Surely no more sickness to be had?! (Or eah'll start spraying the thread with disinfectant!)

OP posts:

S has stopped eating his weetabix for breakfast! he used to eat so much - 7 or 8 cubes + dessert for each meal, but now he is refusing the spoon we are down to half a sandwich for lunch and a bit of veg and meat for tea

Lizzzombie · 12/11/2007 13:22

what can you do?!
When they are hungry they will eat, that what I keep telling myself. You can't force it down them, however much you try to!

bunnyhunny · 12/11/2007 13:27

lizz - you are so right. I was very stressed, as breakfast was the only meal left where he actually ate! I tricked him into eating some of the weetabix (which he usually loves) and he spat it out!! Arrrggghhh!
but he loves egg sandwiches - do you think I can feed him solely on those?

Lizzzombie · 12/11/2007 13:43

I would be careful not to go with the favourite foods constantly as I reckon that could cause major fussy eating later on. DJ will scoff down spaghetti bolognaise from boots jar no problem, but I dont feed it to him unless we are out & I need him to eat something with no fuss etc. If you know what I mean?
So, I think I will just persevere, and keep chucking out food he spits out (not eating the left overs myself!), Then, eventually, he will twig that the reason he is hungry is his own fault.
I am toying with the idea of not offering pudding if he hasnt eaten his mains, but I think he maybe too young to understand that one yet. Plus, I want him to eat something!

Lizzzombie · 12/11/2007 13:44
  • do you ever yearn to just open a beer whilst you are feeding him though? To help you get through it? I swear, if I didnt have to do bath and bed time on my own each night, It would be a regular occurance!
bunnyhunny · 12/11/2007 13:51

I know what you mean about the favourite food thing. But I am really getting stuck at the mo - tuna / avocado / egg / ham sandwiches, potatoes in any form, bread in any form, sweetcorn and fruit is all I can get him to eat at the mo!

And loving the idea of beer with feeding times! That would make the HOUR of mess-making and throwing my lovingly-prepared foods at the dog much easier to bear.

Lizzzombie · 12/11/2007 13:55

Thats a veritble feast compared to what DJ will eat! He managed 3 mouthfuls of scrambled egg and about 2 tiny squares of marmite on toast for lunch!
If he is like this at dinner time soon, I swear, I'm having a beer to cope with it!

bunnyhunny · 12/11/2007 14:06

he doesnt eat it all at once if only!

for lunch he had 3 raisins and 3 fingers of bread with egg-mayo on (was quite pleased with the 3 fingers of egg sarnie). breakfast was a slice of pear and maybe half a spoon of weetabix that didnt get spat out. lunch last night was 1 finger of bread with tuna and a new potato. I think teething plays a part in his refusing food too though - thing is, teething seems to be almost constant at the mo.

I remember the days of spoonfeeding when he took a whole jar in a meal.. AND ate dessert!

I just worry that he isn't eating enough, but as you said, if he's hungry he will eat. Also, I think he will get better at feeding himself and so eat more.

will be thinking of you at 5, possibly beer in hand..

bunnyhunny · 12/11/2007 14:07

oh, and do you give him the whole egg scrambled, or just the yolk? been reading about allergies and wondering whether to give him egg-white too.

bunnyhunny · 12/11/2007 14:13

just re-read my post. I think I sounded a bit competitive-mum-syndrome - my baby eats less than yours etc.
i didn't mean to come across like that, I'm just REALLY frustrated!

Lizzzombie · 12/11/2007 14:19

ROFL hehehe!
My baby eats less than yours...my baby is sooooooo skinny you could thread him on a needle!
What he eats wouldn't fill a lady birds' tummy etc etc!

Sorry. No, I dont get competetive mum syndrome (yet!) so didnt take it that way at all! Its just nice to know that my baby is not the only one who is borderline anorexic!

I think teething is a big factor. He has 2 bottom ones coming through at the moment and spent most of the weekend grizzling around.

Question: When other peoples' babies have cut teeth, do their gums bleed? Is this normal? I couldn't work out where the blood was coming from until I realised it must be the gums as there was more tooth showing than there had been earlier on.

2Happy · 12/11/2007 14:49

Bunnyhunny - I remember vivdly ds1 going from muching anything and everything you put in front of him, to suddenly eating less than would keep a medium-sized fly alive. I was starting to tear my hair out - worried it wasn't enough to keep him alive, irritated at constant rejection of my cooking (don't say it...), worried in case he turned into a faddy eater.

Then I posted about it on his post-natal thread on MN, and guess what? The majority of them were doing exactly the same. IIRC he was under a year old - maybe 10 or 11 months old? So you may well find we all start posting soon that our previously good eaters are refusing to eat. And for ds1 from that time on, he'd follow patterns - eat lots for a few days, eat very little for a few weeks, eat lots, eat nothing. Don't stress it. If he's hungry, he'll eat (says she who used to get her knickers in one hell of a knot over ds1's food refusal! Ah the smugness of a second-time mum !) Definitely go with Lizz's advice not to only give him what he fancies to avoid faddishness (is that a word?!).

Well, we've done soft play, sticky eyes and all . No one said anything to my face, anyway! The next challenge is trying to get us all up and out the door by 7.30 tomorrow morning - chances of not being late for work?? Slim!

Lizz - ds1's gums bled when he cut one of his molars, I don't think it's desperately unusual.

Shimmer · 12/11/2007 15:09

afternoon all. Freddie's sleeping and i'm watching tv and eating maltesers, so feeling

Sorry to hear about feeding problems Lizz and Hunny. Can't help really as F is another one who scoffs pretty much anything i give him in 10 seconds flat. But here are my thought anyway...

Hunny do you not do any spoon feeding? I would say to get him to eat more try and get him to make friends with his spoon ( )F started off doing lots of self-feeding but we are actually doing more spoon feeding these days as F eats more and has proper meals - pies, cassoroles etc. F likes to have his own spoon to hold on to during mealtimes and sometimes tries to put it in his bowl and get the food out himself(which he obviously can't do and makes a huge mess but at least he's learning vaguely what a spoon is for). I use the whole egg when i make scrambled egg for F.

Lizz it sounds like DJ is having quite a lot of milk. like you said, if you drop that 10am feed he'd be bound to (eventually...) eat more at lunch.

Nemo2007 · 12/11/2007 15:27

Another one here who doesnt eat much but both ds and dd1 were/are the same. Chloe has never been spoon fed as she wouldnt entertain it at all. So its blw or nothing here..lol

2Happy · 12/11/2007 15:47

Aha - I have discovered the cause of ds2's scratting last night/today. It's not the conjunctivitis. It appears to be top teeth. Great, dh misses out on the sleepless teething nights

bunnyhunny · 12/11/2007 17:27

aaarrrggggghhhhh
so I offered him veg and these sausage things i made for tea tonight and 100% ended up on the floor!
where's my beer!!!

Lizzzombie · 12/11/2007 18:50

Bunny - I only have coors light (ugh) trying to loose weight!!
If its any consolation we had 3 mouthfuls of beefstew and rice. Then half a banana.
I give up!

I just can't believe a girl as chunky as me is destined to not have a fatty baby!!!

bunnyhunny · 12/11/2007 19:24

I am trying to not drink in the week, but obv my baby is driving me to it sorry to hear about the coors light lizz! I have kronenberg in the fridge. 5% and everything!

2happy thanks for the advice - I really hope it is just a phase! The temptation to just give him bread products is amazing, but if he refuses what I am giving him, he can go hungry for a while...

nemo - we are 100% blw now too. he really won't take a spoon anymore.

Wilkie · 12/11/2007 19:53

Lizz - bleeding gums, twin neice number 1 ALWAYS bleeds when she teeths and quite a lot. Generally enough to dribble down her chin Doesn't cause any prob though, it stops as quick as it starts

Bunny - have you tried giving him something different for brekkie? J got bored of weetabix so I do shreddies left to mush down and alternate. Also try sticking a fruit pot in with it to change the flavour?? I totally agree with not stressing if they don't eat much though. They are all just phases.

Lost another 0.5lb tonight which is miraculous as have been a bit naughty this week.

Nothing to report here, all very dull.

Nemo - have you tried NEXT? They do some lovely shoes but am unsure of sizes. Bet she looks SO cute wandering around being so tiny

Dragonhart · 12/11/2007 19:56

Ruth had her hospital appt about her ankles today and the surgeon said that she had inherited laxness. He asked me to bend my thumb back and said that it went quite far back and Ruth has the same in her ankles. It will gradually get less, but might look worse when she starts to walk. Im very relieved as I was worried we might be back and forth to the doctors with her. He told me not to even think about it as it will definatly resolve itself.

She has a cold though. Last night she lost her voice and it was very cute (but sad for her).Wilkie- I have been given Acuvue (sp?) lenses for astigmatism. The optician gave me two pairs to try but I have not really worn contacts since and now, when I just went to where I thiught they were to tell you the name of them, I cant find them Dont know how good they are but might be worth a try? (just ignore me if that is what toric lenses are!)

Canmummy- Do you mind if I ask why you have to have those drops for your eye test?

I have read that when a child is mobile, they begin to reject new foods which was to protect them from unsafe or poisonous food. DOnt know if it is bollocks though as I probably read it in Motherandbaby or some baby mag.

Dragonhart · 12/11/2007 20:02

Nemo- Startrite do one design in size two here

eandh · 12/11/2007 20:07

thats great dh so glad its all ok

well done wilkie put on a 1lb this week

bunny/lizz etc we compromise hattie has a spoon to throw bits around whilst I shovel loads in her mouth whilst she panics where the food is!! Mum gave her a home made pizza finger for lunch apparently she nom nom it!!

Had a great night with them bith asleep by 7 and slept through without a peep till 6 so I am very today although dh alseep on sofa

I applied for some money from charity dept at work for preschooland they emailed today to say they'll give them £250 at christmas can't wait to go and tell staff tomorrow !!!

canmummy · 12/11/2007 20:51

Evening everyone,

DH - I have the drops because I'm diabetic and so need yearly retinal screening.

Lo is still teething, has had huge temps all day and got conjuctivitis as well. Hope she's ok for nursery tomorrow!

Am absolutely shattered - dh didn't get in till 12.30 last night. we've got huge family problems with one of my in-laws that we've got dragged into so end up discussing it as well into the small hours. I'll be off to bed soon.....

I managed to lose about 4lb over the last few weeks but I'm a bit stressed out so probably putting it all back on. We went to pizza hut tonight and asked if there was anything milk-free lo could have - she could have potato wedges!! She turned her nose up at them anyway so ended up having a jar of baby food but it made me feel relieved that eating out isn't going to be too difficult.

Also went to a health food shop today and they said they could make lo a birthday cake milk-free! (I know, I know it's not till January but I'm trying to be organised!)

bunnyhunny · 12/11/2007 21:39

DH - like the mobility theory. It wouldn't explain why he eats crap off the floor thought S has a bad cold too - I don#t know if its the same one from a few weeks ago, or if it's a new one, but he has a nasty cough now. bless him. lol that losing her voice is sweet - though I know EXACTLY what you mean!!
And good news about the ankles.

Wilkie - another 1/2 lb!! how much have you lost in total? I am thinking of doing WW too, just to lose that stubborn last 1/2 stone (or so..)

EAH - amazing what difference a full nights sleep makes!

cm - you are organised, but I also need to think about a milk free cake, so you have motivated me!! And only wedges that were dairy free in pizza hut?!? I don't think S would have any of that ! I'd have to pack some egg sarnies...
Congrats on the 4lb too. I am feeling decidedly PLUMP now!

Wilkie · 12/11/2007 21:48

Bunny - have lost about 10lb in total. I am doing the WW Core plan rather than points - it is so much easier!!

EAH - loved the fotos of the girls in their 'hoodies'. Bless em
