Needed a new thread...

DD2 is much better today, she ate some fruity toast for her tea last night and loved it. And it didn't reappear an hour later either!
Have been to a mnmeet in Harrogate today, DD2 is starting to enjoy play dates now, especially this one as there was a fantastic baby section for her to play in!

OP posts:

I can't remember which of us are SAHM, part or full time, but does anyone leave the tv on all day? I put on a tweenies video once in the morning and once in the afternoon (to get cleaning, cooking, washing etc done! And it has to be this certain video) and for that 30-odd minutes ds is GLUED to the tv, won't even blink.
The rest of the day, naps and food aside, we are either out or playing inside, but when at home I always have the tv on (usually another children's video, which doesn't get his full attention but does get some) and I've noticed now and then he does watch whatever's going on.

Is this a bad idea? I'm worried by having the tv on all day it might affect him ie less interested in playing and learning and more interested in tv. ATM this dratted tweenies video is still preferred to anything else!

I just think the house would be so quiet without the tv as it's just me and ds....

Any thoughts/opinions?

dolbear · 24/01/2005 20:43

lunavix
as a SAHM
I also have the TV on when I am here most of the time , but I make sure that it is snly thing that he wants @ certain times i.e. elmo or tiny pops , which plays kiddies tunes for 1 hr every other hr the rest of the time i have the news or something else that just does not ' do ' it for him seems to work , cos like you i find the hse 2 quiet otherwise ( he also thinks the heinz mayo ad is v funny go figure

dot1 · 25/01/2005 09:16

I'm at work full-time but dp is a SAHM and at the moment the TV's on a fair amount of the day because ds1's current obsession is The Sound of Music...! (he even wants to be called Maria - he adores her!). Ds2 now loves the songs so they both play quite happily while Julie Andrews sings for most of the day in the background!!

Chuffed · 25/01/2005 11:22

tv is on most of the time in the weekends as not SAHM. dd not really interested in TV at all, but then again we don't have children's programs on, she would much prefer to watch photos of herself appear on the screen saver on the computer (also in the lounge) and on most of the time.
We have some children's cd's with songs like wheels on the bus, where is thumbkin and her favourite one is a cd which is sung by children. She will stand and dance against the couch or sit and sway in time to the music.

Have to laugh dot about sound of music, must be driving dp up the wall, and the mugging, I think dd would be a mugger for a rusk too, probably using distraction to get it such as a big open mouth licky kiss on the cheek or forehead.

dd is at nursery today in retro clothing (looks too cute for words). While in NZ my mum dug out some of mine and my sisters clothes and in the pile was one of those kilt pinafore dresses with the white singlet sown onto the kilt. She has it on with stockings, little green boots and a cashmere high neck jumper...too gorgeous if I may say so which I do.

I think this week will be a long one, busily trying to plan our Easter holiday now as dd's nursery closes down for a week so it seems a waste to have to take days off and not go somewhere. Can you tell I'm a travel addict

dot1 · 25/01/2005 13:30

Chuffed - am ashamed to say that dp got him into his Sound of Music obsession as she too is addicted, so they're all happy to watch it all day...

The other night I found Ds1 singing "Climb every Mountain" whilst scaling his beanbag!!!

lunavix · 25/01/2005 13:34

rofl@beanbag mountain!

I am now the proud owner of about 8 tweenies videos.. it's one called 'songtime' which is the only one he watches. Sits there glued to it. Except for one song he doesn't like 'fingers all.. fingers all.. where are you?' which he will cry/grizzle/scream throughout depending on his mood till it's fastforwarded through!

MrsDoolittle · 25/01/2005 19:34

I can't say dd watches tv either. Our tastes must be too boring - the news or documentaries. During the week there is no time as I usually come straight in from work, having picked dd up on the way, then tea-time, bath and bed. Very boring . We don't usually have the tv on at all during the day.
Dd's main entertainment happens to be our pet beagle which she loves, as does Sasha love her because she is usually the recipient of most of dd's finger food! The only thing absolutely garanteed to make her smile.
Back to nursery today. Unfortunately I was absolutely gutted when the staff informed me that she was fine herself but she had been "absolutely horrendous!" Seemingly dd has been spoilt by the one to one attention last week (well she was very sick!) and wouldn't put up with other babies being fed before her. Apparently she shouted all the way through every mealtime. I was soo upset to hear my baby being described as horrendous. It must have been very obvious as the nursery nurse did apologise for upsetting me.

This thread does make me smile though, I mean the breadstick mugging and the beanbag mountain

Fennel · 25/01/2005 20:01

I thought you couldn't spoil a 9 month baby? (though I do my best to spoil dd3).

I would prefer Sound of Music to endless tweenies/teletubbies/thomas etc. dd3 not interested in TV.

dd3 is 21 lb, not 18 as I guessed a few days ago - that must have been when she was 6 months old...

mrs D if you need a smile check out the other thread with links to how to knit or sew your own nappies.

LucyJones · 25/01/2005 20:40

Evening everyone Ds often plays with his toys in the lounge whilst I watch the news/neighbours/a video and he occasionally glances at the TV and randomly smiles and laughs at it (even if no one is smiling at him!!). Because he can't crawl he cries in rage if he knocks a toy out of his reach - it's quite funny to watch (mean mummy that I am!). We've got our health check tomorrow (and free bookstart books - yippee!) so will find out how much he weighs. He was 20lb in November so reckon he'll be massive!!

so its just my ds who thinks the heinz mayo ad is v funny then ? ah well !
i am sooo backward - bookstart ? never heard of it !
am v worried about my back and ribs , am getting a kind of knum sensation now , that can't be good !

TracyK · 26/01/2005 08:43

ds up and playing at 5am this morning! I think I need to have a coffee before I try and start work.
I wonder if I need to re think ds napping/sleep time - he seems to be happy enough to have only 11-12 hours a day sleep. Is this right for a 10.5 mo?

dot1 · 26/01/2005 08:59

Morning!

oooh - ds stood up for the first time last night - and I got to see it!!! Poor old dp - she looks after him all day every day and then when she's in the kitchen he decides to do something new..! Mind you, I was reading a book in the lounge, trying hard to ignore him and ds1 and when I looked up ds2 was stood up against the wall (very precariously..!). Watched him like a hawk from then on - turns out he's got a very good system of hoisting himself up on the very hard, dangerous marble fireplace, then stands holding onto the wall looking very pleased with himself.

Lovely to see him upright and looking like such a big boy . Sad to think the baby days really are over...

Chuffed · 26/01/2005 09:26

Morning everybody!
What's bookstart? Were we supposed to get books from the HV?
I'd be a bit peeved off too MrsD. All babies yell when they are hungry and want their food - your dd must have been very patient in the past. Could they not have just given her some finger food in the meantime.
Well done dot ds standing - it does make you say goodbye to your baby doesn't it.
Have a good day everybody

dot1 · 26/01/2005 10:05

Mrs D - I think it's a bit outrageous that they said that about your dd - no baby is "horrendous" - that's a ridiculous thing to say and very insensitive. Reminds me of when our ds1 used to go to a childminder (she was utterly mad - was so glad when he started going to nursery instead) and she always used to say he was spoilt - he was only 5 months old! Makes you feel awful though.

Don't listen to them and maybe have a word with the manager if you're still feeling upset - they should have some sort of awareness about what is upsetting for a parent to hear...

MrsDoolittle · 26/01/2005 11:21

Thanks girls. I am still smarting over it to be honest. Dm was annoyed too. Dh, though, thought I was completely over-reacting. He said I have to get used to people saying unkind things about my daughter because they will. I think that's rubbish, more like he's afraid of me laying into someone in a protective rage should someone dare suggest she's anything other than perfect .
Anyway, the nursery nurse was positively 'fawning' over us this morning when I dropped dd off.

Anyway, I hope all is going well with everyone else. Seems like I have been moaning on here constantly for the last couple of weeks.
HD has been quiet lately, I guess she must be busy too.
LucyJones - I recognise your ds's rage because his toys are out of reach. Dd is the same, she can't crawl yet either and gets really stroppy when she can't reach things she wants. I can see it now, she'll be into everything once she does. First stop will be the dogs bed, I bet

Chuffed · 26/01/2005 12:21

just found this about bookstart:
Booktrust, the founders and administrators of the Bookstart programme in the UK are delighted to confirm that Margaret Hodge the Minister for Children has announced that Bookstart in England is to be centrally funded in 2004/05 by the Sure Start Unit.

This government funding, together with sponsorship from childrens? publishers and Red House Books, part of the Book People, means that a Bookstart pack of free books and materials, will be accessible to every baby in England in 2004/05.

Library and Education services work with health visitors to ensure the pack is given to parents at the baby?s eight month health check.

In the current financial year, devolved administrations are providing funding for Bookstart. In England local authorities have needed to purchase the Bookstart packs and although the packs are greatly subsidised by sponsorship from the book trade, finding local funding for Bookstart packs has been difficult.

The new, Sure Start funding support for next year will mean a Bookstart pack for every child in England. Library and Education services and Health Visitors have welcomed this wonderful news. Booktrust will shortly be inviting every authority to join the programme and we will strive to ensure that we reach as many children as possible in 2004/05 .

Bookstart is currently running across most of the UK and parents should contact their local heath visitor or library to see how they can receive a Bookstart pack this year.

Rosemary Clarke, Head of Bookstart says; ?Bookstart encourages families to enjoy stories, songs and rhymes. Parents are children?s first and most enduring teachers and we believe that every home can be a place where learning is valued and books are fun. This funding support from Sure Start is the most wonderful news that we could have had?.

I'll be contacting the HV then...

MrsDoolittle · 26/01/2005 12:26

I didn't know about this either
I'll be onto the hv too

dot1 · 26/01/2005 13:26

we got some books at ds's 8 months check - I think about 3 books and they're really good, so definitely chase them up about it!

LucyJones · 26/01/2005 15:13

Hi sorry only just saw that some people didn't know about bookstart. Basically at the hearing test (think it's normally 8/9 months - not sure why your dd has had 2 already Yorkiegirl?!!) the health visitor should give you a bookstart bag with 2 or 3 books in, info about the library etc. Definitely make sure you get them - free stuff is the best

lunavix · 26/01/2005 15:45

Ds has had his 7/8/9 month check... no books or hearing test... hmm must get onto HV.

On the mugging breadsticks train of thought, took ds to monkey music today. Stole the little boy next to him's drum, then his beater and then his rattle!
Funny for the other mum, I was mortified!

dolbear · 26/01/2005 20:59

oh lunavix , funny , but oops at least the other mum saw the funny side , I would too !
ight on to the old HV and fight for my right for free books , power to the mums , u see if i was not on this thread I would never have been any the wiser !!! thank you organised and well informed peeps !!
off to gp for hearts , lungs and bits tomorrow THEN i make a call to get the check

Hi all (I'm still here MrsD ). My dd is doing a lot of shouting at the moment - think she's just trying to communicate really. lunavix - the sing and sign dvd sounds good, have you got it yet? All this talk of Bookstart books has strengthened my resolve to ring the HVs and find out if they want dd to come in for her check or not. I still use the cloth bag we got ds's books in 5 years ago.
Fennel - how is dd2 doing re school now? Ds cried his first two days and then we bribed him to be brave... DH takes him to school and says he hardly gives a backward glance these days!
