Essie how did Iestyn do in his own room? We put Fraser in with his brother last night for the first time and it was great. Fraser woke only twice and Duncan slept through both times! (For some reason my DH seems to wake Fraser up when he rolls over so we needed him in his own room!) I use a baby monitor because we have all the doors shut to keep the heat in, if it wasn't so cold already I'd have just left the doors open (small house).

poppy even though having two boys is overwhelming, it's honestly easier than having just one! I'm so much calmer this time that it's easier than I expected. That's not to say there's not really tough days still - but I'm managing a ton better than last time so don't be too scared of how you'd handle another!

As for being broody - I can't decide! Both DH and I like the idea of having three kids but then we find this whole baby stage exhausting, especially as our DCs do not sleep (Fraser has never been up less than 2x a night and we have tried cc and everything!)

bitofadramaqueen I've taken Fraser's dummy away and it took about two days for him to learn to sleep without it. It was a hard two days, but well worth it!

And we're weaning now Fraser's been having cereal with formula for dinner the past few days (he's 21 weeks). So far he's not taking very much but he's always very excited for the first few mouthfuls!

bitofadramaqueen · 02/11/2008 19:15

Essie you should write a book around your theory . I really don't know what to do about the dummy. He usually only really needs it when he's tired and about to go for a nap, although I very occasionally do let him have it if he's a bit grumpy and we're out somewhere. I can't bear being the woman with the screaming child .

Some nights he wakes up loads so I've been thinking about weaning him off if, but I can't bear the thought of a few nights of screaming! Also, I'd not be able to give it back to them on those odd occasions I use it to help me out. [selfish mummy]. Then of course, there's all the advice that if they are used to sleeping with a dummy you shouldn't remove it before the age of 1 because of increased cot death risk. Ironically, after his dream feed at 10.30 he goes to sleep without a dummy at all.

Sponge I think drying nappies on radiators can make them go a bit hard. I don't know about Neenz, but I try not to use the tumble drier too often because it uses a lot of energy, however I do pop nappies in for about 10 minutes when they're nearly dry (I do the same with towels). You only need about 10 minutes to achieve that nice fluffy feeling that you just dont get with line drying.

No teeth here, but a whole lot of dribble!

Amberc · 02/11/2008 19:17

Luke definitely has a dodgy tummy today. He pooed in the bath for the first time ever. Unfortunately I was in it with him for the first time in about two months! Farking disgusting!!!! Essie I know that happened to you once. It all sticks to the side as well and won't shower away when you try and clean it. Bleugh.

Finally found some shoes that fit him today in White Company. Size 12-18 months!!!

bitofadramaqueen · 02/11/2008 19:17

Ooh, xpost! Hi hedgehog and aberdeen. Aberdeen I'm too much of scaredy cat to take away the dummy just yet. Will try and work up to it though!

Essie3 · 02/11/2008 19:55

LOL Amber! Yes, er, it's awfully greasy stuff...
Iestyn doesn't quite fit into newborn shoes! He has abnormally small feet!

Hi there

Very impressed at all the rolling. Penguin - what a star Ryder is! C was an early roller, while D can roll onto her side but no further - and still hates being on her tummy. She can sit on her own for a few seconds though!

Re teeth, I think Fleur and Iestyn had spikes as well. D's spike has stopped where it is (at about 1mm!) and hasn't moved. Very odd but quite a relief to be honest!

Aberdeen, hope you have a good night again with the two in the same room. Is Duncan in a cot still or a bed?

No weaning yet. D's reflux came back last week when I had dairy so I want to wait as long as possible ...

Oh. Top Gear's started! Bye!!!!

poppy34 · 02/11/2008 20:28

aberdeen thanks that is really encouraging - on my more positive days I do think that there are things I know now/would do differently (one of which is that a lot of things sort themselves out with time and that goes really quickly..can't believe she is 4 months old now).

amber bleurgh but lol at the bath.. not sure I want a bath with edie now...

off to watch rest of top gear and see if I can stop dh eating all the biscuits

debinaustria · 02/11/2008 21:05

Yuck Amber!

debinaustria · 02/11/2008 21:09

Shoes - Ethan doesn't wear any yet, just socks or tights on a cold day but for Christmas he'll be getting a pair of these just got to decide which. Ds1 had a red pair, ds2 had navy with a kite on, decisions , decisions....

debinaustria · 02/11/2008 21:10

oh look at these furry boots

Neenztwinz · 02/11/2008 22:16

Shoes! No way. My two are still in age 0-3month clothes so def no shoes yet!

Re drying on radiators, only cos i think it looks awful when there is stuff draped on all radiators, tho I do use the radiator in the dining room (currently our drying room). Don't like to use tumble dryer cos of the cost.

Re dummy, my sis's 2-year-old still has dummy for bed. I think if you want to wean then expect to go through three tough nights (like when we did the new bedtime routine - lots of crying but it works).

I caught Top Gear kind of by accident and really enjoyed it. it was a bit mindless tho (setting fire to lorries?!) and thought 'that's my licence fee paying for that [old git emoticon]

Neenztwinz · 02/11/2008 22:17

Cute boots Deb - would be gutted if lost one in Tesco tho at that price!

debinaustria · 02/11/2008 22:35

Not planning on bothering with the furry ones even though they are very sweet but I can't recommend the leather ones enough, especially when they start crawling and socks get lost everywhere!!

libralady · 02/11/2008 23:08

Right, back from hols, need to catch up with what's been going on but it'll have to wait as I'm back to work tomorrow - arrrrrrgh!!!!!!

ThePenguinProject · 03/11/2008 00:12

Needahand and Libra - Good luck back at your respective workplaces.

ThePenguinProject · 03/11/2008 07:59

Blimey - am I really the first one up? Delighted to boast that after a feed at 5.45am, Ryder is still asleep now. NB: This is not normal, he normally will only go back to sleep if lying on me, so I am loving this.

And after a weekend sniped at one another, DH and I are happy with each other again!

7.50am on a Monday morning and everything going well, the week can only go downhill from here...

AHiker - That's reassuring about having more than one. Thank you.

Amber - PMSL at the poo in the bath. And I'll keep laughing until it happens to me.

Deb - The fluffy boots are the cutest.

LOL @ Neenz - I run around the house taking clothes off radiators if we have anyone coming round....trying to decide what is more essential, a tumble dryer or dishwasher. If you'd asked me pre Ryder I'd have definitely said DW, but am now thinking TD. Maybe I'll change my mind when we start weaning - or perhaps not as I guess there'll be even more clothing changes then.

hedgehog1979 · 03/11/2008 08:41

Morning PP hope all is well chez penguin, very jealous of the rolling, after a week of going from front to back, Isaac will now not do anything, but he does lift his head up really well if you put him on his tummy in front of the tele
Had an interesting incident yesterday with MIL cats. Isaac decided to chew its tail . It is not a v friendly cat so I was v v worried, but the cat just let it happen. Is this normal?
Nothing much to report here, DH has my car so we will be walking everywhere today, although I might get the bus if the weather is dire

Amberc · 03/11/2008 08:49

HH - most cats can be pushed to a certain limit and seem to know that children will be rougher with them and to be more lenient! Kust be careful Isaac doesn't start coughing up furballs!

Re shoes - they are merely for warmth on his feet when we go out in the cold. Felt his feet the other day and they were chilly even in the cosy toes. We have to leave the house at 7.20am on nursery days and it's f f f f freezing! Bought these booties

ThePenguinProject · 03/11/2008 09:06

HH - R likes TV too....[bad mummy emoticon] Esp. Top Gear last night. (I'm aiming for 9-9 rather than 7-7 so he's still up to watch it).

RE: cats, I used to pull my cats tail as a child and it used to just run away, not hurt me. Usually cats don't retaliate if they feel pain, they will just do what they can to get away from it. They are also suprisingly unbothered about their tales which don't have a huge number of nerve endings. I'd agree with Amber, that your main fear should be furballs.

Amber - those boots are wonderful.

Rolf · 03/11/2008 09:32

amber - ewwww!

Deb - agree about the leather shoes. We had a lovely pair with trains on for the boys (handed them down) and DD had a nice pair too, although we've lost one. I'm going to get some for Thea.

Essie3 · 03/11/2008 09:33

Morning all! Sitting here in my pjs waiting for a very efficient (8am phone call, 9am arrival) engineer to fix the shower. And Iestyn is playing in his bumbo.

So, he's just had his second night in his own cot! Things are going ok really. Some observations...

  1. Baby monitor. Decided to use it although it's quite close. But we'll gradually wean ourselves off it using Neenz's gradual door opening scene! Mind you, in Wales I live in an old barn and the walls are a foot thick (literally), which means some of my rooms are soundproof. Good in parts... (they really need to bring out a bad mummy emoticon!)
  2. First night was a bit stressful. He didn't stir as we went to bed - good - but woke at 12.15 when we'd just got off to sleep. Then his usual 4am feed, which meant we'd been woken twice. DH not happy!
  3. Last night, he went to bed rather early for him - out by 7.30! He then cried at 9.40 so I fed him. He's not done that before. I then fed him again at 11.30 (this sounds like overfeeding but I'm sure it's not - where is that emoticon?!). Anyhow, he slept till 3.30, and then again until 8am. Earlier than usual but he slept early too. One fussing incident which we ignored (an improvement on the night before when we 'couldn't' ignore!) and we're feeling ok about it now!

UDC witnessed Iestyn's little spike. Like Dorothy's, it's stayed at 1mm, like a pinhead. But the sea of drool is incredible. I keep giving him toys to play with and they come back like dog chew toys. Ugh.

Today I'm seeking a pair of knitting needles as church is doing some sponsored knit thing - a 1km scarf. But I'll have to see how I go - I'm suffering from post-baby carpal tunnel syndrome something chronic here. (Anyone else?) I can't knit, so I will have to teach myself from the internet. If anyone else is interested in knitting a long strip, it's to raise money for The Children's Society. Let me know - my hope is it's pretty mindless kintting, no complications. If I manage a few lines I might set up a sponsorship thing. Me knitting is a big thing!

Essie3 · 03/11/2008 09:34

Can anyone here tell me - over the internet!! - how to cast on and knit some lines??

OP posts:
spongebrainbigpants · 03/11/2008 09:53

Essie, I think you should write a book on your childcare theory of dummies!! It worked for Gina!

As for knitting, don't think I could describe it over the net but I know there are websites that can, I'll see if I can find a link!

Hedgehog, IKEA aren't exactly renowned for their customer services unfortunately .

BDQ, thanks for the tips on tumble drying - I'm hoping not to use it too much cos of the cost but will just dry them off in it for the fluffy effect!

Amber, that sounds disgusting!

at all the little shoes - I'm not bothering til he starts to walk tbh!! (where was that bad mummy emoticon Essie!?)

Good luck back at work libra and needahand.

poppy34 · 03/11/2008 09:55

1.make a little loop in the wool putting it onto one knitting needle (don't make it too tight as you'll need to get a knitting needle through loop)
2.using other knitting needle, hook the wool through to make another loop (it'll be interlinked through first loop)... use the second needle to put it on first needle next to first and carry on...

Basically its a bit like making a daisy chain with each stitch (or loop) linked

knitting -(Assuming you're doing knit stitch here)..

Take the knitting needle with the stitches in in your left hand (assuming your right handed -otherway if you're not).

hold other knitting needle with your right hand -wiht this needle poke it through back of first stitch/loop (don't poke to far -you need to move needle off)

wrap wool round the needle in your right hand (ie so you've made a little wool loop over top of the stitch you've poked through)

gently pull the needle in your right hand downwards and towards you so that the loop you made with wool slips through the old stitch and you're left with a stitch on your right needle (and a whole bunch on your left needle).

Do same thing again for next stitch

if you like I can try and do video to send you of me doing it

poppy34 · 03/11/2008 09:57

sponge is right re ikea -think they put disclaimer now when you check stock that it may not acutally be there when you go to the store

stuck here with no water (well bit in kitchen) as something has gone wrong this morning..builder/plumber was meant to be here at 9am.. they are also meant to be finishing building work (painting front door -as made right mess up of first attempt - even builder conceded dh had done a better job of our old front door).. I want a shower and then to nip out to go shopping ...can't see that happening any time soon grrr...
