Oh sweetheart, i wish there was something that i could do.. I agree with Jaffacake lady, you need to try and eat just a little bit as you need to keep/build your strength up.

LG&T, yay on the rice front! Lol at Hugs waling out with the shoes - i think you could build up a nice collection of items and flog them on ebay

Lups, we didnt completely fail in our shopping, you got W a postcard (did she like it?) and i got 4 tops and some bits for Jack, and not forgetting the all important diet coke from burger king!

Am off to WaterBabies with Ella this morning and then popping to Reading with a friend. I think KK's might be calling me, as i was gutted that we couldnt locate the so called shop that LG&T PROMISED us was there! Anyone want some?

Mrsjaffabiffa · 20/09/2007 10:21

SOH, take a deep breath and try to think straight.

She is crying because she is probably hungry but can't feed properly, uncomfortable because she is in pain and mostly because I expect she is knackard. Obviously she can't sleep easily because of the above. Make sure she is fully dosed on her calpol, this should be given by her weight not her age otherwise it will not be sufficient. Have you tried Medised? It eases breathing and aids restless sleep as well as being a paracetamol, personally I find it much better than calpol and calprofen. Try to give her a little food to comfort her and then do your best to get her to sleep. She needs to sleep to mend!

Sweetie I know it's so tough and you feel helpless I'm sure, but you can help her by trying to settle her the best you can. It is going to get easier she will turn the corner soon.

Harrison had a virus when he was about 6 mths old, he was very porly and ended up in hospital with it but all the problem was in the end was that I had been giving him the gp recommended dose of calpol for his age (what it says on the bottle) and it did nothing for him so he got worse and worse over a few days, he was lathargic, pale, listless and had oral thrush. When we arrived at the hospital the first thing they did was weigh him (he was huge for his age)and work out the correct does and gave him it. The difference half an hour later was amazing. We kept that up for the next 3 days and his body began to be able to fight the virus. Obviously I'm not saying this is the problem with M but just showing you how quickly it can turn around, take her back to the hospital if you are really worried, did they not give you open access to the pead unit?

Oh sweet KK's....drool....

SOH a virus has no time limit for it's misery. She is tiny (in comparison to us ) and her airways are teeny tiny, the slightest blockage\irritation hits babies ten fold. Then they get tired and dont sleep properly all contributing to making them cry\whimper pretty much constantly. It does sound awful and is breaking your heart im sure but she will get better. Can i phone you? How is your voice today? God damn it you need to MOVE here. We are all too far away.

ArtistFormerlyKnownAsSOH · 20/09/2007 11:30

Thank you for being so nice to me. I feel such a failure today. It's day 12 of this and I'm exhausted. I've only been giving her 2.5ml of Calpol at a time, no idea how to work out what she needs by weight. She's about 8.3kg I think, so is 2.5ml not enough to be effective? I did wonder about Medised but it's drowsy making and I don't know if she'd then be too tired to feed at all. She's at least awake and trying to feed, but whimpering/moaning whilst doing it.

We do have access to the paed ward but I phoned them and they said being as she's still breathing fine and has no real temperature she's probably no worse and as it's viral we just have to ride it out. I just didn't know a virus could last this long. The paed who has been dealing with her said it could be 2 weeks. I have discovered Ashton and Parsons powders though and they calm her down for a window of about an hour, enough to feed her and get her to drop off for a 20 minute nap.

I am still completely without a voice LG&T but with an effort I can bark like a seal.

I can see no end to this.

Mrsjaffabiffa · 20/09/2007 11:45

SOH, I'm going to work it out for you. See in France the measureing spoons for calpol are all in weight, so hang on and I can tell you what ml the equivelent of kg is. IYKWIM

OP posts:
Mrsjaffabiffa · 20/09/2007 12:00

SOH, I've just measured it with calpol in the kg syringe and then on to a ml medicine spoon.

8.3 kg is the equivilent to 1 whole 5ml medicine spoon. This is the exact problem I had with Harrison. Jorja is only just over 6kg so M is bigger for her age, medecine should always go on weight and body mass it's crazy that they calculate it on age.

Anyway, I personally would up the dose for both; you can give calpol and the calprofen alternately every 2 hrs but no more than 8 doses in 24hrs. btw, Medised does not make them sleepy as such it just helps to clear the airways making it easier for them to sleep. She needs to sleep to get better. She will feed when she's hungry.

Good Luck SOH, I am sure you'll find she responds better with a little more, I've just worked out too that 2.5ml of calpol is for a baby just under 6kg in the syringe.

largeginandtonic · 20/09/2007 12:12

Give her some medised it works like a charm and if she has a better sleep she will get better faster too, like MrsJB said. I dont think you have anything to worry about on the weight\hydration front either. Beau gains about 3 oz a week at the most amd M is stacking on 12 even with a virus

Have some medised yourself too, it is a miracle. Both of you go to bed, snuggle and keep warm. You will both get through it, please dont worry. I know it doesnt feel like it will ever end but it does and you will be wise on yet another baby bug and hurdle.

Will talk to you whenever you like, even if you just want to squeak a recognition

aprilmeadow · 20/09/2007 13:42

So looks like there will be some KK's winging there way to the G&T household

I am off shopping in an hour. Will get some Medised and post it off to you SOH.

Anyone else need anything?

Mrsjaffabiffa · 20/09/2007 13:51

dh would love a Porshe AM

scootermum · 20/09/2007 14:13

SOH At her age you can give her up to 5ml..the whole big spoon..I know its scary at first giving the baby medicine of any kind but I have just given M teh full wack and she is much smaller than Mathilda, if thats any consolation..also the HV once told me that the baby would need to drink about 2 bottles of Calpol before any damage was done through over dosing so dont fret, just give..or as the others said, go with the wonderful Medised..sleep is what you both need more than anything..It will ease her off nicely and is a decongestant to boot..

My friends' DS had croup not long ago, (do you remember he passed it onto L when M was about 2 weeks old?)although he had it very badly like your M, he was hospitalized and on steroids...he took about 2 weeks to start feeling better..it is hellish..but hang on in there..and if you need me I will come...you only need ask...you have my number yes yes?

Huff huff..why cant we have another London meet up?Come to think of it where on earth is everyone from London, Tam?Befnal?everyone else? I will come to see you MKG..We might both be old and grey by the time I have saved the fayre but still...

I have been sick only twice today..M has been sick once and L not at all so 1 out of three isnt bad..DH jokingly said 'I hope its a stomach bug and you arent pregnant again' Ha ha..how we laughed..till I realised Im a day late [quelle horreour emoticon] [total panic emoticon]

Surely it can just be put down to the tummy bug?

aprilmeadow · 20/09/2007 14:15

SuperMonkey · 20/09/2007 15:22

Ditto MKG - although, don't tell him but the arrangement is growing on me - double bed to myself, no snoring, I'm getting the best night's sleep I've ever had!

SuperMonkey · 20/09/2007 15:32

Do you think I ought to do my profile page? I've emptied the freezer, sorted the airing cupboard, Seth is still asleep (after 2 hours, unheard of), so I'm looking for something to do.

ArtistFormerlyKnownAsSOH · 20/09/2007 15:37

cameroonmama · 20/09/2007 19:34

Scoot pregnant?

SOH, you are sounding a bit more like your usual self, hopefully you are through the worse by now, it doesn't matter too much if M doesn't feed as much as normal, she has reserves to draw on J always has a good 5ml of Calpol/nurofen when needed and it always helps to knock him out.

Send Beau diddly over LG&T, to sort out mr chubby chops here. You would think given the size of him he would be desperate for something other than mummy's boobies but no, baby rice? Pah forget it, not having it, no no no. I'll try some carrot tomorrow instead, maybe he has more sophisticated tastes . How did Hugs do at playschool? Bet he loved it did you cry?

Super photos Super
