How can the morning feed be fattier first thing if the baby has been feeding every 3 hours? It wont have been in the breast any longer than usual, would it?

I think i will try the dream feed thing next.

I am wondering now tho if i am having supply issues. I have a battle with Ellie to take from the left breast alot of the time and even when she does feed from the left or the right, towards the end of her feed she will pull off, turn away and whinge but then turn back for another quick suck and do the same. The only thing that stops it is if i give her a dummy so maybe she just wants to comfort suck? I am concerned as to why she wont take a feed (or very reluctantly) from the left side tho. I know it's never been her favourite side but she would always feed from it, regardless.

Also, with regard to pumping, does it matter if i pump before i give her a feed or should i pump AFTER i've fed her? I really want to get at least another couple of ounces out before my trip to the office tomorrow as i dont want to BF while i'm there if i can help it, even though there will no doubt be a spare office availble......

Rg- on kellymom it says that the fuller the breast the less calorie it contains- so not fattier first thing.

With the Ellie pulling away thing it could be a few things. Either on sed occations she's thirsty not hungry and only wants fore milk hense winging towards end of feed. Or possibly because the consistancy changes she may be wingy because she has to possibly work harder for the milk, not as easily accessable as more watery foremilk. Lots of other possibities here but i think its possibly the change from intial let down. (easy milk!)

With supply- could you have a poor latch on left breast? I think SGK said she had a latch and suply issue with one of her breasts, and the bf consultant sorted it. Is there anyone you could see who could check your latch? And you could get propper advice about the pulling off breast issue.

HTH the link provided has other links to specific info on sed individual possible problems, if that makes sense!

hello everyone

rg - phoebe does that very thing sometimes and i reckon it's when she's tired or her gums are hurting.

just off to catch up, back soon

SparklyGothKat · 03/03/2008 22:45

Callum is also doing the pulling away thing too atm, i think he is teething. he took just 10ml from the bottle tonight. I think he has cotton onto the fact that its EBM in the bottle now and can't be bothered with it when he can get it from me!!

LittleMissBliss · 03/03/2008 22:52

Oh i do it first thing (both breasts) then put it in the fridge then have another go about an hour or so later, adding to the milk (but you may want to let it come to near room temp before you add). Sometimes sooner or later depending on when i need the milk. I sometimes do it before a feed sometimes after because i never really know when he'll want some. I don't think it matters too much as your breasts are never empty. How long will you be there? Because Coby only takes 3 oz max per EBM feed, breast milk takes around 1.5 hours to digest.

LittleMissBliss · 03/03/2008 22:54

They're clever things! Always after mummies finest!

RGPargy · 03/03/2008 23:20

LMB - Thanx for the info and the link. When she fusses i do tend to wind her and then try her on the other side. Sometimes she'll just cry and pull away and out right refuse to take the other side, other times she'll just suck once and then whinge, which to me indicates that she is full or something. If she's extra hungry or just being normal, she'll take both sides no problem. I think the latch is fine so i dont think that's an issue this time.

Ara - Perhaps it's Ellie's gums hurting too. She's constantly got her fists in her mouth or chewing/sucking something so i'm wondering if perhaps she is teething at the moment.

LMB - Perhaps i'll try expressing before she has her "breakfast" feed. She is normally very good at waiting til i'm sorted with tea and toast before i actually feed her in the mornings. We will probably be out from around 9.30am til hopefully no later than 3.30pm (ish) so if she gets up at, say, 7am, her feed times will then be 10, 1 and 4pm, going on her need 3 hourly feeds. if i try and squeeze her out to four hourly feeds (quite possible as she sleeps alot when we're out) then she'll need a feed at 11am and 3pm, which isn't too bad as i'm sure i could manage one BF while i'm out and we're taking the EBM so that'll be ok too. i could probably get away with feeding her on the train if i can find a quiet seat... When DP fed her on Sunday, he gave her a 5oz bottle, and she drank 4oz of that, which isn't too bad i dont think, although it was first thing in the morning so she could have been extra hungry.

Right, i'm off to bed. N'night all, have a good sleep!

Hi all.

Hope you had lovely mothering sundays. Mine would have been better if William hadn't been poorly - we had to call the doctor out on sat evening as he wasn't keeping any feeds down and was dehydrated. Anyway, he's back to his cheery self now, and we were able to go out for lunch with my mum. My bro and sis also came, which was a surprise for my mum, and really made her day.

Brighton was brilliant, though the weather was a bit rubbish.

jojomamanbebe do doidy cups, if you order online you get 10% discount from mumsnet and it's free delivery!!

LizzieO · 05/03/2008 14:05

Hi all

hope your all having good days

Well Ollie weighs in at 13lb 6oz at 17 weeks, we moved him into his own room on Sat, and he seems to like it, he has now been sleeping thru from last feed at 10.30 ish until around 4ish and then again till 7.00ish, don't know whether thats cos he's in his own room, and altho' its just next door and i can still hear him quite clearly i don't feel i need to jump up and get him if he starts fussing, or whether feeding him the baby porridge is helping, or whether he was just going thru growth spurt and waking loads, or whether he was just gonna sleep more in his own sweet time. Anyway i'm not counting my chicken cos i know it can all change at the drop of a hat

IKWYM about FF babies tho' almost all the FF babies i know were sleeping thru a long time ago. anyway why am i still knackered

Loopmumsy - well done for getting the little poppet off to sleep in her cot

Jet girl - sorry to hear that William was poorly, that must have beenb scary so i'm glad he's better now, what was it do you think ?

RG - i wanna see ya braids

hello everyone else
Lxxx

sarahloumadam · 05/03/2008 20:44

Hi all hope you are all well. Sounds like you've got a good thing going there Lizzie! Glad William is better now Jet, must have been a worrying night for you.

Went to an info session on weaning today and it seems like a complete faff and I am feeling a bit anxious about it all (pathetic I know!). Will check out your info on BLW (now I know what it means!) Berry, thanks. For some reason I thought that at 6 months I would be able to give Adam milk in a sippy cup but the HV seemed to be saying not and I'm not sure why and I was too to ask and show myself up. Anyone know why you can't give milk in a beaker? DS still a bottle-shirker.

Have a good evening - off to watch Damages x

RGPargy · 05/03/2008 21:32

Loopy - hoorah for DD sleeping in her cot!

Jet - Hope William is feeling better now, poor little mite.

Lizzie - Well done on getting Ollie to sleep that long! Mind you, saying that, I think Ellie does sleep for that long too, only at different times. Tonight she was knackered and went to bed at 7.30 so no doubt she will be awake at 2 or 3am for a feed.

The braids pic is coming! I promise! I'll stick one on tomoz - no matter what!

Sarah - I dont see any reason why Adam cant use a cup at 6 months (not that i'm an expert or anything). I want Ellie to get onto a doidy cup asap but as she's breastfed i'm not sure quite how i'm going to do it, other than expressing her feeds 24/7. I plan to stop at 6 months anyway so maybe i could just try it then.

I know people say that BF is easy, and it is for the middle of the night and early morning feeds etc, but I went to london yesterday for the obligatory baby in the office show round and i took a "packed lunch" for Ellie (that's EBM to you and me ) as i didn't want to BF in front of my work mates. Anyway, it was lovely to have the freedom to feed wherever i liked and not feel conscious about it. I really wish i didn't give a monkeys about BF in public but i just cant do it, even after 13 weeks!

Oh and i deffo see a difference in expressing in the morning to the evening! Yesterday morning before i went i thought i'd have a quick pump to add to Ellie's EBM in case she didn't have enough and in about 5-7 minutes i'd got 3oz out of one boob!! I wanted to express again this morning but DS was around and by the time i got round to doing it, it was about 1ish and i couldn't get a drop out! Just goes to show! lol.

Nothing to report here today. had a lovely chilled day at home. MIL is coming round tomorrow for Nannacuds and DP is working away from tomorrow til Saturday night. Other than that, all quiet in RG Manor!

Have a good night all.

We've had HV for 4 month check today. All went well and Coby did a great job of weeing on the scales!

Lizzie- glad all is well now, must have shaken you up abbit.

Sarah- maybe the beaker thing was something to do with beakers being not so great for teeth so i've heard. (breast milk is high in sugar). You could use a doidy cup! But guess its fine to put water in beaker not that bf babies need any water untill they finish weaning.

Jet- thankyou i haven't ordered mine yet but will do now especially if i get 10% off and free delivery. p&p always really anoys me [tight arse] especially if the item your buying is only a few quid and but costs the same in p&p. phew rant over.

RG- know what you mean about the bottle thing. It was great when we were out for our meal. But i'd miss the closeness ans bonding that comes with bfing if i did it all the time. But i am a bit of a fanatic

last jabs tommorrow, poor ds.

Hi everyone!

Not been on for a while. Thought I'd finally get around to posting today.

Life has been busy as usual. Had some work done on the living room so we've been living in the dining room for a couple of weeks. was getting a bit cramped in there but lovely LOM brought me some flowers which cheered the place right up

Went to London for a visit to catch up with all the friends we left behind when we moved up to Leeds. Was so lovely to catch up with everyone and DS had a great time. Sara was a breeze - I hardly felt like we had an extra person with us.

She is fully on formula now by the way. I phased breastfeeding out over a period of 2 weeks. She seems happy and I'm a lot more relaxed.

Going to an asian bridal show this weekend. Because I advertise with one of the sponsers, I got invites to the after party. I haven't been to an after party in my life. It's jolly exciting he he

Tried on loads of clothes yesterday but nothing fits around the bust. I think I'll need to take something out at the bust because I haven't got the time or money to buy something new.

I'm off to feed Sara now and then will sit down with a coffee and catch up on the thread so I can respond to all the latest happenings.

P.S. Is anyone else traumatised after watching whistleblower on nurseries last night!!!

sarahloumadam · 06/03/2008 13:33

Didn't see that programme Charming, my mum did and she is having kittens about her precious DGS now! Glad the bottle feeding is going well and little Sara is thriving.

Thanks for the link Loopy! I haven't minded not having a night out in the slightest but at the back of my mind, at 6 months I was going to be able to hand Adam over to the MIL with a cup of my finest expressed and go and let my hair down. When the HV implied that I still had to try and get him onto a bottle I was gutted.

Speak later x

RGPargy · 06/03/2008 20:05

Evening all!

LMB - I was having a think about FF and when i thought about it long and hard, i could find no excuse to switch to FF at all really. My milk supply is plentiful and DD is gaining weight so really it's just my modesty i'm worried about. With that in mind, if i want to feed DD with a bottle when i'm out then i can express a bottle's worth or two and Bob's your uncle. If i were struggling with BF it would be a different matter, but i'm not so i'll carry on with it i reckon!

Charming - Please dont tell me you were in London on Tuesday because that's when i was in London visiting the office! Glad your visit went well for you! Glad Sara is thriving too - it makes all the difference doesn't it?!

Sarah - why does the HV want you to still get Adam onto a bottle? I thought the idea with the doidy cup was that you can go straight from breast to cup??!

No news here either today. Going to take DD off to get weighed tomorrow and hopefully (finally) get the cat to the vets. Wow, i live such a wild life these days!

OP posts:
sarahloumadam · 06/03/2008 21:09

RG - she implied that feeding with a bottle was somehow preferable to feeding with a cup, think the implication was that I wouldn't be able to get so much down with a cup? Should have just asked what she meant but you know how it is when you don't want to make a fool of yourself, I always ask daft questions! What was it like seeing all your work colleagues? Good luck at the vets.

RGPargy · 06/03/2008 22:27

Oh right! How do YOU feel about using a cup? if you want to use one, just use one! Obviously Adam will let you know if he's hungry!

it was great seeing my work mates again but it felt weird too, like i didn't work there any more lol.

Hopefully the vets wont cost too much ££.

Hi all I took DD to my mums work today and she weighed her and she is 5.34kgs or 11 lb 6 oz. Shes 15 weeks now so quite small but still growing. I went to my friends last night for a few catch up drinkies and had to come home as DD was screaming and had taken all the express milk I left and needed me luckily it was just a block away so I went back after she was alseep. Me and DH haven't been able to use the free babysitting service of my folks yet becuase DD seems to be having trouble settling at night (Teething?? Growth spurt?? Jet lag??? ) Never mind lovely warm weather here. We are taking DD swimming for the first time on sunday and are very excited.

RGPargy · 07/03/2008 09:15

morning everyone!

I'm taking DD to get weighed today. At 10 weeks she was 10lb 15oz and now she's 13 weeks it'll be interesting to see how much she weighs.

Fiona - sounds like our DDs are following the same route, weight-wise. Everyone keeps telling me how small she is (which makes me paranoid) but perhaps she's just long and dense lol.

Hope she settles soon and you get to use your free babysitting service!!

OP posts:
sarahloumadam · 07/03/2008 10:00

RG - true I worry waaay too much, ridiculous, when Adam had a bit of dry skin I had visions of him living in a bubble for the rest of his life to ward off dust-mites [saddo emoticon]. Got to get a grip.

Fiona is very wet and windy here, how gorgeous to have nice weather, be interesting to see how your swim goes, keep meaning to take DS.

Had some v.sad news, I hesitate to talk about it here but my beautician who was pregnant at the same time as me has lost her baby at 9 months . Can't imagine anything worse, she was so excited and happy (not that anyone isn't excited and happy but ykwim).

Have a lovely day with your LOs

ThisCharmingMum · 07/03/2008 10:11

oh my gosh sarah - what happened?

I feel so awful for her - what a tragedy
