Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
scorpio1 · 08/08/2008 11:54

Sagitta - i didnt realise how much i wanted to do it until she had a growth spurt and HV suggested formula at last feed and i cried saying noooooooooo i dont want to! I expressed one boob and fed from the other at the same time, so DH got up in the nights to feed. GOD he is a star

Can you do the same? give dh a kick up the bum. Can he take dd1 out?

VictorianSqualor · 08/08/2008 12:03

Yes, Sagitta, as long as you don't add too mnay formula feeds your milk supply should still eb good enough to get back up to full speed,

HOWEVER, she won't 'go back to normal' if your milk supply doesn't increase, so if you want to use formula for that feed you should express at other times.

What she is doing by feeding more is trying to increase your supply, which won't happen if you supplement her with formula, so you're just delaying it rather than escaping it, sorry!

If you ask mums that formula feed they don't have noticeable growth spurts really, just a point where LO gets an extra ounce added to their bottle, this is the equivalent of our growth spurts but it takes a little more to add that extra ounce iyswim.

DH gets so snappy with both dcs, that it just makes everything worse, especially in the middle of the night. He flounces off and says that he's got to get some sleep, but I have only had one 4 hour stretch of sleep, once, in 3 months. - and that was on Wednesday (oh happy day!). We are trying to let her cry settle herself a bit more at night while DH is on holiday, but its quite a painful experience!

sagitta · 08/08/2008 12:07

Good point, VS. I only agreed to formula because I understand its harder for them to digest (very mean mummy emoticon) and that she would then wake up less often. She's 3 months tomorrow- surely she doesn't need to feed 3 or 4 times a night any more - and that's normal, not a growth spurt. Growth spurts seem to be a feed every hour or two.

VictorianSqualor · 08/08/2008 12:08

We've been allowing DS to cry a little more now too, He has started deciding he doesn't want to be in bed at bed time, because he isn't as 'drunk' off his last feed.
Where he used to feed so much he was almost unable to do anything but smile so he didn't argue at bedtime he now feeds much more efficiently, but if he is downstairs he feeds at 8:30, falls asleep at about 9:30, so I've taken to feeding him at 8:30 and putting him to bed at 9pm, he can whinge all he likes! I have gone in to check him the last two nights and found he is practically crying in his sleep though, so left him to it.

scorpio1 · 08/08/2008 12:10

Millie still gets drunk before bedtime, so just goes down when she is more or less licking rather than feeding iyswim. Sometimes awake-ish, sometimes not.

She self-settles in the day and the odd night though.

Formula was very temptimg this last week.

VictorianSqualor · 08/08/2008 12:11

If you're desperate to cut down on ngiht feeds I'd give her a normal breastfeed an hour before normal time, then again at normal time, then only offer water in the night, except for one feed, choose which one you're happy with.
With me a 4oclock feed is fine, It means I get two straight 3/4 hour stretches of sleep, so I'd give only water at other feeds, and offer the breast at the 4:30 wake up.
Be warned, this may NOT work, but it is how you can see whether she needs the food or is waking and needs help getting back to sleep rather than a feed.

scorpio1 · 08/08/2008 12:12

also remember the 3 day rule - 3 nights and it may work.

sagitta · 08/08/2008 12:23

Thank you! That's what I was hoping to do - just do a 2ish am feed, then a 6 or 7am one. I tried giving her water once, but she went completely beserk! Should I keep trying, do you think?

I've been doing a feed an hour before the bedtime feed for a few weeks, but it doesn't seem to make any difference.

MommyHasaHeadache · 08/08/2008 12:32

Waaaah - was so hoping we were onto a New Thing - namely Sleeping Through The Night... but it's not to be after 2 nights of bliss, DD was back to waking at 3am and then 6am last night. Today Mommy really does have a headache! Vertigo is still lingering - I've been awake pretty much since that 3am feed cos of the vertigo - I find it hard to lay down because I spin so much - so again - waaaah! My physio doesn't think there is much she can do for me because the exercises she gave me to do make me feel so rotten, so I am feeling despondent. Hoping the specialist will have something up his sleeve when I next see him for my MRI results.

VS/Sal - thanks for finding out how to make the changes to my profile!

LadyBee - the MRI was very noisy, and I suffer from claustrophobia, but I must have been VERY tired as I managed to fall asleep in it! Had a very good 30 min kip! I hope you are feeling better now and are over your cold?

DH and I celebrated our 4th wedding anniversary yesterday (the day we concieved DD I might add last year! ) I think for that reason it will always be an emotional day for me! We are off to my fav restaurant in the area (Chapter One) for a nice lunch on Sunday to celebrate it.

Had Gigi's innoculations on Wednesday - they were so, so horrible - we were both crying - yes I am a wuss! Thankfully she seems to get over them the very next day, so I suppose that's good.

Tell me something - when do you stop needing to wind them? DD seems to randomly burp herself these days... is that normal?

VictorianSqualor · 08/08/2008 12:47

They don't really need winding once they can move themselves around.

I am coming to the meet-up, forgot to say, I spoke to DP about it and he's going to give me the money

I farking hate bad table manners.

DD's friend is here, causing a riot as ever, but sat at the table mouth open scoffing, ad then talking with her mouth full.
ARGHHHHHHHH

OP posts:
scorpio1 · 08/08/2008 12:48

eating with mouth open is my worst thing ever - dss does it and it makes my blood boil!

VictorianSqualor · 08/08/2008 12:55

I can't stand it!!!!

OP posts:
MommyHasaHeadache · 08/08/2008 12:59

Yay looking forward to meeting VS - pity you aren't coming Scorpio

Agree with the table manners thing - bleurgh!

LadyBee · 08/08/2008 13:08

Odd things going on in the Bee household, yesterday DS wouldn't settle away from me, lots of crying and wanting to be upright, today so far for both naps I've just sat him on my knee for a little quiet contemplation of the curtains in his nursery, then put him in his cot, tucked him up and gone and done some stuff while he's still awake - come back to find him sound asleep. Without a peep!
The first time was an accident, I just put him down because I needed to go find something but because he went off to sleep without my help, I thought I try it again for this lunchtime nap and he did it again
So now I know he can go to sleep without my help, but the question is will he...
He has always been pretty good at self-settling once he's been asleep for a while, but usually needed rocking/patting/shushing to be lured into sleep to start off.

I hope he's not ill

Sometimes I think DS is never going to reach that milky drunk stage in the evenings, but often if we just have a small break from feeding and then go back, within about 5 mins he gets there.

Oh and there he his. He's psychic. Knows exactly when I'm online and in the middle of a post.

LadyBee · 08/08/2008 13:23

I'm going to leave him a for a bit. The big wail is done and I can hear snuffly sounds that I think are him eating his hands so lets see whether he settles.

Yes! table manners, eating with mouth open is a pet hate for me too.

Oh VS you seem to have the same reading list as I have on my amazon wishlist - I'm ordering How to Talk.., Raising Boys, and Unconditional Parenting - probably all a bit premature but seeing I have some time and have regained the concentration for reading now I thought I'd get them and see what I think and then see whether DP and I can agree on our strategy beforehand.
I think a lot of the time the way we relate to one another comes down to patterns of behaviour that become habits (you know, the couple who only ever talks to each other in a sarcastic, put down sort of way; the habit my neighbour has of yelling to her kids, without getting up to see what they're trying to show her, etc etc) - so I hope that if we set up some patterns of how we talk to each other, and DS, and practice it while he's tiny, hopefully it'll just be 'the way we do stuff' rather than a conscious effort when/if troubling times strike later on.
That's my theory anyway. I just hope I don't hate what the books say when I actually read them. They do seem to get a fairly good response from mumsnet though.

LadyBee · 08/08/2008 13:25

Nope he's grumbling. Guess that's him awake then.
Byee.

MommyHasaHeadache · 08/08/2008 13:27

LadyBee - that is what Gigi does - I put her in her cot when I know she is tired and off I go - sometimes she has a little 'chat' with her toys 1st, but I find she generally drifts off herself. A far cry from what it used to be about a month ago - would not go down in her cot - only in my arms! Thanksfully (touch wood) that is over now!

sagitta · 08/08/2008 13:46

Agh - sorry to be dense - what was your old name, mommyhasaheadache? Sorry, too tired tot hink straight.

sagitta · 08/08/2008 13:46

or write straight

MommyHasaHeadache · 08/08/2008 14:27

Lol - Mum2babyRoo!

scorpio1 · 08/08/2008 14:52

if my last period started 8 weeks ago; why haven't i had another one? Have not been night feeding apart from the last week. Am not pg unless i tested too early (last week).

Denny185 · 08/08/2008 15:13

Dont know Scorpio, I had my first when DD2 was 5 weeks, second at 9 weeks and 3rd.......still not arrived. Im not night feeding either so dont quite know what my body is doing, will rpobably spring it on me when least expecting.

scorpio1 · 08/08/2008 15:15

oh so they can be all over the place? when i FF the others they were bang on regular straight away, must be the BF hormones or something.

Wouldn't mind being pg at all though. Was thinking about re-testing in a fortnight or something.

Denny185 · 08/08/2008 15:17

I think its within normal limits to be all over the show, with the other 2 I didnt have any periods at all till stopped feeding.
