when a baby is 4 months, can s/he hold his/her head up - like all the time so you dont have to support it?

CantSleepWontSleep · 01/11/2008 14:51

Can't remember what age is normal for head self-supporting, but before 4 months IME. Dd could sit by herself at 4 months, though this was a bit earlier than most of her peer group.

wow. that would be nice! My dad is coming in Feb and wants to babysit while I go to work a couple of days but wanted to make sure quinlan will be more "stable" by then... i know it's silly, I mean, he cared for me when I was a baby... but so long ago!

Hopefully we'll see smudgey over here soon
myjob crazy how time passes so quickly!! It doesn't seem like 6 weeks have passed since you gave birth, does it? even 4 1/2 weeks seems strange. Still can't believe that smile.... amazing! You must have so much fun with her

quinlan is asleep in the moses basket!!! He settled in for a long night at 4.30pm... had not slept properly (except at breast) all day long!! We saw how "out" he was and turned him over, took blankets off so he would wake at 7, then fed him from one breast, bathed him/changed him (he was oh so happy.. ). Then fed him from the other breast and put him down again - that was at 9pm and then he slept until 12.30 when DH gave him a bottle of my expressed milk (80ml) and he fell right back to sleep and is still in his basket now. Yay!! I'm up because needed to pump or my breasts were going to explode.
dh had a really hard time with this... he LOVED those few hours that quinlan slept on his chest, but so glad he's finally conceeded to putting him in the moses basket!

star6 · 02/11/2008 03:25

up bf now. having dh give bottle of expressed milk made all the difference! Feel like i got a break and now refreshed to bf again

csws was it so early that you could only communicate through facial expressions? ha ha! .
He's sleeping again now quite soundly. Maybe we shouldn't have woke him up at 7pm.. he may have just slept through! You just never know... I used to think that getting a baby to sleep through the night would be EASY, but wow was I wrong... you just don't know until you actually have a baby!
Of course, Naomi and Joe have probably slept from 7pm-8am without waking

CantSleepWontSleep · 02/11/2008 09:55

I'm not wanting ds to sleep through yet, just to sleep in his crib or basket when he does!

OP posts:
star6 · 02/11/2008 10:01

We found that putting him down when he was really "out"/difficult to wake works well... you've probably tried that.
Also.. as I said before, putting him down on his tummy helps A LOT. We got the angel care monitor so it will alarm if he stops breathing (thanks again, loulou). But we really only leave him on his tummy for an hour or less (and neither of us sleep while he is like this) then we gently turn him to his side, then his back and he stirs a bit, but after a few minutes, he just sleeps on his back!! He'd prob sleep a lot longer on his tummy full time, but he will stay on his back for up to 2 hours now (but only if we "trick" him like I just described). We also just kept putting him in there once he fell asleep. He would wake up and want to feed... then he'd fall asleep... we'd put him back in there... over and over again, exhausting and we kept picking him up when he'd cry but back in once asleep. I think he's finally just dealt with it and realizes if he wants to sleep he will be in there (he didn't sleep at all for a whole day while we did this!). He's still sleeping soundly now...

myjob - luckily dh hasn't gone away since ds born . He was going to last week, but then figured he didn't need to so worked from home instead.

I just put ds down on his tummy in his crib when he was really soundly asleep, and he slept for nearly 2 hours .
He is windier at night so it may not work then, but we might have to try it, and then wrestle with the guilt before deciding what to do longer term. Was wonderful to have the time free though (dh and dd are swimming). I had a bath, tried on my new bra, got dressed, prepared lunch and dinner things, loaded dishwasher, sorted washing, cleaned table, opened a load of post, and sorted through all the crap that was in our fruit bowl so that I could actually put fruit in it - amazing!

star6 · 02/11/2008 13:05

Yay csws!! Great feeling isnt it??
I find when he's windy tummy sleep is even better... he just lets it out either end during sleep. or I can stand over him and pat his back until he does. If on his back it's harder for him.

The MW came this past week when he was on his belly and dh swiftly picked him up before she could see

star6 · 02/11/2008 13:08

Ok today he's really sleepy. He had that nap after feed from 7-10 then a feed (which was not as long as usual!) and sat in his bouncy seat just looking around.... I changed him and gave him one breast... he was there for about 12 minutes sucking. I took him off because it hurt and wanted to re latch him but he just came off and was asleep! Now I've laid him down to sleep and he's asleep again... maybe something is wrong

csws - for the stats we have finally decided on a name for ds - he's called Matthew.

Can't get online much at the moment, but congrats on all new arrivals.... Must dash and deal with ds's nappy now (boys nappies are MUCH harder than little girls!) so will try & log back on soon.

SmudgeyDoodle · 03/11/2008 03:23

Hi ladies. We've finally made it to the other side! Will get round to writing birth details at some point but it all went smoothly. DD born in pool and came out in an intact amniotic sac. MW said this was meant to be lucky - anyone else heard that? Feeling much better than last time. DD (no name as yet) doing well but seems to think first night home is a party so not much sleep. She's got hiccoughs at the moment and seems a bit overwhelmed by it.
Hope all babies sleeping well tonight so you're all fast asleep!

star6 · 03/11/2008 05:45

I've heard about that being lucky.... but obviously the luck hasnt started yet
maybe tonight!

CantSleepWontSleep · 03/11/2008 08:50

Oh yes, being born in the caul def supposed to be lucky.

Bad night here. Announced I was going to bed at 8:45pm as thought that ds was settled, then he woke up and screamed or fed (which also involved much screaming) until midnight. Then he slept til an astounding 1:30 before waking for another feed .

OP posts:
star6 · 03/11/2008 09:05

csws
he cries while he feeds? That must be very painful! Does he unlatch a lot?
Hopefully he'll be so tired out from last night that he'll sleep well tonight... or today
DS here started writhing around in pain at about 6am for ???? reason. Looked like he was straining to poo, but who knows... heartbreaking to watch

ajm200 · 03/11/2008 09:43

Hi everyone.

Finally have a day at home as DH has gone back to work and I'm enjoying the peace and quiet. He dragged us all out every day of his two weeks paternity leave which was nice but i could have done with some rest and recovery time. I can't catch up on either thread so I hope everyone will forgive me.

Amelia is thriving but permanently hungry so she had gained loads of weight and gone from tiny baby to newborn size in less than two weeks! Only problem is she wants most of her food between midnight and 5am. DS hasn't been in bed before 9pm for the past two weeks and up again at 6am so sleep has been a distant memory.

Only downside is that I burst into tears when the HV was here so they are coming back on Thursday to check on us.

Off to deliver invitations for DS's party. Not sure how we are going to manage as it is at the local soft play area and DH has just told me his day off had been cancelled so climbing round soft play frames with a 2 yr old and a newborn in a sling may be a challenge! The idea is making me panic if I'm honest.

CantSleepWontSleep · 03/11/2008 15:33

Have started a feeding thread star with more details.

Was hoping for a nap whilst dd at school this afternoon, but ds has decided not to have his usual long afternoon nap, but to feed constantly instead. Think we must be having 3 week growth spurt .
