Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
HollyPutTheKettleOn · 10/04/2008 16:28

PMSL daisy! You are not THAT old !

lilQuidditchKel · 10/04/2008 16:31

Daisy thx for the story - i wish I could say it is reassuring. Truth is as each day/week/month passes and not much new happens with DS, i get more worried. I wish also that I knew other bilingual children. You'd think in London that there would be some. Maybe I'll try posting in Meetups section... hmmm

Holly, a walking one already !! wow I'm dreading when DD finally figures out how to get moving. She's desperate to follow DS around. It's gonna be a nightmare over here when I've got 2 causing mayhem! Any idea what is causing the sleep problem? what do you do when he wakes?

lackaDAISYcal · 10/04/2008 16:31

oi, less of the "that" young lady, or i'll have to hobble over there and whack you with my zimmer frame

lackaDAISYcal · 10/04/2008 16:35

you need your dp to help you with the sleep training. we needed to do it with ds who took to waking up and screaming after being down for half an hour. we sorted it over a weekend and it was hard and emotionally very difficult for me (dh had to physically restrain me from going to him at one point), but well worth it.

i just realised that sounds harsh, but dh was going in to him and shush-patting every 10 to 15 mins. it was just me that was trying to stay away iyswim!

HollyPutTheKettleOn · 10/04/2008 16:39

Ds is a little bugger lilkel! Him and dd are a right double act, they egg each other on and end up raiding the snack drawer together or emptying the kitchen cupboards. It's going to be fun when ds is more secure on his feet !

I'm sure the sleep problem is my fault because I just take the easy route in the middle of the night and feed him back to sleep. I've just been having a look through some of the sleep threads and the Elizabeth Pantley book looks good, so I may give that a go.

Right, I'm off to put dinner on. Oven chips today, I can't be arsed to cook a proper dinner. I'm a bad mum!

TTFN xx

Sputnik · 10/04/2008 16:54

Holly, that sounds awful with the sleep, it could be he's all excited about walking and will calm down again soon. Don't buy the Elizabeth Pantley book, I will post you my copy, I don't need it anymore and would be happy to find a good home for it. I have your address somewhere, I will post it tomorrow.

Lilkel, my DD is bilingual, she really didn't say much at 2 years, and wasn't doing even 2 word sentences. Like you I would see her contepories rattling on and get worried. I think though at their age they're concentrating on 1 skill at a time, he'll get around to it. Let us know how it goes tomorrow.

lilQuidditchKel · 10/04/2008 16:59

Sputnik what's DD's other language just out of curiousity? How old is she now?

I know bilinguality automatically means delays, but I'm losing what little patience I had, and DS's tantrums and whining are getting worse instead of better...4 years sounds like an absolute fecking eternity to wait!!!!!!!

Holly I would swear by the Babywhisper for sleep hints as well. Same kind of calm and measured approach as Pantley - not too extreme.
check out the message board here, Sleep section. You probably need to do some pick up/ put down (PU/PD). good luck...

Sputnik · 10/04/2008 17:03

She is english/italian Lilkel.
Around 2 was the absolute worst for us with tantrums, it did get better!

Oh she'll be 4 in July. She understnds Italian very well but is still hesitant using it, which causes me worries infact, but she's a bit of a perfectionist and I'm sure she'll get there.

We speak only English in the family though, which probably explains it. Are you using 2 languages at home?

HollyPutTheKettleOn · 10/04/2008 17:18

Hi sputnik and MHC!

Thanks very much sputnik, I've just got your email. You are lovely! I was just looking for the book on amazon as well! Hopefully it'll work !

Yes MHC, ds is more of a PITA than when he was just crawling because he falls over a lot more! He doesn't really crawl any more, not properly anyway. He does the funny bear crawl with hands and feet and stands up and walks. Then he falls over and screams! He is also obsessed with climbing. He can get on chairs and sofas, so I have to really keep an eye on him.

Sputnik · 10/04/2008 17:19

LOL at the condolences

Sputnik · 10/04/2008 17:20

Cool Holly.
I will pack it up now

HollyPutTheKettleOn · 10/04/2008 17:29

Thank you, you angel! x

Sputnik · 10/04/2008 17:37

Right, that's done. I don't think I ever been so efficient in my entire life

Actually I think I must be having an efficient day, as I finally got around to booking a hair appointment, and organised with DD's old nursery to take Baby Sputnik in october. I know it's a long time til then but I'm quite excited! I am slowly getting some semblance of a life back (I even did some work yesterday).

Bumperlicious · 10/04/2008 17:58

Ria, you have mail

Bumperlicious · 10/04/2008 18:13

By the way the bumlove didn't bother me either!

Lilkel what's your other language? I am so of bilingual DC's. I would really like to get DD interested in languages. I have an A-level in Spanish and while I'm a bit rusty I can pick it (and French) up pretty quickly. Any tips on getting DC's interested.

MHC I want to do the NCT BFC course and my BFC is interested in me doing it but I can't focus at the moment. Once I am settled back at work I will think about it again. You have to get quite involved with NCT for them to fund you so I need to work on that.

lilQuidditchKel · 10/04/2008 18:36

well it might sound wonderful to have bilingual DCs but trust me, what we are living through now is such a nightmare...DS is at this very moment wailing in his sister's cot because I am fed up with his antics today. I took him to Kew Gardens for a massive play session and it just wound him up and made him do every naughty thing he could think of. I try so hard to be patient, help him, repeat, repeat repeat but he's going on Ebay unless he wakes up a different child. I'm totally convinced he'd be more manageable if he could only TALK. Gahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Bumper it's German btw.

lilQuidditchKel · 10/04/2008 18:39

oh and MHC he does look at you, smile, and make some sounds. Problem is they are the same 4 sounds, approximating the same 10 words, with utter reluctance to repeat even the smallest sound, and absolutely infuriating amounts of whining, grunting, eh-eh-eh type sounds when he points at something, and the gap between what he understands and what he expresses is getting wider every day.

FrazzledFairyFay · 10/04/2008 19:22

Hello everyone. I've been intermittently lurking and reading and have promptly forgotten most things, so sorry if I've missed anything major.

Congrats Daisy on the scan, it must be a big weight off your mind

Lilkel, I don't have any experience of bilingualism I;m afraid but I hope all goes well tomorrow

DS is properly walking now, and his favourite trick is climbing onto DD's small wicker chair and then standing up - panic inducing for me so that is being banished tonight which will upset DD, but I can't risk a big fall. He is still quite unsteady, mainly because he seems to be trying to run rather than walk, so lots of bumps and bruises here.

I bought him his first shoes on Monday and he looks like a proper toddler in them. It is very cute but also makes me a bit as I feel like he's not my baby anymore.

We went to legoland yesterday which was really great.

lilQuidditchKel · 10/04/2008 19:27

I love Legoland!!!!

I am quite too about DD becoming a toddler. She's not walking quite yet but I think in her little mind, she's definitely on par with her big brother! Keeps shunning the baby food now and just wants to cram whatever normal food we're having into her mouth even though she's only got two half-teeth and chokes on quite a bit of it!

little diva won't go off to sleep tonight tho -

FrazzledFairyFay · 10/04/2008 19:30

Me too, we've got season tickets now and DD loves the little train in Duplo-land so I think we'll be going very regularly over the summer

lackaDAISYcal · 10/04/2008 19:34

I was thinking that about DD earlier; she is definately no baby any more....but then it won't be long till i get another newborn to snuggle and smell

she has been a right little madam today. someone has taken away my lovely, happy, smiley, eat anything bub and given me an identical looking one that scowls, moans, whinges and refuses to eat . tonight she had some carrot soup and was actually shuddering as she was eating it. Everything I giver her to feed herself gets shoved onto the floor, and if i spoon feed her it comes right back out again. She has less of an issue with jars of mush, but I hate the fact that she is shunning all my lovely home-made food. We started off so well too.

FrazzledFairyFay · 10/04/2008 19:47

I had a bit of that tonight too Daisy. I had some lovely homemade butternut squash and chicken for him which he spat out, and instead wolfed a jar of vegetable pasta which I thought tasted really bland. I really wonder why I bother sometimes
