earthquake........ Blimey. Hope you're all ok MrsFish.

FloriaTosca · 27/02/2008 08:05

5.2 on the Richter scale..epicentre Market Rasen in Linconshire ...didn't feel a thing on this side of the Pennines ...or perhaps I was just too busy catching up on 5 months of sleep deprivation ... not 4 but 5am this morning!!! Can you believe it???

MrsFish · 27/02/2008 08:15

All ok, its all on the news now

Am knackered, not only woken by the earthquake which was really exciting (boys slept through it) but Ben has been waking loads in the night over the past week or so now. Not sure what to do, he is on solids and also having on average 30-36 ounces of milk. I don't think its his teeth as he isn't red cheeked or dribbling yet

gemmamc · 27/02/2008 09:00

I was too busy with screaming/hungry DS to hear the earthquake I guess....Good because being from Italy I am terrified of them - they are much more dangerous over there - and I would have been really worried if I had felt it...

Floria,
could you please send me the sleep document?? Please please? I am pretty desperate...still getting up loads at night. DS has a cold, so hopefully this is the reason he wakes up so much, but I am afraid he is getting into the habit of waking up as well...

[email protected]

FloriaTosca · 27/02/2008 09:34

Gemma; I've sent it, hope it helps you as much as it did me.

gemmamc · 27/02/2008 10:46

Got it! Thanks so much.....will try it although I suspect I may have to wait until ds's cold goes away before anything really changes. Poor thing, he wakes up because he can't breathe....

FloriaTosca · 27/02/2008 10:51

Ahh poor wee mite...colds are evil.
I suppose you have tried the saline nasal drops? and the disgusting sucky unblocker tube thing? My lo hates them,... but they work.Hope he gets better soon and you get some rest (at last)

nellieloula · 27/02/2008 11:32

morning all. hope you all had good nights - despite the earthquake! how exciting. we're good here - Madeleine had a really lovely christening on Sunday, was unbelievably well behaved all day - she had one hour's sleep in the morning and then smiled all day. Not a single peep out of her, and she even giggled when she was covered with water. Amazing. And even better, she has only needed one feed for the past 2 nights.....shouldn't have said it out loud in case we jinx it, but that has been great. Although I'd forgotten how knackered it makes you feel when you suddenly get more sleep right - beter go hope everyone else is ok and enjoying the sunshine.

Dalrymps · 27/02/2008 11:52

floria - could you send me that sleep doc? last night was ok but night before 3 feeds
earthquake! wow, kind of find that exciting, don't know why, kind of wish i had felt it although i think i'm a bit far up north here!
well, it's dg's last day at his old job, he'll be so happy when he gets home tonight! I will be too... no more 14 hr days
Lovely blue skies here so might walk in to town later, hi to everyone and catch ya all soon

gemmamc · 27/02/2008 12:02

FT - I've tried the nasal unblocker thingy many times but it doesn't work! Perhaps not doing it right. And the saline drops? How do they work? Bought them but not sure how to use them... am hopeless...!

muppetgirl · 27/02/2008 13:04

Hi all

Henry had 9oz straight down at 12 so I made another bottle and he had another 4ozs! He's not interested in baby rice at all, it just sits in his mouth...

He's having far less bottles but more volume each time but he is having less milk in a 24 hr period iyswim. He was feeding every 3 ish hrs and is now every 4/5/6. No sure what to do, if anything, but are a little concerened as he woke early again this morning. Didn't want milk so I can't figure out if it's teeth or hunger at the mo. Aren't lo's great? - you just get to grips with one thing and then the routine changes completely!

As to colds poor you and lo! I can imagine you've tried it all by now...have you tried sutting the bathroom door and turning the shower/bath taps on to create steam? I've heard one friend do this. Also, when Ollie had a cold we always had the window opened as a stuffy room can make them more bunged up whereas the fresh air can help. (Again, something to try but might not work!) Vicks/Olbus oli in water on a radiator?

tLES - I will send a photo honestly! Dh is much better at these things!

Mine · 27/02/2008 14:47

muppet.. what kind of baby rice have you sampled...??
My ds didn't like the plain baby rice, but guzzled down the apple & Strawberry flavoured one as it had a sweetish taste, he then was happy to sample all other foods.

He even went to grab my toast this morning but i think that was out of curiosity!!

MrsFish · 27/02/2008 15:36

I started Ben on Baby Porridge first it is much nicer than the plain baby rice. I have also started giving him the mediteranean (sp?) vegetable and rice one too. He scoffs it down now and still has a good 6-8oz bottle afterwards. Yesterday he had 36oz's of milk and food I am upping the food to 3 meals and milk today to see if I can settle him, but so far he is still ready for his next feed after 3 hours.

J2O · 27/02/2008 15:58

hi all.

we all slept through the earthquake too, Shanno has slept through the last 2 nights till 7, and then woke dd1 babbling but not me because her room is further away from mine so dd1 talks to her till i get up at 7.30-its great! i think its because she has had a couple of spoonfuls of baby porridge the last 2 days, although i've run out now, so i trued her with baby rice today and she was not impressed and spat it at me and it landed in her eye, bless her, it was funny though!

mrsF-i can't believe how much Ben is eating! little piggy!

oh now dd1 has come in and ruined my concentration, can't remember a thing i was going to say!

sorry for all those now getting sleep and who's lo had cold? gem? i think the saline drops restrict the swelling in the nose for about 20 mins, so put a drop or 2 up the nose before a feed, right gotta go and beat dd1 up!

only kidding btw

xx

FloriaTosca · 27/02/2008 16:31

Gemmac; my saline comes as an aerosol so its fairly easy to administer (though you have to be careful not to spray too much)...but my friend has the dropper type which she uses by putting her ds on his back on her lap with his head on her knees,(when he is quiet and reasonably still) she then drops her legs so his head is tilted downwards a little (ie nostrils up and towards her)and then quickly drops a couple of drops into each nostril...she waits till he wriggles then sits him up waiting for the sneeze...very effective! Good luck!

Mine · 27/02/2008 16:40

i had the same problem with ds a few weeks ago.... the GP suggested that i suck............ yes suck the snot out of his nose to get him breath easier as he can't blow hard enough to get it out!
I know it sounds disgusting but it really did work.
The saline drops didn;t work for us as he hated having them put in, the liquid just dribbled out and i never quite knew if any actually went it.
The things us mothers do for our lo's !
dh couldn'r bring himself to do it........ wimp!

Stefka · 27/02/2008 19:54

Hey all!

Finally a few seconds to come on line and say hi! Dareh seems to have given up napping during the day - not sure why. He's also up loads at night and I am so desperate for sleep!

Floria please can I have this thing you are sending everyone - I need all the help I can get - [email protected]

I hope everyone is well and that Dareh starts to nap again so I can get back on line more often!

gemmamc · 27/02/2008 20:27

Thanks everyone for the tips on how to deal with the cold. Sucking the snot sounds disgusting but I am desperate and that's the next one I'll try!

Stefka, ds has also started being quite difficult to settle for naps and will only sleep in the pram (so I am forced to walk around a lot even when I am really tired from all those bad nights - oh well, at least it's good for fitness)....not sure if this is also related to the cold or there are other reasons but it certainly is very hard not to have a break ever...

muppetgirl · 27/02/2008 20:40

Gave H a bit of banana (ollie loved it, was the first thing he had) but he didn't look very keen. Managed about 1 teaspoon so we'll see.

nellieloula · 27/02/2008 20:53

sorry to hear about the colds. we have one here too.. not nice. hope you all manage to get some sleep and rest tonight.

just wanted to ask a quick question though to those who have other DC's - does your LO have all its day time naps in its cot? Just realised the other day that M has all her naps on the go, which I know isn't great but to be honest seems to be the only way I can do it - no way I can leave DS on his own whilst I settle her for a sleep. would be very interested to hear what others do and for top tips if you all use the cot! thanks.

fingers crossed for an earthquake free evening with lots of sleep!

ChocolateHobnob · 27/02/2008 21:05

hi Nellie, briefly --

DD was the worst napper ever, she hated daytime sleep and would go all starey, as Alice put it - now she does nap, mainly on the go as she likes motion but also in the swing. I got a takeaway swing for my parents house too but she wont sleep in that, only in our huge one!

No way would she nap in a bed/cot/keeping still.

She still wakes up every 45 mins at night and cries unless I hold her hand.Any suggestions???

Oh and other sleep deprived souls, I am with you, and I also have a sore throat and feel crap. Hope we all get some magic sleep tonight!

strawberrylace · 27/02/2008 21:57

Hello all
i would just like to say that my DS has also taken to refusing to sleep properly during the day, and also to waking at 4am for a feed!

He used to have a great routine, but he seems to have abandoned it over the last few days. Now during teh day he may nap for a couple of half hours - in the morning and in the afternoon - but otherwise he just refuses to sleep until he flakes out on me about 5pm. So during the day he just naps wherever he happens to be (pushchair if we're out, swing or big bed if we're in, or on the mummy pillow).

I shouldn't complain too much as he goes to sleep easily at night, and even when he wakes up at 4am he goes down again straight after his feed.

Hopefully we'll all get some sleep tonight!

Apricott · 27/02/2008 22:20

Well hello everyone!

It's been ages. I am a bad mn'er, it's official. I'm sorry I'm so crap. It used to be so easy when I went to work and had uninterrupted computer access all day. Now I'm lounging around all day at home I can't seem to get anything done - funny that !

I'm sorry to hear so many of you are still suffering with really broken nights. I can sympathise (through experience with DD), and it really is the pits. I can't offer any tips, I've just been lucky enough to have a baby who likes to sleep this time round. He doesn't generally nap during the day much at all, but he sleeps like a dream child at night (for the time being at least).

We've been on our first long car journey since I was on here last - went to Menston (outside Leeds) to see my sister - a seven hour journey. Huw hates the car. Cries almost every time he goes anywhere. It's got so bad that I try to avoid driving with him at all. Against this background dh suggested trying (horror of horrors to my way of thinking) a dummy - something I just hadn't considered. It worked. It was brilliant. He didn't cry the whole way there.

Since we've been home, I've had a really nasty cold (which everyone else got too), Huw has had conjuntivitis and I then had a horrible tummy thing (pains so strong it was like labour all over again, then sickness too ... so just like labour all over again). Thankfully we're all just about recovered now. Going to keep up H's eye drops for another day just to make sure.

And, what else? dh has applied for a job in Edinburgh - could spell big changes ahead.

dd is ludicrously busy at school doing a hundred and one things for the upcoming national youth eisteddfod, which means we're equally busy, fetching and carrying her from various rehearsals.

I'm learning how to use a good, old-fashioned SLR camera. Have nearly finished my first film, so will get some results soon. Scared they'll all be under or over exposed or out of focus.

Oh, and Huw has worn his first real nappies. I'm going to buy some more so that he can wear them more during the day. I think we'll stick to disposables for the nights though. Big thank you winnie for the liners.

I'll try to catch up and get back into the mn habit. I think of you all often.

Take care,

A x

Mine · 27/02/2008 22:45

Hey Apricot.. you're back.
The dummy was a life saver for us too. People keep telling me that its really bad, and i'll have trouble getting him out of using it when ds is older....... tbh i don;t care. I'd rather tackle that problem when it arises, as long as it gives me some peace now!!

Went to my sister's to eat... or rather watch everyone else eat yummy birthday cake.. you know the ones from M&S with the victoria sponge filling and icing on top. NOT FAIR.

I got her an adult babygrow sleep thing!!! Sounds weird but is actually really cute.. wish i had one for myself for those AF days iykwim .
It looks exactly like the ones for babies....... fleecey and everything. She looked very cute but a twit at the same time!!! 30 going on 3 .

TheLadyEvenstar · 28/02/2008 08:34

lol Mine, i love those sleepsuits , my nan used to by the them every year until i was in my 20's then they stopped selling them round here grrrrrrrrrrrr
