Hi All,

Thought I’d just start a December 2019 babies thread for those who have given birth in December and want to catchup/chat/rant/need support etc.

We are 11 days in...!
How is everyone doing?

@Fivebyfive2 I mean that would make complete sense, it feels like that have just given up producing milk by about 6 😂

primarywoodle · 07/02/2020 14:39

Wow 70 minutes! Hats off to you id be bottle feeding by now!!

Yep fussy evenings (making it hard to get stuff done or any me time!) And still waking 2-3 hours at least between most feeds sadly. Its normal, dont be fooled that switching to formula at night is a magic wand either...

AliceTheCamelHasFiveHumps · 07/02/2020 15:24

"Sil has made me feel he should be going longer by now, but he's only 8 weeks and was 4 weeks early?! "

Your baby is only really 4 weeks old... Ignore SIL

AliceTheCamelHasFiveHumps · 07/02/2020 15:31

She was referred today for tongue tie.

But for now she gets 20 mins roughly on each boob, and formula top up.... Which she takes around 3-4oz of. So not getting much out of me....

Dec19baby · 07/02/2020 15:38

I think a midwife should know better than to say a set amount of time for BF. It's about quality, not quality a lot of the time. And every baby is different at sucking etc. Some are more efficient than others. If he comes off himself after 10 minutes, is content and healthy then nothing to worry about. Just coz a baby is on for 40 minutes doesn't mean they're extracting milk for that entire time

popgoesperfection · 07/02/2020 17:59

We had ours today, got the calpol stocked up for just Incase don't listen to sil @Fivebyfive2 all babies are different, ds1 woke every 3 hour, day and night until almost 6 months, ds2 is 9 week and sleepy feeds at 10 then wakes between 6 and 7 for his next feed. I haven't done anything different 💁🏻‍♀️ @primarywoodle your right, both was/are ff babies, and I have a friend who's baby is exclusively bf and sleeps 8+ hours per night.

forevercurious · 07/02/2020 21:35

DS is 9 weeks, EBF and wakes up every 2- 4 hours for feeds. I met a lady earlier this week who claims her baby has slept 8pm-7am every night since she was born! I’m finding it best not to compare to other people as every baby is so different and there will always be a baby that sleeps better and worse than yours!

primarywoodle · 08/02/2020 08:27

@alicethecamelhasfivehumps i think if you wanted to build your supply id put baby on the boob every 2 hours minimum through the day and/or pump in between then hopefully when the tongue tie is sorted shell be able to crack on just from the boob once the new latch is sorted?

primarywoodle · 08/02/2020 08:29

I need help with a routine - i know its still a bit early but DD never did day naps (it was hell) so what are you guys looking at in terms of naps as we move towards 2-3 months?

Dec19baby · 08/02/2020 09:16

I'm struggling to get mine to sleep during the day. He used to in first few weeks but since week 5 he doesn't, unless we're out and that means I can't rest or get anything done 😓

forevercurious · 08/02/2020 09:58

@primarywoodle me too! I don’t understand how to get into a routine as what we do each day is different, out at different times etc so sleep is always a different time. One day this week, he was up for 2 hours, then slept for 2 hours, up for 3 hours but had a little cat nap in the car then when home slept for another 2 hours! but then the next day as we were out and about and he was sleeping in the pram / car there was no set pattern!

I don’t want to be stuck in the house every day in order to facilitate a routine but I do want one. It just seems so hard and complicated to achieve. But maybe I’m over thinking it.

bespokepaininthearse · 08/02/2020 10:30

I have downloaded the medela tracking app, and am using it to track feeds, pumping, bottles, nappy changes and when he sleeps. It's shown on average when he sleeps and stuff, even if your out there will likely be a general pattern, even if it's he sleeps for a set amount of time in the afternoons. I have found it really helpful, I'm not interested in routine but I have to keep an eye on how often he feeds and how many nappies as there's a worry he's not getting enough.

forevercurious · 08/02/2020 10:37

@bespokepaininthearse Thankyou! I’ve just downloaded the app :)

Fivebyfive2 · 10/02/2020 16:30

We had Joe weighed today, he is 10 pounds and 3 ounces at 8 and a half weeks😀 Soooo pleased!!

His feeding has settled down a bit, doesn't seem as fussy. I'm hoping we've pushed through, so I'm keeping everything crossed we can continue with The Plan...

The Plan is to continue mostly breastfeeding (except for 8pm to 1am where he has bottles to give me a rest) until his 1st few jabs are done at 16 weeks. Then we'll start gradually swapping him to formula so that at 6 months he'll be formula fed and we can start giving him bits of food etc as well. That should (in theory) coinside with him going into his own room and having a much better routine. Am I being naive trying to plan like that, do you think?? Probably!!

Teamthree · 10/02/2020 19:16

I'm starting to panic about daytime naps. As the 12 week mark approaches I'm reading all about the change in sleep. Apparently it's much more important that babies get the right amount of day sleep, and learn to settle themselves to overcome the dreaded 4 month sleep regression. So far my LO only sleeps in the day in the sling or in her pram out and about. She needs her dream swaddle at night to sleep, and haven't really tried to use it in the day as I read that it's good to keep the swaddle for night so she knows it's bedtime. Has anyone else cracked good daytime naps?

popgoesperfection · 10/02/2020 21:05

Wow @Fivebyfive2 sounds like he's doing brill with his weight gain !! Nope, we haven't cracked naps yet, we rock/cuddle to sleep and he sleeps on me Confused .... for every nap!!

Dec19baby · 10/02/2020 21:35

I'm exactly the same!! My wee one will not sleep during the day now unless we're out in the car or pram for a walk. He used to, but not now 🤷 I'm really struggling to get rest or get stuff done. He will not fall asleep on his own, he's good at night as he will, with a dummy. I really don't want to resort to having him only sleep in our arms for naps..

GrannyClanger · 10/02/2020 21:52

Hi! Can I join? Been following along for a while. My DS is 7 weeks old. He’s been really poorly in hospital with a virus, and this seems to have thrown his sleep patterns out of the window! Before he would sleep 2-3 hours at night, but at the moment he’s just feeding all the time. I barely got any sleep last night as I was bf him every 30-40 mins. Hoping he will settle again soon. Also having trouble setting him down for naps - all he does is cry if he’s not on one of us Confused

popgoesperfection · 10/02/2020 22:08

Hi @GrannyClanger. Hope your lo is better now. Gosh I bet you are shattered!! Nothing prepares you for the sleep deprivation does it! I've just resorted to naps on me for the minute, I stressed myself out with naps with ds1 so trying to just go with the flow this time.

Teamthree · 11/02/2020 10:30

As much as I wish we were all finding it easier it's nice to know I'm not alone with that! @popgoesperfection that's what I want to avoid too, after reading some articles I felt thoroughly stressed out that napping was never going to work for us. And I know that's not helpful at all! Maybe I should just embrace the sling for now and hope for the best come 3 months+!

Hope everyone's coping in the snowy weather if you have it where you are! Me and my mum got stranded in town yesterday cause the roads were gridlocked from the bad weather. Luckily I had enough milk with me!

Teamthree · 11/02/2020 10:59

@Dec19baby have you tried a sling? I use a stretchy one and it's been a lifesaver to get stuff done in the day. I know how you feel though, I wish she'd sleep on her own at least sometimes, just so I know she can do it! Yet she's pretty good at nighttime? Strange that she can't do the same in the day.

Dec19baby · 11/02/2020 11:10

I have a Bjorn carrier and a Caboo sling and he doesn't really like either. I also can't get the Caboo on right so his head is supported. He's always held his own head to, nearly from birth, so it's a nightmare even when on, one have 1 hand. But he won't sleep in it. Yeh he's fine at night, he definitely knows the difference between night and day, so he sleeps at night. 🤷

popgoesperfection · 11/02/2020 11:12

@Teamthree I think all mums struggle at one point or another it's just not something every mum wants to admit !! I definitely did first time round but didn't tell anyone as I was embarrassed (and I work with babies in a nursery so thought people would think how can she not be coping when she works with children) !!! I have been more open this time, tried to be more laid back and have accepted little bits of help!! Has helped me to just go with the flow more.

forevercurious · 11/02/2020 17:32

Another one still unsure and struggling with day time naps. It just seems so inconsistent, I swing between he will sleep when he needs to for how long he wants to worrying it’s not enough and he will never be in a routine. I need to remind myself it’s early days still. Since 8:30 this morning he’s probably slept for around 3 hours in 3/4 short naps! - is this enough? I have no idea!

From today I’m tracking all of his sleep for the next couple of weeks until we hit the 12 week mark and will go from there.

jpaws · 12/02/2020 12:34

Hi all. Last couple of days my LO has been a bit cranky, much more than usual, has slept a lot more but he is usually that awake and alert I have to make myself remember he is only 7 week old. I think he must be going through another growth spurt as he has been weighed today by HV and he is now 12lb11oz! He was 7lb7oz when born so has put loads on (so it seems). He has also grown by another 8cm :D
I keep toying with getting a carrier of some sort but not sure whether I would use one enough to warrent it.
