roosmum · 12/05/2005 17:43

& 12lb odd at 17 wks ....roo is a fatboy!
(he's not really tho, big & long too - & growing out of 3-6 mth clothes already. think he's in proportion & at least being BF i have nothing to worry abt with his weight, HV says he's doing fab & just told him 'don't hold back'!!!)

starlover · 12/05/2005 17:43

yeah sore nipples and thrush all sorted, but unfortunately I am having to express because I started mixed feeding him and my supply still hasn't gone back up!

roosmum · 12/05/2005 17:54

you'll get there i'm sure SL
expressing's not much fun really huh...

aloha · 12/05/2005 18:12

Starlover, why do you think you don't have enough milk?

starlover · 12/05/2005 18:32

because each time I express I only get around 40ml, except in the morning,
and DS will latch on and suck for about 2 minutes and then screams because there isn't any.

aloha · 12/05/2005 18:35

I think you mentioned on another thread about your ds refusing to latch on, didn't you? I wouldn't be so sure it's because 'there's nothing there' but it is a tricky one. I suppose you persevere with trying to get him to suck? I think the amount you express is not really relevant. How about his first feed in the am? How does that go?

starlover · 12/05/2005 18:37

yeah, most of the time he refuses, but when he does it's literally a couple of m inutes and that's it.

Hazellnut · 12/05/2005 19:36

Well dd is almost 16 weeks and probably only around the 12lb mark...... (weigh in tomorrow !)... but we're quite pleased about that !!

i was at baby massage today and one of the women there has a friend who is a HV, apparently HVs have to say 6 months for weaning because its the WHO philosophy, and the reason for that is the problems of sanitation & clean water in 3rd world countries, so they are trying to encourage women to continue BF until at least 6months when the little ones` immune system is strong; that said obviously each mother & babe is different; just thought you'd all like to know!

gossifer · 12/05/2005 20:20

ps my little one was 13lb 4oz 2 weeks ago at 10 weeks and feeding like crazy, will find out what he weighs next week, but he's not a small un!

dear tipex
you're NOT doing it all wrong and all babes are sooo different, you're a wonderful mother anf i bet things will change again and again! do ignore those centiles - they're so misleading and done on bottlefed babes not BF, as long as your babe is feeding well then do not let the charts make you feel like your babe is not the right weight, my sisters child was always soo light and is 2 now and a skinny little thing but perfectly ok!!!
as for putting him down to sleep, i take him into the bed room where its quiet & cuddle him for 5 mins and then put him into his cradle and stay in the room for another 5 mins, part of the thing is that you shouldn't tak them from one environment to another that is v.different, but do it gradually, does that help? good luck [grin}

gossifer · 12/05/2005 21:31

that grin was meant to be a

aloha · 12/05/2005 22:03

Gossifer, sorry to say this, but that just isn't true. The reason is that babies' guts don't mature until they are around 6months old. It really has nothing to do with clean water and is most definitely for developing countries only. Babies' guts develop at pretty much the same rate the world over. HVs are NOTORIOUSLY ignorant!
However, I certainly agree with you that all babies are different. Tipex, my ds was a terrible, terrible sleeper and I can't tell you how depressed I got about and how convinced I was that I was doing it all wrong. But I wasn't, it was just him. He sleeps wonderfully now he is three (actually slept really well from nine months) and dd, who I think I treat just the same way as I treated ds, sleeps really well. And at 13 weeks she weights 14.5lbs. It's not you, it's him!
Would a dummy help? It helped ds.

Hazellnut · 12/05/2005 22:08

Tipex, dd is on something like the 7th centile and don't think it really matters - some of them have to small and you know what they say - good things come in small packages (I have to say that, I am only 5 foot !!).

Also, I don't think I am doing anything right in order to get dd sleeping so well at night. I just count myself very very lucky.... and am always aware that it might not last !

However! I meant to add that there is no real evidence (that I could find while researching this subject) that weaning at the end of four months does any harm to babies at all. There is some evidence of possible harm in some babies if you wean much before that - esp before 12 weeks.

roosmum · 13/05/2005 09:26

aloha (& others with older children) - i'm a 1st time mum & tho all's well at the mo, i'm wondering whether ds will start waking lots at night in due course...2 friends' babies were waking every 1-2 hrs at 5 & 5 1/2 months ....did yours do this?? not wishing the time away (& roo's sleeping well now) but just wondering if this type of thing will start up...not looking forward to sleeplessness again!! but i do want to get as close tothe 6 mths as poss.

aloha · 13/05/2005 10:23

Some babies wake a lot, some don't. I know people whose children have slept through early and have never had a blip - others have had lifelong rubbish sleepers. I think it's too easy to blame it on their food. What he ate never affected my ds's sleep which went from terrible to great at about nine months!

starlover · 13/05/2005 10:44

Tipex you aren't doing anything wrong!
I (like hazellnut) just consider myself VERY lucky with DS. He has always been a good sleeper, he has always been happy to lie in his cot by himself until he falls asleep... that's just the way he is.
But that doesn't mean it all won't change!

I don't know if this actually makes a difference but I am a VERY laid-back person. I don't tend to get stressed out (except maybe by breastfeeding now and then!) and I think that rubs off on him. I am very calm and I think he picks up on that.

If I put him down and he grumbles then I just go in and pop his dummy back in and snuggle him back up with his blanky and his rabbit and leave the room. Sometimes he will keep wailing on and off because he loses his dummy and i'll go in and just stroke his cheek for a while, or whisper to him and he calms down and drops off.

roosmum · 13/05/2005 10:52

thanks aloha, just have to see how we go i guess (like most things!).
SL - good to know yr laid-back...i am a stresshead! but dh is v. calm, might compensate

aloha · 13/05/2005 11:21

As for being calm, ds didn't sleep well and dd does (well, I think so!) - and people say it's because I'm calm. I'm really not so sure. I may appear less deranged because I get more sleep, and anyway I think it's her that is calm.

starlover · 14/05/2005 16:45

got my next lot of nappies today
Have washed them and they are just drying... going to try out the nature babies one first! Looks a bit wider between the legs than the fuzzi's, but nice and soft!

roosmum · 14/05/2005 19:55

SL - i made a nappy !!!
will go in nappy wash tonight & then be tried out tomorrow. just a plain navy one with cream fleece & popper fastening...can't think where i put my velcro, which wd hv been sooo much quicker to put together. also got my smiley faces PUL from states today - looks v. funky (look out for a seller called alexland..i think...for similar stuff??) & will hopefully be turned into a stuffy before too long.
hope you like the NB nappy, think mine are great. stuffies are putting me off my bambino mios tbh, & if my stuffy is a success i might abandon the wraps & just use the prefolds to stuff.

starlover · 14/05/2005 20:19

I shall await the verdict on your homemade one though!
