How about this?

loucee · 16/06/2008 16:03

thanks Skid and Clairey, so do you reckon ditch the babyrice and go for packet porridge? I also tried some pureed carrot at the weekend but again just gagged and spat it out. He enjoyed a rice cake but gagged whenever a bit broke off and I panicked and took it off him! he enjoyes sucking on an apple or banana.
I flapped with DD and I think I'm doing it again. I thought I would stick at babyrice until he got used to eating off a spoon but seems like he might never do it unless I try some more interesting stuff?

claireybee · 16/06/2008 16:07

Put it this way-I wouldn't eat babyrice but the porridge is quite tasty!

skidaddle · 16/06/2008 16:19

that's how I'm thinking as well clairey - what actually tastes nice? For example I would not entertain the idea of eating mushed up broccoli or baby rice but bananas, porridge and bits of roast butternut squash are quite yummy. If he likes sucking on apples/bananas maybe just stick with that for now - and try some other fruit/veg as well?

BouncingTurtle · 16/06/2008 17:38

Ds has just had his tea, he had some broccoli & cauliflower mashed up together, he had some of it but then didn't want any more so gave him some baby rice (had some EBM that needed using up) and he gobbled that up.
DS has Cow & Gate Fruity porridge and loves it! But I'd like to try him on shredded wheat & weetabix once he gets to 6 months since we usually have that in.
Think I might try carrot tomorrow.

loucee · 16/06/2008 19:19

yeah I agree Clairey and Skid, I had concerns that using the packet stuff would lead DS to be fussy or always need sweeter foods but I'm going to give them a go... well I will after the weekend because we're moving around so much in the next week I want to be consistent.

Sounds like everyone is doing really well, how are you guys doing with weight loss? I think I've lost about 6lbs from going jogging but I still have another 1.5stone to lose and a hell of a lot of toning to do!

cazzybabs · 16/06/2008 19:30

Evie has a another cold (how it is summer???) and is refusing to eat - I am sure my other 2 weren't this bad. And she has been even more sick than usual - ggrrrrrr.

claraquitetirednow · 16/06/2008 20:19

Evening all. I will NEVER say that I am not worried about looking after two on my own again. It's been a nightmare so far. DD1 who NEVER wakes in the night obviously had a nightmare last night, woke in tears and came in to sleep in my room. I had to lie there sweating that dd2 was going to wake so many times that the only way to get her back to sleep would be to bring her in with me, but luckily she didn't as there wouldn't have been room!! Anyway dd2's been hard hard work all day - refusing her milk, continually getting into the crawling position and then getting frustrated and crying, refusing to nap for any length of time. I only got her to sleep tonight with the help of Medised.... I'm going to finish on here, do her bottles and go to bed in preparation for another bad night...

cazzy my dd2 seems to have had a cold on and off since birth. It feels like one long one. Others with similar aged babies say the same. Wierd.

loucee got back to pre-preg weight a few weeks ago but have stopped losing now and in fact am worried I will put it back on as I seem to be addicted to chocolate at the moment.

skid your ds is doing very well! After reading your and claireybee's messages earlier about giving them whatever food was in the fridge I decided to give it a go. So gave her a bit of yellow pepper and some strawberries. She sucked on the pepper a bit before getting bored, then ate some of the strawberries, gagged, and threw them up. Now her bib is stained red. Think I'll stick to purees and mush for now!

BT - I am confused by "heating up milk to kill bugs" Now I'm no expert but what bugs are there in milk and how would heating it up kill them? With dodgy water you really have to boil it for a certain amount of time to make it drinkable (and if it's really bad use Milton as well). I wouldn't have thought heating milk would make any difference. However I am not a health visitor so will bow to her greater experience....Btw glad your ds is ok.

beckle sorry you're not feeling so great. It's funny, I was thinking today when I was having a bit of a wobbly moment can I really still be this hormonal six months on? But of course a lot of PND isn't diagnosed until a long time after the birth. Hope you get the support you need and feel better soon.

lizzer I love the highchair!

Claraq - am trying to be healthy, but haave to admit when my girls are asleep for their afternoon nap, I ALWAYS unwind with a bag of malteseaers and a cuppu...can't be that bad can it...??

RE: Veg pizza with chicken on it - we got the price of the pizza knocked off our bill. The mananger did offer another pizza on the house, but I was feeling a bit off by the whole thing that I refused it.

Went Drayton Monor Theme Park, had a fab time even though most of it was spent in 'Thomas Land'. DD1 was so amazed she actually thought she was on the Island of Sodar. Was persaued to go on the Shockwaves rollercoaster, verticle drop and Pirate Ship, bought the big kid out of me, been years since i last done that...

Skid - I gave DD2 some pureed courgettes today for the first time and even though it tasted vile to me, she ate a whole bowl of it up.

claraquitetirednow · 17/06/2008 09:09

Amani - no it has been medically proven that Maltesers are the best thing for new mothers. Apparently it helps you lose weight, lowers your blood pressure, can help prevent some forms of cancer and will generally make you feel a whole lot better !

Ha ha to Thomas land - I took dd1 to Postman Pat's village in Longleat when I was pregnant and literally could not drag her away! She absolutely loved it.

morning all!

it's so nice to read all your news and also to hear that we are not the only ones floundering with food!

lizzer lol as soon as you said egg on a stick i knew what highchair you meant! i actually like it, but it would have been too big for our weensy room. i know what your dh means re the tripp trapp wood, it's not as "real" as I expected, but then again i think it's totally coated in stuff so it can wipe clean (and good thing too!)

Oh - nappy - garrr - back later

Lizzer · 17/06/2008 10:43

Lol at everyone's thoughts on the egg..I'm sure i'll like it more when it arrives and thanks for reassuring me dp had a point with the TT and not just pissing away spending money unecessarily

Amani, i am going embrace the afternoon malteser idea, sounds great

Cazzybabs, sorry E isn't so good, hopefully she'll have a super strong immune system soon after all these viruses

wow Loucee you've got a long journey ahead, i wish you luck! Sorry you're struggling with food, i do find plum baby purees are really 'thin' might be worth just trying them to see if he enjoys the different tastes without gagging? (before moving on to lumpier stuff)

Well I tried brocolli florettes for ds's tea last night and he LOVED them and managed to eat them really well, going to get some mini (chantenay?) carrots and boil them whole for tonight...

How's everyone going with water? Ds will sip a bit from his spouted beaker but will drink an inch in a doidy cup-although he then wants to hold it/throw it (cue tears etc..) Not worried yet as he bf's so much but want to him usedto it.

claireybee · 17/06/2008 10:44

your thoughts here please girls

Skid I was talking to my sister about you (she is a phd type person!)and she said one of her colleagues was in your situation and she'd ask her how she managed it, anyway her friend has emailed me and this is what she says:

Hi Claire,
S tells me that one of your friends is trying to get a phd done while still breastfeeding. It's not the easiest thing to continue breastfeeding but it can be done. E was in nursery 3 full and 2 half days a week, I was lucky, firstly because they were very accomodating and secondly because it was right next to the office. I could never express much so was very worried. In the morning I'd take the children to nursery and feed E before leaving. I'd then return at lunchtime and this is where the nursery really shone cause they would distract D so I could get in without him seeing me and let me take E into the baby room (which was always dark and quiet)and sit with her and eat my lunch and feed. Without sounding too much of a hippy this time really helped us reconnect with each other. In the afternoon I would feed her as soon as I arrived at nursery then we'd all go home. This system did mean that she had to go 3 hours between feeds when we were used to feeding on demand but she soon adjusted. Nursery gave her lunch before I arrived and a snack in the afternoon so she was never starving. She would feed more at night during those first 6-8 weeks though.
Wish your friend good luck from me!

There you are-you are now officially my friend . Hope some of it is of use

claireybee · 17/06/2008 11:01

Aw the DC are playing together and both are laughing-so cute!

BouncingTurtle · 17/06/2008 12:58

Have replied!
Milk - reason for heating is that it isn't sterile - there will be bacteria in it that cause it to decompose.

claraquitetirednow · 17/06/2008 13:06

But BT none of the stuff that dd puts in her mouth is sterile? Oh I don't know! Call me stupid, perhaps I should go and do some research before questioning these things. I don't ever recall heating milk for dd1 but I think I usually just used up the rest of the formula on her cereal as I do with dd2. Perhaps that's why it was never an issue. There again I don't think I am a very cautious mum, sometimes I can't believe my two dd's have survived this far. (wanders off to extract small object from choking baby etc)....

Lizzer - Love that high chair, we need a new one as the dog chewed the fastener bits off ours

Ds1 is going through a terrible 2 stage atm..been a nightmare the last few days...and sometimes i wonder why i want another one

BouncingTurtle · 17/06/2008 13:17

Claraq- very true... Better to be safe than sorry though I guess!
Ds has been trying to eat his baby gym.. the frame that its

Amani · 17/06/2008 13:59

losing the will to live today... both dd's driving me up the wall...

skidaddle · 17/06/2008 14:07

Hi all,

clairey - thank you very much for asking your sister's friend for advice. And thank you to her friend too. I have thought of asking if I can feed him at the nursery but now he is on solids hopefully that won't be necessary. Good to know it can be done though, and that I am now officially your friend!!

clara - oh poor you - I knew I was jinxing it by saying having two is a doddle now - I didn't think i would jinx it for you though - sorry! Hope today has been better.
Totally agree about the heating milk thing - assuming it is pasteurised I cannot imagine why on earth it would need heating. But as we know HVs have been known to talk complete cr@p (just ask clairey!)

amani - well there goes my theory then - pureed courgettes does not sound appealing at all!

Lizzer - we have started DS on a little sippy cup with water in, he wants to play with it rather than drink it but I don;t think that really matters if he's still BF, does it?

loucee - think I might be losing a tiny bit of weight as well, at long bl**dy last! Don't think my tummy will ever recover though... why didn't I appreciate it when it was lovely and taut
Hope the christening goes well this w/e

suey2 · 17/06/2008 15:01

ha, yes- i had lots of ideas on BLW, but millie loves being spoonfed and barely makes any mess at all! Proper poos were a bit of a shock, though

suey2 · 17/06/2008 15:58

sorry, bit of a random post!

Lizzer · 17/06/2008 15:59

I'd argue with your hv there BT, the pasteurization of cow's milk kills the bacteria so all boiling will do is make it hot, definitely no need to do this, I'd get a proffessional second opinion and save yourself a lot of hassle

Sorry things are so tough Clairey, I don't think a ff would help though tbh, I hope you get it sorted soon, it must be so wearing...

Caz10 · 17/06/2008 16:10

aaargh how many times have i started to post and not got anywhere?!

beckle hope you are doing ok. I used to suffer from panic attacks, so totally understand the anxiety thing it is horrible, hope things improve.

clara we are doing a bit of a mix here too, of BLW and mush that is, it's very VERY random though, I'm getting in a bit of a muddle tbh as I have no schedule/routine whatsoever and starting to think I should.

I've been trying everything both ways, so for example I've tried dd with both carrot sticks and mashed carrots. I don't puree anything as don't have a blender but just mash it with olive oil or unsalted butter. She is NOT a veg fan!! whizzska i think it was you that was asking re savoury foods? Well dd just refuses any veg, in any shape or form, she won't eat carrot/sweet potato etc in sticks or in mush. She puts the sticks to her mouth though and then chucks it away so I do think it is the taste.

fifi - finger foods - dd has eaten breadsticks, rice cakes, and organix rusks and carrot puffs on her own - she won't hold banana but will eat it whole if I hold it. In fact she will put away a scary amount that way - that was a scary nappy day!!

I'm just not sure where to go next - she can't just munch on dry carbs all the time, but she was getting upset when I offered carrots for like the 14th time yesterday...

Oh she is def a stander/bouncer too - v strong legs, but no interest whatsoever in being on her tum or crawling...sore on the arms isn't it?!

loucee hi and how is the food going today? You were right about dd she flips herself right up onto her side now and sleeps much better that way!!

Speaking of sleep, no-one has really mentioned it for a while, please tell me you're not all getting 12hr nights or something?!! We are in a pattern more or less of down at 7, wakes for feeds at 11, then then 2/3ish, then (and this is the bit that kills me) - half awake and crying at 5am at which point I have to shush her back to sleep or bring her into bed, if I get her back to sleep she is then up for the day at 6.15/6.30ish.

OH - clairey - sorry have just read your linked post re sleep - nightmare!
