Couldn't help it!

muppetrickortreat · 31/10/2007 13:44

bethoo - he is crawling but in a very kamikazi-let's-all-slam-our-heads-into-the-floor type way!

mossy - good name... it's fireworks names as of tomorrow okay!!! Put your thinking caps on ladies!

bethoo · 31/10/2007 13:50

muppet - same here, i also find that if he bangs his head i do nothing (as in scoop him up and cause a scene) and he does not shed a tear!

does anyone know if those bed guards (to stop little ones falling off bed) fit any type of bed? mine is like a futon with a wooden ledge all the way round.

muppetrickortreat · 31/10/2007 14:44

Bethoo - our bedguard fits all beds - they tend to just have plastic flaps on hinges at the bottom which slide between mattress and bedframe.

Your firework name should be bethooooohhhhandaaahhhh

PickledOnionMossysterMunch · 31/10/2007 15:38

I now have that cot/bed combi thing going on so hopefully won't need a bedguard.

Tonight for the first night we're going to try not feeding Bertie to sleep. I'm going to feed him, make sure he's well fed of course, and then we're going to try to cuddle him to sleep in his cot.

We've already primed the neighbours.

Bethoo / Muppet Bertie still feeds loads in the night, I don't have a clock in the bedroom otherwise it would depress me. Not that I mind that much as I'm half asleep myself.

Stops me having a period I suppose, for now at least. I imagine when he shows a bit more interest in solids he'll take less milk and then I'll have to dig out the mooncup.

Diva - SG - whatever - I love the new name! deathbysnoosnoo - bit of a mouthful but I do like it. Can I just call you snoosnoo?

Sponge and Callie nice to see you again... Now where has Dolly gone? I will have to FB her

Ooh something exciting happened to me today, I forgot to say! I had a chat with a chap from radio four about my FB/bfing article in the F word. It's going on a new programme they're doing called iPM. There's a link on my FB page anyway.

guyfoxsetsparlaimentalight · 01/11/2007 08:22

Mossy you are such a star - will seek out your feature through FB

Monti wakes me hourly still - I have resorted to having a bottle of formula by the bed, but he just scoffs that and carries on BFing - makes no difference whatsover!!

My other two never did this - what is it with him?

Any handy hints anyone?

I can't do controlled crying atm as our lodger has just started a new job this week so I don't want to disrupt his life too

bethoo · 01/11/2007 10:05

what a shit day yesterday! why do i let it get to me! sob sob.
has anyone else been for their little ones 8 months check up with the health visitor yet? i went yesterday and basically according to the bloody record book, he is underweight, too short and his head is too small and because he was not ''babbling'' at the time she put in the book ;babbling not present' as if he NEVER babbles! so now i am concerned as he has to go back and be weighed and measured in a month. talk about making you feel as though your baby is not normal or developing properly! almost in tears. she says i have to up his portions and not bf him so much so he will eat more solid food! so do genetics not come into it anymore? both me and his dad are petite but i guess that even though my midwife said before the baby was born that babies develope diffferently it is not seen that way with the hv! anyone else had this before from the hv? really considering never going back as everytime i leave the hv i am depressed. thought Hayden was coming along great as just the other day he started clapping and now i am in shambles thinking that he may have some mental developement disorder or is it just because i am a first time mum panicking?? my child minder pointed out this morning that her 14 month old just recently started saying mama, that is right according to the hv Hayden should be saying mama and dada! are any of yours speaking yet?? please help as mass reassurance needed!

Piffle · 01/11/2007 10:10

no bethoo she is talking through her anus.... clapping is fab developmentally Finn has on idea he babbles loads but only just can do a b and only if its a raspberry and followed by litres of baby slobber.
He cannot clap he cannot wave, he can however eye gouge and nipple pinch... ready for uni then

Ignnore her I'd talk mroe but Finn is grumbling...
chin up luv

bethoo · 01/11/2007 10:26

Piffle - i know what you mean about nipple pinching, it is bad enough feeling littel needles when bf but to have his bloody fingers in his mouth aswell squeezing my saggy skin flaps is bloody torture!

muppetrickortreat · 01/11/2007 10:26

bethoo - I second what piffle has said ... if he is clapping ffs that shows fab co-ordination... Samuel is miles off doing that! As for his size/weight - when you say he is too short... too short for what?

I know lots of grown-ups who are too short! I also know lots of grown-ups who are too underweight but totally healthy and I know several people with very petite heads! As long as he's putting on weight overall I personally wouldn't be concerned if he seems bright and alert (which he does!).

My mil always cites my dh as an example to others... he was hugely vastly overweight as a baby (think Jabba the Hut), his head was ENORMOUSLY large and he barely said anything until he was 2 (when he delivered a perfect sentence!)... she said she spent a year of her life hiding from HVs!

muppetrickortreat · 01/11/2007 10:28
bethoo · 01/11/2007 10:43

muppet - he is only 65.5cm in length which is under the lowest percentile. instead of just saying he is normal just smaller than average there is alot of concerned faces being pulled and 'review' dates being arranged! talk about sending you into a blind panic!

covenhope · 01/11/2007 11:05

Oh bethoo sorry you have a hv like that (we had several when the others were little). As for upping his food and bf less- don't have the link handy but on kellymom there is a chart showing the calorific value of BM compared to babyfood. The quickest way of putting on weight is to increase the BM as it has far more calories than babyslop.

I think most of us are still at the 7 months stage? So we haven't had the hell that is developmental checking yet.

As for the saying mama and dada... mine does but it doesn't mean anything. At this age it's a sound. Her favourite when really upset is mum-mum-mum. Your CM's 14 mo actually knows what those words mean but you wouldn't expect an 8 mo to use them properly. Sounds like another HV that doesn't know what they are talking about.

Evenhope · 01/11/2007 11:11

Back to normal posting name...

Well we've had 2 nights of (almost) sleeping through

Last night she fed from about 11pm -12, then not a peep out of her until almost 6.30am. Quick slurp and back to sleep until 9.30am!!! Up, breakfast, bit of a play and fed to sleep about 45 mins ago. Just woken up now (I can see the leg waving from the pram)

I'm sure it isn't coincidence but 2 days ago I changed the polycotton undersheet on our bed for a flannelette one, and started putting her in a vest again under her stretchsuit. I wonder if she wasn't warm enough to stay asleep?

Foxy- worth a try?

bethoo · 01/11/2007 11:12

Covenhope- your little one is speaking already! i felt an idiot saying that he blows raspberries and got the sympathetic nod! hayden says random things but like you said just sounds not really words IYKWIM!? Hayden is a quiet little dude most of the time unless hungry or lonely! she was expecting him to burst into conversation just becasue i took him to the centre as if it makes any difference to him. he tends to be quiet with strangers until he feels confident enough!

Piffle · 01/11/2007 12:35

bethoo one mor thing doll, it's an 8-10mth check - Finn is not due his til Dec and he is over 7mths now.
another top trip to the hv to report
Finn has gone from 75th to 25th centile
I'm assuming the fact that he has dropped a feed at night as he is sleeping 7-10.30-7am and does not feed big first thing at7am as he is too nosey and prefers toast...
Also he is so bloody active, in his walker he is like bloody Lweis Hamilton with worse steering and more speed if he sits he tries to move he is NEVER still.
He eats fine
Just for comparison how way off does this sound for daily grub cycle...
7am small bf and 1/4 slice toast and whatever cereal he can nick of his sister, usually 2-3 shreddies.
big bf at 9.15 2 hrs sleep,

big bf at 11.15am

lunch 12.30 full fat yoghurt adults pot size rachels organic little ones I think? some banana, some bits of cheese.

1.15pm small top up bf and sleep til 2.45 small quick bf b4 school run

good bf at 3pm plus a bite of our biscuits (kids after school milk and cookie)maybe a quick bf at 4.30 if he is grumpy

dinner at 5.30pm bits of chicken/veg batons dipped in cheese sauce, bread and butter is still hungry - he self feeds
no pudding as he is too tired by now

Wind down and 6.15 small bf then getting ready for bed, big sleepy feed at 7pm big sleepy feed at 10.30pm.

Surely that's loads?

bethoo · 01/11/2007 12:56

Piffle - sounds alot to me. As i am at work in the morning Hayden gets bf throughout the night by demand and when i get back from work and before bedtime. am ging to try and give him more snacks throughout the day.
been on the net and small head means microcephaly so will call hv and se if she suspects it.

bethoo · 01/11/2007 12:58

Piffle - Hayden is in the lowest percentiles between 0.4 and 2nd on the charts and his head measurement is not even on thte chart as it is below the lowest. should i be concerned?

guyfoxsetsparlaimentalight · 01/11/2007 13:05

Bethoo your post reminds me of why I never go to HVs - they talk complete pants 95% of the time

Some of DS1's friends didn't talk properly until they were 3 years old FGS!!!

It really makes me cross when HV's use formula weight charts for BF babies - her comment to you that you should reduce BFing to increase his weight shows she knows and understands very little about breast milk - which is his main source of nutrients atm and higher calorie than baby mush

I would just take it with a pinch of salt - I know its hard though.

I have no intention of taking Monti for an 8 month check. I know and can see he is developing. I would only go to a HV if I had a particular concern and wanted to use them for a referral to a specialist (e.g. when I wanted DD's hearing tested)

BTW Monti says gagagagagagaga that is all

bethoo · 01/11/2007 13:07

thanks foxy - i guess i have just made myself a mess now!

i have put some recent pics of Hayden up from when my parents visited last month. does his head look small? i am desperate!!

guyfoxsetsparlaimentalight · 01/11/2007 13:08

Bethoo x posts.

Had an idea - why don't you start a thread regarding Hayden's head measurement? I am sure you will get loads of info from other Mum's on the subject!

Piffle · 01/11/2007 13:11

he looks bloody perfect bethoo!
So he is small. I have a dd who has existed happily on the 0.4th centile for 5 years, her head is also that small as is her height
It's all about proportion, if height weight and head circ are all roughly the same centile, then you've simply got yourself a little lad for now, he is developing well within normal lines from what you've said
It would be (if you want soothing) better to ask hv for a paed referral to get proper qualified advice.

bethoo · 01/11/2007 13:16

yes i am thinking of calling the health centre and asking for a referral.

i have started a thread in developement/behaviour so just waiting now! the hv do this to me every time i bloody visit! usually about the weight! but the fact that his head is small and he is not conversing with me makes me think the worst!

Piffle · 01/11/2007 13:19

bethoo, my dd was also totally non verbal til age 3, she never babbled much at all and very odd sounds like ttthhh ya ya ya and never ma ma dad da - now she has above average language skills
I can identify with your worry have been exactly there

Ok what sounds does he make
does he laugh/giggle/squeal/

Piffle · 01/11/2007 13:20

and bethoo with dd's head, they always said outside the 0.4 or 99.6 should be referred...

crikey this is testing my memory

bethoo · 01/11/2007 13:43

Piffle - he yells, giggles and blows raspberries and says words but that is just fluke really like he said doc yesterday! and he kind of witters away.
