thanks gossifer! The day has been ok, funeral was really nice (well, apart from being a funeral iyswim!)... Linus behaved nearly all the way through, but got a bit grumbly towards the end... was going to take him out but then realised that the service had virtually finished anyway.
Had a really good turn-out... well over 100 people!!! so it was really nice.

hope the jabs went ok! we're waiting for our next appointment to come through.

Claireyfairycake · 26/05/2005 10:44

hello everyone.. sorry im new to this, hope im not intruding!!
I am 21 and My little girl ellie will be 4 months on 15th june, (ive lost count of the weeks!!!) I live in maidstone and dont know anyone with children and theres not much in the way of mother baby clubs so im feeling a bit lonely!! My sister in law has one but she lives in Canada!!
I put ellie on solids about 2 weeks ago because milk was no longer satisfying her and she loves it!! she has digested it fine and satisfies her, but im not brave enough to tell my hv.. she is pretty scary at the best of times!! ellie has done pretty much everything early, even teething and i know she was ready for it but if u dont follow the text books they tend to mke u feel like a lousy parent!!!
hope everyones ok. clairey xx

gossifer · 26/05/2005 12:59

hello clairey & welcome - i'm sorry you're lonely, have you tried finding out if there's any local health centres that do baby massage? or a local pool that does baby swim? or even the play area in a local park? or NCT? i'll try and think of some other ideas for you
leon has just started rolling from his tummy to his back the last few days, he also trys the other way but he's got a while to go before that!!!! he had his 2nd lot of jabs yesterday and seems absolutely fine
that's amazing that ellie is teething already!! i wouldn't worryt too much about the HVs you know your child and your gut instinct - the same with books - every little one is so different
good luck

gossifer · 26/05/2005 13:14

ps i'm sure you're not a lousy parent!!!!!

starlover · 26/05/2005 18:06

that is awfully early to start weaning. advice has always been no solids before 4 months (although currently they suggest 6)... the gut isn't mature enough to cope with it, and it can cause long-term problems.
don't want to worry you, but it can be quite serious.

there have been a few threads on this. If your baby is hungry then she probably just needs more milk.

starlover · 26/05/2005 19:08

it has also been linked to childhood obesity and allergy problems.

tbh a baby shouldn't need anything before 6 months except milk.

futurity · 26/05/2005 21:32

my first son was weaned at 4 months as that was the recommendation then (3 years ago). He also stopped gaining weight so I was advised to wean him. I spoke to h/v recently and commented about the advice given now to wait until 6 months and she said that it is clearly an unrealistic for some babies and that I should use my judgement this time round as I have weaned a baby before. She said if I did need to start before 6 or even 4 months then to keep the food very bland..ie just baby rice. But then again if I spoke to a different H/V she would probably say something different again!

Hazellnut · 27/05/2005 08:24

Sorry to hear about your sad times Starlover/Gossifer...

Welcome Clairey - hope you've managed to find some things to do with your lo. There's a great website called netmums which is localised and list things to do in different areas. I shouldn't worry about the weaning thing if it made a difference to satisfying your dd. 35 years ago, my brother was apparently weaned at 1 month () on HV advice cos he was so hungry. It doesn't seem to have caused any long term effects other than the fact he still eats all the time !! I don't think you can say once the calendar flicks over to a certain date that they are ready - each are different. I am waiting till dd gives out some signs of needing it. She is just over 4 months and I don't intend to wait till 6 months unless she just isn't interested. The HVs in my area are supportive of this (and in fact, a friend was given the all clear to start at 15 weeks as her ds was so hungry). Its a tricky one though and it seems there's always something to make you feel guilty/ wonder if you've made the right decision !!

thank you gossifer, maybe u can email me? how old is your little one? my email is [email protected]

i think ive done the right thing, my younger sister was weaned at 5 weeks!!! ellie was sleeping right through from about 6 weeks, but then she started waking up and guzzling so much milk i didnt know wot to do with her!!! since putting her on solids though she has been much happier!! she is only on the very bland stuff, dont think its wise to give her any sweet stuff just yet... apparently my mum did that with me and then i would only eat sweet stuff!!
i will have a look on net mums, i asked at our CAB and keep looking out for notices but there just does not seem to be anything about. i dont know about any baby massage, but i thought ellie was alittle young (shes nearly 4 months)for swimming? But maybe i will look into it, it would be good if i can do something like that, i'd like ellie to see other babies too. x ;)

gossifer · 28/05/2005 13:45

gosh, how did everyone get on with their little ones and the heat? was in the park and a pub garden yesterday but then so hot when we got home last night, had a right quandry with what to put leon in to sleep, what did you all do? i ended up with leon in a vest and the window open and he was fine but i worried!
he's just in his nappy today and have invested in sun lotion, maybe will have ot invest in a baby tent for the park, anyone bought one?
have a lovely weekend by the way

gossifer · 28/05/2005 13:46

ps thankyou hazelnut, xxxxxxx
emailing you now clairey, xxx

starlover · 28/05/2005 16:14

Linus was ok actually. He slept in a babygro, but no vest, and just a sheet on him. I did check him in the night, as it was due to cool down... but he was ok.

Bear in mind that for the most part babies are just lying down and not really doing much, so they don't tend to get as hot as us!

whereabouts are you gossifer? I am in South-East... so hottest part of the country yesterday unfortunately!!!

starlover · 28/05/2005 16:15

Roosmum... i won some PUL on ebay the other day, just waiting for it to arrive! Now want some microfleece to line with. Am stupidly excited about it all.

I took my nana's sewing machine when she passed away so I'm all set!

Hazellnut · 28/05/2005 19:53

I posted on a 'sleep' thread as I was so worried what to put dd in to sleep as her room was registering 30 degrees. I settled on just a vest and she woke up at 3 crying (which is extremely unusual) so I put her in her sleeping bag (1 tog) as it had cooled down a little.... I was sooo worried about her all night and once she woke at 3 I think she thought this was her usual getting up time as she then didn't really settle all night. Have now ordered a 0.5 tog sleeping bag so it will probably cool down !! Its cooler in her room tonight luckily....... It wasn't so long ago I was worried she was getting too cold at night !

gossifer · 28/05/2005 21:20

it's amazing isn't it, that how we view the sunny days is so different from this time last year?

starlover, were in london and i really felt like we were in greece last night!! really cooled down today though, but thanks for you comments

hazelnut - i wish i'd seen your thread yesterday, seen it now, thanks

starlover · 28/05/2005 21:39

ooh gossifer, you're not too far from me then! i'm in sussex

gossifer · 28/05/2005 22:00

whereabouts in sussex? my best friend is from steyning in west sussex, lovely place - i need to move out of london.........

starlover · 28/05/2005 22:10

we're in crawley, more's the pity!

gossifer · 28/05/2005 22:16

a really good friend of my mums used to live there and we were packed off there as kids to give my mum & dad some time out, can't remember anything about it though! (is that good or bad?) youo're near to the seaside though aren't you? i sometimes feel like anywhere's nearer than london, it takes so long to get out of!

starlover · 28/05/2005 22:21

it's about midway between london and brighton. bit closer to brighton maybe...
closer to the sea than you though!

gossifer · 28/05/2005 22:26

how is linus? leon has just started to want to be sitting(propped) up and being totally involved in whats going on, wants to be played with more & more, getting less & less done each day!!!!

starlover · 28/05/2005 22:57

yeah exactly the same here! if you try and lie him in the crook of your arm he is straining to sit up! he gets very cross if you don't let him.
I have to confess I sit him in front og the tv so I can get things done (something I always said i would never do!)... but otherwise he jsut wants entertaining allllllll the time!
daytime sleeps getting shorter too!

Hazellnut · 29/05/2005 11:08

Thought I'd join in the sussex thread - I am orginally from Brighton so a sussex girl at heart.. living in London trying to persuade dh to move to Brighton !!

I know what you mean about the tv - I do this too and at the moment I think that as they can't do a great deal to play on their own the tv must stimulate them as its all sound and movement.... at least that's what I tell myself !! DD particularly loves the simpsons - which will have to stop unless I want her first words to be 'eat my shorts'......

OP posts:
gossifer · 29/05/2005 12:38

ooooh, lets all go to live by the sea near brighton!!!!! where are you in london hazelnut? i'm stoke newington
haven't tried the tv yet, although leon does sit propped up against me as i tap away on the laptop and gaze at the screen sometimes...

gossifer · 29/05/2005 12:39

ps yes starlover, those daytime sleeps getting shorter here too, leon used to have a big sleep after his morning feed, alas no more!
