what do you guys think about waking a sleeping baby? i know some people say that if they sleep too much in the day, they wont sleep at night, but the one book i've read that i really useful says not to wake a sleeping baby unless its part of planned sleep-training. same book also says that planned sleep training not always needed and not to do it too young if you do do it. also i can hear my mum's voice in my ears telling me never to wake a sleeping baby ! dd really good with sleeping and i've just left her for as long as she needs (usually 4-ish hours a day in daytime at the moment) but she's sound asleep now and i cant help thinking that maybe i should unswaddle her at a certain point so we dont end up repeat of this morning when she was so tired and upset. hmmmmm.....

leesmum · 22/05/2008 10:42

Just nipping on to say that i hope all goes ok at the hospital today Beany. Im sure everything will be fine with your Ds1. Let us know how you get on xxxBIG HUGSxxx

leesmum · 22/05/2008 10:52

And can i just say how very happy i am today because......my team won the CHAMPIONS LEAGUE!!!!!!! i'm sorry if any of you ladies are chelsea fans, but what a bunch of whingeing dirty BA%*#RDS they were

And John Terry got on my nerves at the end, "get a grip man!"

LOL LOL LOL i don't want to cause any trouble i'm just milking it while i can

beansprout · 22/05/2008 11:14

That's another thing we have in common leesmum!! Come on you reds!!! I did actually think about waking up ds1 to tell him but then thought better of it...

So, in answer to tyca's question - only wake them to tell them football results!! Um, no, maybe not.
I think it is actually quite hard to wake a sleeping baby. I don't wake up ds2 but I do try and make sure he doesn't kip for too long, too close to bedtime. Four hours in the day sounds great for this stage of things (I wish ds2 could sleep for that long, it's usually a sum total of about 2 hours ).

rozzyraspberry · 22/05/2008 11:16

Good luck today beany.

Hope you're ok egg.

Hi jay

Haylstones · 22/05/2008 11:23

Hi all. Our home motto is never wake a sleeping baby. Sometimes we might make a bit more noise than usual if ds has been sleeping for ages but unless it's very close to bedtime we don't bother him. I reckon if he's sleeping he must need it.
What are all your babies doing routine wise?
I was taking ds to bed with me at 9.30ish but for the past couple of weeks I've been putting him down at 7pm, giving a dream feed at 9.30/10pm then he's waking around 2 and 5 for a feed before getting upa t 7.30. Is this about the 'norm' for this age? He has slept until 4am a few times but not regularly (yet- I hope!). He then naps about 9.30 for anything from 45 mins to 2 hours, naps after lunch then the last nap about 4ish. I normally bath him every couple of days, either morning or evening depending on how much dd has on (we're late back a few nights and she normally has a bath or shower in he morning.

tyaca · 22/05/2008 11:55

oh god, the football. i spend my life avoiding it and then when there's a really big match and i decide to committ and care, be it chelsea or england we (we???) always lose and it always feels AWFUL. why do people do it?? why are my shackles rising at anti-terry sentiments (yes you leesmum )... grrrrrr. thank god no more foortball til june or whenever it is the season re-starts. and oh the bliss that we're not in euro thingy.

Egg · 22/05/2008 15:57

I try not to wake a sleeping baby (sleep routine went out of the window), but sometimes do wake if it is a feed time.

Got doc appt for DD tomorrow as she is eating less and less each day and crying more and more. She has even thrown up twice today, which is unlike her. Strangely she seems quite happy now, despite refusing point blank to drink her milk. Spoke to HV again today (different one as mine is not in today) and she suggested silent reflux, so have put some infant gaviscon in this milk to see if it makes a difference but she wont bloody try it .

Football. I went to bed.

sarahmikeharryandrosie · 22/05/2008 16:03

egg you sound so fed up- i hope the docs are a help to you and Rebecca tomorrow

i also do not wake a sleeping baby i think they need the sleep for their development etc- i found with ds if he had good sleep in the day he slept better at night and vice versa!!!!

Egg · 22/05/2008 16:18

Thanks sarah. Am v fed up . She wont touch it.

omy · 22/05/2008 18:56

Egg - feel so for you and DD! Isn't it funny how they seem to feel better after they throw up?! I hope you have some help tomorrow.

I went to bed at 7.30pm last night too!! Got to yoga so late that it was too full and we were turned away. Burst into tears so I figured I'd better have an early night and take my mood to bed!

tyaca · 22/05/2008 20:24

hey egg, dr tomo will help. so tough with crying too. you think you're nails to it, but i think you become resitant to the cries you know and understand, dif story when tempo up's and you cant understand// fix it. glad dr's appointment is tomo - sooner you see him/her, sooner things can be right'ed. feels strange for you to be low here on this thread, even tho' you've twice as much as the rest of us, you always seem so on top of things . hope you have a good evening.

rozzyraspberry · 22/05/2008 21:35

Good luck with docs Egg - I hope they're helpful.

Beany - hope everything went well today.

Haylstones - your lo's night time routine is similar to ours. He goes down at 7, either wakes around 9.30/10 for a feed or I wake him, then he's up around 2 and 5 then gets up around 7 (ds1 and ds2 can only contain their noise levels for so long). We did have a couple of weeks where he was only getting up once in the night but we seem to be back to twice now.

I never have to wake a sleeping baby during the day - I'm lucky if he sleeps for an hour at a time and he never sleeps for more than 2.5 hours in total during the day.

Lucyand2 · 23/05/2008 09:23

beany - hope hospital was fine

Egg - hope they get DD sorted out quickly, it must be very stressful for you all!

As for smear tests, I went yesterday but was told you can't have them until 6 months after your baby is born because it will give you a false abnormal. I wish they'd told me this before as we cut short my (belated) birthday trip out to go. I also spoke to her about my afternoon sickness and she told me to do another test in a weeks time. Fingers (and legs) crossed that the sickness goes away!!!!

beansprout · 23/05/2008 09:38

Hi, hope it goes ok today Egg, that sounds very stressful. I imagine it's hard enough keeping the plates spinning already without something else being thrown into the equation.

Hospital was ok. Scan was alright although nodes are still big (2cm+). Report will go to GP next week and need to check in 2-3 weeks to see if they have gone down. If not, will need further tests. Ds1 was a star and just lay really still while "the special hospital tele showed the inside of his neck".

Hayl - that sounds like a very similar routine to ours.
Rozzy - that is about the sum total of the naps in our house too. Am so relieved to read that, I tend to think that everyone else's babies are sleeping and mine aren't!

saskia71 · 23/05/2008 12:17

Hi All,

I?ve been away for ages, life has been so busy. My MIL has just sold her house in London and is staying with us until her new flat is ready. She wants to experience Marcus growing up and will just be 5 minutes drive away. My biggest bugbear about her stay is that the shower in her bathroom is leaking so she is using ours. Bathroom place is taking an eternity with getting the goods in. Other than that it is very nice having her with us.

Will be seeing the cosmetic surgeon next month, but all the work in the gym is beginning to have an effect and I won?t be needing a tummy tuck.

We now have very experienced consultant paediatrician for Marcus. I believe in having proactive health checks, and his next one is in 2 months time. It is so reassuring to have expert help on hand, and the fact I can phone if I have a concern. He is a lovely guy and hopefully will be looking after Marcus for years. There is absolutely nothing wrong with him (Marcus) other than a bit of reflux. He suggested we try SMA Staydown. This has actually improved matters, although it is not perfect.

The downside is that it only comes in powdered form, and I am more or less tied to the kitchen skin making up feeds all day, (can?t keep the feed for more than 3 hrs)! The water for all of this has to be boiled and refrigerated. The whole process is unbelievably time consuming. I long for the days when all I did was pop a sterile teat on a bottle, and throw the whole thing away. As a present to myself I am at this minute having a new kitchen sink put in and a gorgeous Dornbracht tap. With no new clothes on the horizon, my treats are kitchen and bathroom projects. Isn't it sad? I better see if the plumbers want any tea.

Oh, and I changed all my bottles to glass after reading articles in the chemistry press about PBA. I now have redundant complete sets of Avent bottles and of Dr Browns. Hope no more changes. Have a lovely weekend, will have a read later to catch up.

leesmum · 23/05/2008 13:36

Beany glad everything went ok at the hospital yesterday, i was thinking about you xx

Saskia great to hear from you, it sounds like you have your hands full with having to make all that formula up, don't be too disheartened it won't last forever, before you know it Marcus will be on solids and hopefully be more contented P.S can i have your tummy tuck if you don't need it

Tyaca i LOVE football and im gutted we're not it europe this summer, i think i'll have to support Portugal, simply because Ronaldo should be on top form!

Guess what i was doing this time last year? Yes thats right, taking a pregnancy test, i remember it being the bank holiday weekend and my sisters son was being christened and i voluntered to drive so no one was wondering why i wasn't drinking! My how time flies.

Anyone doing anything exciting this weekend? i think we might chance a barbie if its nice on sun

rozzyraspberry · 23/05/2008 14:02

Hi everyone.

Glad hospital went ok beany. Yup ds3 doesn't sleep much in the day either. Up to at least 18months old ds1 slept for 3/3.5 hours at lunch time every day - I didn't fully appreciate that at the time - oh to have 3 hours to myself every day!

I found a lump on the back of ds2 neck yesterday so took him to the doctors today. It's just a swollen gland so feel a bit daft for asking for a same day appointment but it is bigger than a pea (which is quite big for a small boy) and round the back so I wasn't 100% sure what it could be. Anyway all ok.

Egg - have you seen the gp yet?

DH is busy making a pirates outfit for a pirates and princesses party that ds2 has tomorrow. It looks really good - dh is so much better at that sort of thing than I am. Artistic I ain't.

Hi saskia - nice to hear from you again.

Hi leesmum - I'm afraid I'm not a football fan - perhaps because I'm scottish and we've not had much success in recent years!

tyaca · 23/05/2008 14:06

bean lol at special tv ... not quite as relaxing as the apprentice tho' i guess. glad all ok.

hiya saskia - now if i had the chance for plastic surgery, think i'd go for lipo on thighs instead ... reckon i could fit into the waists of most of my pre-preg jeans if i could just get them over my legs.

leesmum - i remember checking your profile ages ago and being that match of the day was listed as a favourite telly programme ... give me a nice test series any day of the week (or every day of week, i guess would be more accurate!)

this time last year, i was.... celebrating my 30th . i was just thinking about how much has changed since then. after a couple of unprotected sexings in the spring, we'd decided to stop being so silly and to think about trying for a baby in sept ... still have no idea when it happened, tho' i did spend ages worrying that i'd been preg for my 30th celebrations. this year'll be a lot quieter my parents taking us our for lunch tomo to a fab indian canteen place in tooting, but that'll be it i think.

tyaca · 23/05/2008 14:08

hi rozzy - x-posted with you, sry to hear abour your fright with ds2 and glad all ok. just seen my last post and am appalled and my overuse of emoticions...

Egg · 23/05/2008 15:43

Hey Saskia, try doing it with two babies, one who doesn't feed properly so goes through about 10 bottles a day, then you really would feel tied to the kitchen sink.

Egg · 23/05/2008 15:51

Sorry Rozzy did not read your post. DD has one of those too. I was told if it is movable it is just a harmless cyst. Hers is also like a pea under the skin.

Doc has referred us to a paediatrician so will get an appt through soon hopefully. He said there is nothing obviously wrong but was worried about her lack of feeding and dropping off the chart in weight. I think I prob said but it might have been on another thread that she is now eating less than the "guidelines" say for a TWO WEEK OLD.

Egg · 23/05/2008 15:56

Sorry (again). Beany glad hospital went ok, fingers crossed those nodes go down completely soon.
