...glad the family was able to see you through it all OK

(told you my internet connection was lousy, didn't I?)

Anyway, must go and rescue little one from mil and dh. Hope to get back online regularly once we're home.

simpson · 18/07/2008 17:40

Hello to all

Went into town to get Ds a pair of new shoes. What a waste of time!! Was hpoing to get a pair in the clarks sale but of course did not have anything in his size. The only pair even full price were awful and £30. So did not bother. Don't mind paying for shoes that look nice. Will have to try another day.

DD starting to get into the solids. She has had loads of pureed carrot this evening. Going to try some fruit tomorrow. Also got her weighed this morning 14lbs 6. Only 4 ozs this week but she is now FINALLY rolling over. Did it for the first time at the baby clinic and has not stopped!!

Ds loved his party. They all got a prize which was nice. Lots of hugs from careworkers there although he is going back for 2 wks in sept before starting preschool. Toilet training next week which I am dreading...

justkeepswimming · 18/07/2008 17:44

simpson - re shoes, there is a website (will look it up in a mo) where you can get 'last seasons' shoes v cheaply once you know what size to get. i get ds some sandals, they were posted quickly. agree re price and selection.

here it is

hi rockdoc - see what i did there

back later, milk time...

justkeepswimming · 18/07/2008 17:55

bouncy castle - we have an electric pump from my birth pool so it took half an hour to inflate. i have it indoors atm as rain predicted. no rain today tho so could have had it outside, ah well. thought could deflate slightly to get it out for sun if it's dry then but wouldn't really want to bring it in wet.

filly - well done to your ds, v brave

madmouse - agree with what others have said really. allow yourself the time to be shocked and upset, it's not self-pitying or anything like that, just necessary i think. most of the time i think i am over ds2's em c-s then something will come up that makes me think of it. i allow myself a good wallow then try to move on, each time it seems to upset me less....(know not the same level of trauma tho).

gingeme - might give the ii another go, dh is much keener than me. the benecol (and other brands i don't know names of) reduce your cholesterol. so you can swap your butter/marg for the benecol(flora active?) one and it helps you lower it just be eating, fab
not sure how they work or if they're good for you otherwise but dh used it for a while and his went down.
what i wanted to know is say a mars bar has x cholesterol, how many benecol drinks did i need to drink to counteract it...? no-one seems to know...

plus i think my dad has sterols on prescription for his cholesterol (think they're called sterols anyway).

simpson - well done to your dd for rolling ds2 nowhere near still, or sitting...but has 2 teeth 2 at the top have come through and i can feel/imagine about 3 or 4 more up and down. ds1 was an early and fast teether too.

amani - so pleased the current stuff is working hope dd2 is happier too?

right, ds2 snoozing/feeding, dh playing with ds1 outside (the sun has come out ), time for a surf on here before bedtime.

simpson · 18/07/2008 18:02

JKS - cheers for that!! Ds's shoes will last another couple of weeks and then he needs more. That website is closed till 4thAugust so time is just right. Will get his feet measured in clarks and buy on there!!!

Well, DD has gone down for DH for the first time ever. Normally he can get her into her room fine, into sleeping bag ok but she will not feed for him no matter how hungry she is. She has had 4.5 ozs, not great but considering the amount of carrot she has eaten its not too bad.

nicky6 · 18/07/2008 21:36

hi all been really busy spent too much time catching up so no time to post big smiles to all

betterhalf · 18/07/2008 22:20

We have a tooth!
At last a reason for the constant dribbling!

betterhalf · 18/07/2008 22:25

and i have read your thread Madmouse and I really feel for you.
I felt very traumatised coming up to and immediately after the birth of Toby as my sister's firstborn son died a few hours after birth and we still don't fully know the reasons why. I was so relieved that Toby was fine but also felt so guilty that my child was fine and the euphoria of having him, when I knew what my sister had been through. It brought it all home to me sharpish and I spent a number of days weeks after having Toby, getting upset. My sister went on to have 2 very healthy sons who are now 17 and 19 years old. Yikes, that makes me feel very old!

I suppose what I'm trying clumsily to say is I sort of have a clue how you're feeling.

simpson · 19/07/2008 12:14

Hi

I hope everyone is having a good weekend so far. The weather is brightening up here. DH has left for work and not back till 11pm tonight. He took Dcs to the park and gave me a lie in this morning which was nice.

Going to try DD on some pureed apple on her next feed at around 1.30 ish. Will see how she gets on.

DS is playing/making mess in the garden.

Best go and do houseworky things...

susiemj · 19/07/2008 13:04

Hi Guys,

Just stopping in. We're away at the moment and things are a bit difficult. I'm just stopping in for a name change to cheer me up.

From now on I will be LaTrucha. It's from the Spanish expression 'Te quiero mucho, como trucha y trucho' It means I live you a lot, like Mrs Trout for Mr Trout. It's what DH calls me. DH is away ATM and I miss him.

Sorry I haven't caught up, but I did post for you Madmouse on your other thread and I hope you are feeling better Barristermum. I caught those in passing. Hope the days are sunny and funny for all today.

off to name change...

LaTrucha · 19/07/2008 13:06

Here I am, gloriously glossy, scales shining in the sunlight.

justkeepswimming · 19/07/2008 14:57

simpson - did dd sleep well?
i long for the day when i've given up feeding and dh can put both boys to bed on his own think i will go for a leisurely stroll round the block with my ipod on or something!! sad when that's a fantasy....
hope you are having an ok time with dh away. mine has gone out for a few hours but bizarrely ds1 decided he would nap after all today, fell asleep at 2...will have to go and wake him soon tho

hi nicky

betterhalf - hooray for tooth! we have 2! hoping for more soon. ds2 actually woke up and cried a couple of times last night, we were both set for calpol and a bad night but he fell back asleep before we could get to him!
i think i got 6 hours + 2 hours + 1 hour last night, hooray!!!
sorry to hear about your sister, that must have really played on your mind at the time, did you talk to her about it?

latrucha - poor you not having a good time. like the new name, tho unsure about calling you a trout ?

right, last few mins before waking what will be a grumpy child, then having to wake ds2 if we want to get out of the house at all today. planned to go to the fire station open day, it's the turn of the biggest station today and thought ds1 would love it, but finishes at 4, we'll be lucky!

happy weekends to all

betterhalf · 19/07/2008 15:17

I didn't speak about it to my sister while I was pregnant, but in the years since its happened we've talked about it.When it happened I suppose I was at a quite impressionable age (18) and I think it totally influenced my decision not to have children and I fostered instead. It was a bit of a worry while I was pregnant as the reason why her LO died was never clear cut, so for all I knew it could have been something hereditary. Anyway, at the grand old age of 38 I got pregnant, completely by accident. Were using contraceptives religiously, but obviously little Toby wanted to be here and we're so glad about that. I absolutely wouldn't be without him. He's a total darling.
Going back to my sister, it messed her life up really. Alhough she went on to have 2 more boys her marriage broke down, and she's gone on to make major mistakes with men since. Whether that has anything to do with what happened or she just has lousy choice in men I don't know! She refused any counselling and still refuses it now, and I thnk she should have had it. But that's her choice.
Wow, mammouth post. Sorry about that.

simpson · 19/07/2008 19:04

Hi

LaTrucha - grat name change. Hope the rest of your trip is ok.

JKS - DD woke up at 5.30am. Only took 4ozs though and then slept till 8. I wish she would cut that feed out but tbh I would feel mean not feeding her then (or at least seeing if she wants any) as she will have gone 11 or 12 hrs. Guess I have to wait till she can hang on till bedtime at 7 instead of 6.

Betterhalf - so sorry to hear about your sister. Pity she won't have counciling if she needs it. As she got anyone else she can talk to about it?

Am knackered today. Ds played outside in front garden with 5 yr old boy from next door. They play really well together but is always receipe for disaster as he always has melt down when its time to come in. He refused his tea, milk, story etc. Screamed through bath. Was in bed by 6.30.

Phew now to sort out dinner for myself

betterhalf · 19/07/2008 20:00

No she hasn't Simpson, but it was a long time ago now.(20 years). To be honest I think she would have made the mistakes with men anyway. She's that way inclined

Her first husband was a complete idiot and she never learnt her lessons from him. If they look like they have money and are a bit stylish, she's hooked. Other qualities about them don't enter her head until it's too late.

Changing the subject completely... are any of you using a toothbrush on your LO's gums/ teeth yet?

simpson · 19/07/2008 20:17

betterhalf - my DD doesn't have any teeth yet. My DS didn't get his first tooth till he was 14 mths old (then he fell over and knocked it out, so back to zero again !)SIL in Ireland has sent over a cloth to clean tooth/teeth with. Like a flannel but a bit rougher. Will probably use that when she eventually gets any.

madmouse · 19/07/2008 22:40

Poor Nathan
He has a sticky eye which according to the doctor on the phone sounds like a blocked duct. I think he is right, there is no redness but the lid seems a bit swollen, we will see tomorrow he also has a snotty nose.

Also for the second night in a row he has a major screaming fit a while after going to bed, really wailing and wailing, part of which seems pain, part of which seems his desperate desire to be asleep. Gave him calpol again. It may be teething, or his solids not agreeing with him. i have a vague hunch of heartburn, although he does not spit up at al. I put a tiny bit of fresh lime and cumin on the butternut squash before roasting, could that be it?. I think I will give him something bland from a jar tomorrow, and at lunchtime instead of teatime. But he also has to learn that after filling your tummy with squash you cannot chuck in a full milk feed as well, no space.

It makes me . I do not flinch at tantrums or overtiredness but pain...

Night all

Hope it will be agood one.

fillybuster · 19/07/2008 23:29

Hi all,

No time for a catch up as been packing like a mad/possessed thing all afternoon (I hate packing!)...off to devon in the morning for a week

We'll have the laptop and wireless access so I imagine I'll be on MN more rather than less than normal ...but it might be a few days...!

All good here, sending love to all

xxx

madmouse · 20/07/2008 10:57

Oh hurrah, nathan has his first snotty miserable cold with a slight temperature. Although he cried lots at night, but is now chirpy. And keen keen enough to feed, but oh that blocked nose gets in the way.

dh slept from 2 til 7, I did too with an interruption for a small feed at 4am.

bluerrr

hello

simpson · 20/07/2008 11:13

Going to kew Gardens today and will pack a picnic. Lets hope it is a more successful trip than last time in which both Dcs had meltdowns. DD especially bad, she must have been sick then.

Off to pack food and bottles...

AngeChica · 20/07/2008 11:47

We are also invited to a picnic and then a barbecue today.... busy busy.

madmouse I think my DS had a touch of tummyache here and there when adapting to solids. I broke out the gripe water and it seemed to help.

Tu nuevo nombre es divertido laTrucha - but it puts me in mind of trucha con almendras . Food on the brain!

AngeChica · 20/07/2008 11:48

Oh and also what the Spanish call their other half ... "Media naranja" (my half orange!)

rockdoctor · 20/07/2008 16:20

All good things come to an end but instead of packing ready for our roadtrip back to the UK, via a few nights in Spain and the ferry from Santander, I'm here on mumsnet.

Have had an interesting month with DH and his mum in Portugal. Was always going to be a challenge given their difficult relationship and true to form, despite the presence of DD, they rowed for the first week, entered into an uneasy truce during the second, and have managed to get on since then. Still, it's been a lot of fun and DD seems to have put on heaps of weight. She's also developed a habit of smiling/giggling every time someone talks to her in Portuguese (I swear she can tell the difference between English and Portuguese). Unfortunately, we've also discovered she's allergic to tomatoes. I feel pretty bad about that as I've now read somewhere that tomatoes (as raw finger food), are like kiwi fruit and shouldn't be given before 9 months - anyone else come across that? I'm hoping that if we keep her away from them for a few months she'll grow out of it.

Sorry the weather hasn't been too good over there but tbh it's been 38 over here the past few days and with no air conditioning where we are, I'm looking forward to a bit of English summer.

Anyway, hello to everyone, I'm looking forward to reading your weaning stories in detail once I get back as I suspect we've a bit of catching up to do.

simpson · 20/07/2008 18:11

Had a great day at kew gardens. Took picnic and both Dcs had a ball.

However it has gone totally tits up since coming home. As we were getting buggies, bags, coats etc out of the car boot my mum goes to close boot and slams it on my head. Ouch!!!

Get in house DS has total meltdown and refuses to do anything and I lose my temper and shout so hard both Dcs sob. So not like me. DD now in bed however she has only had 2 ozs so God knows when she will squark (sp) again although she ate quite a lot of baby rice for tea. DS still refusing to do as he is told but has calmed down some what. Is jumping on my bed before bath.I rang DH at work and had a moan and he has suggested I order a takeaway for my self.

This parenting lark can be hard work sometimes and of course I now feel v guilty for shouting

lilyloo · 20/07/2008 19:48

Evening all
Simpson don't beat yourself up they will have forgot all about it would take a saint never to lose it enjoy takeaway!

Rockdoctor you really don't want to be back here it's rained almost non stop since you have been away! I have given dd tomato didn't know about the 9 mth thing either!

Ange hope you had nice day

Madm hope Nathan feeling better soon you don't think it could be teeth do you ?

Filly have lovely time in Devon

Betterhalf no never used one of them gum things to rub any of dc's gums pre teeth didn't see point tbh and we have no teeth yet but will try to brush when she get's some. about your sister.

JKS glad you got to use bouncy castle after the struggle you had getting it home hope ds had nice day even though the weather let you down. Thanks for link too will def get dc's shoes from there esp the school shoes

Nicky

Susie loving the new name

Well not done much here this weekend it just seems to go with swimming/dancing/football etc. DS has started two extra training sessions now so that's 4 a week but his coach says he is one of the best 6 year old players he has ever seen (proud mummy emocion) and he loves playing but it's hard supporting him with still trying to do other activities for dd1 can't imagine what it's going to be like when dd2 joins in.
I went to see mamamia though and it's fab there were people up singing and dancing in the pics def go to see it if you can.
I also watched the devil wears prada on Sat night which i have had since last year on dvd but was quite dissapointed with it !
I also braved church today with both dd's on my own and they were really good but it's hard work entertaining them for the hour!
Well start of school hols next week so can imagine i am going to be feeling pretty worn out soon so off for relaxing bath and early night in preperation
