is he perhaps over tired? Has he been awake for some time before this? perhaps try feeding him and settling him in a rocking thing [chair or crib] a bit before he starts grumbling to see if he drops off a bit easier. evenings are notorious though aren't they?
a bit later you could try taking his mind off things by giving him a bath [some love them, others don't, well you know that lol] and then he may take more of a feed and sleep longer? Or not, but the evenings may be more settled.
or not, i dunno.

kelmcd · 23/10/2007 15:07

Is it ok to give them a bath evry day? I wasn't sure as thought the london water might dry his skin out to much? Think it might be the answer tho, was thinking if i can get him down about 8-9pm then give his next one as a dream feed to see if that works to keep him settled

kelmcd · 23/10/2007 15:08

He is over tired alot in th evening but he just fights it and refuses to go to sleeep, cheeky monkey

Twitsthatgobumpinthenight · 23/10/2007 15:21

try putting baby oil in the bath, it needn't be a proper bath just a dip, something he can learn to identify with bedtime later on. Try keeping the lights dim and the tv low, its all stimulation. Whisper[?]
seriously though try not to worry, if you get stressed over it all, he'll pick up on it and not relax.

Twitsthatgobumpinthenight · 23/10/2007 15:22

does he have jerky arms when he's overtired? if so it can be unsettling for them so try strapping them down [in a manner of speaking]

dal21 · 23/10/2007 15:29

hammer - hats off to your post. routine is avctually going much better - am using the bits that work and ignoring the bits that dont. it was the accidental parenting that sent me over the edge

twit - will head over and check out your post on my thread. thanks for posting oh wise one.

kink - great news on the osteopath appt.

kelm - i am not washing ryan evry day yet but every other day and topping/ tailing the day inbetween.

well ryan had his 6 week check today and in 3 weeks has gained just over 2 lbs! hoorah! the baby clinic was awful though, packed waiting room, roasting hot and nowhere separate to breastfeed. in a baby clinic of all places! fortunately i got there early and dint wait for long, but there were lots of mums waiting to be seen. oh well.

have good afternoons all.

Twitsthatgobumpinthenight · 23/10/2007 15:33

im not wise just a know it all smeghead. I fear that's how i may come across anyway but i hope not.
am off now to be 'wise' [lol] elsewhere, see you soon.

LoopyLouLisa · 23/10/2007 15:49

thanks twits for the link and for the advice.

dal, haven't read all your thread yet but definitely thinking of implementing a strict routine - just as soon as i get this feeding/sick thing sorted. ds was such an easy baby in comparison and he found his own sleep through/feed every 5-6 hour routine really quickly. i think dd is gonna require a lot more persuasion....

just a quick question, does anyone else's lo become distressed in the lead up to and during a number 2?

love to you all xx

dal21 · 23/10/2007 16:08

Loopy - yup to LO becoming...well not distressed, but youd think he was pulling a ten ton truck with the amount of straining he does. he goes bright red with the effort.

the BW does cover routine with babies suffering from colic/ reflux etc. but i would only advise reading it if you are in the right frame of mind and able to take it in context. It had me in pieces by the end of the day yesterday - poor DS was so unsettled by the swaddling and attempts to get him to fall asleep by himself. The volume of info also stressed me out. I personally think that you are doing a sterling job!

Twit - I checked out your post and think you are spot on!

elkiedee · 23/10/2007 16:30

kelmcd, there is a mumsnet group on facebook and that includes a thread where people can identify themselves with their mumsnet names.

Twitsthatgobumpinthenight · 23/10/2007 17:58

yes to the straining, quite scary to witness but normal lol.

amyclaramum · 23/10/2007 20:07

Hello all - have been reading posts but have just not got time to post ! Its half term and we have all got stinking colds (apart from DH who has man - flu of course !!)

love to you all especially sophus - thinking of you - it will be a really difficult day for you - hope you get through it ok - sounds like you have some good friends giving you support and help and of course Linus too !

PLP - glad to hear Cerys has a date for her op - it must be so scary for you - love and hugs !

HIWBB - lovely to hear from you and hope your times of feeling "yourself"again increase and the panicky feelings get less and less ! Take care xx

sophus · 24/10/2007 08:55

earplugs rock! linus has a period of crazy REM sleep after 3am and it drives me bonkers, and is impossible to sleep through - until last night. earplugs helped me sleep through all but his craziest episodes.
Off to london today, family meeting tonight to go through will (I'm the executor) then staying in hotel before funeral tomorrow.
Wish me luck!
xx

MrsFish · 24/10/2007 09:01

Hammerhead - The party is on the 2nd November so have another 10 days to try and lose a bit more weight, although the big bow on one side hides my jelly belly quite well and with my fat pants on underneath I should look ok belly wise, just generally bigger all over instead

Kinki - glad the osteopath thinks he can help.

kemcd I use facebook, its quite handy for keeping people up to date with photos

Loopyloulia - Well the past week seems to have been abit better with Ben and settling down between feeds, he doesn't seem to be quite as bad apart from when trying to poo, he makes an awful song and dance about that

The colief drops I have been using in conjunction with the Dr Browns bottles have run out this morning, so I am back with the infacol today, it will be interesting to see if there is a marked difference. Oh and I have only been using the Dr Brown bottles for the two late feeds as I only have two atm and they are definitely better than normal bottles.

Ben is feeding pretty much 4 hourly, sometimes less occasionally a bit more. I'm still only averaging about 5 or 6 hours a night though (and thats if I go to bed at about 8-9pm) because it takes so long for him to go to sleep after a feed, especially after 3/4am one when he is just wide awake. Sam has suddenly decided to start waking up in the middle of the night too or waking up really early which doesn't help

Does anyone know when your boobs stop leaking if you aren't using them to feed? Ben is three weeks old on friday and I am still leaking.

amyclaramum Myself and Sam have colds too, its 'that' time of year it seems

MrsFish · 24/10/2007 09:02

Good luck Sophus, will be thinking of you, hope all goes ok

Hello all,

Firstly, just wanted to say that Cerys has put on a wopping 8ozs in the past week!!!! So pleased that all the hard work has paid off - she's been particularly hard work over the weekend but she seems OK today thank goodness! Thank you all for your message of support, you'll never know how much it means!

(this might be a bit out of date as I started it last night!)

sophus - thinking of you loads this week lovie, glad you've got somebody around for you when you go to the hairdressers etc. You are truly amazing getting on with things so well!

MrsFish - glad the bottles are good, I might have to invest in them! Love the dress, you'll be the belle of the ball.

kinki - so pleased the party went well and that you got to let your hair down, I bet your dad was very proud of you and grateful!?

hammer - I soooo laughed at your breast pad going astray, thank you for cheering me up!

dal - again, good to hear feedback on the bottles. How did today go with the routine?

laksa - so glad the thrush is clearing up. I noticed a sort of white thing in Cerys's mouth and pointed it out to the gp at our 6 weeks check today but he thinks its ok.

kyala - hope DH either finds another job quickly or his boss sorts things out, what a nightmare!

twit - glad you're getting some sleep. Cerys has been sleeping through for a few weeks now which is great. However, she was so unsettled yesterday that she slept all day so I'm expecting to be up tonight...

LLL - big hugs to you, thinking of you lots.

kelmcd - love the pics, there's a little smiley boy that looks very similar on the facebook group . Hope you manage to make it through the day without any more eruptions lol

fettle - did you get to the clinic yet? How did it go?

Hello to everybody else! Gotta dash as I'm going round to my bf's house to grow roots on her settee and for Cerys to play with her DD who is 2 months older than her - the start of a lifelong friendship!

Love and hugs xxxxxxxxxxx

Morning All

Well we have made it back from my parents without to much disruption and have done all the family in one long weekend.

Mrs Fish I love the dress you are going to look stunning.

Well done for the party Kinki it is so much more than I would have coped with at the moment.

Very of those of you whose bubs are sleeping through although I can't really complain as Poppy does 23:00, 03:00 and 06:30 and DP always does the 03:00!.

Poppy is suffering so badly with gas it upsets we so much to watch her in this pain. It wakes her in her sleep and she will scream until she has passed it and then settle again for about ten minutes until the next lot and there is so much of it. You can really see the pain in her face it is really upsetting. I have tried infacol which was useless and now the colief doesn't seem to be working. I am thinking of getting the Dr Brown bottles to try, Mrs FIsh how have they worked for you?. If I buy these will I have to buy the Dr Brown steriliser as well. We have the Avent microwave one?

laksa · 24/10/2007 12:37

Hi everyone,

Am feeling a bit better about the feeding thing today. yesterday I went to get Bella weighed and was dreading it but she's put on 7 1/2oz in the past week So the health visitor said I don't have to top her up but due to the fact that she has dropped from 50th percentile to 25th(because of the small weight gain last week) , they would like to see her put on that amount each week...nothing like heaping pressure on a new mum , unfortunately I don't know what I did differently this week from last, she has been drinking roughly the same amount!

Bella still fusses at the breast and only takes 10mins max at a time but I am feeling a bit more relaxed about it all and at least her thrush has cleared up. Wish she would sleep for longer at night though, I now have permanent bags under my eyes and look like a state most days...haven't managed to get time to blow dry my hair once since bella was born, I know very vain!

Hammerhead, sounds like bliss...am going to go look at mattresses next week so hopefully we can make a decision then. Hope millie was more settled last night and gave you some rest!

twits, very at you, long may it continue!

kinki, hope the osteopath manages to yield some good results for Liam. Glad your party went well. I didn't know you could get free baby massage on the nhs...where can I get some!

Sophus, I have earplugs but they don't seem to block out bellas grunts or dh snores, what kind do you use? Good luck for the funeral, will be thinking of you x.

purplelost, so glad that cerys is putting on weight, makes you feel so relieved doesn't it?

Nicki, poor poppy, its definitely worth giving dr brown bottles a try since so many people have praised them. Have you tried the 'tiger in the tree' winding hold, where you lie the baby across your arm with chin in your palm?

Must dash as bella is whingeing xx.

kelmcd · 24/10/2007 12:44

Well, i had all good plans of trying to add in a dream feed last night. We gave Arben a bath, a good feed and managed to get him to sleep by 8.30pm, a first, so was hoping to do t about 10.30pm. The best laid plans......he woke up half an hour later and was wide awake gave him more boob, played for a little while, more boob and then 90mls of FF, finally fell asleep at 10.30pm. This usually doesn't end up being him for the evening so waited, waited and waited some more for him to wake up, next we heard from him was at 3am this is a first for us and gave us some much needed sleep he then woke at 6am and then again at 9.45am, so all in all we have had a greta start to the day!

Twitsthatgobumpinthenight · 24/10/2007 13:18

that's great news k.
best wishes and my thoughts are with you sophus

LoopyLouLisa · 24/10/2007 17:52

Mrs fish, mine are still leaking and katie is 8 weeks on friday! only when one of the dc are crying or they're accidently being leaned on

LoopyLouLisa · 24/10/2007 17:58

sorry had to finish catching up on the thread. well, the gaviscon seems to be working a bit but she's still really unsettled and i spent from 3am til 6am rocking her in her bouncer chair as it was the only way to settle her. been out today and bought an automatic swing/chair thingy so finger crossed for a better night. needless to say i didn't make it to the once-weekly baby clinic to get her weighed as they close at 10.30am and i didn't get up til 9 after being up all night. i'm now expecting a rollocking from gp who insists she must be weighed each week as they reckon she's too tiny at 9lb (nearly 8wks).

now she's screaming for food.......

kyala · 24/10/2007 19:51

Well, needless to say, I ended up being too busy to really catch up the other night, and have only, yet again, managed to flick my eyes over the posts!

Anywho:
Hammerheadshark: In ref to making cup of tea whilst bf-ing, I'm very careful LOL and only ever when DD is on my left breast (as I'm right handed), as follows; everything is within reach of the kettle so it's really just a case of getting everything together with one hand whilst kettle is boiling (once I've filled the kettle up by opening it and pouring water from nearby water filter jug, which is always filled in the morning), taking the milk from the fridge is probably the trickiest bit as I have to crouch (usually ending in DD having boob suffocate her LOL but only for a little second!) as for taking the top off the milk well that's the decider, if I can't do it with my hand I give up and go back to the sofa!

As for the potty training, I had every intention of making a move on it yesterday, got DD1 into cloth nappy and asked her to tell me when she was doing wee's etc (which has worked to a certain extent in the past and we usually get the tail end of a wee in the potty) anyway, spent the morning asking her if she was wee-ing yet the answer always being "no", then at some point just before lunch I must've stopped asking and forgotten about the whole thing (down to DD2 wanting boob, no doubt) anyway, managed to forget altogether that DD1 had a cloth nappy on and when changing her for a bath in the evening realised! Poor thing, but that cloth nappy held a heck of a lot of wee, and didn't leak to any really bad extent!
I asked DD1 why she didn't tell me that she was so wet and she shrugged her shoulders (something she's unfortunately picked up from me )

DD2's night times are a bit random at the moment, not sure just how lucky I am but at the very least she'll sleep if I'm too lazy to get up and feed her! (This only happens at stupid O'clock in the morning, and I make sure she's fed full before I go to bed, which is usually about 11) This morning she managed to wake at 5am (after waking at 2am and me putting the dummy in her mouth to see just how hungry she really was)! I was well happy with that! But the majority of times she'll wake every 4 hours, which I don't think is too bad for 4 weeks old.

Anywho, that's about the extent of excitement in my life! I still haven't left the house on my own but haven't really found any point in going out yet, especially seeing as money's so tight and the only place to really take the girl's is town, which is pretty boring for us all with no money to spend LOL
Mind you the HV is being a big help, she's offered us another food voucher (local charity gives out food and clothes to poor folk like us!) so we're going to accept, also, apparently, there's a caravan site where there's a place that's available through the HV/NHS too so, as soon as DH can swing a holiday, we're going to ask for access to that too! Oh we so need a holiday right now!
Doesn't look like DH is going to be getting out of retail but I suppose as long as he gets out of the place where he's working right now, anything's get to be better right?!

Right, that's my rant over, not a lot else to rave about really, hope you're all doing well and getting your lives back to some form of normality! (What's that?! )
I'm off for tonight, can't promise I'll be back anytime soon but will definitely make more of an effort now DD2's getting into a bit of a routine (ooh which reminds me I've even managed to start expressing now too! Yay!)
Night night, take care
x

fettleandbabyfettle · 24/10/2007 20:37

Hi all

Been reading every day, but then something conspires to stop me posting - either little 5 week old boys, 3 yr old toddlers, grumping DH's or bad internet connections!!

Don't have long now, but just wanted to let you know that we spent yesterday at the hospital to have Toby checked out - his bilirubin levels have fallen, but not by much, hence why he is still so yellow. They said not to worry as the levels are going down and to continue with the breast feeding as the benefits are so good for him. As for his sleepiness and gentle movements when awake he is "just a slower baby compared to others"!. Although we think we may have had a smile this evening - closely followed by tears, but we'll pretend it was a smile!!!

Hope everyone else is doing ok.

Sophus - thinking of you - how was your trip to the hair-dressers? Peaceful, I hope.

PLP - thought of you lots yesterday while I was in the children's ward. Hope you and Cerys are doing ok, great news on the weight gain!!- take care.

Very impressed with the tea-making/BF combo, Kyala!! No way could I do that!!!

Right, really must go - big hugs and waves to everyone else.
