Seeing as it's a quiet time...

Too bad about the euromillions. We don't do the lottery as we get over-excited and stay up all night talking about it . We're the sort of feeble-minded people who justify a nanny state

All of my children behaved as though they were about to roll over but never actually managed it until they were so active that it didn't really count. Maybe they are missing a rolling-over gene. We'll see if Thea bucks the trend.Sponge v impressed with Alex's rolling.

Some of you sound quite broody . I need go go through our 0-3 month clothes with a view to getting rid of most things and keeping a few for treasure boxes, and I know it will make me feel peculiar.

bitofadramaqueen · 01/11/2008 15:54

Hello everyone - Just thought I'd pop in and say hello - have been missing you all!

Sponge - I use bamboo nappies (bamboozles) and haven't found the drying too much of an issue. I've got 18 nappies and I wash them every two days. I try and get them out on the line when I can, even for an hour or so. When they're still very wet I dont even mind if they get caught in a shower - rainwater helps soften them apparently! They normally take a full day plus one overnight to dry, though I have to confess I usually stick them in the dryer for 10 minutes when they're nearly dry to fluff them up a bit.

Did someone say they are using flexitots? How are they working out? I'm thinking of switching to flexitots when S is in size 2 nappies. Sponge there have been quite a few complimentary threads about flexitots on the nappy thread in the past btw but they've probably slipped off the page now.

Right, DH is out with S so I have to make the most of the spare time and sort out our spare bedroom but am going to try and read a few pages later to catch up.

Oh, have missed the broody chat but I can say that I'm definitely not broody . Have decided that a 2nd baby would ruin my carbon footprint for everymore

poppy34 · 01/11/2008 17:00

rolf I am broody (and dh defo is) but I am also scared.. don't know what to do for best really in terms of how long to leave it plus I ain't getting any younger

hedgehog1979 · 01/11/2008 17:24

essie Isaac has been in his cot for about 8 weeks now, we don't have a monitor at all, You lot all scared me too much when they weren't working. I gave him a tshirt that I had worn that day when he first went in and he is fine, it is also something we can take when he is in travel cot at my mums (or elsewhere)

I am definitely broody, at my NCT bumps and babes group there was a 12 day old and I was definitely ready for number 2 even then, plus I have so many cloth nappies I need to have another one to justify the cost.

BDQ I have 1 flexi tot and 10 Bamboozles, the flexi tot is definitely slimmer and just as absorbant, although he has only worn it over night once as DH did the evening shift then. I tend to use the Bamboozles overnight as I boost them with a muslin or cheap microfibre cloth from poundland [cheap mummy emotion]

Isaac is lying here on the sofa next to me, watching me type, does this mean he is ready for the internet (he does already have his own facebook account, courtesy of DH).

Weather has been awful here today and when we went out with the pushchair, the rain cover steamed up and he got very upset as he couldn't see out, understandably I think. Does anyone have any solutions for this?

Right going to watch Strictly and Merlin once have had dinner, and wait for DH to come home.

Rolf · 01/11/2008 17:24

Poppy - what are you scared about? You've had a bad time with pregnancies haven't you (hope I'm not thinking of someone else). Or is it coping with another child? We had to be prepared to take a real leap of faith to have DD2 (and, to some extent, DD1) - none of that blind optimism we had when planning for DS1 and DS2.

Hope I'm not being intrusive.

DH's new study is pretty much finished! He is so happy and it is lovely to have him working at home more often. It will take us forever to sort out the chaos of papers and stuff but the study looks great.

ThePenguinProject · 01/11/2008 18:14

Essie - Can't help re: putting cot in another room. Ryder is still in with us. It would be much better if he wasn't, but his room is still a disaster zone...DH is in there now trying to sort it out a bit.

Paro - I couldn't finish the book PS I love you because I found it too sugary but I loved the film. Watched it whilst pregnant and sobbed my heart out. That guy is gorgeous!

Rolling - Ryder rolls all over the bloody place. He mainly does it when I'm not looking thou, I turn my back and he's off. I watch and watch with the camera and he's completely still....

Hello Dramaqueen!

bitofadramaqueen · 01/11/2008 18:49

Thanks hedgehog. Nothing wrong with getting boosters from poundland. I bought them in my pre-baby days when only the best would do, but now I'd probably go to poundland. Sponge if you're looking for night-time boosters for your nappies I used this (the fleece triple layer booster pad) and S is fine from 7pm till 7am with it. Think I'm definitely going to go with flexitots when he's in size 2's.

Hello back at you PP!

Parofleurmapu · 01/11/2008 19:54

Hi BDQ hope you sorted out your spare room

Fleur has spent all day blowing raspberries!!! And food is definitely going down well now, lots of lovely nappies!!!She gummed a rice cake smeared with pear puree today and some of it disapperead!!

Went for a walk round our village this arvo and found this!!! Good old spanish

poppy34 · 01/11/2008 20:06

lol at photo paro rolf not intrusive at all... helps to share - some of it is worry re pregnancy due to previous problems but a lot of it is about how I'd cope with two.. I love edie to bitsbut found the whole new born thing (bf, attention she requires) overwhelming - I am not sure what I've got left to give to another one if that makes any sense and am worried about depriving them or not being able to do it iyswim. Maybe you can shed a bit of light on your experience as you've got three I think?

spongebrainbigpants · 01/11/2008 20:15

Ohmigod, don't ya just love IKEA?!!

Checked on line and by phone that the highchairs and trays were in stock, drove all the way to IKEA Wembley (2 hr round trip for us), collected highchairs (we were buying five as we were getting some for our NCT buddies too), went to tray section - empty box. Went to customer information - the box above the empty box has trays in but we can't get it down today because it would mean closing the aisle to get the forklift in, come back tomorrow!

I pointed out I had checked stock, driven for an hour with a four month old baby to buy the bloody things and I wasn't coming back tomorrow but wanted my trays now! Was sent to customer services and spoke to a very nice lady. Told her she could either get the trays down or send them to my house, she said they don't deliver to my area. Okay, I said, you can either post them to my house or I will climb up the shelves and get the sodding things out of the box myself!

That did the trick! Was that aggressive aggressive or passive aggreseive - not sure!!

Anyway, we now have our high chairs and are awaiting our trays (which we've paid for so they better bloody well arrive on Tuesday as promised!).

poppy, lol at IKEA being like Disney - if that's the case remind me never to waste my money going to Disney Land!

As for knowing when to have a second child - I don't think there's ever a right or a wrong time. I know siblings who are close in age who get on like a house on fire, but my sister and me don't speak anymore and there was only 17mths between us. Similarly, I know siblings with big age gaps who are best of friends. It all depends on so much - I wish I could start trying now because of my age, but unfortunately I'm still a bit of a blimp after pg no 1 so have to wait until I've shifted the weight. I think you and dh will know when you're ready .

Essie, Hedgehog and BDQ, thanks for the comments on bamboo nappies - have placed my order. There is another poster on the nappy thread who is very about flexitots but I'm going to give them a try and return the others if I don't get on with them. BDQ, have ordered some of those boosters too, thanks for the tip .

Essie, we have a monitor in our bedroom cos Alex is across the landing, but we normally hear him anyway - crying in stereo! Hope Iestyn's first night in his cot goes well.

Hedghog, really sorry for scaring you about the monitors . Although tbh I wish I'd never bought the bloody thing - Alex slept through two nights ago but I was up at 3am cos the flaming alarm went off. I'm too paranoid to stop using it now though .

I think Isaac definitely sounds ready to start surfing btw! Very at him having his own FB page - how cool!

Rolf, good to hear about dh's study. We've just had quotes for building work to divide our lounge/diner to give space for dh to work from home in peace. Can't wait to get it done now.

PP, lol at Ryder only rolling when you don't have the camera - bloody typical!

Thanks for all your lovely comments about the vid btw .

Right, I'm off, that was a mega post - sorry!!

spongebrainbigpants · 01/11/2008 20:16

Paro, love the photo!

poppy, x-posted sorry - hope I wasn't putting my foot in it on the 2nd baby thing.

poppy34 · 01/11/2008 20:22

no sponge you didn't ..the getting your body back thing is also part of my rational too -and totally agree re siblings getting on -there is no good rule on that.

ikea must really be like disney given how happy dd was when she came back - was totally into daddy all afternoon afterwards so there is no accounting for tastes with babies ..and good on you for standing up to yourself (the whole world must have gone to that ikea as that was where dh went and one of my nct chums was there)

poppy34 · 01/11/2008 20:25

hedgehog I've got no monitor - mainly cos I wondered where it would end in terms of worrying if I got one

debinaustria · 01/11/2008 22:05

Evening everyone

Guests are gone,Lovely comments from them as I dropped them off at the airport, and they were returning customers so I actually got some job satisfaction today! house back to ourselves - yippee - that means more decorating starting Monday, don't you just love stripping woodchip?

PP - With his rolling Ryder sounds like that character in Little Britain who gets up out of his wheelchair every time the carer turns away.

Paro - Great Photo - LOL, Had a lovely lunch thanks

Amberc · 02/11/2008 09:31

Not read anything yet but quick question - Luke's poo nappy has got weird black 'fibres' in it this morning - loads of them. This also happened yesterday. The only thing I can think of is that on both days he had an inch of banana. Anyone else had this? What do you think I should do? Other than that he's fine. Ta x

spongebrainbigpants · 02/11/2008 11:22

No experience myself but found this:

banana poos!

Looks like it's perfectly normal - weird!

Parofleurmapu · 02/11/2008 11:29

Hi Amberc Yes I think thats fine, Fleur often has these in especially after banana and she seems fine always too
Dont worry,no probs x

Parofleurmapu · 02/11/2008 11:37

Yep sponge what they say there is true we have all sorts of wierd and wonderful poos!!!

Neenztwinz · 02/11/2008 13:46

Spoke too soon ! DTs did go down great at 7pm again but woke on and off all evening and Esther woke at 11.30, 12.30 and 2.30 . They are really snuffly which is why I think they are sleeping badly. Hopefully she will start sleeping through again soon. They are polishing off all food I give them so perhaps giving them quite enough yet.

Sponge, absorbancy for me is no problem even with cotton nappies, they only have one nappy on from bathtime to next morning (unless they poo - rare) with a booster and they never leak. Maybe they pee less than other babies . I don't like to tumble dry or put them on radiators so the drying is a real issue. That's why I love my terries (they are just not so reliable sometimes).

essie, I wasn't offended about the nappies. Esther hasn;t had a dummy since that one night - I can;t be bothered going up and down stairs putting it back in . Re sleeping in own room. Yes since 7 weeks and I have never had a monitor on. Sometimes I think they wake and I don't hear them, but they settle themselves. If they don't settle then I hear them! Why not try putting him in with all the doors open - you'll def be able to hear him, then you can try closing one door at a time to check you still hear him. I think having a monitor on when the baby is literally 10 yards away is a bit much (tho not criticising anyone, I know most people do it).

Sponge, no that was assertive, the very best way to be. Well done you !

ThePenguinProject · 02/11/2008 13:58

Amber - I can't find the thread, but I read somewhere about a Mum taking her LO to hospital because he had worms only to find out it was just banana fibres. So don't worry.

bitofadramaqueen · 02/11/2008 15:13

Essie - S has been in his own room for quite some time but we have a baby monitor. I think one of us would probably still hear him without it though. I dont always hear him and can be quite surprised when DH says he's been up X times in the night, but I'm pretty sure I always hear him DH is away . Oh, and didn't do anything special to help with the transition to cot - just started putting him in there and he was fine.

Can I ask a question about dummies? Apologies if you've all had this chat while I've been away... S wakes up quite a few times most nights and will go straight back to sleep when we put his dummy in. I dont know whether we need to try and wean him off the dummy or not and wondered if anyone else had given it a go?

Sponge glad to be of service re: boosters!

spongebrainbigpants · 02/11/2008 16:25

Neenz, thanks for that - out of interest why do you not like to use radiators/tumble dryers for drying?

Was just looking on the nappy lady website and there's a pic there of triplets who are using cloth nappies - respect!! Makes we feel a wuss for not getting round to doing it sooner I have to say!

Out of interest, just looking at the thread title - do we have any other teeth on the thread yet?! We all got excited about Dorothy's little pegs and then . . . nothing! And she's one of the youngest babies on here .

Dh is watching the Grand Prix at the mo - I hate it!

Amberc · 02/11/2008 17:38

Thanks re the bananas - yes that's what it is but he's not right today in that department so again I think I should leave real food for a bit.

BDQ - same here with dummy. Luke doesn't need them at all unless it's sleep time. He goes to sleep with one in and then wants it if he wakes again.

Essie3 · 02/11/2008 18:42

BDQ Neenz asked the same question, and I have the same question too!
My answer to Neenz was inconclusive really. Iestyn has a dummy, and usually fusses at least once before his middle of the night feed (3-4am), and goes back to sleep when the dummy is put back in. Strangely, he doesn't tend to do it after that night feed. (This isn't set in stone!) At the moment, we're observing, and if he starts waking lots of times and is settled with his dummy, we'll wean him off.

My current plan is this: all v. scientific, I'm sure you'll agree. We have newborn dummies, but we won't buy the next size. When it stops being effective for him because his mouth is too big then he'll not want it. Hell, it's no worse than some of the theories peddled by childcare gurus!!

OP posts:
hedgehog1979 · 02/11/2008 19:12

essie love that theory about dummies.

SBBP I had a similar experience in Ikea a couple of years ago went up to Croydon to buy a CD tower for my sister, checked before left home and they had them in stock - Got there none in stock, Then went to Bristol (was stayiong at mum and dads) same thing checked they were in stock, none left when we got there. Wrote a really strongly worded letter to Ikea HQ and heard.... nothing

DH has just woken Isaac and I up by yelling obscenities at the Grand Prix, Isaac is now sitting quite contented on his lap, although there was crying when he was woken up.

Looking forward to the return of Top Gear later on this evening
