Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Denny185 · 07/10/2008 12:35

........I was just thinking the same thing

VictorianSqualor · 07/10/2008 12:39

Because I started BLW and Alex has shown he is able to eat by himself.
I wouldn't have given any puree or baby rice or the like if he hadn't already shown he was capable of eating.

Denny185 · 07/10/2008 12:42

So thick question about BLW, (Im ob not doing it otherwise I would know the answer) do u start that b4 26 weeks?

chipmonkey · 07/10/2008 12:46

No, Denny, if you do VS will be after you!
Have to say, I like home-made purees. I used to make one for ds3, an AK recipe with cauliflower, cheese and tomato. But I used to eat more of it than ds3!

Denny185 · 07/10/2008 12:47

....and how do you know they r actually consuming anything - pile of carrot sticks to mushed pile of carrot sticks, how do u know when they start consuming anything?

scorpio1 · 07/10/2008 12:47

the thing about BLW is that they pick up, and put in their mouth, and eat the food by themselves, so they are ready to eat when they manage that (as they would in nature iyswim?)

i am too lazy to puree this time, though mimi is having some stuff on a spoon too. Do not fancy porridge BLW, thanks!

KnitterInTheNW · 07/10/2008 12:47

Good question Denny. I don't really understand all of BLW either.

VictorianSqualor · 07/10/2008 12:48

You start it when they can sit, grasp and have lost their tongue reflex.
Basically the theory is that a baby will be physically able to feed themself once their gut is ready.
If, for example, you sat a 3 month old in a highchair and put some carrot batons on the tray they wouldn't be able to eat it. Nor would a baby that wasn't internally ready, they would fail somewhere in the process, so you can start it when you wish.
I started on saturday (alex is now 25 weeks) and he managed to eat quite a lot. (I know he ate/digested it because his poo was horrid) so he no longer has a virgin or immature gut.
FWIW he only had about a third of a pouch because I was worrying I might have been making him eat something he didn't want, and I handed him the spoon rather than fed him it myself.

scorpio1 · 07/10/2008 12:48

Just remember food is fun till they're 1

Mimi is deffo getting it, as she chews and swallows, and her nappies have changed colour. also you can just see toast gone, etc

Denny185 · 07/10/2008 12:49

I know Chipmonkey I am ready to duck LOL

VictorianSqualor · 07/10/2008 12:50

They don't really mush it up tbh denny, it's crazy, almost impossible to think, but they actually eat the food.
DP and I were like we'd seen an atom being split

OP posts:
Peachy · 07/10/2008 12:51

Oh come on VS LOL

You now I support you with the BLW thing but you've got other kids pmsl- there is no wat to make a baby take what they don't want bar a drip! Surely you've experienced jaw lockdown?

scorpio1 · 07/10/2008 12:51

they do chew it, like us, but more exaggerated, and tear bits off with gums (here, anyway!)

Denny185 · 07/10/2008 12:52

Lots of crossed posts there, so heres another question, why cant you use tounge reflex as your guide 4 weaning with purees, they will still push puree forward if not ready.

VictorianSqualor · 07/10/2008 12:53

I wasn't sure if Alex was trying to eat or just shove the spoon in his mouth though peachy iyswim.
Everything goes in his mouth atm, I doubt (hope?) he wants to eat DSs socks

OP posts:
scorpio1 · 07/10/2008 12:53

peachy - jaw lockdown ,lol. its the best when they blow raspberries into the food you are offering!

VictorianSqualor · 07/10/2008 12:54

Because it's more than just tongue reflex, the other signs have to be there too.

OP posts:
Denny185 · 07/10/2008 12:58

But if G could sit and grasp (which we know he could, nice photos) I dont see why Knitter couldnt give mush instead of lumps.

Anyhow I will stop now coz this could go on 4 a while

KnitterInTheNW · 07/10/2008 12:58

The only thing George has managed to eat any of is rice cakes. Cheese, toast, banana, pepper, cooked carrot, nope. And he's 28 weeks now. I'm sure if I wasn't doing any purees he's he feeding from me 24/7 by now!

VictorianSqualor · 07/10/2008 12:59

Sit, grasp, chew and swallow. Not just sit and grasp.

OP posts:
KnitterInTheNW · 07/10/2008 13:00

he's he? He'd be I meant.

Peachy · 07/10/2008 13:00

Ultimately its parental choice and instinct.

If I had blw ds1 i'd have been stuffed- at 18 months we realised his viosion was then oerating at 25% (much better now)

You do have to trust your own instincts imo

SalLikesCoffee · 07/10/2008 13:18

Nothing to do with when ready or not, but out of interest: I asked paed yesterday whether there was any benefit to either blw or pureed, and he said no, but you'll hear more about blw now as it the "flavour of the month". He said to go with what works for you and your baby, which is usually a combination of both.

He said while the argument re less preservatives (but that's not applicable if you use pres free pre-prepared or homemade anyway) applies to blw, you have to be careful to give a combination, e.g. ensure you give them protein rich finger foods as well. With purees it's easier to mix the different types.

VictorianSqualor · 07/10/2008 13:20

That's true sal, as far as I have seen.
BLW and Purees are just two ways of weaning, either are perfectly fine from 26weeks. It's just that BLw can be started sooner as there is less risk.
Anyway PiLs are ehre so g2g or they'll think I'm rude

Have fun vs!

R is slightly embarrassing when I feed him in front of others, as he makes it look as if he's never been fed in his life (luckily while looking at him you might suspect the opposite). I gave him some Plum puree earlier, and he kept opening his mouth and lunging for the spoon, getting so excited, standing up in his chair to reach it quicker. He ended up with food over his brow, his elbow, his nose! I've ordered some of those babylicious frozen purees and some vegetables with tomorrow's Ocado delivery.

I had to laugh at Peachy's description of babies having had enough. R is exactly like that - I can stand on my head, if he's not hungry, he refuses to eat. He'll chew on things (usually my toe if i'm not careful, i suspect he's got issues), but will not let me put anything in his mouth. At all.
