Hello All
I'm Emma 25, first time mum to 13wk baby.I need help in encouraging nite sleeping.
Anyone else got a big baby weighed in today at 15lb 12oz!!!

harrogatemum · 17/02/2005 15:30

Hi Emma - is your baby in a routine (dont mean rigid Gina Ford type) but does he feed/nap/bath at roughly the same times every day? Mine have got better at sleeping at night since they got into a routine.

stewarty · 17/02/2005 19:45

My little boy is now 15 weeks and since we put him into his big bed he is sleeping great,He goes down about 8.30pm and sleeps till 7am.We are kind of sticking to a routine and try to do his bed time feed around 7.30/8ish as he gets vv grumpy if any later. We follow same bedtime routine every night .10mins playing on mat naked then into his bath,we play soft music and dim the lights ,and touch wood it seems to work!!!

harrogatemum · 18/02/2005 18:09

hey stewarty - how much does your baby weigh? just interests me if there is a link between weight and sleeping through the night.

stewarty · 18/02/2005 19:47

Well Harrogate mum my ds was 5 weeks early so is only classed as 10 weeks old in real time .He was 5lb 3oz when we got him home and he is now a sniff off 13lbs!!!Last week he was really puddling with his feeds and I was worried his weight gain would be poor, but this was the first week of sleeping right through and he put on 1lb comparitive to the week before when he fed more but slept less, and only put on 1/2 lb.Maybe a connection!!!

harrogatemum · 18/02/2005 21:14

hmmm my twins were 5lb 15 oz but are now about 12lb and 14 weeks old....fingers crossed we are close to the sleeping through!

stewarty · 19/02/2005 09:43

Well done on coping with twins!!!!We are struggling at times coping with one v. colicky baby, but weirdly enough he does still sleep all night

Riebee · 20/02/2005 17:41

Hello all. well back from sunny Orlando.
We had a fantastic time. DS3 was so good on the plane, he just fed and slept his way there and back.
His routine was shot to pieces while we were away but hopefully things returning to normal ...apart from night-time he's gone to feeding every two hours again which is not good for my sanity.
I had him weighed before we went and the little porker was 17lbs!! the average size of a 6mth old
Have got him on solids twice a day now and he loves it. new flavour today was banana for brekkie and carrot for dinner, hoping he is going to be one of these babies that eats anything...will make up for the none sleeping
The baby cook food processor I was on about the other week is great, steams and purees the food all in about 15mins better than pushing things through the sieve.
Hope everyone is doing well, haven't had chanch to read all the posts but can see we have a few more names than before so a big hello to anyone new.

Welcome home Riebee. Glad you had a good time.

We are nowhere near to sleeping through and I dont know where I am going wrong. As neither DH or I are working ATM as the restaurant is so quiet, we dont mind too much but I should sort myself out.

Who's baby is sleeping through? Webmum?? Could you write me out a full 24 itinerary of you and your baby's routine and I will try and follow. I am BFing but happy to express for DH to feed too. Am not starting solids for a while yet. Cannot remember how old ds is (he was born on 16 Nov) TIA

eidsvold · 21/02/2005 21:30

collission - dd2 is sleeping from about 7 or 8ish when she falls asleep - stirs slightly for feed when we go to bed - anytime between 9.30 and 10.30 and then sleeps through until 5.30 - 6.30.( depends on whether it is a 9.30pm feed or a 10.30pm feed)

dd2 was born 15 nov and is now 14 weeks old - so your ds is 14 weeks old.....

Riebee · 21/02/2005 22:14

Is mine the only baby who's totally crap at sleeping? He was so restless last night I spent most of the night patting him to get him to settle. He seems to got in the habit of waking every couple of hours and I can't let him cry as he will wake my other two and they have got to get up for school. It's almost as bad as when he was first born. I am soo tired It's lucky he's a little cutie. I would kill for a few hours continous sleep,I'm not asking for a whole night just 4 hours would be nice!!

hello collision

no she doesn't really sleep through, she has occasionally but its all over the place still.

anyway, our day starts between 8 and 9 (it should be earlier but if dd1 sleeps I don't ahve the strength to get up...), and I try to get her to have a nap midmorning of about an hour, she then goes down for her afternoon nap at about 12-13 and sleeps for 2- 2,30 hours. After that sometimes she has another short nap but I try not to amke her sleep after 5pm, she gets her bath at 6,30-7pm and then I breastfeed her in bed (she's still in oiur bedroom) with low lights and then I put her in her carrycot. After that, it's anyojne's guess, sometimes she wakes at midnight and then she has a longer strecth (5-6 hours), sometimes she has the longer stretch earlier, anyway she tends to sleep from 8 till 9ish, but she has at least 2 feeds in between (sometimes 3).
Must add that dd1 had the flu, and dd2 is not altogether right (funny nappies), so at thye moment the routine is not followed very well. She is fully breastfed, and was doing ok with 4hourly feeds until recently, but last week her weight gain was very poor, so I'm trying to give her milk as much as possible now. Will weigh her again tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

Hope that helps collision, good luck!

Flossam · 22/02/2005 20:53

Ok, Collision, not sure if you want to hear it but here is our routine on a good day! Up ideally between 7-8, sometimes 9 if I can get away with it. DS normally has a nap (in his cot) once or twice for about half an hour a time, depending on what time I got up. He normally has another nap in the afternoon, but again, not after 16.30/5ish.

Bath (which he loves) between 6-6.30. Feed in our bedroom (either breastfeed or bottle of EBM) and story (! - helps keep him awake for longer to feed though). Asleep normally by 7ish, although quite often wakes decideding he hasn't quite finished supper . He is (usually) all settled from 8 onwards. He will normally sleep through then till at least 12.30, although then will wake for feeds about twice more in the night.

I've just brought the Tracey Hogg book to see if I can pick up some tips to get him to go longer in the am hours. Still quite impressed that he is in his cot at all though, so he has earnt some brownie points. Quite miss him really, and if he ends up in with us it is normally me, not him wanting a cuddle . He is so lovely!

He will sit up for a couple of seconds without support before flopping, and his favourite position is standing up and looking down on mummy and daddy!! Not too sure what that says about him! He is starting to notice his legs now too, and tries to roll over in the bath (!) whilest grabbing hold of those. He will still literally try and suck my cheek off given the opportunity, dosen't do it to anyone else though, so at least he has narrowed down now that the food comes from me... he's just not too sure where abouts!

bunny2 · 22/02/2005 21:07

hi everyone - havent been around much lately, too knackered to go online once ds and dd arei n bed! Im impressed at your daytime routines - we dont have one yet. Dd tends to sleep and feed as and when she wants to. A well-meaning friend has suggested I try a strict 4 hourly routine for feeding her but it is just not my style, I prefer to feed on demand. nighttimes are good - bath, feed, cuddle and down in the basket by 8.00pm, then dd sleeps through till around 3 am when she has another feed and goes back to sleep until 7ish (sometimes in our bed, sometimes in her basket). Hopefully she will drop the 3am feed soon and we can get a really good nights sleep.

Has anyone else noticed any patches of eczema? We have and are seeing the gp next week. Ds has had horrific eczema in the past and I am praying dd isnt going to suffer too.

eidsvold · 22/02/2005 21:50

bunny - dd2 had some excema a week or so ago - happened when I dunked her in dd's bath - lots of bubbles, gp said I probably stripped the oils from dd2's skin - usually just bathe her in water and moisturise. I used E-45 on her whenever I changed her nappy and it cleared up in no time. The patches of excema were in the folds of her feet - ankle area.....

Mum2Ela · 22/02/2005 23:04

Hi guys

well I took DS swimming for the first time saturday and he just loved it! Splashing around and kicking his feet, he didn't even mind when I (accidently) dunked him under the water! Am taking him again thursday and it seems to shatter him out and he will sleep a bit more than his usual hour or so a day (half hour in the morning and hakf hour in the afternoon). I know, he doesn't like to sleep much, he is far too nosey looking around and seeing what he might be missing!

bunny2 - DD had excezma as a baby so with DS I tried to avoid all products (eg. baby bath, shampoo, cream etc) until he was 12 weeks and touch wood, he hasn't had any dryness yet.

Well, mines still not sleeping through the night, so really don't think he will now until he is on solids, so not for a while yet!

Can't believe DS is already doing the 'you won't put me in my car seat' thing by arching his back, the monkey! DD used to do this but not until she was very much older and I would bend her in the middle to get her in the seat. Can't exactly do that with a 3.5 mth old!!

Just had a lot of reading to do to catch up on all your news. Jamie was 13 weeks this week ( I think I lose track) and is soo easy compared to ds1. he sleeps from 8.30 ish I wake him for a feed before I go to bed then goes through til 7 7.30ish which is brilliant after two years of no sleep.
Cant believe theyre all growing up so quickly will have to keep up with all your progress more often

Helloooo! DS just rolled over, 3 times! I was so excited! Bless him. he had just had a very fun bath, lots of talking and cooing and splashing.. he sounds like a terradactel (sp? I mean one of those dinasaurs!) at times! Then was moistursing him, put him on his tummy, head up a bit on the duvet, he rolled twice on to his back. Wondered if it was because of the duvet so moved him on to the bed proper, and he did it again! Sooo excited! No-one else here though. So I rang DP, my mum, texted his mum....! He is so sweet!

Riebee · 03/03/2005 20:37

Flossam..thats great ahhh
I'm having a bit of a confidence crisis here. For the last week ds has been waking up every hour on the hour and I have just about reached breaking point. Had a mini breakdown this morning, weeping & wailing.. stopping just short of casting myself on the floor . I bought Gina Ford book yesterday and I'm not sure if reading that has made me feel worse. Anyway started yesterday afternoon with making ds go in his cot awake and settling himself off to sleep rather than falling asleep on the breast. He cried for 30 mins on and off last night and the same again tonight. luckly it's before the other two go to bed but it is still breaking my heart . Having said that last night he went from 7ish til 12ish which is better than every hour, after that he woke at 2, 4, 5 & 6.30. I am hoping tonight will be better. In GF's book she suggested fully waking them at 10.30 to give them a feed......not sure I dare!
Hope everyone is ok.

Riebee,

I'm so sorry for you, surviving with no sleep and 3 kids must be really hard for you!!

I find it uite difficult to wake dd2 up for a feed before I go to bed as well...It kind of goes against my instincts (and I don't do it!!), in other things though I found that following some of the basic principles of GF has helped, ie having regular naps during the day, no naps up to 2 hour (only if dd2 is very tired and very short)before bedtime. I don't botehr with the strict 4hourly feeding time, the only fixed time is bedtime which is 7.30 max 8pm. and I try to wake her up no later than 9! (most days is 8am)

I think loosely applied gf's principles are good and easier to manage, but I also think that not all babies are so easy to adjust to waht you want,. so don't feel bad if it doesn't work, I don't believe for a second that it works for everyone, but I do think that some kind of routine is beneficial for the baby!

Best of luck!!

prueweller · 05/03/2005 20:52

has anyone got any tips on settling lo in to there cot after moses basket lo is 14 weeks and is hard to settle and wakes up more during the night

webmum · 05/03/2005 21:11

prueweller

my dd2 is still in her carrycot, but I put her down for daytime naps in her cot, to get her used to it, also I put her there when I'm tidying up her room, she has a mobile on top of it and will look at it and giggle, so I hope when we move for good her she shouldn't have any problems.

It might be a way of getting yours used to it.

good luck

bunny2 · 05/03/2005 21:19

we have no daytime routine at all but dd wtill goes to bed in her cot at 8pm and sleeps, little treasure. She settled in her cot immediately after being in a Moses basket for the first 12 wks. Prue, is your lo cold? Cots are more draughty than baskets, may be why she is waking.

prueweller · 06/03/2005 06:54

we use a 2tog sleeping bag she seems warm enough her hands sometimes gets cold and i put some mitts on do you think i should use some sheeets and blankets instead of the sleeping bag how else could i keep cot warm thanks for the advise was not sure where to ask this as she was born in nov thought here would be best

PandaBear · 06/03/2005 08:13

Well hi all - not been on in ages as we've had a bit of a nightmare since DD2 was born. We've had a total of 6 colds between the children, sickenss and diarrohea in the adults and then 2 weeks ago DD1 came down with chicken pox. We now wait with baited breath for DD2 to get them - hope she doesn't she's still a bit young, I feel.

Anyway, other than that things are good. DD2 is a good baby and we have her in a routine of sorts. She's started to sleep through now so I'm getting loads of rest. Also now weaning her onto bottles. Feel a bit guilty but, I guess she had a good start anyway.

Riebee - I always wake DD2 for a feed at 10 ish. She is always a bit sleepy through half of it, I then change her nappy which wakes her up a bit and then give her the rest. I put her back in her cot awake, but very sleepy. She seems to settle back ok.

Glad to hear you are all ok and nice to be back on line!!
