@AdventuresAwait that surprised me too! The benefits do outweigh the jaundice though so if exclusively breastfeeding best to stick with it as it will eventually flush out of baby's system.

They just go off of symptoms so if there is still yellowing of skin, eyes, gums etc at the two week point they refer to the hospital for blood test. Not sure why they don't use the at home test as I see a lot of trusts use that now. X

Noodles4Me · 01/10/2021 17:12

My boy is now 6 weeks old. He now won't sleep. Not at night, not during the day....Sad He is not necessarily crying but God, why won't he sleep? Hope this is a phase, and a not long lasting one at that, I am shattered!

FTEngineerM · 01/10/2021 19:36

Could be a leap @Noodles4Me iirc you had him before the due date? There is a leap at 8 weeks.

Our first was spot on with them, yet to know about this one because he’s only a week old 🥲 I hope it’s the same though it’s so much less stressful when I can see on a calendar when the fussiness/sleep deprivation will kick in

Hi mamas. Has anyone moved onto formula feeding from breast/combi ? My little on is so fussy at the boob and it’s affecting his sleep. I had planned on combi feeding snd have done so up to now with 1-2 bottles of formula in the evenings but the last two nights he’s refusing boob and starts screaming and fussing :( then he ends up awake for 2-3 hours and won’t get back to sleep. Can’t figure out if it’s because he prefers bottle or what the problem is. I exclusively breastfed my older two till past one year with no issues so I’m clueless in the combi feeding route. I didn’t plan on feeding him exclusively for as long anyway but don’t want to give up just yet. Any advice?

FTEngineerM · 02/10/2021 06:30

@Mamabearwhere have you looked at/seen how to do paced bottle feeding? Our DS1 used to hate my boob after having a bottle of expressed of MIL because she’d use a fast flow teat and chuck 5oz in the bottle, he’d down it before he realised he was full and then expected that next time. My boobs just couldn’t compare. Then we told her to do paced feeding and put 2oz in and make up more if required and it worked perfectly. He could then switch between breast and bottle ok.

@Mamabearwhere I'm in the process of transitioning from combi feeding to formula only. Our little one has never really taken to the boob and would get so stressed out, she has definitely developed a preference for the bottle but I had to give her a bottle in the beginning to help flush out jaundice. I have been expressing throughout the day and giving a few bottles of breastmilk and the rest formula. Have you tried to express? I also have a hakaa to catch let down and that is amazing! You get so much throughout the day. If you don't want to give up breastfeeding just yet it may be worth trying. We have been using the paced method as mentioned above.

@Noodles4Me I hope your little one has been sleeping more since yesterday? You must be exhausted X

Kirky658 · 02/10/2021 17:37

@adventuresawait Alice had jaundice for 3 weeks so can answer any questions you have. But breastfeeding plenty is the best as others have said, it flushes the bilirubin out in their poo.

Sophieandtiger · 02/10/2021 17:51

Hi all just wondering if anyone else has a baby who sleeps all day? Starting to wonder if it's normal at 12 days old. Today she's slept more than ever I wake her for feeds and she nods off again after 30-45 minutes. Occasionally she's so sleepy it takes ages to get her to have a full feed. I don't think she's unwell and has plenty of wet and dirty nappies but my first was certainly never like this so it's a bit of a worry! At night she sleeps pretty well too though last night was mostly awake after 4am, maybe she is making up for that lost sleep?

She did have a growth spurt in the last couple of days with some cluster feeding if that is relevant. Do they sleep a lot during/after growth spurts?

AdventuresAwait · 02/10/2021 19:32

Thanks @Kirky658. Hettie had it a few weeks ago but it has fully cleared up without treatment. I was just sharing my experience with @MrsTD88 who was asking about it 😊 xx

Jary6 · 02/10/2021 20:04

@Sophieandtiger I'm in the same position as you. My little one is 9 days old and sleeps all day and all night. He feeds every 2-3 hours throughout and is maybe awake for 1.5 hrs over 24 hrs because of nappy changes and bath/trying to keep him awake.

My daughter who's now nearly 2 was completely different and was awake through the night from day 1 and was quite stressful.

I don't mind him sleeping but I do worry all day that the awake night might come which I would like to avoid. Can't complain I guess as at least I get 2 hr sleep stints. I'm co-sleeping with him most of the night too which may be why he sleeps at night as he lasts closer to 3 hours then, if I put him down he wakes after an hour so think he wants the comfort.

Mamabearwhere · 02/10/2021 20:39

@Sophieandtiger mine is similar. He’s almost 3 weeks old snd sleeps all day long. Today for example he’s hardy drank much milk because every time he latches on he goes back to sleep within a few minutes. I try everything To keep him awake. At night he wakes for feeds every 1.5/2 hours but again, doesn’t really drink much. He latches well but doesn’t really suck and just falls asleep.

Kirky658 · 02/10/2021 20:40

@adventuresawait my apologies @mrstd88 that's what I get for skim reading while sleep deprived 🤣

Mamabearwhere · 02/10/2021 20:42

That being said he’s got plenty of wet nappies so I guess he’s taking what he needs

AdventuresAwait · 02/10/2021 21:12

No worries @Kirky658! Totally understand 😄 xx

Kirky658 · 02/10/2021 21:18

@mamabearwhere @sophieandtiger when Alice was a couple of weeks old she drank very little and slept sooooo much often falling asleep mid feed. She's much better now and stays awake for longer periods. The nurses in NICU told us as long as she has plenty of wet and dirty nappies and is putting weight on you're fine xx

MrsTD88 · 02/10/2021 21:29

@Kirky658 so easily done! Thank you 😊

Noodles4Me · 02/10/2021 22:34

@FTEngineerM he was born at 39 weeks, so not much in advance of due date, must be a phase.

@MrsTD88 he still wants to be awake all day, but weekends are not too bad as DH takes him at 6am so I can sleep until 10!! Bliss

Sophieandtiger · 02/10/2021 23:23

Thank you @Jary6 @Mamabearwhere @Kirky658 it's so good to know it can be normal, I'll try to enjoy the peace for now instead of worrying too much! Dd had a bit of jaundice at day 5 and was told to feed her plenty so it's so stressful when she can't be woken for it!

Like you @jary6 I'm also a bit worried that unless I manage to increase awake time in the day she'll soon be up all night but right now it's just impossible to keep her awake when she's decided to sleep...

@mamabearwhere yes actually I do have this at night too sometimes, she latches on but starts falling asleep again after a few sips. I was even starting to question whether I had supply issues and that's why she was losing interest but I think she's just a super sleepy baby.

Hoping for a sleepy night for us all!

MrsTD88 · 03/10/2021 13:34

@Noodles4Me our girl is the opposite and awake most of the night. She can be so fussy at night. Exhausted today 😴

Scotti84 · 03/10/2021 13:55

Lillys was a nightmare last night, would not sleep, just kept crying for food. She drank 2x4 oz that I'd expressed, then I put her on the boob to see if she'd fall asleep after, which she didn't, DH took her and gave her the last 2oz expressed milk and that finally got her off to sleep at about 2am, she slept til 6, i changed and fed her and then she was out 8-11. I hate sleeping so long but we were both knackered and she was too. Its almost like sometimes she can't choose between wanting to sleep or wanting to eat and the crying tires her out too. Love her her bits, but i will be a much nicer person when she starts sleeping longer. I am a cranky bitch when I'm tired. I'm first to admit it.

FTEngineerM · 03/10/2021 17:06

Me too @Scotti84 me too 😩
The worse is when my eyeballs hurt I’m so tired, then the world can look out.

@Jary6 I read that you’re cosleeping… have you got your little one in bed with you? I co sleep most of the time but worry so much with what I read online…(really should have learnt not to google so much).

CherLW · 03/10/2021 21:55

Is anyone exclusively BF? I have been since day one and he’s now 5+3. I worry that it’s not enough for him… last night he woke pretty much every 2 hours for a feed when usually it’s about 3-3.5 hours inbetween.

I was thinking of giving him formula for his before bed feed and then BF through the night. Does anyone do that? Is it a thing? I don’t k is how much breast milk he has so how would I know how much formula to give? Any help will be great! 🙈 xx

Bubbles1st · 03/10/2021 22:29

@CherLW 2 hours is still perfectly normal for such a young baby, especially during a growth spurt which is likely as he heads towards 6weeks.

I breastfeed and sometimes offer formula before bed depending on how I 'think' he is going to be. So as he was awake from 5pm and still awake at 8pm he had a full formula feed, all he did was power nap for an hour and is now on my boob again.

He might sleep better when he finally goes to sleep but realistically he is more likely is just going to spit up more and moan about his tummy and needing a poop as he has been greedy...

It's worth a try but I wouldn't try it based on being worried you're not giving him enough especially of his weight gain is ok.
