Rofl Ellie!

MissVictoriaNSqualor · 06/09/2008 09:53

OMG!!

He slept from about 8:45 (when he was finally settled) to

MissVictoriaNSqualor · 06/09/2008 09:55

Oh, also, babies have a sleep pattern of 45 minutes, so if they don't get 45 minutes they are not suitably refreshed, so if the nap lasts less than that you are meant to get them back to sleep.

If a baby is not getting enough day sleep they get fatigued, which means they find it hard to go back into another sleep cycle after the first one, hence why Alex was waking up every 45 minutes.

LadyBee · 06/09/2008 10:14

Hi well done VS, and glad you found the thread, I've been reading the book but kept getting distracted yesterday so couldn't write advice.
I follow that 2 hrs max awake time and it really seems to work for Benedict. I've also started doing a feed before bath and then another after before doing quiet wind-down stuff and into bed, which gives him a chance to get really full, but also stay awake long enough to get burps out. Before I was doing feed, bath, book/cuddle, bed, but he wouldn't settle (still hungry) and I'd end up feeding him to sleep, which would mean he'd wake after 30 mins crying with wind.

I have a question about feeding in the mornings. I'm not sure whether this is still related to him having a cough, but for a while now Benedict has been bringing up what looks like the entire feed after his first feed in the morning. This mornings I'd definitely describe as projectile vomiting, he was still lying down and it came out in a big spurt and reached the wall behind me.
He normally wakes at 6:30, gets his nappy changed and I feed him around 6:45-7.
I just wondered whether I should wait a bit longer after he's woken up before feeding him, maybe to give his system a bit of a chance to get ready? I don't know what's going on..that's all I can think of.
He seems perfectly happy, I just wondered if maybe he needs a chance to get a bit hungry before his tum can cope with the big feed.
I'm waking up engorged, so feel quite keen to feed (he's been sleeping through the last 4-5 days now, fingers crossed it continues), I would have thought he'd be hungry when awakes but maybe I'm feeding him too early.
Any ideas?

Denny185 · 06/09/2008 10:34

Too much in one go? If your engorged prob milk a plenty with faster let down maybe just too much for him to cope with. Could you try in stages, feed for 5 mins, stop wash bum/change nappy, feed for 5 mins, stop and get changed, feed for 5 mins stop and have chat etc

Peachy · 06/09/2008 10:38

sad

Denny185 · 06/09/2008 10:46

O Peachy, I hope one of the boys has moved it and it turns up 4 u.

Glad ur night was better VS

SalLikesCoffee · 06/09/2008 12:00

Peachy, I'm so sorry to hear that! I know you said unlikely, but could it by any chance have fallen out? (Grasping at straws I know.) for you.

Good to hear your new system is working so well, VS.

Ladybee, I'm sure it wasn't funny at the time, but I laughed at the "hitting the wall" comment, hehe. Let no-one say B isn't powerful!

Quiet morning here. R woke up his normal 12, 3/4 and just after 6, but dh has been doing them all, and let me sleep until after 10!!! He has to go away for work in a week (only couple of days though), and not only will I miss him, I'll also miss all the support he gives with R - he's doing so much, I know I'm spoilt.

Peachy · 06/09/2008 12:36

bas's robe

sal- it was you looking?- poshtotsonline.co.uk had lots of nice outfits? so did jackanory (websie addy forgotten but search jackanory cwmbran_ they're near us though so f you swa anything in there I could check it out for you?

Peachy · 06/09/2008 12:39

try again!

SalLikesCoffee · 06/09/2008 13:44

Peachy, thanks so much for that! When is Bas's baptism again?

There are some beautiful gowns and outfits on there. Thanks also for the offer to check - that's very kind and much appreciated. But as my mom will be making it for me, website pic should be fine, I just want to get a picture of something I really like. She makes evening dresses etc a lot, so should be able to do it from a photo.

LadyBee · 06/09/2008 14:56

I think I'll try the small feedings - if I can prise him off, he's very determined these days, I don't actually latch him on he just lunges and goes for it.

Might also get up and express first, while DP does the nappy change and has a little chat. I think this might mean it takes a bit longer for my supply to get used to the lack of night feedings but as there are no guarantees he'll stick with it I'd don't mind having a bit of oversupply...hopefully if there's another growth spurt it'll help me cope as well

Ok, another from LadyBee's book of 1001 random baby questions:
How long do babies like using those door bouncer things for? I mean, up to what sort of age? We don't have one and I've been thinking about getting one to give me another option for entertaining him, as I do sometimes feel like its groundhog day as we rotate through nap, feed, playgym/floor/bouncy chair several times a day when I don't go out. Also, he doesn't seem that comfortable in his bouncy chair as he seems to want to sit more upright and strains against the recline a lot.

Denny185 · 06/09/2008 16:27

Usually till they are cruising round furniture or they exceed the weight limit on it. Didnt Sal manage to buy 2 on e-bay?

DS loved his but DD2 not v keen, but then she is a bit of a lazy lump so not surprised really.

LadyBee · 06/09/2008 16:37

Sal, you've been thanked

EllieG · 06/09/2008 19:26

Peachy, sorry 'bout your camera. What a bugger. Some people are just shitty.

Glad you had a better night with DS VS.

I am still arguing with DH about best way to get DD to bed - I do a version of PUPD unless she is in one of her 'I am going to scream if you pick me up' moods, and seems to work. He lets her cry and pats/picks up every 5 mins. Personally, I think her screaming can be avoided if you just do a bit more cuddling at the beginning. She is just not very good at getting herself off to sleep, and I would rather teach her gradually. BUT - I appreciate he is doing it his way and I must not moan or he will not do it. And he doesn't put her to bed every night so I guess she is not going to be psychologically harmed by it.

Is funny though - every night I wish and wish I had a break from putting her to bed, but when I do, I sit here listening to the monitor and feeling guilty and sad for not being with her.

Am going to turn off monitor and have some gin. Is my night off tonight should bloody well enjoy it!

EllieG · 06/09/2008 19:28

I thought door bouncers were not recommended? Not sure why mind.

My mate has a thing called a jumperoo though, and her kiddies love it.

SalLikesCoffee · 06/09/2008 20:36

Thanks for that link Ladybee, am all cheered up and now.

Re door bouncer - sorry, if I knew I would have given you one, but I've passed the second one on to a friend. There are loads on ebay if you're interested. Loads, honestly, ending 2 minutes apart .

Ellie, I think you might be right, I've heard somewhere (way before ds) something in that line, but tried searching before I bought mine, and couldn't find the reason again. I'm trying to persuade myself that 15 minutes once per day can't do too much harm. Hope I'm right. What I do know is that it is very important that they need to crawl, so "walkers" are bad for them as it means they skip part of the development - it also teaches them to walk incorrectly (on their toes). Crawling also needed for good hand-eye coordination and if not it can lead to learning difficulties. Not sure if some of these reasons overlap with a bouncer.

Peachy · 06/09/2008 20:45

iirc it was something to do with bone development, but ok if limited? bas ardl uses his tbh

Christening is Oct 12th, have ordered invites but going to get cake (and prepared food, for once i just cant be arsed) from M&S ordering service

LadyBee · 06/09/2008 21:29

hmmm, maybe I'll just keep Benedict on the floor..he's happy enough there, it's just me getting bored. Besides, he's sooooo far away from crawling he needs all the help he can get

I have just had a chocolate icecream and brownie sundae.
I am never going to lose weight. I have no self-discipline

SalLikesCoffee · 06/09/2008 22:06

Your Christening sounds lovely, Peachy. I know it's not for everyone, but it's always been such a special day in my family. M&S sounds perfect - since nothing like that in my home town, my poor mom has to do the outfit, cake, etc etc. I'll help with the actual work, but she's really good with the finer points (I'm rubbish).

Ladybee, I'm never going to lose weight either. And to make matters worse, I don't actually think I care. I've just finished TWO magnums... Double caramel and almond. I wish I could feel guilty, but I now only feel a bit nauseos (sp?? - too lazy to look it up).

Denny185 · 07/09/2008 13:30

2 in a row, well done Sal

The issue with door bouncers/walkers is the encouragement of a toe walking gait in little ones. TBH I think it started becoming a problem when some lazy mums would put their children in for the best part of the day. I use them (but wont say too loudly incase my friend whos a paed physio hears) but for v limited time (max 15 mins) and generally only a couple of times a week.

SalLikesCoffee · 07/09/2008 13:59

Denny, I'm so glad you've said this, as I was a bit concerned I'm missing something vital and ruining Roelof's development! It is great though for when you have that quick shower (obviously I have him playing on the bathroom door then) or when I have to finish some piece of work or make an urgent call but don't want to leave him bored out of his mind crying on the floor!

Denny185 · 07/09/2008 14:02

It gives them another view on life, just not too much of a good thing and all that. DS loved time on his feet but DD2 so far really not bothered and theres not much room in the door bouncer already as shes quite long of body.

LadyBee · 07/09/2008 17:21

two magnums - that's excellent Sal, it's never occurred to me that it was possible to eat more than one

Just had some friends over for tea and scones (homemade, by me!) and a natter. It was the first time 2 of them had seen Benedict, but I feel ok about it, we didn't see a lot of each other before I was pregnant but it's always lovely to catch up properly when we do.

DP is giving DS his bath, and the house is looking quite tidy after our sweep around pre-friends, so I feel very chilled. Nice feeling

VictorianSqualor · 07/09/2008 18:12

All three of mine have loved their bouncers and none of them have had issues with it.
I probably use A's every other day(?) he won't spend more than half hour in it without getting pissed though.

Had a lovely dinner today cooked by MiL, we went there for dinner, and DP left me in bed til 10:30am today

Alex's naps seem to really be working, same pattern last night as the night before...

I'm off to the shop in a sec to get some wine and chocolate and am going to watch wife swap then braveheart in bed
