Hi guys. Have a good weekend.
eandz Babies are much more effieciant at getting milk out of the breast. You are not super dry. No matter how much you pump, it is not a true reflection of your milk supply.
I am still lovin having two boys. I am even maybe thinking a third! Its such a magical wonderful experience I cant imagine never doing it again. Babies rock! {grin] xx

foxytocin · 11/10/2008 10:42

eandz some women never get on with expressing. it is a skill you learn. briefly put, you have to develop a routine of pumping at the same time everyday to fool your body into producing enough milk for the pump. It also helps to focus on something except the pump while pumping or to 'zone out'. at first you can pump for 30 mins and get drops but by the end of a week, you can get appreciable amounts (I used to get about 5 oz) with using a good pump in just about 10 mins. I was using a double electric pump and pumped everynight plus at work because I sent EBM to nursery for dd1.

MoonlightMcKenzie · 11/10/2008 10:57

Lollyheart 5 weeks is a fantastic amount of time when you've been banging your head against a brick wall and mastitis is horrid. I'm sorry you didn't get the help you deserved.

MoonlightMcKenzie · 11/10/2008 11:17

Aren't we clever?

Biggogglyeyes · 11/10/2008 11:19

i think my mum had done a runner as only seen her twice since baby was born!! ... plus its the same with dp's mum too as she doesnt get involved at all due to her hubby. As her hubby doesnt want her to get involved. we do see her for 20 mins at Xmas and about 20 mins on their bdays but thats it! Great MIL!!

Biggogglyeyes · 11/10/2008 11:33

im in shock......my mum had rang!!! HOORAY!!! and is taking my DD1 out for the day.....HOORAY!!!!!!!!!! i can go back to bed with a banging headache!!! as my dd2 is a slow feeder as it takes her an hour to drink 4-5oz as she falls asleep in between nearly every oz! !!!! her biggest oz that she had drank is 2oz...its never a 3 or 4oz in one go (like my dd1 was)

becaroo · 11/10/2008 12:44

hello ladies....

sorry i havent been on since tobys birth, but its been a bit frsught. We had a family bereavement (the day he was born) and i have been quite ill from blood loss/anaemia.

despite desperately wanting to bf it has been a nightmare....toby got dehydrated so we gave him formula top ups but then he started feeding at the breast for hours at a time (4-6) then still be screaming and drinking 60-70mls of formula. After 2 weeks i gave up and he is now ex ff. Am heartbroken as i feel such a failure (again) i am having to wear pads as i am leaking which i find upsetting as there is obviously milk there (unlike lsat time).

I got 3 mw to check my latch, tried all the positions and rang LLL helpline all with no effect. He is now on 3oz every 3 hours. He now weighs 8lbs 13oz.

he is beautiful and his brother loves him. I am still feeling rough, but it will take time to get over the first few rough days i think. so pleased to hear you are all doing so well with bf i am very ....

love to all x

becaroo · 11/10/2008 12:46

...i also tried pumping with a manual and elecrtic pump - most i got was 1 oz - tried to give it to toby via syringe and he spat it all out

does anyone know when my milk will go? I havent fed him regularly for 5 days......

becaroo · 11/10/2008 12:48

....i also tried the going to bed for 2 days thing....didnt work either

eandz · 11/10/2008 12:51

please tell me more about this going to bed for two days thing?

becaroo · 11/10/2008 12:56

you just stay in bed doing nothing but feeding basically...he still screamed within moments of being off the breast, despite feeding constantly....

imoscarsmum · 11/10/2008 12:56

I feel so emotional that we've all popped now - how utterly fantastic and brill. (Aside - god bless to those who joined our thread but never made it here).

Isnt this just fab!!

becaroo - I too had awful times trying to bf and Charlotte is now ff, with one bottle of expressed every day. I've come to terms with it (finally) - did feel crap for a while but you've don your best and there will be loads of other things you will excel in - just be a great mum for now.

I am sooo pround - 3 weeks and 3 days post c-section, dp and I made love this morning!!! Charlotte fed at 6.30 am and we did the deed at 8.30am. Sorry if TMI but I am chuffed to bits!

imoscarsmum · 11/10/2008 13:06

Btw, hearing that mums here are also going onto ff makes me feel better and not so crap - I know how hard most of us have tried, so it's not just me not trying my best. It does help to hear this.

I may go to Manchester xmas meet - anyone else??

MoonlightMcKenzie · 11/10/2008 13:15

Biglips I know how you feel. I had dreams of one big happy extended family with lots of input from GPs but it would seem (despite their promises) that it will sadly not be the case!

Oh my goodness becaroo I'm so sorry about your bereavement, and that it came at what was supposed to be a very happy time.

becaroo YOU are not a failure at bfing. The system has let you down. There is nothing from what you have said that implies you couldn't (can't still) bf, although the stress of the bereavement plus anemia and being ill will have no doubt made things doubley difficult. I'm sorry you got no joy from LLL. IF you want (but I can quite understand that you have moved on) contact another helpline (some bfc are just more experienced than others) as it isn't too late.

Good luck with whatever you decide and hope you start feeling better soon!

MoonlightMcKenzie · 11/10/2008 13:26

imoscarsmum Most of us will be ff shortly if we are a sample of the population. BF should be easy and come naturally, but our whole culture and support system works against it.

Some of us are lucky and have strategies, a support system and environment that helps us fight it, others have a baby/mother combination that makes bf easier.#

You certainly shouldn't have ever felt crap for it not working out for you.

Biggogglyeyes · 11/10/2008 13:38

DD2 is 2 weeks and 6 days old today.....weve had a few smiles for teh past few days as def not wind as its mainly when my dp is pulling faces/tickling her chin. She is very tickliest, just like her big sister!

meglet · 11/10/2008 14:50

moonlight seeing the final list of all our babies brings tears to my eyes [big softie emoticon]

DD had a screaming fit an hour ago and it turned out to be a huge bogey in her nose. I have one of those suction gadgets (from Boots) to suck the bogeys out and it worked a treat! As soon as her nose was cleared she settled down. They are really addictive BTW, I might get one for DS - but I doubt he would stay still for long enough .

eandz · 11/10/2008 16:08

OHH my god, I am SOO angry!

so my mil (who i like v much) for our 1st year anniversary present gave us a cleaning lady. When I became pregnant my mil decided to pay for the lady to come twice a week. (we're lazy so we accepted).

in the past month the woman has broken a vase, dented a wall, bleached our distressed leather sofas and this morning broken to pieces my breast pump. (not to mention while trying to sterilize our bottles left them in a pot of boiling water soo long the bottles are now misshaped.)

thing is, she's a bit older and if she isn't considered 'elderly' already will be soon.

how am i going to tell her not to come around anymore? any ideas? and she also brought gifts for me and baby when he was born so i feel horrible!

DebitheScot · 11/10/2008 17:35

think I'll have to get one of those nose things meglet. DS2 is quite stuffed up at the moment and while it's not stopping him sleeping it is making it hard for him to feed as he can't breathe through his nose very well. This morning I was using my little finger to pick the bogeys out his nose and that was just gross!

Mmmm don't know about your dilemma eandz but I do know that you do need to pluck up the courage to say something. Its no good paying money for a rubbish service.
I wish someone would buy me a cleaning lady for a present, that'd be amazing.

eandz · 11/10/2008 17:46

debithescot
i'd send you mine, but she'd break everything in your house.

i just told her we're going to be in dubai indefinitely.

DebitheScot · 11/10/2008 18:31

The average weight of all our babies is 7lb 10.5oz

The lowest is 1lb 8oz and the highest is 11lb 8oz

notcitrus · 11/10/2008 18:40

becaroo - i'm struggling to bf too and the helplines weren't much help - tried national helpline, LLL, and nct and took over an hour to get a non-answering machine. Lady was very nice and referred me to someone local whose number didn't work.
Repeated a few days later and managed to visit a lovely nct volunteer who had some tips, which helped a little.
Then had hysterics on MrNC a couple days later and packed him off to Mothercare to buy every overpriced cushion and a pump - the strap-on baby table has helped and watching a video online suggested i was getting too much areola in his mouth - helped a bit more.

but then got incredibly sore nipples and i think lanolin was making them worse - and A was Mr Grouchy all last night and fed for hours. i'll see a gp on mondayin case it's thrush, and try the pump, but if those don't help then i'm introducing some formula at 6 weeks.

I'm so sore I keep not wanting to pick himup and cuddle him,and can't sleep which is totally what I don't need. I figure he must need me-time and energy more than breastmilk in the long run.

He's been a right grump all day, wanting to feed most of the time, and sleeping and waking to whine every 5-10 minutes. I suspect the feeding pain is part of the problem. Do mostbabies squeak and scream as part of their sleep cycles? If so how the hell does anyone sleep long term with them?

Actually, how many babies are breastfed , sleep in a cot in their parent's room, and on their backs, all for 6 months minimum? Because loads of my friends now have children, and I'm not sure I know any that have met all those criteria (only one meets the first two, and she refused to sleep on her back, only on her side or front).
Looks like everyone's a failure as far as NHS recs are concerned...

meglet · 11/10/2008 18:58

notcitrus doubt many (any?!) babies meet all those criteria up to 6 months. With DS he was ff at 8 weeks, was in his own room by 10 weeks and would always turn over and sleep on his front from about 16 weeks. I was an obsessive mummy about keeping the room cool and he was in gro-bag though.

DD will be in her own room in the cot when she is too big for the moses basket, probably in 6 weeks or so. There's no room in our room for a cot. But I do sleep with the doors open so I can hear every gurgle and squeak.
