Hello people, is anyone there?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
claireyBOOOO · 03/11/2008 17:52

Skid I agree, at least half of ds's feeds are just comfort but mil was saying it like they all are and that he gets no nutritional benefit from bf. She thinks he should be on cows milk by now. Add to that my mum telling me on Sunday that breastfeeding past a year is for the mother not the baby and I am really feeling pressure to stop...

I was planning to cut down at 1 anyway by offering cows milk a couple of times a day but now I feel like I am doing someything wrong by continuing to bf at all . Will have a look at your thread.

RE birthdays, I started planning today. Those of you on facebook should be able to see the invite and of course you are all welcome. No idea what to get him though....any pressie ideas? Already have ride-ons, tunnels, tents, mountains of plastic crap from dd so am really stuck!

BouncingTurtle · 03/11/2008 20:46

Clairey - at your MIL. You are doing nothing wrong in wanting to continue to bf! I'm going to continue as long as ds wants it. It is total rubbish to say there are no benefits for baby past a year. However if you do want to stop that is absolutely fine too - not that many people get to 10-11mo, so pat on the back .
But when you choose to stop bf should be up to you and because it feels right for your circumstances, not because someone tells you too! And the same goes for continuing to bf, if you really don't want to continue then don't just because others tell you to!
However long you bf for is NOBODY's business but yours.

Skid - I just looked at your thread, but have no advice I'm afraid!

BOOkleSpookle · 04/11/2008 00:14

Hi all!

Skid, DD definitely likes her breastmilk too and definitely drinks more of it in one go than she will cows milk! I don't know how to stop either, it was so easy with the boys as they were happy to drink other milk. I am very ready to stop but also am not if that makes any sense at all?!

Clara, welcome home! Glad you had a great time in Thailand, sounds great! Poor DD1, I'm sure she will settle down soon when she gets used to being home again, hopefully before January when you are back in your own house again.

Melly, really glad you were signed off of work! K sounds so cute all snuggled in her snowsuit! I struggle to get anything on Evie, she is far too wriggly!

BT, CTC is for everyone so you should still get some even without you working. I guess it will go down for you because Daniel will not be in childcare, there is quite an allowance for that I think.

Suey, did you sort your pill situation out? Hope you enjoyed your spa although I can totally understand you missing DD, I don't like being away from my DCs.

Clairey, that you were so ill! You poor thing, glad you are on the mend now though. Another one here stuck for present ideas for birthday and Christmas due to mountains of DSs' old toys! Any ideas anyone? Evie is also only BF morning and night now, she has cows milk in the daytime (on the advice of the HV who said it was fine as long as she ate a balanced diet) although she never takes much from me. I am quite on your behalf at your MIL's comments re: breastfeeding! Someone said to me the other day that DD doesn't need it anymore because there is no nutritional benefit after 3 months! ! I would ignore her and do what feels right for you. DS may be taking some of his feeds for comfort but he is only a baby, what's the hurry for him to grow up?

Arcadie, bless your DD's obsession with your boobs!

Hi Macdoodle! Sorry to hear your H is being a pain again, hope you are okay.

Louise, blimey, you are organised! I had not thought about DD's birthday yet but will probably have a little 'do' at home for a couple of close friends and family or something like that. Got a bit longer than you to decide though as her's is not until a couple of weeks after Christmas! Poor DH, hope his shingles get better soon!

Evie has been trying to master walking, you can see from her face how much she wants to but she doesn't have the confidence to do it yet (not that I am in any hurry) but yesterday she managed 5 steps before she fell over! [very proud mummy emoction] she steadied herself after each step too but hasn't done more than one step since. Bless her, can't believe my little baby is growing up so so quickly!

suey2 · 04/11/2008 07:47

yep, sorry skid: by the time I stopped bf, dd was only taking 3 milk feeds in 24 hours: and has always been happy to drink from a bottle.
Beckle I changed my pill, even though my gp thought it was balls.
Dd much more confident on her feet, now. Walks independently most of the time: only crawls when speed is of the essence.

skidaddle · 04/11/2008 10:02

Good morning everyone on this momentous day (hopefully) - make sure to remember what you are doing today because in years to come people will ask if you remember the day that Barack Obama became president - I am so excited at the prospect and vaguely tempted to stay up all night watching the results but I know that would be very foolish with 2 children to tend to tomorrow - anyone else excited?

Thanks for all the advice re stopping BF - have decided to aim to get down to just morning and night feeds by 12 months and take it from there. If I'm honest there's a big part of me that doesn't want to stop but I must admit I am feeling pressure to stop even though I am fortunate not to have people say it to my face very often.

Completely echo what BT said clairey - people are unbelievably ignorant about the benefits of BF - you are doing the absolute best for Dougie by continuing and if anyone argues with this they are just misinformed, plain and simple. It's hard and I find it difficult to follow my own advice but remembering that you are doing the best for him might help when you have to put up with listening to this rubbish from your family.

suey and bookle - wow at your walking babies!!

birthday presents... hmmm well we have no money atm so it won't be big but maybe books or something else that will last a while...

claireyBANG · 04/11/2008 10:53

DH is really excited too skid!

Keep me up to date on how you get on reducing the bf, I'll be following in your footsteps a couple of months later. TBH I have had enough of ds wanting to feed every 5 mins but I don't want to stop completely yet.

Wow aren't December babies a clever lot?! Think we have quite a few walkers now but it does seem to be the girls! DS walked loads one day in Botswana (7 or 8 steps at a time) but has done nothing since. If you try to get him to walk now (not that we are shamelessly coaching him or anything )he just laughs and sits down.

DS is completely destructive atm, destroys everything in his path. DH was a bit shocked I think at just how hard work ds is ALL DAY and noone in Bots could handle him. People kept saying "Let me hold him a while" and we'd go back 5 minutes later and he'd gone through 10 people where noone could cope with him!

Come on, someone must have an amazing present idea that I haven't thought of....

claireyBANG · 04/11/2008 10:55

Skid, BT while I was ill MIL told me I shouldn't bf ds as it would make him ill. It did give me some satisfaction to inform her that actually bf him was stopping him from getting it!

becklesparkler · 04/11/2008 14:20

I am excited too Skid, hoping this will be a positive change for world politics to have a democrat in the White House again (fingers crossed - don't want to jinx it!). The fact that he is a black man too is just fantastic!

I wouldn't exactly call DD a walker yet, she has a way to go before she is proficient at it! Still excited about her few steps though

Clairey, I am probably going to be really dull and buy DD some clothes for either Christmas or her birthday - another few weeks and she will be due the next size up... Possibly get her some bath toys too as she loves being in the bath, other than that, no idea!

Wizzska · 04/11/2008 17:19

Skid, I'm really excited too. I'm going home to watch the Daily Show with John Stewart. DH and I have become a bit obsessed with it recently, since we came back from America. Anyone else watch it?

DS so far has only taken a couple of steps. He prefers to crawl as it is faster. I can't wait to see him walking, but mustn't wish time away, they grow up quickly.

OP posts:
suey2 · 04/11/2008 18:33

oh I love that show wizz! John Stewart is ace.
I have been pretty obsessed with this election : god I hope the polls are right. The thought of having john maccain and the mad woman palin is just too awful. Ww3 anyone?

BouncingTurtle · 04/11/2008 21:03

'The thought of having john maccain and the mad woman palin is just too awful. Ww3 anyone?'

yep I think that pretty much sums it up

Dh is taking his phone to bed and will check when ds wakes up for a feed.

Oh and i would like to cut down the bf to just morning and night time too, when ds is 1, but ds is rather reulctant to eat as much as at nursery when he is at home with me!

mellymooks · 05/11/2008 07:50

Hooray Hooray Hooray am so thrilled to wake up to positive news from the other side of the pond!! It truly is a historic day.

skidaddle · 05/11/2008 08:59

yaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy, he did it. Wasn't his speech amazing? It made me cry. I can't believe it has actually happened even though we knew it was coming. Second only to Nelson Mandela in my lifetime I think.

I was sure DS would be up for a feed at about 2am so i could check the results and last night of all nights, for the first time in about a month, he decided to sleep through until 7.30!! Got up at 6 to watch it all on TV though!

Am sooo happy

mellymooks · 05/11/2008 09:09

Me too Skid, it's fantastic. His speech was wonderful, and it just fills me with hope.

suey2 · 05/11/2008 09:17

wonderful wonderful wonderful! If anyone had any doubts about him that speech was just inspirational! What a historic day! One of those 'where were you when' days IMO.

Wizzska · 05/11/2008 11:08

It feels good doesn't it. A ray of hope, but the burden of expectation is now with him. I really hope he can live up to it. I was so relieved when I woke up this morning.

OP posts:
BouncingTurtle · 05/11/2008 12:54

'O brave new world, That has such people in't!"

I think it is utterly, utterly fantastic. DH is a firm Obama fan after reading his book 'The Audacity of Hope'. He believes he is a visionary

Jesse Jackson was crying too, Skid!!

It must be bittersweet for Obama though, his grandma dies on Tuesday Apparently, she did cast her vote though!

skidaddle · 05/11/2008 13:01

ha ha BT I knew I was in good company (although bit of a turnaround for Jesse after slagging Obama off when he thought his mic wasn't on!)

It is sad his grandmother didn't live to see it but I'm sure she knew he was going to win.

I am also going to buy his book as a celebration and probably badger my DCs to read it in years to come...

Definitely one of those 'where were you' days suey - sort of wish my answer could be, glued to the radio/TV instead of snoring contently in my bed!

Am finding it hard to get any work done as I keep going onto the BBC website to check it's really true...

skidaddleMcCainHereComesOBAMA · 05/11/2008 14:47

just seeing if my for-one-day-only nickname is working...

skidaddleMcCainHereComesOBAMA · 05/11/2008 14:48

oh good it is

Wizzska · 05/11/2008 16:56

I like it Skid.

OP posts:
Wizzska · 05/11/2008 16:58

I wish I'd spent today somewhere exciting instead of it being a normal day at work. I want to say, oh I remember when Obama was elected, I was up the Eiffel Tower or in Times Square or something.

OP posts:
claireyBANG · 05/11/2008 17:22

LOL Wizz, all I'll be able to say is "I spent all day in my pyjamas for no reason other than I had nowhere to go and never got round to getting dressed"

Wizzska · 05/11/2008 17:45

Clairey - actually spending all your day in your pjs sounds quite nice. I don't think it would go down very well at work though sadly.

OP posts:
BouncingTurtle · 05/11/2008 21:32

I think I would get cold in my pjs as my office is bloody freezing!
Like the new name Skid!!
