Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

VS - It's all very well brushing it off with a 'you bloody wally', but the fact is that you did upset Sal and I, and possibly others too with what you said, and how you said it. I think you need to be aware of how you come across sometimes, we know you mean well but occasionally it can be upsetting for others. I know of a couple of other ladies on this thread who just haven't mentioned what they're doing re weaning, because of the response they'd get. I think that's sad, surely we're all here to chat about what we're up to, not to be scared to mention certain things. I needed to get that off my ample chest and feel better now.

Sal - I have one of these hand blenders that I use to puree stuff. Really easy to clean, only problem is that it only really purees, won't just break stuff up like a blender would on pulse.

SalLikesCoffee · 07/10/2008 18:17

Ooh no, we ate homemade pizza a lot when I was growing up - if you look at the individual ingredients (if you build your own obviously) it can be a very healthy choice and is a good way of sneaking new vegetables (e.g. artichoke according to my mom) into children.

R's fine with lumps, so that's why fork's ok if only doing a tiny bit, but wondered if it would be worth making a batch of bases, e.g. sweet potato or apple puree etc that i can defrost and heat as and when needed to mix with whatever i've got that day. Might have a look for a cheap hand one in Woolies (thanks Scorpio) as the blender I've got might make too much (I'm not that keen on purees myself )

Shocked at paed saying breastmilk hard to digest! Is he my mil by any chance? (She's not a paed, but seems to think she is )

scorpio1 · 07/10/2008 18:19

i think thats a good idea, having a base for other stuff, i know what you mean

Oh yes pizza is good; if you make your own base sauce you can whizz up peppers etc in it too, no-one notices!

SalLikesCoffee · 07/10/2008 18:38

Sorry Knitter, x-post. That would be perfect really, as I want something that's really easy to clean and as it's for bases, pureeing is fine.

Peachy · 07/10/2008 18:40

Sal I batc cook a lot so does work; blender i use tenner in tesco btw

SuzeM · 07/10/2008 18:54

Scorpio, how do you make the base for pizza?

scorpio1 · 07/10/2008 18:56

I just puree up peppers, mushroom, grated carrot etc and it makes a small amount of puree stuff; then stir into tomato puree (little tin thing of), then use that as base. Not very glam or anything but fine.

VictorianSqualor · 07/10/2008 19:02

Knitter, I apologised for any offence caused. More than once.

I will not sit here and be hung for it.

If people want to start weaning early regardless of guidelines they should at least have the courage of conviction to be able to talk about it.

Being 'scared' to say something is ridiculous, as is the way you all decided to wait until one of you dared speak up before anything was said, I think it's obvious it's not coincedence that as soon as one of you said something the rest pile in.

If you 'know' these people are too 'scared' to speak up what's that then? Emailing about it and talking about how they daren't say because of other people's reactions? How cowardly.

If someone has something they wish to say about me they should say it, just because I don't tip toe around people doesn't mean I can't be spoken to and I don't take kindly to hearing I'm the talk of private communication.

Lastly if you're that offended, even after I have apologised twice on both this thread and that, by what someone on the internet says with regards to your choices that you all seem so secure in (not) then maybe it's time to turn the computer off.

LadyBee · 07/10/2008 19:11

hello - experiment with cooked carrots yesterday worked..there was definitely evidence in the nappy today, so I'm going to start. Decided already I was going to do a mix of puree and finger food and still feel like that's going to be right for me so have a few (several) questions:

  • would I be able to give a rice cake as the finger food 'version' of baby rice?
  • peachy, you mentioned needing a couple of exposures to check for allergy - so do I just give a new food every couple of days?
  • is there an age for bread? noticed mimi had toast, so is wheat just another thing that needs to be tried?
  • what about meat? and dairy?
LadyBee · 07/10/2008 19:11

sorry to post and dash btw, in the middle of bath and bed.

Denny185 · 07/10/2008 19:12

Sal i use hand blender for puree or normal mixer 4 lumpier consistancy, be warned potatoe turns into slime coz of the starch, better to mash/chop

scorpio1 · 07/10/2008 19:13

-yes, mimi loves them

  • tolerances, i think peachy said a new thing every few days
  • mimi had toast, gluten is another 'try' thing iyswim
scorpio1 · 07/10/2008 19:14

meat, dairy - fine, big chunks of meat or just whizzzzzzzzz it up with pot and veg etc. yog is cool, ditto fromage frais, big chunks/grated cheese

use low salt stock cubes though

KnitterInTheNW · 07/10/2008 19:14

ok, apologies accepted, thankyou.

BTW no one was talking about you behind your back, it was just the odd remark.

Still friends?

scorpio1 · 07/10/2008 19:15

you can put stuff on rice cake/toast too, hummus, marmite...

Denny185 · 07/10/2008 19:16

PAL, I think Im just wierd I prefer the weaning nappies, more solid and easier to flush off re-usable liners

PortAndLemon · 07/10/2008 19:16

Yes, rice cakes work quite well.

Gluten (inc. toast) is suggested to be avoided until 6 months however early you wean, IIRC, so maybe hold off for another ten days if you are being careful. I think meat may be another "from six months" thing.

VictorianSqualor · 07/10/2008 19:16

LadyBee
would I be able to give a rice cake as the finger food 'version' of baby rice?
Rice cakes are fine, not sure what you mean by a version of baby rice though.

  • peachy, you mentioned needing a couple of exposures to check for allergy - so do I just give a new food every couple of days?
am not peachy but yes basically, introduce an allergen at a time, I think you need three or four exposures, Peachy said at least two , to check if there is a reaction.
  • is there an age for bread? noticed mimi had toast, so is wheat just another thing that needs to be tried?
Alex's first food was toast, bread is fine, wheat is the allergen
  • what about meat? and dairy?
meat and dairy fine, dairy an allergen again so don't feed say cheese on toast until you've done both allergens iyswim.

VictorianSqualor · 07/10/2008 19:17

oh yh gluten in bread too.

OP posts:
SalLikesCoffee · 07/10/2008 19:18

someone on here would know, but i think there's something about if you've got an allergy or eczema etc in your family, that you should wait longer than average before you try certain things. off to investigate, will report back if not beaten to it.

scorpio1 · 07/10/2008 19:19

dh has been at work 12 hrs now!

SalLikesCoffee · 07/10/2008 19:27

Ah. If you've got a history of food intolerances, it is suggested you try withholding that (e.g. wheat and dairy) until around 12 months.

PortAndLemon · 07/10/2008 19:50

Everyone said substantially what they've said today (including Sal saying that she'd been scared to mention weaning on this thread) back in early September. That's not exactly waiting to speak up or talking about you behind your back.

Kaybee hasn't been back to this thread since then, by the way, which is rather sad as I know her DSs have both had ringworm recently and you could have given her the benefit of your experience about that.

But it sounds as though we're all friends again .

LadyBee · 07/10/2008 19:55

right, ok. I meant that I would most likely give a puree version and a finger version of something - so today gave baby rice, which was new, and more steamed carrot chunks to play with/eat.
So a solid 'version' of baby rice = rice cake, can give that and pureed carrot tomorrow and then prob next day will try something else?

Just read through some more posts, I did rather jump into the middle of it all didn't I

This is what I have discovered in the last day

  • I should put the carrot chunks round side down, not flat side down. Otherwise the flat surface of the carrot adheres to the tray and DS just chases it around around around and around and can't get any purchase.
  • I need more bibs
  • I should probably get some plastic to put under our highchair.
  • Baths are now meaningful.
Denny185 · 07/10/2008 20:02

Or forget the bibs and eat naked, saves the wear and tear of your washing machine.
