Here we go again...

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
nowbringussomeJammypudding · 11/11/2007 20:00

Hi Daisy, sorry to hear about your Mum. I'm sure DS will be able to catch up on a few days school. I'm not normally big on taking children out of school, but I believe there are exceptions. Some things are just important.

DynamiteDaisy · 11/11/2007 20:18

thanks Jammy....I don't like it much either. I had bad asthma when I wa little and used to miss two week blocks two or three times a year, so I know what it's like to play catch-up, but he's a bright wee thing.

We've tried to tell him how poorly Nanna is, and he asked if she was going to die . We said yes, but we don't know when, and we are going to see her to cheer her up as she has been really poorly. He has quite a good understanding of things though, and still remembers my Dad dying two years ago.

Anyway, I'm off to get things organised so we can get on the road as early as possible. I've never done the drive with both DCs before....should be entertaining....not!

I'll log on if I can, but I'll be staying at my mum's so no computer.

Catch you all soon. xx

FairyOnTopOfTheChristmasTree · 11/11/2007 20:41

Hi Daisy, if you're still around. Really to hear your Mum isn't so good. I'm sure seeing you and the DCs will cheer her up.

daisy

Norty I saw on another thread you had donated bone marrow. Was it painful to do? What did it involve for you?

Sputnik · 11/11/2007 21:04

Oh Daisy,
Hope the journey goes ok

DynamiteDaisy · 11/11/2007 21:22

cheers guys....I'll try to check in when I can....or send bumper a text!

Talk to you all soon I hope

foxythesnowman · 11/11/2007 21:28

Will be thinking of you Daisy . Don't worry about taking MRR out of school, he'll be fine.

Look after yourself too. lots of love xxx

nowbringussomeJammypudding · 11/11/2007 21:31

Bumper, are you thinking of donating BM? I'm registered as a potential donor, but really don't know if I could donate by the "extract it out of your hip" (to use laymans terms) method. but would happily donate via the blood method. This is partly due to wimp reasons, but also because of my weight I'd be at increased risk from the anaesthetic you need for the "hip method", and I'm afraid I'm prepared to undergo considerable inconvenience and some discomfort but I'm not prepared to risk my own life.

OP posts:
Isawbumperkissingsantaclaus · 11/11/2007 21:37

I've thought about it jammy. I used to donate blood until the phlebotomist told me not to any more because my veins are tiny and seize up around the "knitting needles" (her words!) they use.

But I'm not sure what it involves. Is it painful?

nowbringussomeJammypudding · 11/11/2007 21:45

Not sure. i gather the "hip method" is, or can be at least, but the "blood method" just involves tapping into veins, same as for blood doning, only you get 2 needles, one for blood going out and one for it going back in - If I recall, they inject you for a few days with stuff to increase levels of the appropriate part of the blood (sorry brain is complete mush tonight and unable to come up with accurate scientific words), then extract that part using a similar process to dialysis (good grief, have racked brain for ages trying to think of that word!)

OP posts:
nowbringussomeJammypudding · 11/11/2007 21:46

I hate needles mind. In all my time working in hospitals I never once managed to watch an injection. But I donate blood when I can now, even though the needles scare me. As long as I can talk inanely to the person doing it to distract me from what they are doing I'm OK.

Taking worn out brain to bed now. Good night.

I'm off too. Night all x

HaveYourselfaNortyLittleXmas · 11/11/2007 22:10

Daisy ..thinking of you....

Bumper...I donated years ago using what Jammy calls the "hip method"....I had a general anaesthetic so didn't feel a thing....had a unit of my own blood taken a week before which was re-transfused back to me. It was fine. I was treated like royalty given a private room etc....Jammy...as long as you are fit for an anaesthetic they're happy...I'm very big and it wasn't a problem.

The patient was mid 30's and dying with leukaemia - had 2 small kids....that's all they would tell me....and he survived about 6 months ....died of a brain haemorrhage...nothing to do with the bone marrow.......stuggled to deal with that as I had no idea who he was....

Mental side was much more difficult to deal with than the physical...although I'd do it again like a shot.....as I would hope someone would for my DH / DD ......

BTW I'm the worlds biggest baby (remember epidural at 1cm and also have such bad veins I can't give blood routinely.

Isawbumperkissingsantaclaus · 11/11/2007 22:20

What's the recovery time? Are there any long term side effects from donating? I think I might get myself on the register?

HaveYourselfaNortyLittleXmas · 11/11/2007 22:26

I was a bit sore for a few days and had a week off work in total (but if now would probably just have a couple of days)...but as Jammy said there is a totally non-invasive method that looks like dialysis but don't know much about it.

No side effects at all - You may be a little anamic which is why they re-transfuse red cells back, but I wasn't and was fine.

IMO everyone should do it...especially the rarer ethnic groups....but that's just my opinion....

TBH the chances of someone donating to an unrelated donor are pretty remote.....its incredibly unusual to be a good match for someone outside of siblings....but every chance is a hope when its your last hope....

deckthehallswithboughsofholly · 11/11/2007 22:28

xxxx daisy . MRR seeing his grandma is much more important than school. I will be thinking of you.

My NY resolution a few years ago was to give blood, but I got pg and then I was bfing for agggges and then I got pg again! I have great veins and am v healthy so really feel that I should. When I stop bfing ds I will and will register for bone marrow. If you can save or improve someone's life it must be worth it.

Email me sputnik. I didn't see your message about the secret santa. I hate not being able to scroll all the way down through a thread and find messages!

Peace and love xx

We're having a sofa day here, DD has been sick (she threw up in the supermarket yesterday) and had fever this morning. So far her breakfast has stayed put so fingers crossed. You know they're pretty poorly when they don't have the energy to bother you......

Isawbumperkissingsantaclaus · 12/11/2007 10:54

Aww sputnik, poor dd. at least in the supermarket you didn't have to clear the vom up! hope she feels better soon.

dd and i are watching Dawson's creek but we are going our for a walk with another mum later.

Fairy I got the pump, thanks so much! Haven't had a chance to try it yet but DD enjoyed eating the jiffy bag. I can see how christmas is going to go...

FairyOnTopOfTheChristmasTree · 12/11/2007 10:58

Glad you got it bumper. Did you see the tiny crack in the funnel. Not sure if it will work or if you will need a new one? If you do then the company number is somehwere in the instruction book and they are very helpful (my first funnel broke too, just after I got it!)

sputnik, sorry to hear DD is unwell , hope she feels better soon.
