goes?

Thanks for links. I expressed an impressive 110 ml from 2 breasts together yesterday!

CantSleepWontSleep · 05/11/2008 10:00

Well I do tend to hold his head and put him on in the end most times, as with his bobbing and my huge wobbly nork it can take a while otherwise!

Am worried about your breasts still being so sore. Are you still having treatment for thrush and/or mastitis?

OP posts:
ronshar · 05/11/2008 10:12

At your chicken picture CSWS. My little one does that to. While it is amusing I have to put a stop to it by holding his head a guiding him gentle into the correct place. Once he gets a face full of my huge breast he usually latches on. My breast seem to be bigger than his head, probably quite scary for a small baby

A slightly personnal question now but has anyone used those pelvic floor toners before? I dont have any incontinence issues (yet) but would quite like to help insides get back to how they were before 3rd child mushed them up in his rapid entry into the world!
Saw some in Boots but didnt want lady to think I wet my pants like the lady from Little Britain. Understand if a bit to personnal to share but would like to hear any good/bad things.

Happy Guy Fawkes day. I love fireworks but not sure how the small boy will react to the noise.

star6 · 05/11/2008 10:18

csws mastitis seems to be gone after antibiotics... using nystan cream for suspected thrush on my nipples but not really doing much as he feeds so much its never on for long. used lansinoh from very beginning but cracks still there. latch better... feeling better while he feeds but initial "clamp" can be painful depending on where he bites down.

CantSleepWontSleep · 05/11/2008 10:27

Can you get nystan as an oral solution for adults? I know that dd had it as one when she was tiny, as I remember the lovely cherry smell! That way at least it could work on fixing you from the inside out. I'd give your gp a ring and ask (or start a thread on here first so that you know the answer before you speak to him ).

CantSleepWontSleep · 05/11/2008 10:27

Not used pelvic floor toner ronshar.

OP posts:
ronshar · 05/11/2008 10:38

I am essentially a lazy mare so doing exercise alone isnt fast enough for me. I think I am worring for nothing but would really like to get bacck in the saddle, so to speak, with DH soon. Sorry I'm sure you dont need to know any of this

hedgepig · 05/11/2008 11:03

ronshar I was reading somewhere (probably mumsnet) that if you are having problems that it is best to get referred via the GP (mention at 6 week check) because there are various toning devices and the ones you buy in the shops may not be the right one for your problem IYSWIM. Must admit my pelvis floor is a bit week I keep trying to remember to do the exercises when I feed Oliver but my brain is jelly so I keep forgetting.
We are off to a baby massage thing this afternoon, hopefully DS won't scream through the whole process.

star6 · 05/11/2008 13:30

How long do your babies usually feed for on each breast? ds feeds for 30-45 min and I have to detatch him... he falls asleep latched. and has never refused the breast. I think I'm over feeding him!

star6 · 05/11/2008 14:10

oh also do you ever hear a click (maybe his tongue?) whle bf?

loulou33 · 05/11/2008 15:15

Star - his tongue shouldn't click - this means he's not latched on properly i think. Joe sometimes does this and i just remove him and re-attach him. it means he's got air pockets in his mouth which is what makes the noise as he hasn't got enough boob in there . Joe usually feeds for about 20-30 mins before he either wriggles as he has wind, boob is empty or he falls off completely zonked. If 1 or 2 i wind him and put him on the other side - i don't think (although someone can correct me) that there's much point in letting them feed on one side for more than 45mins or so. this is particularly true if there's nothing left as it will just make you more sore.

Why do you say you're over-feeding - is he being sick a lot after feeds? Usually bf babies know when they've had enough (except my two sons!!) - if he's hungry, he's hungry. Unless he is vomiting it back up again, then it might be a problem or if he's using you as a comforter and just sucking on an 'empty' breast for comfort? - then i might dare to suggest a dummy instead or a finger. Joe won't take a dummy but i have been known to stick a finger in until he falls asleep

Joe out for a walk with dh,mil and fil - freedom for first time since he was born, feels wierd and i sitting here wondering how they are coping and what if he gets hungry and screams a lot til they can get home...oh chill out loulou!!

loulou33 · 05/11/2008 15:20

csws - sorry you're having a tough time with duncan. Has gp seen him to diagnose/treat reflux?? joe is much better now he has domperidone to stop him being so sick but doesn't help if they have acid reflux. Joe's doesn't seem to acidic so far but they can prescribe an antacid such as ranitidine. Gavsicon no good if bf as its a bugger to get into them after a feed. Its about 20ml of liquid on top of a feed into a sick-prone baby - never worked for either of mine. Dentinox seems to help Joe burp without vomiting too much but didn't you say Duncan wasn't so much sick as had silent reflux??
Hope you've had some rest to day and that tonight is a better night for you.

ooh - i forgot to tell you Joe smiled twice this morning for the first time. Was beginning to get really worried but have to remember he's 3 weeks behind.

Myjob - what's your ds up to at pre-school? DS1 pushed a little girl over last week and she is his best friend - i was mortified. He's pooed himself twice at nursery and been on naughty chair as well - that's never happened before. He's been more challenging at home, pushing boundaries, ignoring what i say to him (particularly if i'm feeding Joe) and he's being really cheeky to his dad saying he smells and he doesn't like him and wants me etc etc. I know its normal for them to rebel but we have had it soo easy with him in terms of terrible twos that its a bit of a shock now he's nearly three!!

I love being a family of four as well, its feels complete (although several people have said 'it would have been nice for you to have a girl so you had one of each!!' - erm thanks....)DH still thinking about the snip so it will have to be complete at the four of us.
