Hi - anyone fancy making up a thread for babies born this month? My dd (child no 4 ) was born on 6th Jan - I have had a rough time so far with feeding (cracked nipples etc) but things have started to improve now (I think). if only I could get her to sleep at night....

DS3 was born on 4th. It is utterly hectic here- but in some ways easier than I thought it would be. DS2 adores him and ds1 (severely autistic) isn't bothered by him (went slightly off the rails when ds2 was born).

he's not bad at night- wakes once usually but doesn't like sleeping in the day grrr. Had to mix feed though- which is a pain as bit short of milk and no time to build up (think I'm too stressed a lot of the time as well!) He gets a top up if he's still hungry after a feed. My aim is to bf as long as possible (ds1 13 months, ds2, 2 years) but I don't mind having to mix feed.

Hi, my daughter was born on 5th January, she's quite a good night sleeper too but hates sleeping during the day and gets really ovetired by evening (although I have got her off this afternoon!).
I'm having my first week on my own with her - my Mum stayed until last friday to help out, as I had to have an emergency c-section and have needed a bit of extra help round the house. Feeding is going ok though - and I've suceeded in getting her into cloth nappies which I was keen to do.

ooh, very excited that you've all posted!

Feeding is improving here, but not sleeping! dd3 sleeps most of the day! We have variable nights, the best is when she wakes up twice (4 hours is the longest she has done in one go), but sometimes she wakes up every hour. That's a killer. I think she doesn't quite know the difference between day and night.

Fiona I've just ordered some cloth nappies on trial- what kind are you using? i haven't used cloth nappies before, but thought I ought to give it a go this time.

we went into cloth as well today Fiona I've just ordered some weenies as well- I always like them and they have a new system which looks good. I used cloth a lot with ds1, less so with ds2 (we moved house and lived with my parents inbetween when he was small) but want to use them again. Prefer them really.

I've started driviing again this week- very odd as its been so long. I'm never sure if you're meant to check with the insurance company post section (I didn't- did after my first one and the woman acted like I was mad).

Ds3 has gone very spotty- why do newborns do that?

off to an NCT coffee morning tomorrow whilst ds1 is at school and ds2 is at nursery. because ds1 was going through diagnosis etc when ds2 was smallI didn't really go to groups with him- this time round I'm keen to- it's a bit like having my first again.

Our main problem at the moment is getting ds1 to bed- he's a nightmare.....at the moment

I think I've got an angel ( at the mo)! She sleeps well, usually only wakes once, and happily sits in her bouncy chair watching the world go past for most of the day (when not sleeping some more). Breast feeding is going ok - not too painful after the initial ceiling-hitting moment when she latches on - arghh! She has got a cold though, so sounds terribly bunged up - its like bfing a badger. Good job she's so good though, as dd1(2.3) is an absolute MARE at the moment - off to commiserate on the terrible twos thread...

Jimjams · 02/02/2005 21:33

Good idea socci- we use it to bath ds1 anyway. It's only his face -poor love- the other's had spotty bodies, ds1 has a teenagers face

FionaJT · 02/02/2005 21:52

Sassy - lol at bfeeding a badger! my dd is all bunged up too and makes some shockng noises.
She usually sleeps for 6 hours at night before waking first(alhough has gone a bit longer when tired)and then wakes again after 3 hours - which is usually morning, depending on what time I get her to sleep! Which I think is fairly civilised.
Pollyanna - I've bought a couple each of various nappies secondhand (Motherease, Totsbots and some Sandies and Bimbles that a friend has lent)
and I'm using muslins too, until I make up my mind which works best and can stock up on the next size up.

Jimjams · 02/02/2005 21:54

another bunged up babe here...... I found a revolting nasal snot extractoor for babies in the local chemists. haven't dared use it though.

Pollyanna · 03/02/2005 13:56

Sassy my toddler (2 in a couple of weeks) is being awful too. I have to really watch her as she wants to hurt the baby. At other times she just collapses into uncontrollable sobs - she is obviously really confused. Very envious of your sleeping baby too!

Hello to all

My daughter was born on 9 January so it's nice to see others in similar circumstances.

Sleep has been a bit rough lately (so mum is rather tired too) but breastfeeding is going OK. Glad to see we can support each other!

Not sure re nasal extractor but eh, whatever helps. Any ideas on colics at all? How to soothe? Tricks on winding anyone?

Speak soon...

artyjoe · 04/02/2005 14:37

Faith was born on 19th January and seems an angel! Last night was the first proper nightmare evening where she got up every 3 hours and when she slept had nightmares and snorted or groaned all night!

With regards to winding, I sooo know where you are with that...we've tried Infacol and it has 'slightly' improved, but not much, we are maybe getting a burp every other feed, so any other suggestions would be fab for me too.

When we were in hospital she slept for 7 hours and 10 hours in a row...and of course I just sat there all morning from 2am watching BBCNews 24 and watching my baby rather than sleeping (oh how naieve )...somewhere we've gone wrong since returning home!

Pollyanna · 05/02/2005 13:47

Mosschops - my baby has started staying awake crying or feeding all evening until 1 0r 2am too. Did you manage to change your baby's pattern? (it is far too exhausting staying up until 2 am every day and getting up the next day).

OP posts:
Mu42 · 05/02/2005 18:39

Infacol has actually been good although it helps to give it five minutes before feeds if you can. I think the rest has just been a question of time and patience, I must admit.

Re waking up every two hours, I know how you feel for being in the same situation. They say it only lasts for four weeks or so and that mums have to adapt by napping etc. Not easy though so any other advice welcomed!

Hello can I join - am an interloper from due in Feb as I was but dd came on 24 January (not entirely - or at all - naturally, the sorry birth tale can be read on birth annoucements !).
Due to dd's smallness, breastfeeding just didn't work for us despite the hospital trying to enforce it causing a lot of distress and guilt for Me and dd (distress for dd, not sure she has felt guilt yet !). We are mixed feeding by me expressing as much as poss so she is at least getting some milk from me and in fact it works well for us as dd is putting on weight at a rapid rate !

Sleeping is still to be mastered. We were on a strict 3 hourly feeding programme till Friday to get her weight up but have been told we can relax so we are hoping that feeding on demand will help although at the moment she seems to take this to mean she can demand it more often than 3 hourly !! oh well - can't complain in the circumstances.

Am also really keen to use cloth nappies but dont' think they come small enough (dd has just gone over 5 pounds !). Will wait until she is a bit bigger and then order !

Jimjams · 06/02/2005 15:13

hazellnut- I've just gone onto weenies- sold by lollipop. They're great as you can use them either as a disposable or as a washable. They also do a size that would fit tinies- not cheap though but I think they're fantastic (used cloth on myother 2 as well- and these are great and neat and less bulky).

Mixed feeding is working well for us as well btw.

Hazellnut · 10/02/2005 19:23

Thanks Jimjams - is this sort buyable online anywhere - I did a search but couldn't find them but may be operator error !

Here's the link Hazellnut - pouch pants.

Thanks - will have a look.

Hello all, joining you from Jan antenatal club. DS born 31 January. Well done for using cloth nappies - I don't think we could cope with that as well. I'm very lucky in that DH does most of the nappies - seems fair as he's not lactating!

BF is going OK - sometimes it's wonderful and other times I let out a great yell at latch on. DS does seem to forget how to do it and won't open his mouth wide enough and then gets fed up and flails around or buries his mouth in the cushion. At this point DH usually comes over and shoves his head on (DS's head obviously). This does get the milk in, but I'm sure is not NCT approved technique. Ah well...! He also gets hiccups (and did in the womb) but they don't seem to bother him.

His sleep is good - DS has gone 6 hours a couple of times and over 8 once. We are very lucky in this respect as I am hopeless without sleep and tend to sit and cry (perhaps I need a dummy as well - it's certainly the best couple of quid we've spent on DS so far). DS also sleeps quite well during the day and is beginning to like his bouncy chair. Less sleep daytime (and feeding more frequently) seems to give us better nights, but it's all down to DS really at the moment.

Dophus · 14/02/2005 13:47

My gorgeous little boy is three weeks old today.

MY nipples are killing me and I'm still hitting the roof when he latches on. The left isn't so bad but I only seem to be able to feed him from the right nip whilst lying down in which case the milk seems to dribble up his nose! Please tell me the pain will pass soon...

He also seem to snack and rarely stays on for more than 5-10 mins. As he feeds every 3-4 hours (more frequently in the day) I can't believe he is getting enough. However as he's growing well I guess he must be!

He started out as a little angel and was a contented baby for the first couple of weeks but has recently started to be very grisly in the evenings and difficult to settle. any suggestions?
