hi iris! Long time no see!

Hi everyone else, just checking in. no news this end apart from DD having an awful cold and a bit of a chesty cough, bless her. Will see how she is tomorrow before i decide on whether to go to the doctor's.

hope everyone else is well!

Hiya honey (sad person grateful that someone remembers her..)- croup is doing the rounds so if she sounds whoopy then boiling a kettle in her room may help (maybe doing that tonight) x

RGPargy · 22/06/2008 22:12

Oh gawd, what does croup sound like???

She was coughing earlier and couldn't really catch her breath or get up a good go at coughing to get it out so i had to distract her and take her for a wonder around the house to calm her down a bit. Is that croup?

OP posts:
iris66 · 22/06/2008 22:25

Difficulty catching their breath is one sign but really, croup isn't that bad (neither is whooping cough - I've seen children with it. horrid for the parents but clearly survivable and without any alternative medication!) DD had croup and I was beside myself but it's scarier for you than them. There is a definate whoop to their cough with croup/whooping cough and they seem not to be able to catch their breath and can get a bit blue around the mouth. Clearly, if you're worried call the doc but boiling kettles in the room helps and/or taking them outside where it's colder so all the swollen bits in their airways constrict can help breathing. Sometimes the docs prescribe steroids to calm things down. If you're worried, call NHS direct.

RGPargy · 23/06/2008 09:11

hmm i think perhaps it was just a coughing fit. i'll phone the docs in a bit anyway and see if they can squeeze her in, just to be on the safe side.

OP posts:
iris66 · 23/06/2008 19:25

Is she better now RG?
I ended up taking DS to the Dr this evening as he was so wheezy and couldn't catch his breath. Got some steroid syrup so hoping for a peaceful night!

RGPargy · 23/06/2008 19:39

hi iris

DD is much better today, thanx. Her nose has stopped running and the cough only materialises every now and then and not half as ferocious as it was yesterday, thankfully. As she appears to be getting much better, i didn't call the doctor in the end. I'm sure she'll carry on getting better.

Hope DS feels better soon, the poor love!! Fingers crossed you both get some rest tonight, eh?

silkcushion · 23/06/2008 20:47

hello IrisGlad the babies are ok. Megan seems to have a permanent wheeze - hospital consultant says nowt to worry about - lots of tiny babies have wheezy chests until their airways get bigger.Megan has spent the day with my mum and I'm not sure who was happier when I got home from work - it was a Granny/Meggy lovefest!

Greedygirl · 24/06/2008 08:12

Ah poor babies! Hope everyone on the road to recovery. Anyone any idea when allergies start to show up? My DH has really bad hayfever and I am hoping that Adam hasn't inherited it but have a feeling that it doesn't show up for a few years?

Hi Iris, nice to see you (Sarahloumadam here, I had a name change).

Well I am v.excited because my friend has asked me to be her bridesmaid and I have never been one before! Going to try the dress on later today. Tried to go yesterday but Adam decided a long snooze/snack session was in order!

Went to see Indiana Jones the other night but kept dozing off! Adam is currently giving us a 5 o'clock alarm call every morning. Wasn't v.impressed with the film but hard to tell if it was crap or if I was just too tired to appreciate it. Anyone else seen it?

Febes · 24/06/2008 15:52

Hi. We have our mortgage offer- Hurrah!!!!! About bloody time!! So hopefully it will be action stations and we can move end of next week.
We had friends of my parents staying over the weekend and they offered to babysit on saturday night so we went to London which I haven't done in over a year which is shocking considering I live 10 mins walk from the northern line. It was so nice we went to Gordans wine bar at embankment. Its old and dark and dingy with candles on every table. Very no frills but great. We had wine and a lovely cheese board and talked and had a great time.
Nursery is going ok and they all love anabel so I'm pretty happy with it. only 4 more weeks till the holiday though so I can't wait for that.

jetgirl · 24/06/2008 16:00

Febes - hooray! Hope the rest of the move goes smoothly now.

iris - helloo again. Lots of people have been re-emerging lately, nice to have you back

greedy - hope you enjoy being a bridesmaid. What's the dress like?

rg - hope Ellie's feeling better. I think there's lots of chesty things about at the moment. Chickenpox is doing the rounds here, so I expect William to get that soon!

I'm being naughty and mnetting at work as I can't face the pile of marking I have to do before I'm next in next week. At least my working week is over now, though next week I have to come in for 2 Inset days as well as my 2 teaching days, which is annoying. We're etting our new timetables next week. I shall be working Modays and Thursday which is really nice - a 3 day weekend evry weekend!!
Better get my red pen out and finish this so I can leave and get my babies!!

ChocolateHobnob · 24/06/2008 16:15

Hi all

brief message from me - we exchanged!!! hurrah. Due to complete on Thurs.

What a profound relief.

Febes bet you're relieved too. Everything is taking so long at the mo.

Hugs to everyone else!

Greedygirl · 25/06/2008 08:45

Brilliant news Chocolate, v.pleased for you! Hope the move goes ok.

Jet - yuk, don't mention the "m" word I hate marking! Exams are the best! The bridesmaid dress is quite traditional but absolutely brilliant for a new mum like myself with a dodgy tum and boobs that need a helping hand, it is a bodice and skirt, very structured. I'll post a pic when I get a mo. The bride wants it to be red, I have always wanted to wear a red dress and the perfect excuse to buy some red shoes.

Great news about your mortgage too Febes and v re your night out, sounds great.

Off to Ikea today (yuk!). Speak later x

ChocolateHobnob · 25/06/2008 08:59

I hate marking too!!!! And agree exams are better than essays. Blimey there are a lot of teachers on this thread, aren't there?!

The dress sounds lovely Greedy, please post pics. I hate going to IKEA though, commiserations.

Where's Loopy???

Wont be around after today for a while cos of moving, so hugs to you all and hope I'll be back soon! x

Febes · 25/06/2008 15:06

Good luck with the move Choc I'll be thinking of you. I have all that packing ahead of me.....

RGPargy · 25/06/2008 18:27

Good luck for the move Choc!!

Hope everyone is well!

We have started BLW now, but as we were feeding on purees, we are still doing that, alongside BLW. As she gets impatient when she's hungry, i just give her some form of mash/puree and then after that, i give her more food to have a munch on, BLW stylee. So far she's only had banana but tomorrow i'm giving her brocolli. I really like watching her pick up the food and feed herself. It's amazing that she actually knows it's food to eat!

sam86 · 26/06/2008 15:50

hiya everyone! my internets been playing up so havent been able to get on, hope your all ok - i will have to catch up on thread!

just wanted to say raimees christening was really good, ended up having a party at my sisters house as it meant we could afford a buffet and the drinks for everyone as well. it was really good and most ppl ended up drunk by mid afternoon! raimee was gorgeous in her dress, and when the priest was pouring the water on her head, she stuck her hand in the font!! think that means shes that extra bit holy now lol. dps sister and mum got there late and then she didnt bother to come up with us. none of his side came the party either which was really annoying and made dp take roo to them for an hour afterwards.

rg- im doing the same with raimee with the BLW and purees, though the last couple of days she wont take savoury purees or food off a spoon - if its sweet she will tho (dont know who she got sweet tooth off ) so am mostly giving her finger foods now and then desert off a spoon.

on the subject of teeth! raimee cut her first tooth last thursday! its on the bottom front, only little at the moment!!

hope your al well, i will catch up properly soon! xx

sam86 · 26/06/2008 16:25

have put new pics up from christening and meal time! xx

RGPargy · 26/06/2008 20:48

Lovely pics Sam!! Glad the christening went well Good luck with BLW too. It's fun isn't it!!

OP posts:
jetgirl · 27/06/2008 15:04

sam- great pics - the top one is lovely, raimee has a lovely smile.

choc - hope the move goes smoothly, look forward to having you back with us soon.

William has his third tooth now. Every time one erupts he has a raging temperature the day before, doesn't sleep at night and then it appears. On Wednesday he should have gone down at 7.30 but finally went down at 3.15am! Only to wake again at 4.30. Needless to say i was knackered yesterday, but he was fine at bedtime yesterday.

The computer is playing up this afternoon and taking ages to do anything so I'll have to leave this for now. We're off for the weekend, up to the in-laws.

Have a nice few days

iris66 · 27/06/2008 21:13

Hi all - miserable rainy day here but got a new tumble drier delivered (paid for by my new E-bay selling obsession - am having a big house clear out!) so I don't care

Greedygirl - Allergies can develop at any time. They run strongly in our family (mainly eczema but DH gets very bad hayfever). DS1 showed dairy & strawberry allergy through BF and now has severe sesame allergy (we have an epipen) that developed at around 6mths (was using hummous as a weaning food - his face swelled up), he gets hives if he eats any fruit except peeled pear and our water makes his skin itch because of the chlorine in it . Intolerances ( ie getting the runs/a rash) can happen to anyone but if you have a history of allergy (particularly if you are blood group A, as they are most succeptable) be very aware of any kind of swelling & seek professional advice, even if there's been exposure to the allergen before (it takes a couple of exposures, at least before the body decides it's going to react)
. Hope you don't need this but best to know IMO.

Jetgirl - third tooth? aw bless. DS1's came thick and fast. Elliot just has two bottom teeth and no sign of more yet. I think he's concentrating his efforts on walking - he's so desparate to copy DS1 and stands up, holding onto anything he can, at every opportunity - I'm dreading him being an early walker I'll need eyes in my backside with the two of them

ChocolateHobNob - congratulations! Hope the move goes smoothly!

Sam - your pics are gorgeous . We're having a big naming day for Elliot in a couple of weeks (just hope the weather holds)

Seems like a lot of us are doing a mixture of BLW & purees. Must admit I wasn't brave enough to go exclusively for BLW so Elliot gets a load of stuff on his high chair tray in between me feeding him. He'll eat anything quite happily but tends to shove green beans in without chewing (and so chokes) so we're chopping them for now.
God, I'd forgotten how messy mealtimes were too bloody ricecrispies are the worst!!!!! I've taken to leaving them strewn on the floor until they harden (ie lunchtime ) before clearing them up as it's like trying to wipe up glue! Am such a slattern

By the way .... please tell me that I'm not the only person to be at seeing jars of babyfood aimed at 18mth old toddlers!!!!!! Elliot is almost on the same food as us (apart from meat/dairy) at 8 1/2 mths and yes, I give him jars (puds mainly) but at 18mths??!!!!! (I bought some animal biscuits yesterday whilst out & gave him one in his pushchair. He munched it quite happily and it wasn't until I got home that I noticed the packet "not suitable for children under 12mths" - and it wasn't because of the ingredients either. I checked and they were fine. "choking hazard" probably! am clearly a crap mother Do I care? Nope, not a jot
Have fabby weekends everyone x

iris66 · 27/06/2008 21:20

Greedygirl - just read back and thought I ought to add that food intolerances (and allergies)can cause a red "flare" where they've touched the skin (I know that tomatoes, strawberries, sesame & kiwi are very common for this but there may be others) just be aware that whatever food causes a flare may not be a good thing to continue with for a while (I was told to leave a month then try again) A baby's gut doesn't fully mature until it's about a year old. Hope that helps (and sorry to ramble but it's a subject very dear to my heart)

RGPargy · 27/06/2008 22:09

Hi Iris!

How can Elliot be 8 1/2 months already?!!! Where has the time gone?!

Ellie has zero teeth at nearly 7 months lol. I keep waiting for her to break out with one but nooooo, it just doesn't happen! She has got a bit of a rotten cold at the moment tho so i'm wondering if that's a sign that she'll get a tooth soon coz she's also on a fist munching mission too (her fists, not mine!).

As for BLW, we gave Ellie a slice of toast and butter today for lunch and OMG, she wolfed it down!! She took a huge bite out of one bit and shoved it all in and i thought she would surely have a gag on it, but nope. She sucked it for a bit and then swallowed it with no problem. i can believe how much she loved it! It was brilliant seeing her feed herself and the rest of the afternoon she was really happy and "operatic" vocally so i'm wondering if she was chuffed to bits on having fed herself too lol.

As for baby food for 18 months, well that is just You would have thought they'd be on the same food as everyone else wouldn't you! Having said that, i know people who feed their kids seperately and they dont eat the same, but they dont eat from jars!!

Greedygirl · 27/06/2008 23:24

Hiya
Thanks for that Iris, I will be on the look out for any reactions/swelling. Not a ramble at all, if DS suffers as DH suffers I will be v.sad but as you say, best to be prepared. He had some v.dry skin at 3 months and I thought - here we go - but that seems to be ok now. Lol at the rice crispies, we have just decorated the living room and Adam added the final touches with some weetabix this morning, I left it for the DH to see and just remembered that it is probably still there now!

RG - Glad you are enjoying the BLW, Adam loves toast too and cries if I have some without involving him. I am having problems with Adam at the mo because he has got the hang of stuffing food in and chewing it but not necessarily swallowing it so he gets a bit of a traffic jam going on then shouts at me! I am also giving him a sippy cup of water to have a go with which he loves but again, no swallowing. He gulps then spits then has a celebratory bang of the cup. Good job I'm not houseproud.

Jetgirl - bless William with those teeth, think Adam is working on some more, he has been very clingy and drooly.

Sam - glad the christening went well, great pics of your lovely girl. Sorry bout the stuff with the in-laws, how annoying.

Off to bed, speak soon x

RGPargy · 28/06/2008 10:47

Sarah - lol @ traffic jam in Adam's mouth, bless him. I gave Ellie another bit of toast this morning which she was still very keen on. She had a couple of gag moments, and on one occasion she had to swallow a really big piece which actually made her eyes water! She moaned a little about it but didn't cry and just carried on eating it! Last time that happened with banana, she burst into tears and was inconsolable so i had to rescue her from her highchair and give her milk instead. Think i'll try her on mango at lunchtime.
