Florence - BCG is for TB which is not a universal jab but is needed in the sort of area I live in where TB is on the increase. Nice.

Toots - hurrah to dd2's weight gain. I know there is a "range' of normal, but it's hard when your little one registers towards one end or the other. You keep doing what you are doing, and a big Jerry Springer style "whatever" to anyone who tells you different.

Thanks for the good wishes, feel very touched, as always. Bean wasn't even up for ginger placing in cot last night so decided to spend the evening cuddling him. Bed at 10pm, feed at 2pm and then up at 6am, so again, a good night for this stage of things. Have been out today which just helps so much. I had a dread of feeling "stuck" at home. Hurrah for bad medical advice that told me to get out and about asap!

btw - is anyone else watching "Bodies"? Can anyone tell me why I am?!!

huppa · 25/11/2004 19:37

Hi all and welcome to the newbies.

Pleased things are going better today Bean. Getting out really does make a difference. The only problem I find is that somewhere along the way either chocolate, biscuits or cake are involved, so I don´t know how I´m ever going to lose these extra pounds.

DS has only been awake for about 3 hours today. He normally sleeps a lot, but this is ridiculous. I figure he´s either going to be ill or be awake all night - neither of which will be good news.
Mind you despite all his practising he still can´t sleep longer than 3 hours at a stretch at night. I´m beginning to think it will never happen. He´s also developed a really annoying grunting/snoring/snorting noise which means that even when he´s asleep I´m still awake. What makes it worse is that he only makes this noise at night - during the day he sleeps perfectly silently.

Toots - well done on DD´s weght gain.

Bellie · 25/11/2004 19:51

Hello all - glad to hear that most people are having better days today. I have been out for a long walk which dd slept all the way through - I have to say that I am sure that walking (which was recommended after my c-section) is much harder for my stomach muscles to take than driving. But you are right Bean sitting at home can make everything feel so much worse!!

beansprout · 25/11/2004 20:07

I'm the same Bellie - driving is fine but walking - eugh! Hoovering is the worst thing of all, so, best not do that then

Huppa - Bean has an incredible range of snorting/grunting etc. I use one ear plug and keep the other ear to the pillow. This cuts out a lot of the small scale stuff but means I can hear him if I need to. Also, if it goes quiet and I want to check (I know, I know!) then I just lift my head. Big shout to Toots for extolling the virtues of ear plugs in the early days. Means I can sleep while Bean is settling himself, which can still take some (precious sleep) time.

Toots · 25/11/2004 20:52

hello new posters.

Huppa - tell me about it with the chocolate and the biscuits and the cakes! Finished off a bar a friend had bought round thinking 'well that's that for today'. Went out for bracing walk, and stopped to buy a bar of chocolate. What??? Simply couldn't walk another step without it. And Beansprout's right - earplug(s) for you, I'm thinking.

geogteach · 26/11/2004 11:16

Hi all agree getting out is the bees knees, but its not really happening here DD is ill (unheard of!) and I had 2 social engagements arranged for yestaday which I had to cancel, absolutely gutted. So desperate to get out today took DS to preschool by myself with 3 children, now I've phoned my mum to fetch him, I don't find driving, or even walking a problem, but lifting them in and out of the car is the killer, I daren't even try to get the big buggy in the car so that means DS2 in the sling which probably isn't wise either. Can't believe people actually choose to have sections!
Now i've got that off my chest my wound is infected and i've got piles is it any wonder we need cake.

Toots · 26/11/2004 14:30

Geogteach sorry you and dd are poorly.

Bellie · 26/11/2004 15:46

Oh Geogteach - sorry that your dd is not well and that you are not feeling great. I agree I am not sure why anyone chooses to go through the pain of a c-section - but each to their own!

My washing machine has broken down today - not in floods or anything but just gets stuck on the rinse cycle and bangs alot!! Means no ironing though - however hope it gets fixed soon - dd will run out of clothes at some point!!

beansprout · 26/11/2004 18:36

Geogteach - hope you and dd feel better and are able to get out soon.

florenceuk · 26/11/2004 19:24

Geogteach - that sounds very painful. Piles AND an infected wound? Ouch. Have to admit that on the days I don't have DS it is actually bliss to not have to go anywhere but sit in front of the TV BF DD on demand and not worry about whether she will wake up in time to fit in feed before we have to go pick up DS. However daytime TV is actually crap (although I've developed a liking for richard and Judy), so I've gone and bought a few books. Toots, are you reading the Redmond O'Hanlon book? I stopped reading that as the habit of writing! all! the dialogue! in exclamation marks! got on my nerves. Have bought Frankie and Stankie, that Andrea Levy and a Penelope Lively on a 3 for 2 offer. BTW I forgot to mention I did read your book on the woman who was on ADs and had a baby - it was actually very well written if slightly depressing.

Anyway, today DD screamed on and off from 12 to 6pm today with occasional cat naps and a brief period of calm, finally conked out in the sling. Now asleep without having had her 5pm feed (or her 7pm one for that matter) so we will see when she wakes up. Thank god it's the weekend!

forgot to add - those Kandoo wipes are actually very nice if your bottom is a bit sore (my stitches are uncomfortably close to you know what)...

geogteach · 26/11/2004 20:35

Thanks for all the sympathy. Just found out can't go to one of the christmas do's i'm invited too because the venue won't allow DB and I can't leave him!
Huppa how is your DB, mine has slept nearly all day today and so now i'm worried he has what DD has. Other prob as he hasn't fed that much i'm engorged and leaking milk everywhere, maybe its just as well I can't go out, not sure its a very pretty sight at the moment!

huppa · 27/11/2004 10:45

Geogteach - sounds like you´re having a pretty bad time of it at the moment. DS is fine - slept a lot again yesterday and is still sleeping at night. Mind you DD has an awful cold, so I´m still expecting DS to come down with that soon. Hope things improve for you soon.

Thanks for all the advice about earplugs. Think I´ll give it a go tonight. Although DS is sleeping well, the constant grunting and snuffling is driving me insane.

Hope everyone has a good weekend and that you´ve better weather than we´ve got here.

geogteach · 27/11/2004 14:58

Well DB is definately all bunged up, screamed loads last night which although i'm used to him being up he is not usually a screamer, seems to be sleeping lots today again but so is his sister. Hopefully DS1 will avoid it. Have at least been out today to see father christmas arrive in his helicopter!

Bellie · 27/11/2004 17:57

geogteach - glad to hear that at least you have managed to get out and that you and dd are feeling better.
Had a good day today - even though we started by having to buy a new washing machine but the good news is that it willbe delivered on Monday! DD has slept for 4 hours between feeds which has been great although i think we will therefore suffer tonight!

Turtle35 · 28/11/2004 17:40

have been trying to catch up on everyone's news but it would take ages to start from the bottom.

Well who ever thought a newborn baby would take up so much time!! My God I am exhausted, I even had my Mother with me for a couple of weeks helping and I am still tired.

DD is a month old today and I just can't believe how fast the time has gone and what a roller coaster ride it's been. I wanted to log on each day and keep up with the news but when I get some spare time, I have to lye down.

I had an infection down there, bad piles, along with a lot of bleeding and a blocked milk duct that hurt so bad when she would feed that it made my toes curl, so needless to say I have felt like crap for the last month. My back is now giving me gyp again and I so much want to feel normal.

Is anyone still really sore after a month? DD is mainly breast feeding but I do give her a top up at night cause my supply is low, I am trying every thing I can to increase milk supply as it seems so much easier for DD to digest. She does get bad wind after formula.

How does the fenugreek tea work?

Does anyone know how to cure a blocked milk duct? my GP was very relaxed saying to "persevere" - easier said than done.

Hope everyone is well and getting some sleep?

Toots · 28/11/2004 19:33

Turtle you poor thing, sounds like you're having it tough. I drink fennel tea and take fenugreek supplement by solgar. I think it's normal for your supply to be lower at the end of the day, but apparently that milk has more fat, so less goes further iyswim. The blocked duct sounds awful, all I can say is massage your breast down to the nipple and put hot flannels on in the bath, but hopefully someone else will have advice too.

Toots · 28/11/2004 20:09

BTW who else for the meet up next week????

Florence - yes it is the Redmond O'Hanlan 'Big Style!' I keep thinking it will settle into something else, but it doesn't seem too. Not sure I'm going to get to the end either tbh.

Turtle35 · 28/11/2004 21:11

I am keen to meet up. Can anyone tell me where and when? I am dying to meet all of you and see the little ones in person.

Bellie · 29/11/2004 10:05

Hello - oh Turtle sounds like you have been in the wars! Hope things are getting better for you now. I think as Toots says to help with the blocked duct massage and hot flannels are the order of the day although I have also heard of cabbage leaves working well (no personal experience though).

I also cannot believe how much time a baby takes up - dh gets home from work and asks what have you done today - and the answer is fed, expressed, eat lunch (ususally about 4pm) fed, expressed, got dressed, fed, expressed!! I am also like you and when I get the chance have a lie down - and then feel guilty for not doing all the other stuff.

The meet-up is at Geogteach's near Redhill on 7th - there is a thread in the meet-ups which probably has more details than I can remember here- HTH.

Hope to see you there!

Toots · 29/11/2004 13:01

db fed at around 7,9,11,1.30,3.30 and 5.30 last night then we had a whole two hours of sleep- whoopee. My eyeballs are swivelling in their sockets .

it's a phase. i mustn't sweat the small stuff. hmmmmmmmm.

florenceuk · 29/11/2004 13:51

Toots - must be something in the air? DD fed at 5pm, 6, 8.30, 11, 1.30, 4.30 and 7! However has slept from 9.30 to 11.30 this morning...

geogteach · 29/11/2004 14:39

Am I the only one who hasn't got a clue on the times they got woken up? Beent o the hospital today (whats new?) DS2 has been discharged, the lump in his arm is apparently fat! He now has a disgusting cold courtesy of DD, does make him quite sleepy though!

Turtle35 · 29/11/2004 15:24

Geogteach, are you OK to have another Moose around with tiny baby? What can I bring etc? Shall I log onto the meet up thread? Without sounding like a totally paranoid new Mother (which I am) if your kids have bad colds will they pass them on to the others?

I find it almost impossible to keep track of DD feeding schedule, although I do know some nights it's 3 hours and I have had one night of a 5 hour strech, I thought something must of been wrong with her - of course she was fine.

I now have her sleeping in her cot during the day for naps after much coaxing and the new Phillips Dream Theatre so she gets used to waking up in there, she looks so tiny in her big cot and she is a wopping 10 pounds at one month old. Off to do my fourth load of laundry today.

Turtle35 · 29/11/2004 15:26

By the way sorry to hear about DS2, you must have amazing energy.
