UD - I have drops to dilate my eyes every year and I have to say they sting so much!!! It also then is really difficult to see outside in the sunlight (even in the middle of winter) so would beg to differ that it doesn't hurt!

Never thought to take my older kids to optician but did take dd2 to the dr when she was about 2 because I thought she had a squint. Anyway, she didn't so just felt really silly!

2Happy · 11/11/2007 21:03

God yes, Wilks, hitting, biting, headbutting. And it only gets worse as they get bigger and stronger

Wilkie · 11/11/2007 21:03

Canmummy - get thee some Medised....PRONTO!

Dragonhart · 11/11/2007 21:04

UD- Yes lots of eye problems in both our families. Also DH has very bad eyesight, and has had glasses since he could tell people he couldnt see properly! Lots of squint problems in DH's family and his aunt had to have an op for it when she was little. The lady doing it was very good, but Before and afterwards he was quite worried about it. Not so bad last time as I think he was a bit older and knew what was going to happen. He has to have the tests every 6months.

If they dont have to have the drops, I would do it EAH. The rest is just like games and would prob be quite good fun for them.

Wilkie- I clean Ruth's two teeth! She loves it but mostly just chews the brush. I think she likes it because she likes doing things LUke does. When they are older Luke will spend his time saying 'ohhhh mum! Does she have to play with me!'

theUrbanDryad · 11/11/2007 21:04

2Happy - so long as ds2 doesn't stick his fingers in anyone's eyes you should be fine. but you may get silently JUDGED by the other mums!!

2Happy · 11/11/2007 21:04

sympathy, ud, ds1 was a real biter. He had 2 phases of it - one when he was teething, and I think it was just to make his gums better, and one when he was older and just thought it was hilarious . Good news on the sleep though!

canmummy · 11/11/2007 21:05

Wilkie - is the medised for me or lo?

Now forgot who was asking about soft play and conjuctivitis - think I'd take them as advice has changed in last few years and no longer need to keep them off nursery etc. You might get a few mucky looks off other mums though

2Happy · 11/11/2007 21:06

PMSL ud - will I get home to an AIBU - to think bringing you gunky-eyed baby to soft play makes you a bad mother thread on MN

theUrbanDryad · 11/11/2007 21:06

canmummy - yes the drops do sting when they're put in, it depends on how sensitive your eyes are! and i agree about the light thing, i found i couldn't focus for ages after as well. but a normal eyetest without drops shouldn't hurt, so long as you are with a qualified and competent optometrist!

Wilkie · 11/11/2007 21:09

I had iodine in my eyes the other day cos I want contacts so they were checking my cornea. Everything went orange. Very odd!

2Happy · 11/11/2007 21:10

Anyone watching Long Way Down?

Wilkie · 11/11/2007 21:10

Nope - watching Mr and Mrs Smith. Drooling over Brad and jealous of Angie!

What's Long Way Down?

theUrbanDryad · 11/11/2007 21:11

Wilkie - iodine? are you sure? it should have been something called fluorocine...

2Happy · 11/11/2007 21:12

Ewan McGregor and Charley Boardman on motorbikes.

2Happy · 11/11/2007 21:13

Isn't Angelina supposed to be pg again?

Wilkie · 11/11/2007 21:14

Dunno - she said Iodine.

2Hapy - is she??

2Happy · 11/11/2007 21:15

(dh bought me heat magazine when I was poorly )

theUrbanDryad · 11/11/2007 21:17

iodine would've really, really hurt! i didn't know you wore specs, or are your contacts for fashion only?

Wilkie · 11/11/2007 21:19

Contacts for fashion - that would mean I had money to burn!!! No, I wear specs and my astigmatism is now -1.50 so things are very blurry. Tried some toric lenses last week but didn't like them!

2Happy · 11/11/2007 21:21

Marvellous. They are asleep. I'm going to bed. Night all x

theUrbanDryad · 11/11/2007 21:22

toric lenses aren't the most comfortable (i've been told) - i'm quite lucky, i've got stupid high prescription (-10.00!!) but it's straightforward, so i can wear lenses if i want!

Nemo2007 · 11/11/2007 22:45

hi all
sorry not been around but have a quick question..does anyone know where I can get some proper walking shoes in a size 2? Chloe has been walking for about 2/3weeks now and went to clarks who said she should have first walking shoes on but they dont start them until a size 3 and she is so diddy she is only measuring a 2 or 2.5 at a push.

Hope all those jan babies are behaving..can anyone believe we are coming up to their first christmas!!!!!!

canmummy · 11/11/2007 23:22

Nemo, have you tried start-rite? They are more expensive than clarks but I think they're worth it. The sizes are also marginally different so she might be bigger than that there.

katwith3kittens · 12/11/2007 09:59

Whoaaa.... too many messages for me to catch up properly.

but Jeremy Clarkson ... really ??

Is it Clarks that do the photos of the first shoes ? I dont usually go in there as its so busy. I tend to use R&B which sell Clarkes as well (or ours does at least) Shoes are a killer, just wait till they start school and they need shoes, trainers, gym pumps, hockey boots, football boots, rugby boots. I'm lucky as my nephew tends to pass down his rugby and footie boots so it manages to keep costs down a bit. DD asked for Uggs for Christmas

Mrs C : We love thunder montain. We ended up getting 12 fast pass tickets last time we were there for use in a half hour slot (machine was broken so attendant was handing out and we queued up twice to get extra so we went on three times in quick succession.... and I was about 20 weeks pregnant too !!

LAL : if yu get any more deals like that during school holiday times let me know !

UD : I WANT THAT BOOK !
Although if we all slept in till 9 am it would be chaos. We are usually up and out of the house by 8.50am. Sometimes, like today DS2 doesnt have time for breakfast so we wait till we get back home about an hour later.
W is being a pain at the moment in terms of going to bed. I'm finding I can only put him in his cot if I have fed him and he is totally zonked out, otherwise he wakes up as he senses he is being lowered and then wakes up and shreeks. I must admit, that for the last two nights I left him to cry not something I usually like doing, but that didnt work either, so I had to sit in his room singing which after 10 minutes seemed to do the trick.

Biting... I dont think shouting really helps, as I wouldnt want to make him feel frightened in what is usually a happy and secure time, although if he catches you by surprise you cant help yourself. I usually stop feeding straight away, say NO firmly, and try again a bit later. The Kellymom site has some good advice, which usually works when you say it in an american accent.

Food, hmmm, this varies so much. Porridge always goes down well, mid morning snack of potato cake or toasted t cake, lunch, 3 cubes followed by fruit, snack in after noon, dinner 3-4 cubes or pasta plus sometimes a pudding depending on how keen he is. I never give yoghurt at dinner time in case he is sick later on as I cant abide the smell, somehow it always seems worse in the evening. Dont know why ?

Right, I'm supposed to be weaning myself of MN as we've bought a house that needs a lot of renovation and I need to be looking into that instead of this. How can I cope ?

Lizzzombie · 12/11/2007 12:47

Hi everyone.
My house looks like a bomb site. I wish DJ would just start eating properly instead of chucking it all everywhere. Its doing my head in!
He is supposed to have the following sort of diet:
7oz milk on wake up (6.30 ish)
weetabix & rice crispies mush with 4oz milk for breakfast (7.30ish)
7oz milk after morning nap (10ish)
1 x boots organic jar & a cube of veggies or piece of toast & scrambled egg....something easy. Cube of baked beans, pot of sweet potato and cheese/ham mush. Something like that. (only one of these options!) followed by a muller little star yoghurt.
Sometimes more milk (7oz) at wake up after afternoon nap.
A rusk or somekind of baby biscuit.
Tea is at 5ish and he gets 3 cubes (meat & 2 veg) or a pot of frozen meat something with a couple of cubes of veg and some rice/baby pasta or something.
Plus a bottle just before bedtime (about 5oz) and as much water from a beaker as he wants.

I know if I cut down on the milk mid morning and mid afternoon he eats more. But its just so much easier to give him a bottle than sit through the palava of trying to get him to eat.
He is still on Aptimil 1st milk. HV said it was fine to keep him on this till he was 12 months and then switch to full fat cows milk.

Got a cute little santa outfit from Matlan yesterday! He looks so sweet in it.
And was repotting xmas tree in the back yard yesterday and took a fab photo of him in the pot! Will post later when I can find some batteries for camera, as its died - again. Digital cameras seem to eat batteries.

Right, am off to clean up the carnage of lunch. Fun!
