OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Had 8 month check today - waste of time TBH
GP was very unconcerned about hand foot and mouth, contagious till spots clear and in poo for 4 weeks after ....poor pretty baby all spotty

BouncingTurtle · 03/09/2008 21:18

Mac - sorry to hear about Lily, weirdly was talking about ti at work today, my Lab supervisor caught it a few years ago!

My HV is going to do my 8/9 month check in October, when I'm off, I think.

Caz10 · 03/09/2008 22:15

Hi all!

Babies in our area are apparently getting their letter re 8mth check at approx 11mths......but ours is the only GP practice still doing them, all others have scrapped it, so guess I shouldn't grumble!

Bf-ing/weaning - there are a couple of threads on this in bf-ing at the mo...I thought I'd be cutting down too by now, or rather that she would...

as it is, she is getting 2 smallish bottles during the day, and getting a bf from me in the morning, late afternoon and just before bed - at weekends all feeds are bfs...

Have ordered that "how weaning happens" book from amazon to try and enlighten myself!

I was a bit worried that when I went back to work and she got bottles she might drop the bf-ing altogether but it certainly hasn't happened...pleased in one way, but if it had happened it would have made up my mind iyswim!

So now have it in my head that we'll aim for just a morning and a night feed by 12-14mths - but I have this nagging feeling in the back of my head that she might have other ideas!!

macdoodle your poor LO. and grr to missing waterbabies too, we did it for 2 terms, it ain't cheap! but v v g are you enjoying it?

claraquitetirednow · 04/09/2008 11:09

Thanks for your messages re dd1. Insy (welcome back by the way), I think she is better when I am not there but the nursery leader says she doesn't want to join in with the other children, prefers just to sit and observe. She has always been a bit like this tbh, she is good one-to-one with other children but not one to join in with a big gang. A bit like me and dh so we shouldn't be suprised! I am sure she will be fine eventually. Tomorrow is day 3 so we will see how she goes!

You have all done so well with your bf'ing, well done. Skid - dd2 drinks (water) really well from a beaker now, so it's definitely worth trying with one rather than using a bottle if that is what you would prefer.

I hadn't even realised there was such a thing as an 8-month-check. We don't get anything here as there is no health visitor system. What do they do at the check? dd2 seems fine (now the teeth have finally appeared!) so I am not too worried. We weighed her on our bathroom scales and I think she is about 20lbs. Not sure where that is on the line?

Amani · 04/09/2008 16:25

Hello everyone,

Hope you and your little ones are well. Not been on for a while, life has been crazy and hectic with my girls. If you can recall, I last came on because my DD2 was just not eating, so now we have been referred to a dietician as she is just not gaining weight. Also she is not talking (i.e not saying mama, dad etc at 8 months) so been told that it might be her tounge tie that is affecting her speech so HV refered her onto another specialist...

Fingers crossed for us, it just seem to be one thing after another......

Amani · 04/09/2008 16:33

sorry should have stated clearly that she needs to see a dietician as she does not eat despite trying baby lead weaning, baby rice with milk, varius purees, finger foods...she's not interested at all and does not drink that much milk either....

claireybee · 04/09/2008 16:44

Wrote a huge long post the other eve and then my phone died.so annoying!insy glad you came back and at ttc but sorry you are having probs.i would really like another, though not yet but cant see dh agreeing. Had a couple of good nights with ds waking just twice and the 2nd being at 5/6 am so once really i suppose.last night was bad again though, seems to be no logic to it! Havent really thought about stopping bf...will just go with the flow!dd had bottles of formula morning and night and cows during the day from cup for a couple of months after she turned one-with her i kept the formula up until she started eating well.ds eats well but may do similar,bf morning and night and cows during day. See how it goes. Macdoo poor lily:-( and at her weight-dd weighs just 25lb at 2.3! Clara hope dd1 gets happier at nursery soon

suey2 · 04/09/2008 17:01

gosh amani, you must be worried. Ask about anaemia: a friend of a friend had the same problem and after some iron drops totally discovered the joys of food.

BouncingTurtle · 04/09/2008 20:34

Amani - I hope you get a solution quickly for your dd.

DS is 8mos to but he is still babbling! He has said "mamamamama" but not dada, should he be saying words now then?

suey2 · 04/09/2008 20:40

bt millie is the same, only mamama (dh well pissed off )

Took lo to baby clinic today- she hasn't put on any weight in a month! Dr explained it may be growth spurt, but i have to get a urine sample (er..... HOW) to double check

insywinsyspider · 04/09/2008 21:08

suey - I think you can get something to put in their nappy... not sure, only done it for a boy and thats easier

bt - ds1 is almost 2.5 and only just started talking, babbling is fine at 8 months, I'm hoping ds2 only ever says dada ds1 often used to stand at his cot shouting 'mummmeee, mummmeee' at 6am

amani - hope you get some answers/help with everything, it must be a stressful time, I hope it gets easier soon x

clairey - don't be not actually in the ttc game at the moment as now been referred for blood tests and scans so irritating, sure they'll be loads of you with BFP before me

clara - 8 mo check (from what I can remember) is something like - weight, general health, making noises, eating stuff with texture ie some finger foods or mashed stuff, hearing fine, sitting, getting mobile? not sure about this but we had to go back and see our HV at later date as ds1 was 'only' rolling at 8 mo's which was ridiculous... they have pincer grip (finger and thumb) so can pick up raisins etc and can pick up two blocks and bang them together... sure someone else on here who's recently had one will know!

claireybee · 04/09/2008 21:24

Amani i cross posted with you earlier and couldnt write another post at that time, hope you didnt think i was ignoring your concerns. Anyway just wanted to come back and say dd was the same about food-didnt eat anything til 9months and nothing remotely resembling meals until 13.with her it was like the less she ate the less bothered she was about food so the hv suggested giving her treat foods eg chocolate to get her interested. It is a bit of a gamble cos you dont want her to end up like that girl who only ate dairymilk but it did work for dd,giving her the odd bit of choc and loads of raisins, grapes etc got her to at least put other foods in her mouth. Speaking of eating chocolate,dd went to the cupboard earlier and tipped a whole pack of cookies on floor, went into kitchen and she and ds were both sat there cramming them into their mouths,ds was covered! Hope to have proper internet week after next so you wont have to put up with many more of these incomprehensible paragraphless posts!

Caz10 · 04/09/2008 21:29

Good luck Amani! But honestly I wouldn't worry too much, although if she is not taking milk too then obviously that's a worry - but I;ve read lots of dcs on here not eating for ages, way later than 8mths.

Birth to 5 book says mama dada etc at around 12mths!
and "6-20 recognisable words" by 18mths..I'd be very surprised if an 8mth old was talking!!

clairey to your dcs cookie fest!

claireybee · 04/09/2008 21:41

Suey i had to get a wee sample from ds when he was poorly but they gave me a bag thingy to stick over his willy. Bt ds mostly just says babababa, mmmmmmmm which means he wants milk-usually accompanied by tugging at my clothes and lunging at me,gaga and luhluhluhluhluh-we arent even getting mama or dada.he does say buh for boo though and ducks down as he says it-VERY cute! No 8 month check here,we only get the 6week one and then nothing until they are 2 when we get a questionnaire.still waiting for dds though!there is a weekly baby clinic you can go to and the hv asks a couple of questions when (if)you go.have only been twice with ds

suey2 · 05/09/2008 07:29

LOL caz

suey2 · 05/09/2008 12:23

at work today as one of my employees is off on hols.
I just want to say that i have the utmost respect for you guys who have had to go back FT. I am missing millie so much and i now realise how lucky i am otherwise to work only 3 days per week.
hope all is well

skidaddle · 05/09/2008 14:42

suey - i'm the same having been fulltime (nearly) for the last two weeks - it is awful and no mother should have to do it (if she doesn't want to). Thank good ness I am back to normal hours next week
Oh and for a urine sample you get like a little pad to putin their nappy - still tricky to get though. My DD didn;t put on any weight in a month when she was about 8 months - think they often just grow in spurts and is usually nothing to worry about (in fact she didn;t put on any weight in 6 months when just two - but think that was all the chub coming off)

clairey at your DCs stuffing their faces with biscuits - that's the sort of thing that would have worried me with DD (all that sugar - will it kill her?) but I wouldn't bat an eyelid with DS - in fact he got a black eye this morning when he pulled the fire guard onto himself (my strong strong boy ) and I thought nothing of it, bad neglectful mother

amani - they are supposed to START babbling at 8 months so i wouldn't worry on that score at all - the weight gain must be a worry though although if she seems happy in herself i always think that is the most important thing (as a completely unqualified non-medic!). Good luck and try not to fret

insy - yes that sounds right for the 8 month check - Milo has his on Monday. A bit excited as it means i can spend all morning with him while DD is at nursery - is that sad?
